Man Utd receive triple injury boost

Manchester United have received a potential triple injury boost ahead of their Premier League encounter with Crystal Palace at Old Trafford this afternoon.

What’s the word?

New interim manager Ralf Rangnick is set to take charge of his first game in the Red Devils’ dugout when the Eagles visit today.

The German will be desperate to kickstart his reign with a positive result, and he could be aided in his mission to do just that by the return of influential trio Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Nemanja Matic.

While Rangnick’s first press conference on Friday was dominated by his long-term vision, former boss Michael Carrick provided fitness updates on Wednesday.

“We’re just being careful with Luke, assessing day by day. Hopefully, he won’t be too far away,” the 40-year-old said, before going on to assess Wan-Bissaka and Matic.

“Touch and go. (Callum) Hudson-Odoi stood on his hand (last Sunday), so he’s in a fair bit of pain. Nemanja has picked up a little niggle. He’s felt his hamstring, so he’s out.”

A recent report from Manchester Evening News suggested that all three could return to action for today’s intriguing clash with Palace.

Ralf Rangnick will be delighted

The reports that Shaw, Wan-Bissaka and Matic may all be able to feature today after missing out on the midweek clash with Arsenal will leave Rangnick feeling delighted, given their importance to the side.

Although the two full-backs have failed to consistently find their best form this season, they have remained the Red Devils’ first-choice options, and their underlying numbers indicate why.

As per WhoScored, Wan-Bissaka has averaged 2.2 tackles per league game this season, placing him second amongst his teammates, while also producing 1.3 interceptions, more than any of his colleagues.

Meanwhile, the more attack-minded Shaw has made 1.9 key passes, more than any United player bar Bruno Fernandes, and tops the crossing charts with 1.7.

The experience of Matic could also be hugely beneficial if the 33-year-old is able to return to the matchday squad, giving Rangnick the best possible chance of securing all three points.

Rangers hoping to bring Zeb Jacobs to Ibrox

An update has emerged regarding the make-up of new Rangers boss Gio van Bronckhorst’s backroom staff at Ibrox as he aims to bounce back from the Gers’ crippling defeat last weekend…

What’s the talk?

According to Gazet van Antwerpen, via Sport Witness, the Dutchman is hoping to complete a deal to land Royal Antwerp talent coordinator Zeb Jacobs in the coming days.

The report claims that there is a concrete interest from Rangers in the 26-year-old, who currently works on youth development with the Belgian outfit, and they are looking to finalise a move ‘soon’.

Buzzing

Rangers fans will surely be buzzing with this news as it suggests that van Bronckhorst wants to place an emphasis on youth development at Ibrox. Jacobs is said to have impressed Gers chiefs with his work in Belgium – developing young players and helping them progress into the first team.

This means that he could come in and help to bridge the gap between the academy and the senior team. Whether that means he will come in and directly work with the starting XI with a specific focus on the younger players or in the academy helping the stars of tomorrow push on to reach van Bronckhorst’s side remains to be seen, but it is good news either way for supporters who want to see the next ‘one of their own’ play at Ibrox.

Nathan Patterson is currently part of the first-team set-up and playing a backup role to James Tavernier at right-back and Jacobs’ arrival could potentially help him kick on and nail down a starting berth.

The likes of Juan Alegria, Aaron Cervantes and Tony Weston could also benefit as they attempt to make the leap from academy football to making their Scottish Premiership debuts.

This is why the Ibrox faithful will be buzzing with this news as it could see a number of young players make their way at Rangers, should Jacobs have the desired impact upon his arrival.

They will also be delighted with van Bronckhorst wanting to make this a priority as it shows that he is willing to offer chances to younger players and will not rely on senior heads to get him out of every situation.

It is now down to Ross Wilson and the Dutchman to ensure that they can iron out a deal with Antwerp in the coming days to bring him to Ibrox.

Somachanda de Silva, the president of Sri Lanka Cricket’s interim committee, told Cricinfo that the decision to appoint Law, the former Australia batsman, in place of Paul Farbrace – who has joined Kent as head coach – was taken at a meeting today.de Silva revealed that Venkatesh Prasad, the former India bowling coach released from that post last week, was also a contender for the post and had submitted “a strong application” but the SLC decided in favour of Law as he suited their requirements better.”We felt that Law, who has a good knowledge of cricket and conditions around the world, was more suited for the job,” de Silva told Cricinfo. “But I must admit that Prasad was a strong contender too. Moving ahead, we would like Law to be there till the 2011 World Cup but we are yet to formalise a contract. Villa fans react to Bailey admission

Aston Villa’s Leon Bailey was ‘blowing’ after returning from injury last time out against Arsenal, manager Dean Smith says.

