AC Milan's partnership with Puma continues in 2021-22 and there is a lot more red on the this season compared to last. A thick black stripe runs down the middle of the chest on the jersey, with two thinner stripes either side of it. Framing the torso is another even thinner black stripe. The v-neck collar is red, with the Puma logo and sponsor text popping out white.

Dimitri Mascarenhas, the former Hampshire and England allrounder, has been appointed New Zealand’s bowling coach on a full-time basis. Mascarenhas had taken up the role on an interim basis for the tour of England, replacing Shane Bond, who stepped down as the team’s bowling coach after the World Cup.Mascarenhas, 37, has been retained on a two-year contract and New Zealand Cricket said the appointment had come after positive feedback from the team management on his contributions during the recent Test series in England, which New Zealand drew 1-1.”Dimitri has impressed in the short time he’s been with the BlackCaps and we’re delighted he’s accepted the offer to continue working with the side,” Lindsay Crocker, NZC’s head of cricket, said. “Both coach Mike Hesson and captain Brendon McCullum have been pleased with his contribution on the tour and have watched him develop excellent working relationships with the bowling group.”Mascarenhas’ duties will also include an involvement in NZC’s coach education initiative, and in the High Performance Centre’s winter and A-squad training programmes.Mascarenhas, who was appointed head coach of New Zealand domestic side Otago last year, said his immediate goal would be to assist the development of the national side’s current bowling attack and bench strength.”I’m very much looking forward to being part of this organisation and playing my part in helping us progress further,” Mascarenhas said. “The Black Caps are blessed with some outstanding bowlers and it was a privilege to be involved with the side during the Test win in Leeds.”My immediate aim is to assist the incumbents’ continued development and to help maintain a healthy depth in New Zealand Cricket’s elite bowling stocks.”Mascarenhas played 34 international matches for England between 2007 and 2009, but enjoyed a successful domestic career, playing for as many as nine franchises including Otago, Hampshire, Melbourne Stars, Hobart Hurricanes, Rangpur Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Kings XI Punjab, and Wellington. During the course of his 18-year career, he chalked up more than 10,000 runs and 900 wickets across all forms of the game. He also completed an ECB level-three coaching qualification and held player-coach roles with Hampshire, Rajasthan Royals and Hobart Hurricanes.

Petersen debut hundred leads Lancashire fightback

ScorecardAlviro Petersen marked his first Championship innings for Lancashire with a hundred in tough conditions•AFP

Alviro Petersen erased the memory of his previous visit to Derby with an accomplished century that revived Lancashire’s fortunes on the opening day.The 34-year-old South African bagged a king pair playing for Glamorgan at the County Ground in 2011 but he celebrated his return with 115 on his first-class Lancashire debut and shared a fifth wicket stand of 135 with captain Tom Smith who made a determined 38 from 117 balls.Petersen became Mark Footitt’s 200th first-class victim after tea but by then Lancashire were back in the game after Derbyshire had reduced them to 61 for 4 at lunch and they closed on 292 for 8.Derbyshire’s decision to bowl first came as no surprise given the overcast conditions and the visitors were soon in trouble, losing both openers in the first five overs of a chilly day. Paul Horton was undone by some late movement from Tony Palladino while Luis Reece got only half forward to Footitt and lost his middle stump.Petersen and Ashwell Prince did well to survive with both players batting out of their crease to combat the swing as only two boundaries came in the first 15 overs. Prince was starting to assert himself, taking three fours from a Tom Taylor over, but was bowled aiming to drive Shiv Thakor through midwicket and Derbyshire completed an excellent morning’s work when Steven Croft was lbw playing back to Palladino.Batting became easier after the sun broke through but Petersen and Smith still had to earn their runs against an attack which kept its discipline throughout the day. Petersen played with increasing authority but Smith’s innings was just as impressive given the circumstances and the pair looked like batting through the afternoon until Smith got a bottom-edge trying to cut Alex Hughes.By then, Petersen had reached three figures from 149 balls, surviving a difficult swirling chance on 90 to long on off Wes Durston, but his first century since his 155 for Somerset against Lancashire last June was richly deserved. It was a surprise when he mistimed a pull and was caught at square leg shortly after tea but Alex Davies and Peter Siddle reinforced Lancashire’s position with a stand of 86 in 26 overs although Derbyshire hit back by removing them both in the final two overs.Derbyshire captain Wayne Madsen said: “If I’m honest I thought we probably let them off the hook a little bit. We had chances to have them in a lot of trouble although to be fair Smith and Petersen played well but after winning the toss we were hoping to keep them under 250 or 270 but we feel we are still well in the game.”

