Trea Turner’s 1500th Hit Also Helped Break a Brutal Streak That Haunted His Season

Trea Turner accomplished an impressive feat on Monday night, recording the 1,500th hit of his MLB career. It’s a tribute to his longevity, his talent at the plate, and his consistency year after year.

But there’s another reason that Turner was likely even more excited about the hit that cleared the milestone—it was his first home run of the year at Citizens Bank Park.

In the second inning, with two men on and the Phillies already holding a 2–0 lead over Seattle, Turner took Logan Gilbert out of the park.

It was the 13th home run of the season for Turner, but somehow, the first 12 of his year had all come on the road. While Turner has been having a stellar year at the plate—he leads the NL in hits—Phillies fans had grown somewhat concerned that his power had apparently stalled at home.

Turner had himself a full day at the plate, going 4-for-6 with five RBIs and two runs scored. He wasn’t the only Phillie to tee off, as teammate Bryce Harper hit two dingers of his own against the Mariners, and the team finished with 21 hits—the most they’ve had at Citizens Bank Park in more than 15 years.

While the team awaits news on pitcher Zach Wheeler’s health, the Phillies' bats are going to have to be extra active to keep them in the hunt for a title.

Mets Broadcast Showcases What PitchCom Transmitters Sound Like in MLB Player's Ears

MLB has used PitchCom since 2022 so pitchers and catchers can transmit calls instead of visually giving signs. The transmitters have helped with the pitch clock, too, since pitchers now have less time to shake off signs. But have you ever heard what the system sounds like in a player's ear?

Well, SNY and New York Mets field reporter Steve Gelbs gave us a walkthrough on Thursday night of the sounds that are passed directly into the ears of MLB stars as calls are made. The default English setting sounds like a generic, almost Siri-like voice spewing pitch types and locations. You can watch the fun segment and hear it for yourself below:

Gelbs mentioned there are default Spanish sounds, too, which includes all pitches and calls except for "sweeper" because, well, there isn't a Spanish word for sweeper.

The device is customizable allowing you to record your own calls or in other languages, which some players and clubs have had fun with before. This isn't the first time we've seen a PitchCom demo at the MLB level as the Colorado Rockies went through how they use the devices last season.

Still, it's a great inside baseball segment that probably helped a lot of fans figure out why pitchers are always messing with their hats or covering their ears with their gloves.

One mystery still stands, though—who is the mysterious PitchCom voice? Gelbs asked that question and didn't get a clear answer, but he did provide a prime suspect—the PitchCom founder, which could either be John Hankins or Craig Filicetti.

Aroldis Chapman Rips Yankees, Says He’d Rather Retire Than Play for Them

Aroldis Chapman has seen both sides of the Yankee-Red Sox rivalry, having pitched for New York for seven seasons and now Boston this past season. And, as Chapman made crystal clear during a recent appearance on the podcast, he doesn't intend on ever going back to the other side of the rivalry.

"No way, not even dead," Chapman said in Spanish in response to being asked if he'd ever play for the Yankees again. "If I were told that I was being traded to New York, I'd pack my things and go home. I'll retire right on the spot if that happens. I'm not crazy. Never again."

Why does Chapman feel so adamantly about never playing for the Yankees again?

"I dealt with a lot of disrespect [with the Yankees]," Chapman said. "I put up with a lot of things. I knew that they just wanted to find a way to get rid of me, but they didn't know how. And I just dealt with it quietly, kept playing, and doing what I always do."

Chapman was dealt to the Yankees in December of 2015 in exchange for four minor league players amidst allegations into a domestic violence incident allegedly involving the talented relief pitcher. Citing conflicting accounts and insufficient evidence, prosecutors declined to convict Chapman, though he received a 30-game suspension from MLB.

Chapman, after recording a 2.01 ERA and 20 saves in his first 31 games with the Yankees, was dealt to the Chicago Cubs at the 2016 trade deadline, then later reunited with the Yankees on a five-year deal that ensuing winter.

Chapman, a hard-throwing lefthander who routinely hits triple digits with his fastball, was largely effective during his tenure with the Yankees. From 2017 to 2022, he recorded the fifth-most saves in MLB, a 3.05 ERA and posted a 37 percent strikeout rate.

