Young batsmen make New Zealanders work hard

Scorecard File photo: There was belated success for Trent Boult on a flat pitch•Getty Images

Two potential future stars announced themselves in Paarl as the South African Invitational XI made the New Zealanders work hard on the second day of their warm-up match. Rassie van der Dussen and Matthew Kleinveldt scored seventies before Trent Boult ensured the day was not a complete waste with two wickets in an aggressive spell in the final session. The New Zealanders declared overnight to give their bowlers a decent run but soon found the going tough on a pitch that only got flatter under sunny skies. Van der Dussen, who has played for the North West amateur team and Kleinveldt, cousin of Rory, were untroubled by all three seamers who bowled within themselves and in short spells throughout the morning. Both batsmen were strong off the front foot with Kleinveldt showing slightly more intent. They wore down the New Zealanders, who eventually had the spinners, Jeetan Patel and Bruce Martin operating from either end. The hosts went to lunch at 81 without loss before Kleinveldt brought out his more flamboyant side in the afternoon session. His half-century came in the second over after lunch while van der Dussen continued to play conservatively, although he also reached his milestone. With both set to record hundreds the New Zealanders appeared to be on a futile mission but Martin tempted Kleinveldt with flight, drew him forward and BJ Watling completed the stumping. The tourists’ most profitable period came after tea. Colin Ackermann was caught by Martin Guptill at slip off Neil Wagner. The umpires had to confer about the legitimacy of the catch after Shaun George, who was at the bowler’s end, thought it was taken off a bump ball.Boult got his first wicket when van der Dussen played an aerial shot into the covers and Dean Brownlie took the catch. Brownlie was on the field substituting for Peter Fulton, who will take no part in the Tests after injuring tendons in his knee while batting.Having suffered a severe stomach bug, Brownlie appeared to have returned to health and may even ask for special permission for bat on the third day. He was not named in the original 12 because of his illness but has progressed well since then and because the match does not have first-class status his request may be granted. In his next over, Boult produced a beauty that swung into Pite van Biljoen and upset the stumps. The New Zealanders caused a mini-collapse when Uwe Birkenstock was given what could have been seen as a harsh lbw dismissal against Martin. The ball looked to be missing leg but Birkenstock left without complaint. All the New Zealanders’ quick men returned for a final burst in the last hour and Chris Martin was the only one to have some reward. He picked up the scalp of promising wicketkeeper-batsman Bradley Barnes to an lbw that few could have argued with. The inability to bowl out an inexperienced, composite side made up of players from the amateur and under-19 competitions may see the New Zealanders cop some criticism but they should not be vilified just yet. The attack on display is unlikely to be their Test arsenal with Doug Bracewell sitting out and the pitch at Newlands should offer a little more bounce and carry than the unresponsive Boland Park strip.Luckily, it was the only lifeless part of the ground. A healthy crowd sat under the oaks to watch the match and a sponsored event, which involved some cricket and much music, took place on the lawns at the back of the stadium. In attendance were acting CSA chief executive Jacques Faul, former national assistant coach Vincent Barnes, who now works on the High Performance Programme, current bowling coach Allan Donald and many former players from the area including Henry Williams and Johnny Kleinveldt, Matthew’s father.

Shami's ten wickets give Bengal win

A round-up of the seventh round of Ranji Trophy’s Group A matches on December 17, 2012