England set for fiery Valentine's day date

A full house crowd in excess of 90,000 is expected at the MCG to see Australia and England start their World Cup campaigns

Australia takes England sledging to new heights

Big PictureA full house crowd in excess of 90,000 is expected at the MCG to see these old enemies start their World Cup campaigns. Most will be expecting a Valentine’s day massacre. With Australia having won all three of the ODIs between the sides in the preceding tri-series, there is a sense not so much of two teams battling it out as much as one team being thrown to the lions. You can see why. Australia have won 11 of their last 12 ODIs – including a 4-1 victory over highly-rated South Africa; they have a battling line-up that extends beyond the horizon – their likely No. 10 here, Mitchell Starc, has scored 99 in a Test Match; and a battery of bowlers that contains, arguably, the three quickest seamers in the tournament in Mitchell Johnson, Pat Cummins and Starc.Perhaps that expectation may weigh heavy on their shoulders, but they are rated No. 1 in the ICC ODI table for a reason. Their batsmen can tear apart any attack and they have two men in the top 10 of the bowling rankings. Playing in conditions in which they are familiar and suit them and cheered on by a home crowd, they remain strong favourites for this match and the tournament.England, meanwhile, are unburdened by expectation. Having recently changed their captain, not won an ODI series for almost a year and failed to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup since 1992, little is expected of them. Their recent record against Australia in Australia – they have lost 13 of the last 15 ODIs – provides further evidence towards the same conclusion.Their new look side promises to be undaunted by the cauldron in which they will start. And, if the ball swings for James Anderson, if they can somehow contain better in the last 40 overs of the opposition innings, if they get off to a good start with the bat, then perhaps they could cause a shock. But it would be a surprise if they ruined the Valentine’s day of 100,000 Australians.Form guide(last five matches, most recent first)

Australia:WWWWEngland:LWLWL
In the spotlightAustralia’s captain, George Bailey, openly admitted that he would almost certainly not be in the side if Michael Clarke were considered fit to play. Bailey, who has failed to pass 25 in his last seven ODIs and only once passed 32 in his last 14, is therefore in desperate need of runs to secure his place for the second match against Bangladesh in a week. This way or that, Eoin Morgan needs runs•Getty ImagesEngland’s skipper, Eoin Morgan, can empathise with Bailey. While his place is not in serious jeopardy, he knows that his side desperately need him to contribute more if they are going to challenge. He has been dismissed five times from the last 19 balls he has faced and, while he scored a fine century against this opposition just four ODIs ago, that performance was the aberration: he has passed 40 only twice in his last 23 ODI innings. Including warm-up matches, he has scored two runs in his last four games. Having sacked Alastair Cook for his poor form in the run-up to the tournament, the last thing England want is more concerns about the personal performance of the captain.Teams newsJames Faulkner and Michael Clarke will sit out through injury and spinner Xavier Doherty is unlikely to be used in this game. That leaves Josh Hazlewood/Pat Cummins as the main selection decision, and Hazlewood’s control and consistency might give him the edge. The balance is hurt by Faulkner’s injury, though, and 20 overs would need to be found between Glenn Maxwell, Shane Watson and Mitchell Marsh. The alternative is playing both Cummins and Hazlewood and leaving Marsh out.Australia (possible) 1 David Warner, 2 Aaron Finch, 3 Shane Watson, 4 Steven Smith, 5 George Bailey (capt), 6 Glenn Maxwell, 7 Mitchell Marsh, 8 Brad Haddin (wk), 9 Mitchell Johnson, 10 Mitchell Starc, 11 Josh Hazlewood.Over the last few weeks, England have settled on a preferred XI which is likely to be utilised here. Chris Woakes is likely to share the new ball with James Anderson, with Steve Finn and Stuart Broad offering support. While England retain the option of playing a second spinner in James Tredwell depending on a last look at the pitch, it is more likely that Moeen Ali will be the sole slow bowler. The only real selection dilemma is whether to stick with Ravi Bopara as the middle-order finisher and insurance seamer ahead of the extra batsman in Gary Ballance. Bopara looks likely to play this time, but is coming under increasing pressure.England (probable): 1 Ian Bell, 2 Moeen Ali, 3 James Taylor, 4, 5 Eoin Morgan (capt), 6 Ravi Bopara,  7 Jos Buttler, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 Steve Finn, 11 James Anderson.Pitch and conditionsThe MCG’s drop-in pitches can be a little unpredictable; early in the season Australia played on a quick and bouncy surface, but their warm-up game against the UAE this week was on a slower pitch. “I think it’ll be more for the quicks here,” Australia’s captain George Bailey said. The forecast for Saturday is for a humid day with a top of 31C and likely showers and thunderstorms in the morning and perhaps in the afternoon.Stats and trivia The record cricket crowd at the MCG is 91,112, set on Boxing Day in 2013 during Australia’s Ashes clean sweep England have been bowled out in 11 of their last 17 ODIs; Australia have been bowled out once in their last 17 Australia have won nine of their last 11 ODIs at Melbourne. England have lost eight of their last 11 against Australia at the venue Brad Haddin needs four runs to become the 18th player to score 3,000 ODI runs for Australia. Eoin Morgan has been dismissed by his last three deliveries in ODIs against Australia. Australia have lost their last two World Cup matches, after winning 32 of their preceding 33 (one tie). They have not lost three consecutive World Cup games since the 1970s, when they lost the final of the 1975 tournament followed by their first two games in 1979.Quote”I’d love to say it would count for something but I honestly don’t think it does. I think England have made some really positive changes to the way they chance and their structure. I personally think they look really dangerous.”
“That’s rich coming from him.”