Bailey was introduced at half-time at The Emirates, with Villa trailing 2-0.

It was his first appearance since a goalscoring cameo in the 3-0 win over Everton on 18 September.

A hamstring injury had sidelined him for three games.

Finally a full debut for Bailey?

Bailey could be in line to make his start for the club since his £30million summer move from Bayer Leverkusen in Sunday’s clash with West Ham United.

But that will only be if Smith believes he is fit enough after he undergoes an assessment on Saturday.

Selecting a winger in Bailey could see Smith change formation, moving away from 3-5-2 in favour of a front three.

Villa are looking to halt a run of three consecutive defeats against the Hammers, who travel to the Midlands buoyed by back-to-back wins.

Birmingham Mail journalist Ashley Preece relayed Smith’s press conference comments, and here’s what Villa supporters made of them.

Wolves star Conor Coady tipped to leave

Newcastle United should look to sign Wolves centre-back Conor Coady in January, according to former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan.

The Lowdown: Coady shines at Wolves

Coady has been a fantastic servant for Wolves, making 286 appearances for the club and fully deserving his role as captain.

The 28-year-old’s leadership has shone through at Molineux and he has been a model of consistency at the heart of the defence, both in the Championship and the Premier League.

The Latest: Captain tipped for January exit

With Newcastle receiving an influx of money after their recent takeover, however, they could be looking at signing various players in January.

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan claimed Coady would be an ideal addition to the Magpies’ squad:

“He’s a brilliant defender and consistency is what you will get from him.

“Newcastle have struggled defensively for a number of years now, so getting a defender like him into the spine of that side will be massive.

“That’s the first place I’d be looking. You have Wilson, Saint-Maximin and Almiron in the attack, so you have enough there but the frailties are at the back and at centre-half, for me.

“Conor Coady is a player you would be more than happy with at your football club. He’s got the leadership qualities, he’s an England international now and he is a very consistent performer for Wolves.”

The Verdict: Potential huge blow

Coady might not necessarily be the most athletically gifted footballer around, but he has a huge influence at Wolves, both on and off the pitch.

For that reason, the thought of losing him doesn’t bear thinking about, with the Englishman very much the heart of the squad and almost a second manager on the pitch.

It remains to be seen if Newcastle will make a bid, but Wolves should demand huge money if they do.

Skip IPL to rest, says former India physio

John Gloster, the former India physio, has suggested that the Indian players skip the IPL ahead of the major ICC tournaments and tours to avoid mental fatigue. Gloster said the players must be feeling the strain of playing away from home for lengthy periods, which puts additional pressure on their family life. All the Indian players who participated in the five-week IPL in South Africa also played in the ICC World Twenty20 in England shortly afterwards. However, the defending champions couldn’t get further than the Super Eights and their coach Gary Kirsten had said fatigue levels and minor injuries from the IPL led to their exit.”Although the IPL has helped bring an revolution in world cricket, it’s still wiser to avoid it if it’s close to any important series because it involves too much of travelling and stress,” Gloster told the . “The cricketers who played in the IPL in South Africa may be mentally tired and were not ready for the huge pressure of the ICC World T20. A hectic schedule may rock the family lives of players. Perhaps no other country has as strong family bonds as the Indians.”The BCCI has said in the past that the players have the option of opting out of tours to rest and recuperate but Gloster felt the BCCI should play a more active role in monitoring injuries closely.”I feel the BCCI should have a medical board because questions of fitness and injury sometimes create confusion, especially if it comes from the team management,” Gloster said.MS Dhoni, the captain, set an example when he skipped the Test leg of the tour of Sri Lanka after being on the road for several months without a break. His decision raised eyebrows but Gloster felt the public should understand the situation from the player’s point of view.”Dhoni is a class cricketer. But sometimes the burden of expectations weigh the players down,” he said. “And when they fail to perform, they are criticised from all quarters.”While working with the Indian team, Gloster observed that the players often missed their families and that home sickness is a factor that cannot be ignored.”I spent much time in India and have an Indian wife. So I know what are the emotional needs of Indians, who have been away from their homes for months,” he said. “For a player like Sachin Tendulkar, it’s difficult to keep away from the family for longer periods. Sachin loves his family and I believe he is not happy spending much time away from home.”

Postecoglou drops January transfer claim

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has revealed he is already sounding out targets to bring to Parkhead in the January transfer window.