Unfortunately, for Chapman, his Yankee tenure was remembered more for two key home runs he allowed in the postseason, a 2019 American League Championship Series-winning dinger served up to Astros star Jose Altuve and a ninth-inning go-ahead blast to then-Rays infielder Mike Brousseau in the 2020 American League Division Series.

Chapman and ths Yankees also didn't seem to end their relationship on the best of terms.

Chapman's disappointing end to Yankees' tenure

In August of 2022, his last season in the Bronx, Chapman was placed on the 15-day injured list due to a "pretty bad infection" arising from a new tattoo he had recently got at the time. While the Yankees publicly showed no signs of frustration with the flamethrowing closer amid the unfortunate situation, that would soon change later that year.

Days before the Yankees were set to take on the Guardians in the ALDS, Chapman, after disappointing for much of the season, skipped a mandatory team workout and was then fined and subsequently left off the ALDS roster. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman was openly critical of Chapman, calling his absence "disappointing" and questioning whether the eight-time All-Star was "all in."

Judging by Chapman's words, it seems pretty clear who he directs his ire towards with the Yankees.

"I got along well with all the players," Chapman said. "Never had a problem with anybody, even the manager. We're friends and we talk and everything. The bosses are the ones who make those decisions."

Chapman bounced from the Royals to the Rangers—with whom he won his second World Series title—and the Pirates before signing with Boston last winter. He pitched to a 1.17 ERA with 32 saves for the Red Sox in '25.

Dodgers 2026 Free Agents: 7 Players Not Under Contract for World Series Three-Peat

The Dodgers are champions once again.

Behind a dramatic game-tying homer in the ninth inning from Miguel Rojas and a superhuman effort from Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Los Angeles defeated the Blue Jays 5–4 in 11 innings on Friday night to clinch its second straight World Series title.

The Dodgers now have a chance to become the third franchise in MLB history to win at least three straight World Series championships, and the first since the Yankees from 1998 to 2000.

Looking at the Dodgers’ roster, the star core of the team will return in 2026. Tyler Glasnow, Mookie Betts, Blake Snell, Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman and Yamamoto are all signed well past the 2026 campaign.

The Dodgers will have six players hit arbitration this offseason, and they have a $10 million team option on slugger Max Muncy and a $3.55 million team option to potentially bring back Alex Vesia. But there are seven players whose contracts will officially expire once the offseason begins. Here they are:

Michael Conforto, OF

The Conforto experiment did … not work out in Los Angeles.

The Dodgers signed Conforto to a one-year contract worth $17 million back in December after he hit 20 homers for the rival Giants in 2024. In 138 games this year, Conforto batted just .199/.305/.333 with 12 homers and a 79 OPS+—the first time he logged a below-average OPS+ since 2016. Conforto was left off the Dodgers’ postseason roster and had to watch as Kiké Hernández and Alex Call took his spot in left field.

Miguel Rojas, IF

The Dodgers’ trusty veteran transformed from a bench player to a World Series hero on Saturday night, hitting the game-tying home run with one out in the ninth inning of Game 7.

Rojas, who will turn 37 in February, will hit the open market this offseason. Back in October, he announced plans to retire after the 2026 season and said he’d like to return to Los Angeles for one last dance. After his Game 7 heroics, how could the Dodgers consider bringing him back for another year?

Clayton Kershaw, SP

Kershaw won’t be back in 2026 because he’s finally hanging up the cleats.

Kershaw, one of the greatest pitchers of his generation, announced in September that he will retire after this season. What a way to go out—an 11–2 record and 3.36 ERA in his final season with a World Series title as the cherry on top. Across 18 seasons, all with the Dodgers, Kershaw registered a 223–96 record with a 2.53 ERA and 3,052 strikeouts.

Kiké Hernández, UT

On a roster full of superstars, Hernández has served as a utility player and culture-builder in Los Angeles for nine of his 12 seasons in the big leagues. Hernández batted .203/.255/.366 with 10 homers and 35 RBIs in 92 games last year, and he wasn’t any better in the playoffs, going 5-for-28 (.179) in the World Series.

As he hits free agency this offseason, Hernández might be the odd man out for 2026—especially if the Dodgers bring back Rojas for a utility role alongside Tommy Edman.

Andrew Heaney, RP

Los Angeles claimed Heaney after he was designated for assignment by the Pirates in late August. Heaney made just one appearance in a Dodgers uniform, allowing three earned runs in two innings. He was not a part of the Dodgers’ postseason roster, and at 34 years old, doesn’t seem like he’ll be back with the club next year.

