Malan upstages Morgan's comeback

Dawid Malan hit splendid 96 off 88 balls to revive his own dismal form and keep Middlesex’s hopes alive in the Yorkshire Bank 40 as Eoin Morgan made a golden duck on his return to county cricket in a six-wicket win over Yorkshire at Radlett.Yorkshire’s third defeat in four games, which probably ended their hopes of achieving the knockout stage, featured a pugnacious 81 from Phil Jaques but cheap top-order wickets left the total well short of daunting on a sound pitch and slick cambered outfield. Thanks to Malan and wicketkeeper Adam Rossington, with his first one-day half-century, Middlesex passed Yorkshire’s total of 236 with more than four overs to spare. Their fourth-wicket stand of 135 at more than seven runs an over destroyed the Yorkshire back-up bowling.Defeat for Middlesex would have ended any chance of success in this year’s competition after two defeats in their two earlier games. So it was an exciting way to mark a first competitive appearance at their new training base in Hertfordshire, on Watling Street a few miles north of London.Yorkshire owed much to Jaques’s 86-ball knock and a late flurry from Adil Rashid, who made 46 not out from 36 balls, but Malan’s fierce driving put the home side in charge after a shaky start.Malan had endured a barren season in the County Championship, averaging 14.25 in eight innings, and had made little impact on the one-day format until his exhuberant strokeplay at Radlett.Middlesex started shakily in their pursuit of victory as Iain Wardlaw unsettled Paul Stirling with a slow looping full toss with the first ball of the innings and then blasted out off and middle stumps with the second ball.Joe Denly followed after a breezy 38, bowled pushing forward to Richard Pyrah, and then came what might have been the defining moment – the dismissal of Eoin Morgan first ball.Morgan, Middlesex’s most potent threat, had returned fresh from the Indian Premier League and a recent glut of exotic locations and flamboyant shots must have affected his judgement because he tried an instant reverse sweep to leg-spinner Rashid and was given out lbw.Morgan claimed afterwards that he had made contact with the bat but an orthodox stroke should have sufficed with less risk. His blunder seemed to swing the pendulum towards Yorkshire, but fortunately Malan and Rossington seized the initiative with sensible aggression, keeping the percentages firmly in their favour.Malan snicked Tim Bresnan just short of a well-deserved century with the match all but won but Rossington, a heavy scorer on this ground in Middlesex second-team games, continued in style and finished undefeated with 79 off 72 balls.

Saurabh Tiwary, Shahbaz Nadeem elected as JSCA secretary and joint secretary

Both players had retired from all cricket last year

PTI19-May-2025Former India cricketers Saurabh Tiwary and Shahbaz Nadeem have been elected as the secretary and joint secretary respectively of the Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA).Tiwary and Nadeem had retired from international cricket in 2024. Tiwary, the 35-year-old left-hand batter, played three ODIs for India after making his debut against Australia at Visakhapatnam in 2010, while left-arm spinner Nadeem, also 35, played two Tests for India following his debut against South Africa in 2019.Tiwary announced his retirement from professional cricket in February last year. He represented Jharkhard for 17 years, captaining the team 88 times across formats, and also played for four IPL franchises. Nadeem, too, retired from all cricket in March 2024, having made his first-class debut as a 15-year-old back in 2004-05.In the elections held for the new committee, Tiwary beat his opponent SB Singh comprehensively 438-194. For the joint secretary’s post, Nadeem also recorded a big win as he won 409-199 against Raj Kumar Sharma.

Outgoing captain Jayawardene confident of series win

Mahela Jayawardene has lauded the efforts of his seam bowlers in the ongoing ODI series, and is confident Sri Lanka can achieve a successive bilateral series win in Australia, having also won there in 2010