What’s been said?

In recent comments cited by the Daily Record, the 56-year-old manager claimed that he is already targeting a number of players in the Japanese market ahead of the winter window, following the success of summer signing Kyogo Furuhashi.

However, the Bhoys boss went on to claim that it’s not just the J-League he will be tapping up for new additions to his squad, as well as suggesting that the club have started talks with a number of targets in an effort to complete deals more efficiently in the window.

Speaking about his plans for January, Postecoglou said: “It’s no secret we still need to add to the squad. We were never going to do it in one transfer window, especially when you look at the significant exits we had.

“It was always going to be a two or three window process so we’re looking at January at the moment. We know the areas we need to bolster. It’s about getting more players that I believe can play the type of football we want to play. That’s what we’re trying to target. We will definitely be adding something to the squad.

“Japan is one of the markets we’ll be looking at. Obviously, I know it really well and they will get to the end of their season, which is a good time if there’s anyone who will fit into our set-up. We will be looking everywhere. The last window was frantic. This time we want to be planning well in advance.

“We’ve identified targets and begun discussions before we get to January so that we can conclude deals a lot quicker than we did in the previous window.”

Fans will be buzzing

While Celtic’s win at Aberdeen on Sunday saw the Bhoys end their unwanted record of having failed to secure a win away from Parkhead this season, the club’s results so far in the current campaign are clear evidence that Postecoglou needs further reinforcements in order to progress the Hoops’ transition under the Greek-Australian manager.

Indeed, at present, Celtic find themselves languishing down in sixth place in the Scottish Premiership table, having already suffered three defeats in the league.

The picture does not look much better in Europe, with the Bhoys having conceded eight goals and recorded two losses over their two Europa League fixtures this term – leaving the club rooted to the foot of the Group G standings, and looking highly unlikely to make it to the knockout stages of the competition.

As such, the news that Postecoglou and Celtic have already begun their planning for the January transfer window is sure to have fans buzzing, as it is clear that following a number of high profile departures this summer, the current Celtic squad is some way short of being at the standard required.

West Ham could revisit Lingard interest

West Ham United may have seen an approach for Jesse Lingard rebuffed in the summer but they could well revisit their interest at the turn of the year, according to reports…

What’s the word?

The Evening Standard’s Jack Rosser claims that there have been suggestions of a fresh approach for the England international during the January transfer window should he not get the game time he wants at Manchester United.

It’s thought that the 28-year-old midfielder has rejected the Red Devils’ latest offer of a new contract, despite himself turning down a return to the London Stadium before deadline day.

Lingard is now into the final year of his £100k-per-week deal and will be free to leave the club for nothing next summer if no agreement is found.

He is yet to start a match for United this season but played a starring role in England’s win over Andorra last week as he seeks to prove his worth to Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer at his boyhood club.

Go get him in January

Of course, many supporters were desperate to see Lingard return to east London after a fruitful loan spell saw him provide nine goals and five assists but you can’t really begrudge him for trying to make an impact at the team he’s been at for 21 years of his life.

Assistant manager Stuart Pearce even reiterated their desire to sign him permanently to talkSPORT but as evident above, his chances of coming back were always going to be slim.

“The ball is in Manchester United’s court. He is contracted to them. We would like him with us, there is no doubt about that,” he said. “He’s a special lad and was very good around the players – the players really like him. His ability shone out last year and gave us a great option in our squad. You never know, but at this moment in time it looks like he is fighting for a place in the United line-up.”

However, it’s a move that cannot be ruled out in the long term.

Lingard could actually be making a very smart decision as the ball is firmly in his court. If he gets minutes, he can sign a new deal. If he doesn’t, then surely he will be eager for another crack at redemption with the Irons.

Hammers boss David Moyes has signed a replacement in former Everton flop Nikola Vlasic, something that needed to happen considering the void that would’ve been left behind and the Croatian playmaker does look like a good alternative, having delivered 12 goals and six assists in all competitions in 2020/21.

Although, that shouldn’t put the Scotsman off from doubling up in the role, particularly as Lingard can also play out wide and in deeper midfield, thus giving him plenty of options in the future.

The £19.8m-rated dynamo, who has now been capped 31 times by England, would be the sort of signing in January – or next summer – that would keep the east Londoners competing at the top, which is the next task after last season’s sixth-place finish.

If the opportunity arises in the future, then Moyes and co would be foolish to not bring Lingard back to the club. Their chances of doing so have certainly been bolstered by this latest contract update and it’s a move that would go down very well with the Irons’ fanbase.