Finch and White extend Australia's mastery

More than 400 runs made for an entertaining start to the Twenty20 series – and a tough night for the bowlers – but Australia were more comfortable winners than the 13-run margin suggested in Hobart.

The Report by Andrew McGlashan29-Jan-2014Australia 4 for 213 (White 75, Finch 52) beat England 9 for 200 (Bopara 65*, Coulter-Nile 4-30) by 13 runs

‘More futile runs for Bopara’

More than 400 runs made for an entertaining start to the Twenty20 series – and a tough night for the bowlers – but Australia were more comfortable winners than the 13-run margin suggested in Hobart.By the time Ravi Bopara went on a late six-hitting surge, England (who would dearly have loved one of those blows the other night in Adelaide) were out of contention although Australia will have been grateful that they had as many as 4 for 213 to work with.Their total, on a pristine pitch and with one boundary of barely 50 yards towards the building site, was set up by an opening stand of 106 in less than 10 overs between Aaron Finch and Cameron White. Who needs David Warner? For a while it looked like Finch would replicate his record-breaking hundred at the Ageas Bowl last year, when he slammed 156, so there will have been a degree of relief from England when he was cut-off for the small matter of 52 off 31 balls but considerable damage had already been done.White top-scored on his return to the international scene with 75 off 43 balls to strengthen claims for a place in the World Twenty20 squad. He was given a life on 11, when Joe Root was late to react to a low edge at slip off Broad and went on to produce a crisp innings, including four sixes, with his driving over extra cover a particular highlight. Again, a simple fielding error hurt England badly.England began positively through Alex Hales, who timed the ball beautifully square of the wicket and has good cause to be eyeing a top-bracket IPL deal, but when faced with a target over 200 every lean over sees the asking rate shoot up and the requirement to exploit the Powerplay comes with risks.Moises Henriques, who is on a plane to South Africa tomorrow, put Australia on course for victory by removing Luke Wright and Hales in his first over. When Eoin Morgan gave himself too much room against Glenn Maxwell it was quickly becoming a lost cause. It did not take long for Australia to get going after winning the toss. The first six of the innings went to White, when he swung Jade Dernbach over midwicket, but Finch’s soon followed and it was timing, as well as brute force, which allowed the ball to sail over long-on. After the six-over Powerplay, Australia were 0 for 52, which did not represent a disaster for England, but the major issue for them was the lack of wickets, which just gave already free-flowing batsmen even more freedom.Finch’s fifty came from 26 balls, the same number as it took him on that heady night in Southampton. Bopara’s first over cost 12 and Danny Briggs’ 14 as Broad’s plan to take pace off the ball had little effect. But it was not just bludgeoning, especially the way White played Briggs with deft deflections and strong sweeping. The hundred stand came up inside 10 overs – Australia’s sixth three-figure opening stand in T20s – and it ended as their third highest when Finch picked out deep midwicket. White had plenty of time to reach his own hundred, but fell in a curious two-ball period against Wright which firstly involved being caught off a waist-high no-ball – checked lengthily by the third umpire – before he was pinned lbw next delivery.Chris Lynn made a good impression on his Australia debut•Getty ImagesMaxwell appeared more interested in reverse rather than conventional hitting. He nailed one switch hit over deep point for six but fell trying a similar effort off Bopara in an over that cost just three to follow one from Broad that went for four.It was, perhaps, no surprise that Briggs and Dernbach were among the most expensive bowlers – neither have played any cricket of late. At the toss, Broad said he wanted to show faith in the players who had performed well last year, but the absence of Ben Stokes, especially, was a surprise. Dernbach’s first two overs had cost 25 and his last two cost the same (including another full-toss no-ball) as Australia found a late kick just as England threatened to pull them back.Chris Lynn, who was handed his debut alongside 20-year-old legspinner James Muirhead, launched his fourth ball into the stands and added two more to ensure there was no let-up as the total crossed 200. It was the type of striking that has made his name in the Big Bash League over the last couple of years and another example of the confidence surging through Australia’s young players at the moment.Muirhead, meanwhile, was given a gentler introduction than may have been expected when he was brought onto bowl with England’s top order but he had to contend with a boundary that was barely a drop-kick away. He still gave the ball a decent rip as he had done during his tour match appearances and had the joy of a first wicket when Tim Bresnan missed a slog.Bopara dented a few figures with some meaty blows – his seven sixes meaning both sides hit 11 in their innings – and kept a full house entertained with only the fifth half-century to come from No. 7 in a Twenty20 international but it came too late for England.

