Aston Villa journalist drops Mings verdict after £60m claim

Aston Villa rate Tyrone Mings very highly and are willing to accept his flaws, journalist Luke Hatfield has told Football FanCast.

This comes after former Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor claimed his old side would not sell Mings for £60m.

The 28-year-old central defender has been such an important figure for manager Dean Smith, making 36 appearances in the Premier League last season.

Mings can be prone to making the odd mistake now and again, something some pundits have been quick to notice and criticise.

Given his playing style, though, it is something Villa accept and they still rate him very highly, according to Hatfield of the Express & Star.

“He does have a little bit of a mistake in him now and then, but I think Villa are willing to accept that, because he is brave on the ball and willing to play out,” the Aston Villa journalist said.

“He is capable of those long passes in behind and I think we’ve seen it, not only for Villa but also for England at times, where he is willing to put that long ball forward. So he does have his flaws it’s fair to say, but he’s still an improving player as well and at centre-back, you’ve got plenty of years left in the tank.

“Villa clearly rate him highly and Dean Smith does see him as one of his favourites.”

£60m would obviously be a lot of money to turn down. But given all of the above, it is not hard to imagine Villa rejecting big bids for the England international.

When you also look at their determination to keep hold of captain Jack Grealish, simply put, the Villans are not coming across as a selling club.

Twenty20 could upstage ODIs – Dravid

Rahul Dravid, the former Indian captain, felt one-day cricket will be the sore loser especially in the aftermath of Twenty20 cricket’s tremendous success worldwide. He said the busy international schedule could force the number of one-dayers to be reduced.”There is a limited amount of time. Twenty20 cricket is popular now so something has to give”, Dravid said at a discussion forum organised to unveil the Castrol Asian Cricket awards, to be announced during the Asia Cup in Pakistan which starts this month. Dravid, Wasim Akram and Sanath Jayasuriya are part of the panel that will oversee the process that will pick the winners in various categories.Dravid, who captained the Bangalore Royal Challengers during the Indian Premier League (IPL), said he understood the decision to hold the Twenty20 World Cup every two years and the IPL once a year. But he hoped Test cricket would not be severely affected. “The number of one-day games might get reduced,” he said. “I hope they don’t reduce Test matches, too.”Asked if Asia could match its strong financial muscle with on-field cricketing prowess, all three had no doubt the subcontinent would soon rise to become the undisputed superpower.Akram, the former Pakistan captain, felt India could dominate through on-field performances too. “India could well rule the world in the next few years,” Akram said. Jayasuriya said though the Asian nations have the talent, the challenge lies in channeling this talent in the right direction. “We are the financial powerhouse of cricket. Now we need the support to direct the talent in the right direction.”Dravid’s view was more circumspect. “Just because we have the opportunities it doesn’t mean we will rule the world. Opportunities have always been there. The challenge is to harness the talent. The number of off-shore events that you had earlier in 50-overs cricket might be reduced to accommodate a few more Twenty20 tournaments or Twenty20 World Cup every two years, or the IPL every year or some other tournament.”

Pundit wouldn’t blame James Rodriguez for returning to Madrid

Marcus Bent has exclusively told The Transfer Tavern that James Rodriguez couldn’t turn down a return to Real Madrid.

Rodriguez arrived at Goodison Park from the Spanish giants 12 months ago but has been linked with a return to Madrid following the re-appointment of Carlo Ancelotti last month.

He only signed a two-year contract when he made the switch to the Premier League, meaning he recently entered the final 12 months of that deal.

And according to the Daily Mail, the Colombian is keen on reuniting with Ancelotti already, who he has been signed by twice previous in his career – the first being for Madrid from Monaco in 2014.

Rodriguez made a bright start to life at Everton, contributing six goals in his first five Premier League games as Ancelotti’s men topped the table during the early parts of the season.

But injuries and a loss of form made for a frustrating final few months for the 29-year-old, and therefore Bent wouldn’t blame him for leaving Everton.

He told The Transfer Tavern:

“Ancelotti liked him, going to Real Madrid, and wanting to sign him.

