Burgess fee revealed

An update has emerged on Cameron Burgess, regarding how much Ipswich have paid for the defender.

What’s the talk?

According to The Sun on Sunday (15/08/21, pg. 63) (via The 72), Ipswich agreed a £750k deal to sign the 25-year-old defender from League One rivals Accrington Stanley this month.

The Tractor Boys officially confirmed the signing on Sunday, with Burgess putting pen to paper on a three-year deal with the club.

Accy boss John Coleman confirmed that the Tractor Boys are closing in on the defender on Saturday, admitting that he believes the player is being sold for less than he is worth. He said:

“It looks like he’s going to Ipswich. I think the two sides agreed [on] a fee last night.”

“Me and [Andy] Holty are generally on the same page a lot of the time but this one wasn’t my decision.

“If it was my decision I would have held out for more money and I certainly didn’t want to lose him because I think he’s worth more.

“But we have got a decent fee for him and the chairman can carry on trying to make this club a better place to come to which, at the end of the day, is what everybody wants.”

Fans will be buzzing

Ipswich fans will surely be buzzing with this news as it appears as though Ipswich have picked up a bargain deal for the defender. Coleman’s comments suggest that the club should have paid more for Burgess than they have, given that he says he would have held out for more.

Looking at his statistics for Accrington in League One over the past 12 months or so, it is easy to see why his former boss believes Ipswich are getting a steal.

Of the players who are still at Portman Road, Nsiala’s WhoScored rating of 6.96 was the highest out of the centre-backs in League One.

So far this season, Ipswich have conceded four goals in their first two league outings and Luke Wolfenden’s score of 6.79 is the highest by any central defender, with Janoi Donacien also playing out of position at centre-back in both games.

Meanwhile, Burgess enjoyed a sensational 2020/21 campaign with Accrington. He averaged a phenomenal WhoScored rating of 7.22 across 44 appearances, winning 6.8 aerial battles and making 4.4 tackles and interceptions per game.

In his first match of the current season, he achieved a rating of 7.21 as he won 10 aerial battles, made six clearances and one block. He also put in a stout defensive display against Rotherham in the League Cup, winning 13 aerial battles and making three blocks as he recorded a rating of 7.62.

This shows that he has the quality to put in consistently excellent performances in League One at centre-back, which suggests that he has a good chance of being a success at Portman Road – in the third tier at least.

To pick up a player of that ilk without breaking seven figures appears to be a terrific deal for Ipswich on paper and the supporters will be delighted with this approach from the club. They will be buzzing that their side is being shrewd in the transfer market and snapping up bargains instead of overpaying on talent.

Pundit hopeful Joe Rodon gets more chances at Tottenham

The Evening Standard’s Jack Rosser reckons that Joe Rodon should be given more of a chance to impress at Tottenham next season.

Rodon made the surprise switch from Swansea City on Deadline Day last October, but never appeared as a regular first-choice option under Jose Mourinho last term despite those ahead of him not performing.

Both Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez, guilty of some dreadful mistakes, were regularly picked by the former Spurs boss, leaving Rodon to watch on from the bench and even the stands at times.

Rodon ended up making 15 appearances in all competitions, although that did include starts against Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United.

He ended up playing just one minute under Ryan Mason, but having caught the eye at the Euros, the Welshman could play a big part for Nuno Espirito Santo in 2021-2022, especially with Dier and Sanchez on the transfer list, and Toby Alderweireld expresseing his desire to leave north London.

Rosser told Football FanCast that more regular game-time could see the 23-year-old develop into a great centre-back:

“They’ve also got Joe Rodon, who was impressive in flashes last season, and I think with a run in the team could be a good centre-back.

“He was one of the best players in the Championship the year before they signed him, but he hasn’t really been given the chance to kick on. So, if you can get in a couple around him.”

WHU fans want to sign Embolo

West Ham United fans are eager to sign Breel Embolo after they were linked with a move for the Switzerland international.

This summer transfer window is an important one for the Hammers. Last term, they finished in sixth place in the Premier League table, meaning they will be competing in the Europa League group stages this coming season. However, they have made just one signing so far in Alphonse Areola (whufc.com), and they remain light in the striker position – David Moyes has just Michail Antonio at his disposal in that role.

They are looking at several strikers, it seems, and according to reliable club insider ExWHUemployee, the Irons are looking at Borussia Monchengladbach’s £14.4m-valued Breel Embolo (Transfermarkt). He has managed 14 goals and 14 assists in 75 games for the German side (Transfermarkt), while he also impresses for Switzerland at Euro 2020 as his country reached the quarter-finals.