Andrew Fernando22-Jan-2013Mahela Jayawardene has lauded the efforts of his seam bowlers in the ongoing ODI series, and is confident Sri Lanka can achieve a successive bilateral series win in Australia, having also won there in 2010. Sri Lanka have earned an unassailable position in the series, leading 2-1, with the final match to be played in Hobart on Wednesday. The visitors looked likely to wrap up the series in game four in Sydney, but an hour’s drizzle rendered playing conditions unfair, by the officials’ reckoning, and that was deemed just cause for abandonment. Sri Lanka have gained the ascendancy in each of the last three ODIs through their bowlers, who have restricted Australia to 170, 74 and 222 for 9, primarily through skilful swing bowling.Jayawardene praised his fast bowlers’ exploitation of the two new balls in ODIs, as he cut a relaxed and assured figure ahead of his final match as captain of Sri Lanka. “Given the way we have played and how we’ve controlled things, the boys will be pretty happy and I’m pretty confident that we’ll be able to close this series in Hobart,” Jayawardene said. “The quality of the bowling has been pretty good. A lot of the batsmen in world cricket will struggle with the way our guys have delivered. With the two new balls, that’s always going to happen going forward. That’s something we’ve spoken about as well – how we’re going to navigate the new rules. All over the world, you’re trying to get wickets up front and it’s vital that you bat well in the top four.”Nuwan Kulasekara has been the best of Sri Lanka’s bowlers, having reaped 10 wickets at an average of 12.90 and an economy-rate of 3.30. His astonishing spell of inswing bowling consigned Australia to their third-worst ODI total ever in Brisbane, and he was again the best of Sri Lanka’s bowlers in Sydney, taking 3 wickets for 30 from his 10 overs. But although he has been the series’ most penetrative bowler, Kulasekara had gone wicketless in the Hobart Test match at the beginning of the tour. Jayawardene said Kulasekara’s return to his favoured format likely sparked a resurgence in form.”He had the control in the Test match, but not the success,” Jayawardene said. “He had a two-week layoff with injury, but he’s come back into the one-dayers very strongly with the white ball. He’s got a lot of confidence with what he’s doing with it. Both he and Lasith [Malinga] have a very good partnership for us, and I’m looking forward to how he’s going to go about it in Hobart as well.”Sri Lanka view this series as a chance to build familiarity with Australian conditions in preparation for the 2015 World Cup, and Jayawardene was pleased with the results his side had been able to put together in their last three limited-overs series in the country. Sri Lanka followed up their 2010 series win with a finals appearance in the 2012 tri-series, and have beaten Australia 8-5 at home in that time.Encouragingly for the visitors, it has largely been the younger players, who will likely feature in the 2015 World Cup, who have been the primary architects of their success. Dinesh Chandimal scored heavily in last year’s tri-series, and also notched a 73 in his only innings in the ongoing one, while Lahiru Thirimanne made a maiden hundred at No. 3, to close out the second match in Adelaide. Angelo Mathews has also played some memorable innings in Australia, in addition to impressing with the ball, and even Kushal Perera has been assured with the bat and behind the stumps in his appearances so far.”The last three or four tours that we’ve come here with the one-day squad, we’ve been pretty consistent,” Jayawardene said. “We’ve played a lot of good cricket. That’s something very positive for the team. The youngsters like Chandi, Thiri and Angelo have learnt a lot playing here. That’s a great investment for the future.”Jayaywardene was also pleased at his side’s mettle to come back from a poor Test series and a heavy defeat in the first ODI, to now be in a position where they cannot lose the series.”I think the turnaround has been fantastic. The Test series was disappointing and we never played to our potential. In the one-dayers, we had new guys coming to a settled set-up, but the Melbourne game was disappointing. But the guys have shown determination and character over the last few one-dayers. Hopefully we can finish it on a very positive note.”

Broad hails strong performance

England’s Twenty20 captain, Stuart Broad, envisaged his side playing the “perfect game” in this World Twenty20