“If social media are talking sense, then that’s where you want to go – you can’t turn down Real Madrid. And if you’ve got to go, you’ve got to go.”

Roberts drops huge transfer claim on £45m-rated Spurs man

Former Tottenham Hotspur hero Graham Roberts insists that Tanguy Ndombele needs to leave the club this summer after failing to adapt to life in the Premier League.

Ndombele endured a difficult season at Spurs in the 2020/21 season under the management of Jose Mourinho.

The £200,000-a-week France international made a total of 28 starts in the Premier League but completed the 90 minutes just six times.

In total, he scored three goals and laid on two assists in the league and he remains the most expensive player to ever join the club, with the north London side having paid £53.8m to bring him in from Lyon two summers ago.

Roberts, though, remains unconvinced by the talents of the 24-year-old, who signed a long-term contract and is tied to the club until 2025.

He is valued at £45m by Transfermarkt and reports have suggested that he is being eyed by Real Madrid, who appear to have been convinced by his talents.

And Roberts thinks he ought to move away from the club in a bid to relaunch his career.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, he said: “I think Ndombele needs to move on because I think he can’t get the pace of the Premier League.”

Rangers transfer update on Borre

Many Rangers fans have been left buzzing as a transfer update emerged on Santos Borre.

As per Football Insider, the Glasgow club have set their sights on signing the River Plate ace in just a couple of weeks, as he is out of contract at the end of June.

The Argentine outfit valued him at £15m, but now look very likely to lose him for nothing.

Sources from the Ibrox faithful have told the news outlet that this has alerted the Light Blues, who now have a concrete interest in a deal in the summer window.

However, Steven Gerrard’s men will face competition from a number of other teams for Borre’s signature.

The striker has played senior men’s football since he was just a teenager, and has since played no fewer than in 212 games in total over the course of his club career, including at UEFA Europa League winners Villarreal (Transfermarkt).

Borre has scored 74 goals and made a further 23 assists in those matches, and has even been capped four times at senior international level with Colombia (Transfermarkt).

An international teammate of Alfredo Morelos, he could link up very well with the forward, and at 25 years of age, has still not reached his peak yet.

Rangers fans on Borre transfer update

These Gers buzzed as the transfer update was shared on Twitter, with one RFC supporter even going as far as to claim that they were ‘begging’ for him to sign, while another claimed that he would be a ‘bargain’:

Otago make meal of first innings effort

Otago made rather a sandwich of their first innings of only 241 when they won the toss and batted first on the opening day of their State Championship match against Auckland at Colin Maiden Park today

