Wolves transfer update on Seferovic

Many Wolves fans have been left to react to a transfer update on Haris Seferovic.

As per Correio da Manha (via Sport Witness), both the Midlands club as well as Everton have made contact with Benfica over his potential signing in the summer window.

However, the Portuguese team are demanding a fee of €30m (£25.7m) for his signature, which is pretty steep for a 29-year-old.

Nonetheless, Seferovic has impressed at both club level and for his country, with no fewer than 26 goals scored and a further seven assists made in 48 games in total over all competitions for Benfica in the 2020/21 season (Transfermarkt).

There would be some doubts over whether he would play over Raul Jimenez though if he is fit, and £25.7m is a lot to spend on a potential bench player.

Whelan on NUFC takeover development

Noel Whelan has given his reaction to what he calls a ‘huge development’ in the Newcastle United takeover saga.

The Lowdown: Premier League under pressure

Speaking in a recent interview with Sky Sports, Amanda Staveley, who is part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium looking to buy the Magpies, has insisted that she would not be deterred in her bid, and also called for the UK Government to intervene.

This comes after the St. James’ Park faithful released a statement calling for transparency in their upcoming arbitration case against the top flight, wanting them to agree to make the process public.

The Latest: Whelan reacts

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan, a pundit and former Leeds United and Coventry City striker, has claimed that both Staveley and Mike Ashley are trying to put pressure on the division, and suggested that they should have nothing to hide:

“Oh absolutely, no doubt about it.

“They are forcing the Premier League’s hand, as you would say in cards.

“Ashley and Staveley know exactly what they are doing. Everyone wants the Premier League to stand up and be honest.

“Again, like cards, they have been told, ‘fold’ or ‘show your hand’.

“Ashley and whoever are all saying ‘show us what you’ve got’ to the Premier LeagueIt’s a huge development.”

The Verdict: Premier League must cooperate

The Premier League must cooperate if a decision on whether the takeover can go through can be made as soon as possible.

If they were confident of winning the forthcoming arbitration case, then they should be calling to make the process public as well, as they should have nothing to hide with regards to their handling of the deal.

Whatever result comes out of the hearing, the North East club will be relying on them for cooperation, whether that would be how the process can be sped up or whether there is a chance of restarting the bid again if all else fails.

Nonetheless, both Staveley and Ashley seem to be losing some patience now, and just want things to be moving quicker.

Villa can get dream Grealish partner in Smith Rowe

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith could land Jack Grealish’s dream partner in Arsenal starlet Emile Smith Rowe this summer.

What’s the story?

According to recent reports from The Telegraph, the England U21 international has emerged as a transfer target for Smith’s side, with the play-maker yet to sign a new deal at the Emirates.

And in the last couple of days, The Athletic have revealed that Villa actually submitted a £25m bid in an attempt to entice the Gunners into selling, but that offer has now been rejected.

Imagine him and Grealish

Speaking on the Pitch to Post Preview Podcast, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp said: “Emile Smith Rowe has come in and been a revelation. They needed someone to light the flame, give them that spark.

“He’s an academy boy and you can see he’s doing a great job, the fans love him. I hope with Odegaard coming into the club, that doesn’t stop him being instrumental in what they’re doing. But I’ve been so impressed with him, I love his work ethic, I love the way he runs with the ball, he’s been a breath of fresh air for this team, exactly when they needed it.”

And, his former manager on loan at Huddersfield in the Championship a couple of seasons ago, Danny Cowley, even made some impressive comparisons with Grealish himself.

He said: “He has got that little bit of Jack Grealish about him. He’s got the ability to square defenders up and go past them like they’re not there. He’s so hard not to get excited about, he has potential to be world-class.”

The £43m-rated star could team up brilliantly with the Villa talisman, with his knack of beating players when one vs one and also with him having the awareness to pick out a final pass – last season, the England youth international picked up seven assists in both the Premier League and Europa League.

Villa look like they mean business this summer and despite having a first bid rejected for Smith Rowe, they should not end their pursuit. If the club want to take the next step and get into Europe, they’ll need more quality players and Smith Rowe is exactly that; a quality player.

Villa could strike absolute gold if they are able to complete a deal to sign the Arsenal man this summer.