South Africa go 2-1 up with easy win

South Africa’s batting improved to match their bowling effort and with both departments at a similar standard, took a 2-1 lead in the five-match series

The Report by Firdose Moonda06-Nov-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details Faf du Plessis steadied South Africa with a half-century from No. 3•AFP

South Africa’s batting improved to match their bowling effort and with both departments at a similar standard, took a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. Half-centuries from Faf du Plessis and JP Duminy helped South Africa post their first total over 250 in 11 innings before another impressive effort from their attack made sure Pakistan were just about out of the match before the batting Powerplay of their innings was over. The last time Pakistan successfully chased a total of over 250 was more than two years and nine months ago, when they beat New Zealand in Napier. After the start Ahmed Shehzad and Mohammad Hafeez gave, it seemed that could change in Abu Dhabi. They posted 50 in 47 balls with 80% of the runs coming in boundaries but between them and Wahab Riaz and Sohail Tanvir’s blitz, there was little else from a line-up which is prone to collapses.South Africa had both their big names players back in the XI with Hashim Amla slotting in at the top of the order and Dale Steyn included as well. Amla made little difference, bowled for 10 by Mohammad Irfan, but Steyn struck the blow that turned the match. After Shehzad and Hafeez got on top of South Africa, with Morne Morkel and Lonwabo Tsotsobe struggling to hit the right lengths in their opening spell, Steyn made the decisive inroad. His first delivery was short and angling away. Shehzad prodded and was caught behind and Pakistan’s momentum was abruptly halted.Shehzad had played with freedom to that point, driving, pulling and cutting to leave the new ball bowlers looking out of sorts. Once he was gone, South Africa asserted their authority, removing Hafeez in the next over through a good catch by du Plessis at point.Steyn left the field after his initial three-over spell and seemed to be clutching his hamstring but returned to bowl soon after. He handed over to Tsotsobe, who bowled a controlled second spell, headlined by 21 dot balls in succession to build pressure even while Imran Tahir was leaking runs at the other end.Tsotsobe was rewarded for his miserliness. His 19th dot was edged by Umar Amin and even though he wasn’t given out on field, the review revealed a clear nick. Eight balls later, Tahir trapped Misbah lbw with the googly – the Pakistan captain was too late to review but it would not have mattered – and Pakistan had unravelled.Having swelled with confidence, Tahir bowled a range of variations and picked up two more wickets not off his best balls but because of poor shot selection – Umar Akmal who returned a full toss to the legspinner and Asad Shafiq who gifted a catch to cover. Ryan McLaren’s wily effort could easily have gone unnoticed but his mixture of change of pace and immaculate line helped him claim the wicket of Shahid Afridi to leave the Pakistan tail to end the match with dignity.Wahab and Tanvir had some fun, swinging their way to a stand of 61, the highest of the innings but by then it was too late. Pakistan needed partnerships earlier, like South Africa had to be able to chase down the total.Quinton de Kock and du Plessis put on 77 in a display of the former’s new-found maturity and the latter’s return to form. De Kock has obviously tightened around the offstump after the torrid time he had in Sri Lanka while the move to promote du Plessis to No.3 paid off.He was struggling against spin in the previous matches and giving him time against a newer ball proved the right