Michael Kopech, RP

The Dodgers acquired Kopech at the 2024 trade deadline in the same move that landed them Edman. He’s been fantastic when healthy—1.54 ERA in 35 innings since the trade—but he hasn’t been healthy often. Kopech had two stints on the 60-day injured list this season alone and wasn’t healthy enough to crack the playoff roster.

Kirby Yates, RP

Yates struggled in his first year with the Dodgers, logging a 5.23 ERA in 41 1/3 innings. / Kirby Lee-Imagn Images

Yates was one of the top arms available in free agency last offseason, and he signed a one-year deal worth $13 million with the Dodgers in January. He was supposed to be a high-leverage option out of manager Dave Roberts’s bullpen, but instead, Yates was one of Los Angeles’s biggest problems.

In 50 appearances (41 1/3 innings), Yates allowed 24 earned runs on 38 hits and 17 walks—adding up to a 5.23 ERA and 1.331 WHIP. It was his worst full season of work since his third season in the big leagues in 2016. Yates, just like Kopech and Heaney, did not pitch in the Dodgers’ playoff run.

Afghanistan bring in Ghazanfar to strengthen spin department for Asia Cup

Top-order batter Ibrahim Zadran and allrounder Sharafuddin Ashraf have also been included

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Aug-2025Rashid Khan will lead a strong-looking Afghanistan side at the upcoming men’s T20 Asia Cup in the UAE, with Noor Ahmad, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, AM Ghazanfar and Mohammad Nabi completing a formidable spin-bowling attack along with their captain.Afghanistan, the second-best side from Asia at the last men’s T20 World Cup behind champions India, have not played a single T20I since the start of 2025 and no international cricket since the Champions Trophy in February. They have, in fact, played just three T20Is in the last 12 months, against Zimbabwe in Harare in December 2024, in a series they won 2-1. They will play a triangular T20I series in Sharjah against hosts UAE and Pakistan from Friday ahead of the Asia Cup.From the squad that made the Zimbabwe tour, top-order dasher Hazratullah Zazai and batting allrounder Zubaid Akbari have been dropped, while left-arm spinner Nangeyalia Kharote has been moved to the reserves. Coming in are top-order batter Ibrahim Zadran, allrounder Sharafuddin Ashraf and Ghazanfar, the mystery spinner who hasn’t made his T20I debut in his short career so far.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Ghazanfar has so far played 42 T20s since his debut in the format in April 2023. His ODI career – now 11 matches old – has been quite spectacular, though. At just 19, he has two five-wicket hauls already – the 6 for 26 against Bangladesh in Sharjah in November last year his best – and has been doing the rounds of the franchise T20 circuit, including at the IPL, the CPL, and the ILT20. He couldn’t make his IPL debut earlier this year though, as he picked up a back injury late last year on the tour of Zimbabwe, after being picked by Mumbai Indians for INR 4.80 crore (US$ 570,000 approx at the time).Related

Vinnie Pasquantino Wins Home Run Derby With Series of Hilarious Tweets

Kansas City Royals first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino is enjoying his All-Star break elsewhere, but he may have won the Home Run Derby night with an unbelievably funny sequence of posts on his X account as he watched with the rest of us.

The fourth-year first baseman got all his thoughts down on the internet and provided some colorful commentary as the drama unfolded at Truist Park in Atlanta.

Pittsburgh Pirates star Oneil Cruz put on a show in the first round, smashing 21 home runs including a 513-foot bomb. He smacked line drives so hard that the youth fielders shagging balls could only run to get out of the way. In case any fans questioned that incredibly savvy business decision, Pasquantino assured everyone that he feels the same way when playing against Cruz:

Later, he had a hilarious post about Seattle Mariners star catcher and Major League home-run leader Cal Raleigh putting on a show just like he has the whole season:

In case anyone thought he was serious—don't worry, it was just a joke:

He also made an incredibly honest admission when he noticed Paul Skenes with Spanish-speaking stars Elly De La Cruz, Ketel Marte and Fernando Tatís Jr.

He had some thoughts on Raleigh advancing on an extremely close longest home run tiebreak over Athletics slugger Brent Rooker:

He took to X a couple weeks ago to make a joke about being the batter for two of Shohei Ohtani's fastest pitches thrown, too. Never change, Vinnie. Never change.
