Everton: Kenny defends Townsend signing

Paddy Kenny has expressed confidence that new Everton signing Andros Townsend will ‘do really well’ at Goodison Park.

The former Leeds and Sheffield United goalkeeper was speaking to Football Insider.

The lowdown

Everton confirmed the signing of Townsend last week following his release from Crystal Palace. The 30-year-old, who has also played for Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United, signed a two-year deal at Goodison Park.

Speaking exclusively to Football Transfer Tavern, former Premier League striker Dean Windass described the transfer as a ‘great bit of business’ but did say it came as a ‘big surprise’ given that Townsend hadn’t ‘pulled up anything for a few seasons’ at Selhurst Park.

The winger made 34 Premier League appearances for the Eagles last season, scoring once and providing five assists (via WhoScored).

The latest

Kenny feels that Townsend will improve Everton’s depth in wide areas and insists that he still has a lot to offer both on and off the field.

The former Ireland goalkeeper told Football Insider: “He’ll make the squad better, 100 per cent.

“He’s experienced and he’s still a quality player. He might be 30 but he is still a fit lad. He’ll be good to have in the dressing room.

“I’m sure he’ll enhance the squad and the whole club and do really well at Everton.”

The verdict

Townsend is hardly an inspiring signing for Everton. You wouldn’t expect him to be a starter necessarily, but even as a backup option there are question marks when you look at his rather barren level of productivity last season. Would you really want to be relying on him in the event of an injury?

However, the focus very much seems to be on stylistic compatibility. Townsend produced 1.6 accurate crosses per game last season – more than any Everton player. The idea will be that, when called upon, he furnishes the aerially prolific Dominic Calvert-Lewin with plenty of inviting deliveries from out wide.

Barry Douglas could swap Leeds for Brescia

Leeds United defender Barry Douglas could be set to join former Whites owner Massimo Cellino at Brescia, according to a fresh transfer report.

The Lowdown: Douglas set to leave Leeds

The 31-year-old spent last season on loan at Championship side Blackburn Rovers, making 30 appearances in the division and registering two assists.

Despite Leeds potentially being light on left-backs amid the projected exit of Ezgjan Alioski, Douglas will leave Elland Road when his contract expires at the end of this month.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359346″]

According to BresciaOggi and Pianeta Serie B [via Sport Witness], the Scot could join Brescia this summer, with negotiations being done in ‘great secrecy’.

It would see Douglas link up with former Leeds villain Cellino, who proved to be a rather unpopular owner during his time at Elland Road.

The Verdict: Interesting next step

It makes perfect sense for Douglas to move on this summer, with Leeds going up a gear as a club and the 31-year-old seemingly no longer at the club’s level.

He should be remembered as a solid servant during the Whites’ stint in the second tier, though, playing 27 times in the Championship back in 2018/19 and also featuring intermittently as they won promotion the following year.

While Serie A feels like it could be too strong for him now, a move to Serie B makes more sense and represents an intriguing choice for the £13,000-per-week defender. What Leeds fans will make of him possibly teaming up with Cellino is another debate.