Don Cameron25-Feb-2002Otago made rather a sandwich of their first innings of only 241 when they won the toss and batted first on the opening day of their State Championship match against Auckland at Colin Maiden Park today. The sandwich had a substantial and hearty filling built round a marvellous 111 by the 26-year-old captain Craig Cumming, supported by a solid and patient 39 by the No 6 batsman Craig Pryor. These two put on 106 for the fifth wicket. Sadly, the outside parts of the Otago sandwich were soggy bread. The first four wickets were lost for 81 runs. The last six went for 54 runs. There were few demons in the pitch, as Auckland showed in the 19 overs before stumps when they scored 56 without loss from 19 overs. Mark Richardson was 43 not out (eight fours) and promised, or threatened, depending on the point of view, to do some substantial damage to his old Otago team-mates tomorrow.Otago also face the prospect that another southern favourite Matt Horne has been in wonderful form this summer, and only a bruised foot (a temporary injury) prevented him from joining Richardson in the entree this evening.Otago lost Robbie Lawson for one in the fifth over, but once Simon Beare had made a nervous start (his three previous innings were ducks) and Cumming quickly settled in Otago prospered. These two went steadily along to 62 before Beare, 98 minutes over his 22, misjudged the line of Gareth Shaw’s medium-fast line, and shouldered arms while his middle stump was being knocked out. Chris Gaffaney went quickly, also to Shaw and when Andrew Hore gave Chris Drum his second wicket without scoring Otago were 81 for four, and had wasted good batting conditions. With Pryor showing poise and good judgement, Cumming was able lead a counter-attack of quite splendid quality. The Otago skipper’s fifth first-class century was not an affair of sparkling stroke-play from some fancy batting manual. Rather Cumming batted with quite marvellous efficiency, and with the rare ability to make the most of any ball that did not threaten his castle.Pryor gradually joined in the counter-thrust, and while the first 50 of their partnership was a solid foundation, the second 50 produced a flow of firmly-struck boundaries by Cumming, and with Pryor occasionally lending an attacking hand.Cumming sailed past the 100 in 216 minutes, from 157 balls and there seemed the prospect that he and Pryor would completely dominate an Auckland attack without any sharp teeth left.Unfortunately for Otago Pryor lifted a solid drive at Tama Canning’s bowling and at a shortish cover Llorne Howell took a brilliant two-handed catch. All a sudden, the face of the game changed. Cumming seemed to be half-forward when given out lbw to Canning – Otago 194 for six.Martyn Croy played some solid blows, but he, too, fell to a fine catch by Howell, and the door was open for the Auckland bowlers.Suddenly Brooke Walker, the Auckland captain and leg-spinner, began to confuse the Otago tail-enders with the ball which went quickly and straight through. This brought him three lbw victims, from Barry Frost, the umpire, which took the last three Otago wickets at 232, 236 and 241.So Otago, which probably needed a first innings of 300-plus to justify batting first in favourable conditions, fell seriously short of their target, and they must have had the worry beads out tonight as they regarded the mastery that Richardson enjoyed before stumps.

Seven wickets each for Malcolm and Martin-Jenkins in Championship

On the second day of the Frizzell County Championship Division One match featuring the leaders, Surrey, Ian Blackwell led Somerset to a 33 run first innings lead at The Oval. When he was out lbw to Ian Salisbury, he was just two short of a century and had faced 112 balls, striking 15 fours. Had anyone else other than Rob Turner and Jamie Cox with 34 apiece been able to support Blackwell, Somerset’s lead would have been that much greater. Martin Bicknell was Surrey’s most successful bowler with four wickets. In Surrey’s second innings, Mark Butcher fell early to Andrew Caddick and Mark Ramprakash was run out when Surrey had moved one run in front. They had lost Graham Thorpe before the close at which point they led by 54.Although Shaun Udal played a useful innings of 43 not out for Hampshire at Headlingley, a major contribution to the total came from extras. There were 54 of them, including 36 no balls. Matthew Hoggard came through a difficult time for him with four wickets. Michael Vaughan had an innings of 54 for Yorkshire, which at least negated the extras, and Craig White played an uncharacteristically slow innings to be 49 not out at the close from 132 balls as Yorkshire finished 180 runs in arrears.Robin Martin-Jenkins made sure that Leicestershire could not make significant progress from their overnight position by taking the last three wickets to fall to finish with seven for 51 at Horsham. Richard Montgomerie then carried his bat to finish 122 not out as the rest of the Sussex batting collapsed in the face of Devon Malcolm. The 39-year-old paceman finished with seven for 76. Batting again, Leicestershire extended their first innings lead of 17 to finish the day on 94 for two.In Division Two, there were runs all down the order for Durham as they declared on 470 for eight at Chester-le-Street against Gloucestershire. Top scorer was Andrew Pratt who was run out for 93, while acting captain Paul Collingwood and Gordon Muchall both recorded half-centuries. Gloucestershire soon ran into trouble when they batted, losing six wickets before the hundred has been posted. At the close, they trailed by 375.At Trent Bridge, Tony Penberthy and Darren Cousins extended their last wicket partnership for Northamptonshire to 81 before Cousins was out, leaving Penberthy undefeated on 106. Andrew Harris took the last wicket to finish with four in the innings. Cousins then entered into a bowling partnership with Carl Greenidge as the Nottinghamshire top order failed to show the same resilience as the Northamptonshire tail. When bad light stopped play, the home side were 184 for seven, still 93 runs behind.