Scorecard
Bengal overcame early and late wobbles in their chase of 181 to seal victory over Hyderabad by four wickets at Eden Gardens. Bengal were 47 for 3 at one stage, before opener Rohan Banerjee and wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha revived the innings. Hyderabad kept chipping away, though. Anwar Ahmed had Banerjee caught behind and bowled Laxmi Shukla to reduce Bengal to 167 for 6, but Saha was around to guide them to victory. Bengal nearly doubled their points tally from seven to 13, and had to thank the fast bowler Shami Ahmed for that. After taking four wickets in the Hyderabad first innings, Shami grabbed six more in the second innings as the visitors could add only nine runs to their overnight 172 for 7 this morning. It was 22-year old Shami’s second ten-wicket haul in 15 first-class games.
ScorecardYuvraj Singh, back to the domestic grind after being left out of the Test squad, and Jiwanjot Singh, the in-form opener, hit centuries as Punjab fought back in their follow-on innings in Gwalior. Jiwanjot hit his fourth hundred of his debut season, while Yuvraj smashed 15 fours and four sixes on his way to 131 off 150 deliveries. The duo knocked off the deficit of 175, and had started to build a lead when Jiwanjot fell to Gaurav Yadav, playing his second first-class game. Yadav removed the Punjab captain Mandeep Singh and Uday Kaul cheaply next. When Anand Rajan had Yuvraj caught, Punjab were 277 for 6, a lead of 102. Amitoze Singh hit a breezy fifty and ensured Punjab had a decent lead of 179 by stumps.
Scorecard
Railways medium-pacer Anureet Singh took a five-for as Rajasthan were blown away for 135 in their first innings in reply to Railways’ 405 in Bhubaneshwar. The highest any Rajasthan batsman managed was 27, by Ashok Menaria. Ranjitkumar Mali picked up 3 for 42, including the big wickets of Menaria and Rashmi Parida. Railways, with only seven points from five games and in search of an outright win, enforced the follow-on. Rajasthan batted much better the second time, opener Sourabh Chouhan leading the way with a fifty. Robin Bist and Menaria had put on an unbroken 44 for the third wicket by stumps, but Rajasthan still needed another 117 to avoid an innings defeat.
Scorecard
Mumbai were set to take a huge first-innings lead on a slow day in Rajkot as Saurashtra lost eight wickets in pursuit of the visitors’ mammoth total. Ajit Agarkar, Dhawal Kulkarni, Javed Khan and Iqbal Abdulla took two wickets each. The home captain Jaydev Shah made 60 and there were a couple of thirties but the major contribution was from Aarpit Vasavada, who was unbeaten on 83 off 231 deliveries. But unfortunately for Saurashtra, there is little support left for him at the other end.