The West Indies' New Action Hero

Five years ago, when the West Indies snatched victory from the jaws of defeat against India at Kensington Oval, Mervyn Dillon didn’t bowl a single ball on the final day."Brian Lara was the captain and he obviously had a plan," Dillon said.India had been given only 120 to win the match and Lara relied exclusively on Courtney Walsh, Ian Bishop and Franklyn Rose to conjure up some magic that sent India rolling over for 81."He [Lara] said to me the night before, I did my part in the match already when I scored 21 valuable runs," Dillon explained."Things went [according] to plan and I didn’t have to bowl. I didn’t mind. We went on to win the match and the series."At the time, Dillon 22 years old, raw, inexperienced and playing only his second Test match. In the past 12 months, however, he has emerged as the West Indies’ pace spearhead and it was perhaps most fitting that he was the one who played the most significant role by a bowler in the West Indies’ victory over India in the third Test of the current Cable & Wireless series.Dillon took the first and last wickets of the match in which he bowled splendidly and caught brilliantly, his eight wickets and two catches earning him the Man-Of-The-Match award. In was, in his words, "definitely the best" of his 24 Tests. It was a match in which he enjoyed the rare distinction of capturing a wicket with the first ball of the game.It was also a match in which he removed top India batsman Sachin Tendulkar.Sort of player"Everybody knows the sort of player he is. He is the No. 1 batsman in the world right now. To get his wicket was definitely a high moment in the match."Dillon claimed four wickets in both innings, but is still to add to his solitary five-wicket haul which was achieved in 1997 against Pakistan in his third Test."It’s not worrying. Once I keep bowling the way I’ve been doing, it’s going to come," he said.Dillon has also moved to within ten scalps of 100 Test wickets and he has the chance to complete the landmark in the remaining two matches against India."I am not in a hurry to get to a hundred. I am in a hurry to go 2-1 up in the series," he said. While almost everyone acknowledges Dillon as the leading West Indies pacer at the moment, he does not see himself in that role."I don’t see myself as the No. 1 fast bowler," he said. "I see myself as just one of four bowlers out there in the middle. My goal is simply to help West Indies start winning matches more often."Dillon has often been criticised for his inconsistency and he had been dropped four times by the time he had played seven Tests. But the fact that he has been able to command a settled place in the team in the last 12 months has helped a lot."I’ve been playing for a while, and that’s what you want – to be in the team and not having to worry too much about whether you are going to be in this match and out the next match," he said."It’s really comforting. It has helped in my improvement towards Test cricket."One of the things that also assisted him is the guidance provided by two West Indies fast bowlers from the glorious days of the 70s and 80s.Andy Roberts, he said, had been very helpful during recent West Indies pre-series camps, while Michael Holding, a now television commentator, has been giving him advice almost on a daily basis.Dillon might never be another Roberts or Holding, but for now he’s the No. 1 West Indies fast bowler, whether he wants to acknowledge or not.

England want to make big impression in first two ODIs

England are targetting the first two One-Day Internationals of the National Bank Series with New Zealand as vital

Lynn McConnell11-Feb-2002England are targetting the first two One-Day Internationals of the National Bank Series with New Zealand as vital. The series opens on Wednesday at Jade Stadium in Christchurch, formerly Lancaster Park, and the second game is at the WestpacTrust Stadium in Wellington on Saturday.
Hussain- first two games important

Captain Nasser Hussain said he was aware that New Zealand had not finished well in Australia and while mindful of how New Zealand played earlier in the summer, he is expecting an even series between two sides of similar lineups, all the way down the order.”Both sides will be sparring up against each other and I think the first two games will be very important,” he said.At the same time he acknowledged that England were well down on experience in ODIs as borne out by the fact that New Zealand had players like Chris Harris who has played 198 matches, Stephen Fleming who has 165, Chris Cairns 146 and Nathan Astle 145.Hussain said he was pleased with the way England were gelling as a team. They were showing character but there was a lot more the side had to learn about one-day cricket. It would be a slow progression but some parts of their game still needed a lot of improvement. Consistency of selection and fighting and showing character was how a team was brought together, he said.Asked where he wanted to see improvements he said: “Our fielding, our intensity, our fighting in tight situations, our batting in the first 15, our bowling at the death, areas like that.”There would be times, possibly even in the New Zealand series, where the wheels would come off but the thing was not to over-react.”You learn more from losses and wheels coming off than wins,” he said.”We don’t play enough one-day cricket, it is only now we are getting experience,” he said.
Bond- out through injury
Photo Reuters
Hussain said he was “disappointed, but not too disappointed” that his side will not have to face up to New Zealand fast bowling sensation Shane Bond this summer.Bond was forced out of the remainder of the New Zealand summer today when diagnosed with a suspected stress fracture in his left ankle. His place in the CLEAR Black Caps for tomorrow’s first One-Day International has been taken by Northern Districts rookie fast bowler Ian Butler.Hussain was informed of Bond’s injury at the start of a press conference soon after the England team arrived in Christchurch this afternoon.”Obviously we have heard a lot about him and saw him in India where we got all that series and he looks a great prospect.”Young fast bowlers bring vibrancy to the game and the New Zealand crowds want to see him on home soil,” Hussain said. The two warm-up games against Northern Districts had been good preparation for the side and Hussain said he had been delighted with the way everything had been laid on in Hamilton. The opposition had been very good.”Coming from India will take us a little bit longer. The bounce on that wicket was more like Perth than Cuttack. We’ve come from England where the wickets do have a little more bounce so we’ve got no excuses there.”We’ve got another full on nets session tomorrow, quite a few of our boys have toured out here before so we are as ready as we need to be.”The WestpacTrust Park wicket had been good and was as fast as anything he had played on.”The last time was in Australia, even in England we don’t get wickets with that pace now, they’re all sort of dying a bit of a death. They’re trying to re-lay a few of them.”But that was a good cricket wicket and you can see that the cricketers New Zealand are producing, the better wickets you play on the better cricketers you get,” he said.Hussain said the laws which allow faster bowlers more opportunities to use a shorter ball each over, required different thinking on a ground-by-ground basis. On some grounds in India it had been vital to make good use of the first 15 overs because the balls went soft, the spinners came on later on and it was difficult to score.Compared to the Australian series where scores of 60/2 were the New Zealand par in the first 15 overs.”There might be times out here when it swings around and you have to keep wickets in hand. There might be times when it is very flat and New Zealand had good bowlers like Harris and we will have to get off to a flyer,” he said.