The Hammers fans, it seems, want to capture the former Schalke man, and they took to social media platform Twitter to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about the Embolo link below

“Embolo would be an unbreel signing. Was class at the Euro’s and has matured a lot from when we wanted him a few years ago. Smart signing, but not enough to solve our striker problems. He would have to be accompanied by an Abraham”

“I’d be buzzing if we got embolo thought he looked really good at the euros”

“Unpopular opinion : breel embolo from Gladbach would be an underrated signing. His performance at euros sadly have put his price up. But he’s a fighter, RW, ST or AF. Explosive and faster than MA”

“We need someone simular to Antonio, Embolo is like a clone of Antonio he is fast and strong and doesn’t stop running. I would take Embolo ahead of Abraham, I rate him that highly”

“From what I seen in the euros I personally think he would be perfect for us! Get him in on loan and see what he can do”

“With the addition of those 3, who would you realistically go for? For me, Herrera from Man City, seen him a handful of times & every time he looks like he could add some strength & creativity in the midfield. I’d be happy with Embolo on loan, looked a handful in the Euro’s”

There are two different versions of the shirt, one being a pro version and the other a traditional style top.

Villa stuck with their traditional claret and blue for the home strip. A barcode style front is on show with blue sleeves and blue around the neck.

Mind games to the fore in the Rose Bowl

If you’ve watched the award winning movie, “A Beautiful Mind”, you would know what it’s like to be enthralled for half an event, only to be left feeling empty by the latter half. There were more than a few at the Rose Bowl at Southampton who walked away from the second day’s play thinking they should get half their ticket money back. While the first day was beautiful – weather and cricketwise – the second was ruled by the mind. Shaun Udal’s five-wicket bag apart, the first day was dominated by talk of the wicket. From talk, it graduated to demonstrations as the Hampshire batsmen formed a neat procession back to the pavilion. With the Kohima Regiment of the Royal Band drumming up what could have easily been a dirge, the local side were reduced from 59/1 to 101/8 before a bit of a slog at the end by Messrs. Mascarenhas and Hamblin saw Hampshire limp to 123 all out.A direct testament to the quality of the wicket was the fact that the Hampshire side lasted a mere 37.3 overs in their first innings. India’s bowlers managed to chalk up figures that flatter them beyond belief. Sanjay Bangar would never have seen figures of four for 40 at his home ground – the Karnail Singh Stadium. After a few overs of Tinu Yohannan were completed, it was obvious that Sourav Ganguly would be on in no time.He was. And Hampshire were off in equal time. The Indian skipper, sending down his medium pace deliveries got several balls to duck low even as a couple whizzed by the ears of increasingly frustrated batsmen. Ganguly returned three for ten from his four overs. To be quite honest, it was the kind of day where you had to drop all feelings of patriotism and parochialism and just support whichever team was batting. It would be easy to begin a tirade against the home association for the kind of wicket served up. However, if you do look back at the history of games at the Rose Bowl, you will find that the wicket boasts no more terrors than its cousins all over the country. It tends to favour the seamers early on before easing out nicely to let the batsmen get on with their job. “It’s not unusual to see sides being about 80 for four and ending up with over 350,” said Victor Isaacs, Hampshire scorer, who has probably watched more games at this venue than anyone else. The Indians, however, were in no mood for history lessons on the nature of the Hampshire wicket. With more than one player rapped painfully on the fingers and knuckles by deliveries that took off from a length, in their first essay, the Indians did not want to take any chances in their second knock. At about lunch time, with Hampshire eight down for 101, the chinese whispers made their way from the dressing rooms to the members’ pavilion to the Atrium Bar and yes, to the press box, that the Indians were reluctant to bat again on this wicket. It bears repeating, however, that these were mere rumours. And of course, to get a clarification on matters of this kind from cricket officials is like trying to play Beethoven on a plate with a fork and knife. You can beat away all you like, but you’ll never get more than a lot of noise. When openers Virender Sehwag and Wasim Jaffer walked out to bat, the audience heaved a collective sigh of relief. There were going to be no embarrassing scenes after all.And then wicketkeeper Adrian Aymes stood up to Dimitri Mascarenhas bowling with a shiny new cherry and a few gents and ladies looked up from their Pimms-lemonade, and raised an enquiring eyebrow. Then came Shaun Udal to bowl his offies in just the fifth over of the innings. His success in the first innings apart, one finds it hard to believe that Robin Smith intended to do a Martin Crowe by bringing his off-spinner on to bowl early. Perhaps captains of both sides, realising the nature of the wicket, had taken the only possible route.Ganguly too seemed to change his tactics, sending Bangar in at the fall of the first wicket – Sehwag 22 – and Ajay Ratra in when Wasim Jaffer was dismissed for 32.There was more chaos to follow. While Bangar helped himself to probably the easiest fifty of his life, Ratra scratched around, never looking comfortable, and before you knew it he was caught in the slips for 26. VVS Laxman, coming in to bat next was hit once in the midriff before patting a ball from James Hamblin straight back to him. He did not trouble the scorers. Ganguly came in next, stayed briefly, scoring 1, before he declared the innings close on 139 for four. This left Hampshire with a target of 253 with an hour and a day to play.Neil Johnson could not emulate his first innings form and chipped Bangar to Sehwag at square leg. Soon after, Will Kendall tickled one to slip and became Bangar’s second victim of the innings. Robin Smith (19 not out) and Hamblin (10 not out) took Hampshire through to stumps on 43 for two.To say the cricket to a back seat to the aforementioned events would be pushing things, but you would have to admit that a bit of friendly bowling to support batsmen is hardly the way to celebrate the great game. Oh yes, but it’s not just a great game, it’s also a funny old one.