Meanwhile, Villa must avoid selling this star this summer…

Pundit says Aston Villa unlikely to sign free agent Josh King

Aston Villa will be hoping to bolster their attacking options this summer, but Dean Windass exclusively told Football FanCast that he doesn’t think they’ll turn to Josh King.

Villa considered exploring the option of signing the Norwegian striker 12 months ago prior to bringing in Ollie Watkins from Brentford.

But reports say that the 29-year-old is on Dean Smith’s radar once again as Villa look to improve on the 11th-place finish they achieved last season.

King, who ex-Villa striker Stan Collymore once labelled “unplayable”, will become a free agent at the end of this month following his release from Everton after his spell at Goodison Park didn’t go to plan.

He failed to start a single Premier League match since joining from Bournemouth, making just 11 substitute appearances and didn’t score, meaning he went the entire campaign without finding the net in the league.

And Windass believes that after his frustrations at Everton, King will want regular first-team football, something Villa cannot guarantee, with the impressive Ollie Watkins their first-choice striker.

“I don’t think they’ll come in for him. It’s not worked out at Everton, but every footballer has a level,” he told Football FanCast.

“Is the Championship his level? He needs to find somewhere where the manager trusts him. I can’t see him going to Villa, I can’t see him being understudy to Watkins, he’s not going to play, so why would he go if he’s not going to play.”

Warriors maintain clear edge after opening day

New South Wales’ bowlers have made a valiant late challenge on day one of their Pura Cup match against the Western Warriors at the WACA Ground here inPerth today

Scott Holdaway15-Dec-2000New South Wales’ bowlers have made a valiant late challenge on day one of their Pura Cup match against the Western Warriors at the WACA Ground here inPerth today. But it was still not enough to make amends for a dismal display with the bat that has left the Blues in difficulty in this match after an action-packedopening six hours of play.Warriors batsmen Ryan Campbell, Mike Hussey, Simon Katich and Murray Goodwin all fell to the visitors’ bowling attack, leaving the home side 4/111 at stumps inresponse to New South Wales’ paltry total of 131.Blues strike bowler Don Nash (2/26) removed Campbell (15) in the first over after drinks, following an attempted pull shot. Brett van Deinsen made no mistake withthe catch at short leg, leaving the Warriors 1/24 and bringing Katich to the crease.Several overs later, with the score on forty, fellow paceman Stuart Clark (1/29) caught Hussey (13) playing a defensive stroke. Hussey’s prod gathered anedge, and ‘keeper Brad Haddin gloved the catch easily. The Warriors’ plans of heading to stumps without any further losses were then disrupted again when Katich (40) was caught deep in the leg side field, becomingNash’s second victim and leaving the home side at 3/89 in the process. The Test aspirant unleashed a ferocious pull stroke but only succeeded in top edging the ballto Clark, who was stationed just inside the fine leg boundary at the time. Soon after, stand-in captain Shane Lee (1/11) enticed the former Zimbabwean international,Goodwin (15) into glancing at, and thin edging, a delivery arrowing down the leg side. The late wickets represented a form of welcome relief for the Blues, who had been on the back foot all day after a horror performance with the bat. From themoment that Jo Angel (3/39) vindicated the decision of Western Australian captain Tom Moody to invite the Blues to bat first by snaring the wicket of stubbornopener Greg Mail (4), the visitors’ batsmen struggled. Batsmen succumbed regularly and the Blues were even unable to profit from at least two dropped chances inthe Western Australian field. Angel, Gavin Swan (3/34), Moody (1/22) and Brendon Julian (3/28) all applied the clamps on their opponents and no batsmen everlooked like breaking free. Only van Deinsen (29), Michael Bevan (28) and Mark Higgs (23) appeared so much as vaguely comfortable.Left with a target of just 132 to secure first innings points, Hussey and Campbell then sought to complement the fine work in the field that had seen them snare sevencatches between them. A confident opening stand of twenty-four ensued before the latter departed to his mistimed stroke. Nash, Clark and Lee bowled admirably, and never let the Warriors’ rate of progress reach unmanageable proportions. But Katich’s cameo, and the development of a neat, unbroken stand of twenty for thefifth wicket between Marcus North (13*) and Moody (9*) left the Warriors holding a very clear edge by the end of the day. If the North-Moody association is leftunchecked for too much longer when play resumes in the morning, then the Blues are likely to be experiencing serious headaches again tomorrow.