David Hopps in Pallekele29-Sep-2012England’s Twenty20 captain, Stuart Broad, envisaged his side playing the “perfect game” in this World Twenty20 after Luke Wright calmed the jitters about their top order in a six-wicket defeat of New Zealand with seven balls to spare in their Super Eights tie in Pallakele.Things change quickly in T20. Only New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum, as the match finished, was ahead of Wright in the leading run-makers for the tournament. After all the talk of their batting frailties, England had three batsmen – Eoin Morgan and Alex Hales also – in the top five.Broad, visibly uplifted after the torment of England’s misconceived batting displays against India and West Indies, said: “Today’s result means a lot. Although it wasn’t perfect we put in a lot of strong performances. I genuinely believe that we will get that perfect game and I think we will be pretty unstoppable when that happens.”That perfect game might have to happen on Monday. England face Sri Lanka at Pallakele and will have to win to be assured of a place in the semi-finals. “It will be an electric atmosphere for us on Monday and it will be important for us to keep our composure,” Broad said. “It will be loud, it will be hectic and there will be a lot of fans shouting for Sri Lanka but that will be exciting for us.”Wright paced his innings to perfection, stroking 16 from his first 16 balls but then scoring 60 from his next 27 with five sixes, including four in the space of seven balls faced. New Zealand’s emphasis upon spin, with Rob Nicol’s part-time offbreaks also called up for three overs, was logical enough in view of a dry pitch and England’s reputation, but it failed to bring dividends. The rate got up to nine an over midway through the innings and stubbornly remained there for quite a while. England needed 54 from the last six overs before Wright’s six-hitting spree settled the game, with Tim Southee also punished as he failed to hit his yorkers. Wright took the Man-of-the-Match award, suggested that Steven Finn’s three wickets should have won it, and praised Eoin Morgan’s influence at the non-striker’s end for the pacing of his innings.Stuart Broad believes England are close to playing to their full potential•ICC/Getty”It is easy to start panicking then and sat in the dugout you look out to the middle and get a bit nervous but the guys showed a lot of calmness to get us over the line as they did,” Broad said. “If we can really keep our wickets intact you will see the power we have. The key for us is to express ourselves but also to have the skill to pack that last 10 overs full of batsmen.”Wright, who made 99 in the group stage against Afghanistan, banished the memory of his first-baller against West Indies, an attempted leave which he steered to slip, a shot that had added to the uncertainty surrounding England’s top order. Against New Zealand, he played naturally, not trying to be something he isn’t, a strong hitter who allowed himself time to get in and then reaped the benefit.”It was just nice to get past the first ball after the last innings,” he said. “After that I was able to chill out a little bit and build a partnership. In the last game I tried to leave it and I found myself out so it wasn’t as if I was going at it too hard. One thing you find is that if you do have a batter in, people can bat around you and it’s amazing how much you can catch up and score.”

Nannes moves to Sydney Thunder

The exodus from the Melbourne Renegades has continued with Dirk Nannes moving to the Sydney Thunder for this year’s Big Bash League. However, the Renegades have gained two players from the other Sydney team, the Sixers, with the batsman Ben Rohrer and the wicketkeeper-batsman Peter Nevill joining the Renegades.Nannes is the fifth big name to leave the Renegades this year, after Andrew McDonald and Shaun Tait moved to the Adelaide Strikers and Brad Hodge and Glenn Maxwell headed to the Melbourne Stars. He said he was looking forward to the challenge of playing for a new side, the 11th team he will have joined for T20 around the world, in addition to having played for Australia and the Netherlands.”I have always enjoyed the challenge of new experiences, with new places, faces, and cricketing environments to work in,” Nannes said. “Sydney Thunder is a unique ground and environment to play in. With such short boundaries, big crowds and a variable pitch, you need to adjust your game accordingly. Fortunately, it is a ground that I have always managed to play well at, and I will be giving my best for that form to continue.”Nannes will be joined at the Thunder by the young fast bowler Chris Tremain, who did not play in thee BBL last year. In other deals on the third-last day of the contracting window, Ricky Ponting re-signed with the Hobart Hurricanes, and he is expected to be available for more matches than last year given he is no longer part of Australia’s one-day international side. The Sydney Sixers also signed their first players, with Brad Haddin, Steve O’Keefe, Moises Henriques, Kurtis Patterson, Josh Lalor and Josh Hazlewood all committing to the side. The Adelaide Strikers regained Callum Ferguson, James Smith and Theo Doropoulos, while the Brisbane Heat confirmed James Hopes and Chris Hartley would be in their squad this year.