Rangers could be set for Tavernier blow

Rangers captain James Tavernier has been linked with a move to the Premier League, and it would be a massive blow for Steven Gerrard if the defender were to leave Ibrox this summer.

According to 90min, Manchester United, Arsenal, Brighton and Norwich City are all keen on signing the 29-year-old after his sensational performances for Gerrard’s side last season.

Despite the former Wigan Athletic man signing a new contract back in April, it may be difficult for Rangers to turn down an offer from the likes of Manchester United or Arsenal this summer, whilst the wages on offer in the Premier League may well be enough to turn Tavernier’s head.

The right-back has been in superb form since joining the club in 2015, making 289 appearances in all competitions, in which he has contributed a very impressive 65 goals and 90 assists.

Last season saw the Englishman manage 19 goals and 16 assists from right-back, so it is no surprise that he is attracting serious interest from the Premier League this summer, as it seems clear that the Scottish Premiership is below his level.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-rangers-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Rangers transfer rumours and news!”]

The offer of Champions League football at Ibrox next season might previously have been enough to convince him to stay, but if Manchester United make an approach for him, then Rangers may well be forced to cash in on the £7.2m-rated defender.

It would be a devastating setback to lose such an influential player ahead of the Gers’ title defence and Champions League return next season, as he was their top goalscorer and assists provider last season. His performances before the season split earned him an incredible 7.75 rating from WhoScored, which was comfortably the best of any player in Gerrard’s squad.

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776″]

Therefore, Rangers should do all they can to keep Tavernier – who was described by Gerrard as a “powerhouse” last season – at Ibrox this summer, as it would be a huge blow to their squad if they were to lose him to a Premier League club this summer.

Outsider Picks for Euro 2021

Euro 2021 is around the corner and the tournament is set to receive record viewing figures, with the expanded competition welcoming more countries than ever before.

The event has a rich history of providing celebration stories for underdogs, from Greece’s unprecedented win in 2004 right through to Portugal’s 2016 victory despite not winning a single group match.

With a whopping 24 teams taking part in this year’s event, there’s more chance than ever that favourites will be undone by surprise results and it’s wise to expect the unexpected.

There can be real benefits for bettors in backing longshots as the odds often outweigh the likeliness of the result. OLBG are masters at finding the best value Euro bets, and they’ve created a list of tempting enhanced offers for punters to back.

With bookies creating new markets for their sites daily, there’s often benefit to be found in some higher odds markets. Here we pick out which markets are the best outsiders to consider backing at Euro 2021.

Best Young Player – Declan Rice

At 20/1, there is real value on Declan Rice to be named the Best Young Player of the Tournament at Euro 2021.

England are one of the favourites for the tournament and Rice is a nailed-on starter at the heart of Gareth Southgate’s England squad. Rice himself has had a breakthrough campaign which has seen him lead his West Ham side into qualification for European football next season, despite being written off earlier on. Chelsea are poised to make an offer for Rice which will be a blow for West Ham, but it’s rumoured their scouts already have a replacement lined up.