decision. Du Plessis had time to settle in and batted with more patience and composed an innings for the first time in many months. Both he and de Kock were out to Afridi, in what could have allowed Pakistan to run through South Africa but the middle-order held firm.JP Duminy was given out lbw off Irfan, who struggled with his lines, on three but reviewed successfully – the first time that has happened in the series – and survived a run-out chance. Irfan dropped a catch in his follow through from de Villiers but didn’t get a finger on the ball as it hit the non-striker’s stumps, where Duminy was out of his ground. The nervous moments did not affect either Duminy or de Villiers as they took advantage of anything too full and rotated strike cautiously but effectively to post a stand of 70. They put South Africa in a position from which 300 seemed possible but de Villiers was the victim of a sharp catch when he pulled Ajmal to fine leg where Hafeez pouched the ball going backwards.Duminy, even after reaching fifty off 67 balls, remained watchful but McLaren managed ten runs in the last over. South Africa scored 34 in the last five to suggest their batting is making progress after being bowled out for under 200 in the two matches before this.Once they posted a competitive total, for the third time in a row this series, the chasing team came off second best.

Petersen leads Somerset home

Alviro Petersen hit a match-winning half-century as Somerset made it maximum points from their first two Friends Life t20 games with a six-wicket victory over Northamptonshire at Taunton.

07-Jul-2013Somerset 155-4 (Petersen 64*, Trego 41, Willey 2-19) beat Northamptonshire 152-7 (Willey 47, Thomas 3-33) by three runs
ScorecardMarcus Trescothick has suffered two successive first-ballers for Somerset but he could celebrate victory all the same•Getty ImagesAlviro Petersen hit a match-winning half-century as Somerset made it maximum points from their first two Friends Life t20 games with a six-wicket victory over Northamptonshire at Taunton. The hosts reached a target of 153 with seven balls to spare with Petersen finishing unbeaten on 64 off 35 balls having struck seven fours and two sixes.Peter Trego contributed 41 for the victors, while David Willey was the pick of the Northamptonshire attack with two for 19 from four overs.Willey was also the mainstay of his side’s batting after they had won the toss in glorious sunshine. He made 47, but the visitors found it difficult to gain momentum as Alfonso Thomas claimed 3 for 33.Yasir Arafat had set the tone for a tight Somerset bowling effort by making the first over of the Northants innings a maiden to Richard Levi. By the end of the six powerplay overs the visitors were 29 for one as Steve Kirby and Thomas maintained a grip.Former Somerset player Cameron White and skipper Alex Wakely both carelessly gifted catches to cover and it was left to Willey, who announced his intentions by pulling his first ball for Kirby over mid-wicket for six, to bolster the Northamptonshire total. He faced only 29 balls, hitting four fours and two sixes, but lacked support.Northamptonshire’s total looked 30 below par in such ideal batting conditions and Somerset paced their reply perfectly, despite losing skipper Marcus Trescothick for his second duck in as many games, caught at slip off a Willey lifter. It was 50 for two when Craig Kieswetter was caught at long-on to give Willey another wicket, but Trego and Petersen then added 40 in less than five overs while taking few risks.Trego was never at his most fluent and eventually fell lbw to the left-arm spin of Graeme White, having faced 42 balls and hit four boundaries and a six.Petersen scored off virtually every ball he faced and accelerated just when the situation demanded.