Gers fans rage at Martin article

Many Glasgow Rangers fans are livid over an article from newspaper columnist Helen Martin following the celebrations which took place at George Square at the weekend.

The last few days have been special for the Ibrox club. For the first time in 10 years, they lifted the Premiership title on Saturday after beating Aberdeen 4-0 at home – that also meant they went the entire league campaign unbeaten (BBC). As such, thousands of Rangers supporters took to the streets to celebrate. While there was some trouble – 20 fans were arrested (firstpost.com) – the scenes were generally peaceful and well-natured.

However, Martin clearly had another agenda on her mind. She concentrated solely on the few supporters who caused trouble and suggested that there is a widespread sectarian issue amongst the club’s fanbase – she even floated the idea of Rangers being put out of business (The Edinburgh News).

She shared the article on her Twitter page, and it attracted outrage from many Gers supporters. These fans took to the social media platform to share their thoughts on her “disturbing” remarks.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about Martin below

Newcastle suffer major blow before Leicester

Newcastle have suffered a major blow ahead of their Premier League clash against Leicester City on Friday night.

What’s the story?

Steve Bruce’s side face the Foxes off the back of a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Arsenal at St James’ Park last weekend, with the game seeing Fabian Schar return from injury and get sent off.

Now, The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder has confirmed that the Magpies’ attempt to get the red card rescinded and thus avoid a three-match ban have proved fruitless, and Schar will not be available for the Tyneside club starting with the game against Leicester tomorrow.

Relaying a club statement: “Newcastle United’s appeal against Fabian Schär’s red card, picked up during Sunday’s match against Arsenal, has been unsuccessful.

“Schär was dismissed by referee Mike Dean in the 90th minute of the game following a tackle on Gabriel Martinelli. An independent panel reviewed the incident following United’s appeal to the Football Association but has upheld the decision. The Swiss defender will miss United’s next three matches against Leicester City, Manchester City and Sheffield United.”

Bruce will be gutted

Speaking in his post-match press conference after the game against the Gunners, Bruce said: “The way it is at the moment and the rules are…there’s no tackles anymore. I don’t think it deserves a red. Maybe it’s a yellow.

“Is it dangerous? Not really. I have sympathy for Fabian Schar. He tries to win the tackle. Maybe a yellow card but certainly not a red.”

The Magpies boss clearly felt Schar was hard done by, so news that the FA have upheld the decision to stick with the on-pitch decision will surely leave him gutted.

To make matters worse, the centre-back had only just returned from a lengthy injury that had seen him miss the last ten Premier League games, so for Bruce to lose him again, this time down to suspension, is a hammer blow.

The three-match ban will now mean Schar will only return for the final game of the season.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are heading for a major mistake over this star…

Ex-Southampton target Hinteregger could cost £20m

In an exclusive interview with The Transfer Tavern, Daniel Pinder, Editor-in-Chief at Get German Football News, has claimed that Southampton will have to pay upwards of £20 million if they want to sign Martin Hinteregger this summer.

Southampton were linked with the centre back last summer and rumours have increased lately with Jannik Vestergaard linked with a move away to Tottenham Hotspur, which could potentially allow the Saints to reignite their interest in Hinteregger.

The 28-year old has been a mainstay in an Eintracht Frankfurt side that are currently in a position to qualify for the Champions League, ahead of teams such as Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Monchengladbach.

Spaking on how much Martin Hinteregger would cost Southampton and why he will likely cost that much, Pinder told The Transfer Tavern:

“Well he’s 28-years old now so he’s just entering his prime, and he’s got a contract until 2024 so I would say you’re looking at a fee upwards of £20 million.”

Frankfurt’s Director of Football, Fredi Bobic, is leaving the club at the end of the season which could cause an exodus of their top players to leave.

If they qualify for the Champions League though, that can convince their top players such as Hinteregger and Andre Silva to stay at the club amidst interest across Europe.