Bangladesh's chance for unprecedented glory

The preview of the Asia Cup final between Bangladesh and Pakistan in Mirpur

The Preview by Abhishek Purohit21-Mar-2012Match factsMarch 22, 2012
Start time 1400 (0800 GMT)Shakib Al Hasan averages 54.50 with the bat and 22.29 with the ball in ODI wins•AFPBig PictureJust how momentous is Bangladesh’s passage to the Asia Cup final? Decide for yourself after reading these figures. In nine previous tournaments, Bangladesh had played 29 matches and won two, against Hong Kong and UAE. Out of three games this time, they have won two, against World Cup 2011 finalists India and Sri Lanka, and lost a close match to Pakistan. For Bangladesh’s tireless supporters, starved of success but never lacking in passion, this is like finding an oasis in a desert. A sea of the darker shade of green will be cheering every run that Bangladesh score tomorrow and every Pakistan wicket that falls. Victory won’t be demanded, though; an appearance in the final is already a windfall for the fan.How will the Bangladesh players approach this game, probably the biggest in their careers so far? Apart from blanking New Zealand some time ago at home, this is the first time they have put together consistently solid performances for three games running against world-class opposition. Will the fourth time prove to be too much? Will the pressure of a final, something they have hardly experienced, restrict the freedom with which they bat? Will their bowling and fielding be able to hold together?Whatever be the result, Bangladesh’s surge to the final holds the promise of another close match. They will fight; if they go down, they will still be heroes. If they win, they’ll become part of folklore in the years to come. Either way, a bit of history has already been created. While tomorrow’s contest pales before the fervour an India-Pakistan final would have generated, Pakistan won’t mind running into Bangladesh. They have relied on their bowling, as they often do, for getting them to the final. The one time their batting appeared to have almost won a game for them, they ran into Virat Kohli.Pakistan have underperformed in the Asia Cup, winning it only once compared to the four titles each won by India and Sri Lanka. A second title beckons tomorrow, unless Bangladesh can ride on the passion and momentum and play beyond themselves again.Form guideBangladesh: WWLLL (most recent first)
Pakistan: LWWLL
In the spotlightHad Shakib Al Hasan been playing for some of the bigger Test sides, he would have been given a lot more respect than he gets at present. He averages 54.50 with the bat and 22.29 with the ball in ODI wins. He carries the expectations of Bangladesh fans lightly and, more often than not, puts in a telling contribution. He was Man of the Match in the hosts’ wins over India and Sri Lanka and would have got the award against Pakistan had the Bangladesh lower order not collapsed around him. The hosts have found Nasir Hossain, but for the moment, as Shakib goes, so do Bangladesh.Umar Gul helped Pakistan avoid defeat against Bangladesh with a three-wicket burst that included the wickets of Nasir and Shakib. One new ball or two, Gul has found reverse swing. When asked how he was getting such movement with a lush green outfield in Mirpur, he pointed to the dry-looking square. Bangladesh were able to survive the threat of Lasith Malinga on Tuesday. Gul will come hard at them tomorrow, especially after going for runs against India.Team newsNazmul Hossain took three wickets against Sri Lanka on his comeback in place of the injured Shafiul Islam. Bangladesh could go in with the same side that beat Sri Lanka.Bangladesh (possible): 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Nazimuddin, 3 Jahurul Islam, 4 Nasir Hossain, 5 Shakib Al Hasan, 6 Mushfiqur Rahim (capt & wk), 7 Mahmudullah, 8 Mashrafe Mortaza, 9 Abdur Razzak, 10 Nazmul Hossain, 11 Shahadat HossainPakistan played five bowlers against India, but Wahab Riaz, included in place of the specialist wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed, went for 50 in four overs. Sarfraz is expected to return for the final, freeing Umar Akmal of the additional responsibility of keeping wicket.Pakistan (possible): 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Nasir Jamshed, 3 Younis Khan, 4 Umar Akmal, 5 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 6 Hammad Azam, 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), 9 Umar Gul, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Aizaz CheemaStats and trivia Pakistan have made the Asia Cup final for only the third time. They won their previous final (in Dhaka in 2000) by 39 runs. Bangladesh, on the other hand, have made their first final of a multi-nation tournament since reaching the final of the tri-series at home in 2009 If Bangladesh go on to win the final, they will become only the second team after Australia (in the 2003 World Cup) to beat India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka in a single tournamentQuotes”I was out of the country and having a holiday when these things were happening. It gave me some rest and mental freshness. I wanted to prove myself in the game after I came back. I worked hard and it’s going alright.”

We haven't tampered with the ball – Cook

England’s one-day captain Alastair Cook has rubbished claims by Pakistan fast bowler Umar Gul that James Anderson and Stuart Broad were involved in ball tampering

England’s one-day captain Alastair Cook has rubbished claims by Pakistan fast bowler Umar Gul that James Anderson and Stuart Broad were involved in ball tampering. Cook said if Gul did have any concerns he should have gone through the proper channels.Gul hit the headlines after giving an interview in Karachi, where he suggested he had seen examples of ball tampering and mentioned seeing Anderson and Broad using various techniques. However, he later tried to step back from controversy by saying he was only talking about the England pair in relation to natural wear that develops on a ball by throwing it across the outfield.”We certainly haven’t tampered with the ball and if he did have any complaints he should have gone to the ICC over that,” Cook said at Heathrow airport ahead of England’s departure for their one-day series in India. “I think he has almost said himself that it has been a bit of a mountain out of a molehill.”In a statement to Pakpassion.net, where Gul’s original comments first appeared, he clarified his remarks. “I was explaining that the ball gets scratched when it is thrown against the rough surface or hits the advertisement boards along the boundary rope. In this manner, I said, every bowler can be accused of doing it.”Gul made his earlier comments in an interview where he talked about the art of reverse swing and how various elements of ball tampering shouldn’t be included with the laws. “Leave cricket with its traditional ways rather than making changes that would take all the charm out of it,” he said. The recent change to using a separate ball from either end during one-day internationals, which will be implemented for the first time when Bangladesh play West Indies, could impact the role of reverse swing during 50-over matches. Under the previous regulations the ball was changed after 34 overs and the period shortly before the switch was when the fast bowlers would sometimes start to get the ball to reverse. However, with neither ball having no more than 25 overs of wear it will be harder for the natural deterioration to take place.