Selectors clearer with players than public – Ponting

Brad Haddin knows precisely where he stands with the Australian team and its selectors, even though a thorough explanation has not been outlined for public consumption.ESPNcricinfo has learned Haddin spoke on Tuesday to the Australian Cricketers’ Association chief executive, Paul Marsh, telling him he was satisfied that he knew where he stood and that the communication from the selectors had been adequate. The lack of a publicly mirrored statement from the national selector John Inverarity has left a few heads being scratched, though not within the dressing room.As he prepared to lead Australia as Michael Clarke’s stand-in, Ricky Ponting conveyed no discomfort at all about the way Inverarity and his panel have communicated with the players since they were appointed as part of the raft of team support staff changes brought in by the Argus review.Communication has been a buzz topic of the past few days, particularly after Steve Waugh then Shane Watson indicated that Haddin deserved a better explanation for his omission from the ODI team than that which had been publicly given. Inverarity had stated that Haddin was being rested for the first three matches of the series before the panel reassessed the position, but Ponting said a more concrete explanation had been delivered privately.”I think he actually has been given that [explanation], face-to-face,” Ponting said. “That’s my understanding of it all. He’s been told, his position has been rock solid all the way through. He hasn’t changed anything. What he had to say when he was left out of the first game is exactly what he’s saying now. I’ve got no idea why the communication has been the way it has been to the media but I know Brad’s stance hasn’t changed from day dot.”I think Brad’s been spot on the mark with everything he’s had to say. It’s been made pretty clear now that what Brad’s had to say at the start of the one-day series looks like it’s the way it is. He’s been unmoved in his stance on his situation. He’s got a week where hopefully he’s not answering those questions any more and he can get a really good Sheffield Shield game under his belt, score some runs, take some catches, and come out of this week a lot happier guy than he is at the moment. I think it’s all pretty clear as far as he’s concerned.”When he was appointed to the national selector role, Inverarity’s highest priority was establishing effective and mature communication with the players about where they stood at any given time. There have been very few of the player rumblings of discontent that accompanied the previous panel, chaired by Andrew Hilditch, but Inverarity has maintained a certain level of mystique by not explaining every decision in great detail to the public via the media. The public dimension to Inverarity’s role is still evolving, leading to the occasional moment of doubt about where players stood. David Warner’s elevation to the ODI vice-captaincy, for example, was not trumpeted, even though everyone within the dressing room knew exactly when and why he had been given the post. Ponting said his own communication with the panel had been strong and consistent, but added he could not speak for others.”Whatever communication I’ve had with selectors since this new panel’s been in place, to me directly, has been very good,” Ponting said. “Because I’ve been out of the loop in the last few months and not being the captain … I’m not exactly sure of the way the communication’s been between players on the outside or players coming in or out. I really can’t answer that question.”Inverarity’s appointment, alongside those of the other selectors Rod Marsh, Andy Bichel and the coach/selector Mickey Arthur, was hastened by the Argus review’s list of recommendations. Ponting said those changes had helped freshen a set-up that had become stale, providing something of a catalyst for the success that has followed.”I just think a whole freshening of everything has probably been the major reason that things have turned around the way they have,” Ponting said. “It’s just been a really refreshing feel I guess right through cricket in Australia, not just around the national team either but everything. All the issues that were brought up in the Argus review have been been addressed and some of the appointments that have been made, it certainly looks like we’ve got cricket in Australia heading in the right direction.”To be in and around the team in the last few months has been great fun, been very enjoyable. We’ve won some games of cricket and when you win games of cricket obviously the atmosphere around everything picks up. Culture in a team is all about winning games and when you start winning games it’s amazing what it does for the culture of the team. I think everyone that you would have spoken to throughout this year has enjoyed their cricket.”When you’ve got guys that are enjoying their cricket it’s amazing what guys can achieve. That’s been our whole focus, hard work, enjoyment, doing whatever you can to win and if you’re doing that then everything else tends to look after itself. I think everything that’s happened in the last six months has been ultra-positive for Australian cricket. Every now and then you’ve got to take stock and have a look at where you’re going, what areas need a lot of attention. There’s no doubt throughout Australian cricket there were a lot of areas that needed attention and I think most of those have been addressed.”