Fenerbahce president hints at Bielsa move

Fenerbahce’s president has not ruled out the possibility of approaching Marcelo Bielsa this summer, admitting the Turkish giants are looking for a new boss in the Argentine’s mould.

The Lowdown: Bielsa transforms Leeds

Bielsa has done a phenomenal job in charge of Leeds United, guiding them back into the Premier League and playing some of the most entertaining football in the division.

The Argentine is yet to sign a new deal with the Whites though, leading to speculation surrounding his future this season, and not a fresh report has now emerged.

[freshpress-quiz id=“355458″]

The Latest: Fenerbahce eye up swoop

Despite not making official contact with Bielsa, Fenerbahce’s president, Ali Koc, has spoken to outlet Milliyet [via Sport Witness] about potentially wanting to bring him in, or someone of his ilk:

“We are being linked with a move for Bielsa. But we haven’t made any contact with him. But it’s true that we are looking for a manager of his calibre. We’ll see what happens. I hope we will be able to announce our new manager in three weeks.”

The Turkish giants have won a remarkable 19 top flight titles.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-4/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: New Leeds deal needed

It is imperative that Leeds keep hold of Bielsa for the foreseeable future, considering the manner in which he has transformed the club’s fortunes.

The 65-year-old’s standing in the game cannot be questioned – Paris Saint-German manager Mauricio Pochettino once described him as a ‘genius’ – and the Whites would find it extremely difficult to replace him.

Bielsa will hopefully sign an additional one-year deal at Leeds in the coming weeks, with nothing suggesting otherwise, but Koc’s comments are unlikely to endear him to Whites supporters, and are yet another timely reminder that plenty of teams around Europe would love to swoop in and snatch Bielsa away.

One-day tournament (Associations): Karachi-W, Lahore-W and Rawalpindi win Pool A encounters