Central midfielders are often preferred by panellists when awards are given for player of the tournament, too. The inaugural award was given to Portugal’s Renato Sanches, and the youngster had a similar role to Rice, supporting a talented attacking line. If England do well, that will be a direct reflection on Rice’s ability to control and dominate the centre of the pitch.

The same logic is applied to the Player of the Tournament award. Every Player of the Tournament has been a central midfielder, Rice’s natural position, with the exception of Euro 2016 which was won by Antoine Griezmann.

Concede Most Tournament Goals – Hungary

Hungary are priced at 4/1 to concede the most goals at the tournament and despite their relatively impressive recent form, this looks like a certainty.

Hungary have been unfortunate to have been drawn in Group F – this year’s Group of Death – alongside three genuine contenders for the Euro 2021 title. With fixtures against France, Germany and Portugal, Hungary will be lucky to get even a point from the three group games. Marco Rossi’s side will come up against some of the greatest strikers on the planet in Kylian Mbappe, Timo Werner and Cristiano Ronaldo, all of which will be eager to add to their bulging international goal records.

Hungary don’t have any players who are widely known and have an inexperienced backline with little history of playing against quality opposition. It is likely that goal difference will be a key factor when deciding who progresses to the knockout phase of the competition for this group and, as a result, it’s expected that Hungary will not be let off the hook at any stage.

Top Assists – Jack Grealish

Jack Grealish has benefited from an exceptional season as Aston Villa captain and the progress of the team is clearly down to his influence and ability.

Grealish is fleet of foot and full of flair – perfect for a creative force and one who can create chances from nothing. The 25-year-old was the most fouled player in the Premier League, and that’s testimony to his trickery. If a goal is scored directly from the free kick or penalty which Grealish has earned, the assist is registered to him and that’s one key reason why the lofty 16/1 odds bookies have on him to finish as the Top Assister are tempting.

England have a relatively simple group in Euro 2021 playing Croatia, Scotland and Czech Republic in Group D. The talented forward line of Harry Kane, Jadon Sancho and Phil Foden should attract opposition defences and allow pockets of space for Grealish to operate in which he wouldn’t usually have when playing for Villa.

A good performance in Euro 2021 could also put Grealish in the shop window and attract a bid from one of Europe’s top clubs. The playmaker has already been linked with a summer move to Manchester City but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see other suiters try to acquire his signature.

Tottenham open to selling Harry Winks

According to a report by Stretty News, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is now open to selling Harry Winks this summer as talks with Manchester United emerge.

The Lowdown: Mass exodus?

The 25-year-old, who started just nine Premier League games last season between the reigns of Jose Mourinho and Ryan Mason, has been touted as a player who could leave north London this summer.

Indeed, reliable Spurs correspondent Alasdair Gold believes that Winks is a possible candidate for the exit door alongside the likes of Erik Lamela, Serge Aurier, Moussa Sissoko and Juan Foyth (football.london).

Spurs will need to adopt a sell-to-buy policy this summer amid the global pandemic, meaning that players will have to be offloaded before any incoming transfer activity at the club.

The Latest: Levy open to selling Winks…

Stretty News have brought a development stating that Tottenham and Manchester United have held talks in their ‘infancy’ over a possible transfer for Winks this summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-news/” title=”Spurs latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Levy’s mind is said to be made up, with the chairman now open to selling him, and he could demand in the region of £25m.

Amid the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Paul Pogba, Manchester United are apparently targeting the Englishman and it is believed that the Red Devils recruitment team are ‘big admirers’. Indeed, as per this report, United could look to capitalise on Winks’ uncertain future in north London. [Stretty News]

The Verdict: Get it done Levy…

Spurs need a ‘painful’ rebuild, as best described by Mauricio Pochettino more than two years ago, and the only way to start overhauling this squad is by selling surplus-to-requirements players. Winks arguably falls into that category given how rarely he featured last term and Spurs could look to recoup some much needed financing off his sale this summer.

At 25 years of age and homegrown, he could still hold some market value given that other clubs will likely be looking to add English talent to meet squad quota requirements.

A tidy midfield operator, as evident by his 90% pass accuracy across eight Europa League starts last season, Winks has also been called a ‘phenomenal player’ by Emile Heskey despite his lack of game-time (HITC).

Therefore, it is no surprise that clubs are interested in the England international, and the best outcome for everybody involved is perhaps a sure-fire sale.