Karachi Whites thrashed Bahawalpur by a huge margin of 173 runs, as their pace man Imran Javed bagged 7 wickets for 40, sending the tourists packing for 102 while chasing 275 for victory.Put into bat first, Karachi-W were helped by fine innings from Hasan Raza (63 off 83), Arif Mahmood (56 off 48) and Saeed Bin Nasir (43 off 80), as they posted an impressive 275 for 5 on the board. It was then all Imran Javed with his deadly yorkers and lovely out-swingers, accounting for 7 of the Bahawalpur batsmen for 40 runs in his ten overs. Hammad Tariq (75 off 91), the opener, fought single-handedly all through the innings, but failing to find any contribution whatsoever from the other end, he only saw his side disintegrating inside 23 overs, with the second highest individual score being only 3.In the second Pool A match, Lahore Whites surpassed Peshawar by 113 runs, after posting 268 in their fifty overs. Led by wicket keeper/batsman Humayun Farhat, Lahore had an opening partnership of 98 in about 13 overs, as Salman Butt and the skipper himself led the charge against Peshawar bowlers. The skipper made an attacking 60 off 45 balls, helped by 8 fours and a six, and Salman got a patient 53 off 95 ball. Sohail Idrees and Rizwan Aslam also batted well getting 42 (64 balls) and 41 (38 balls), respectively.Peshawar made an impressive start, getting 25 in the first two overs, but dramatically lost momentum, losing wickets at regular intervals. The 16-year-old lad Azhar Ali proved their main destroyer, bagging five wickets for 23 with his leg breaks. He was aided by Saad Janjua who got 2 for 25, whereas Rizwan Ahmed got 2 for 31, thus, restricting the opposition to 155 in 37.4 overs. The third encounter of this Pool, played between Islamabad and Rawalpindi, was arguably the most interesting match so far in the tournament, with the latter emerging winners by only one wicket.Chasing a target of 239, Rawalpindi were cruising along at 150 for 4 by the 30th over, after Mohammad Nadeem and Naeem Akhtar had batted well, respectively, for their 48 and 43. However, the next ten overs witnessed a remarkable turnaround, as Islamabad claimed 5 wickets with the addition of just about 35 runs, reducing the opposition to 188 for 9 by the 41st over.It was then up to an unbeaten 53-run partnership between Iftikhar Mahmood and Junaid Zia, which ultimately led their side through in 49.5 overs. Making full use of Islamabad’s slackness in the field, the two tail-enders found runs without much ado. Iftikhar remained not out on 29 (35 balls) and Junaid scored an unbeaten 27 (28 balls, 2 fours, 1 six).

Wolves: What manager can improve Traore?

Nuno Santo was happy the day before he announced he was leaving Wolves. That’s the word of club legend Steve Bull who spoke exclusively to Football FanCast this week.

However, a rift behind the scenes has put the club as we know it in doubt. Nuno has departed the Midlands under a cloud of smoke following an argument over club finances.

It’s thought that Jeff Shi came to him with a plan to strengthen the club this summer but that involved selling their best players and working on finding cheaper replacements.

The Portuguese boss didn’t like it and consequently, he handed in his notice and headed for the departure lounge.

Within days of his exit, Ruben Neves has been linked with a £35m exit while the future of Adama Traore remains in doubt.

If the Spaniard stays at Molineux, he will be a pivotal player for any new manager coming in. One head coach linked with the vacancy is Paulo Fonseca.

Another manager to hail from Portugal, Fonseca is rather unsurprisingly a client of Jorge Mendes.

Though, he’s more than qualified for the job. He took Roma to the Europa League semi-finals this season and won the domestic league with Shakhtar Donestk in Ukraine in three consecutive seasons.

Fonseca has developed an attacking style of play, one that in his own words requires himself and the team to be “brave.”

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-wolves-transfer-rumours-and-news-soumare-dias-dembele-marques-nuno-santo” title=”Read the latest Wolves transfer rumours and news!”]

The 48-year-old prefers an energetic and intense brand of football, one that sees the ball moved forward in double-quick time.

For someone like Traore, this would game-changing. The Spain international is one of the quickest players in the division and managed to record more successful dribbles than anyone else in the top-flight this term.

He is a radiant ball of fun, an unstoppable force who can create panic among even the very best defences in the Premier League.

His numbers, however, haven’t been impressive this term. Traore scored just two goals and thus, improvement is needed.

Fonseca could help the winger to finally discover some consistent end product. The work he did with the group of attackers at Shakhtar was eye-catching.

The coach had the pleasure of managing Brazilian trio Taison, Marlos and Junior Moraes in Donetsk. They all flourished under the guidance of Fonseca as he witnessed them score a combined 88 goals in three years.

Besides Raul Jimenez, this Wolves attack hasn’t registered the most vibrant of numbers in recent years.

The Mexican scored 27 last term but only managed 11 appearances this season due to a fractured skull.

Fabio Silva scored just four goals in all competitions while Pedro Neto top-scored with five strikes. As a consequence, the trio could improve considerably under Fonseca’s watch.

Neto has proven himself to be an impressive performer this season but there is still a lot of potential to be extracted from Traore.

It never really felt like Nuno was able to get the best from him; perhaps Fonseca can change his fortunes.
