As well as Bayindir: Man Utd's "wet blanket" looks finished under Amorim

Losing has become an unwanted habit for Manchester United under Ruben Amorim. So much so that the 3-0 loss to Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday may not have surprised anyone.

The Red Devils have accrued a measly 31 points in 31 matches under the Portuguese head coach, the lowest of any non-relegated side in that time.

It should go without saying, but, it is not good enough for a club of Manchester United’s size with the ambitions that they should have in the Premier League.

Players are to blame as well as the manager, though, and one player who may not have much of a future at Old Trafford, as a frontline player anyway, is Altay Bayindir.

The Turkish shot-stopper was given the nod between the sticks for the Manchester derby, but it seemed to be more of a case of keeping Senne Lammens out of the firing line for a debut in such a big clash.

United swooped to sign the Belgian goalkeeper from Royal Antwerp on deadline day and his arrival at Old Trafford could spell the end of Altay’s short time as the number one.

Why Altay Bayindir may already be finished at Man Utd

The Turkey international has started all four of the club’s Premier League matches this season, per Sofascore, but has not done enough to suggest that he has what it takes to be the next Edwin Van Der Sar, David De Gea, or Peter Schmeichel.

Altay played four times in the top-flight in the 2024/25 campaign and only saved 44% of the shots on his goal, per Sofascore, and made one error that led to a goal.

The Turkish flop has not improved much at the start of the current season, unfortunately, as he has saved 53% of the shots against him in the Premier League and made one error that led to a goal.

As you can see in the clip above, the United goalkeeper was far too weak from a corner on the opening day against Arsenal, which allowed Riccardo Calafiori to score the winning goal for the away side.

This means that Altay, who was easily beaten by Phil Foden and Erling Haaland for the first two Man City goals on Sunday, has made two errors that have led to goals in just eight league starts for the club.

As you can see in the table above, Lammens has the shot-stopping potential to be a standout in the Premier League for the Red Devils if he can adjust to the division.

This means that the Belgian goalkeeper’s arrival at the club could spell the end of Altay’s career as a first-choice option for Amorim, as he settles in as the number one in the weeks to come.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The Turkey international may not be the only poor performer from the derby whose career at United under Amorim should be in danger, though, as Manuel Ugarte falls into the same bracket.

He was selected to start in the middle of the park over Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo, yet once again failed to deliver an impressive performance for the team.

Why Manuel Ugarte should be finished at Man Utd

The Uruguay international has been at Old Trafford for more than a year and looks no closer to establishing himself as a key player for the manager than when he first walked through the door under Erik ten Hag.

Ugarte’s performances in the Premier League for the Red Devils during the 2024/25 campaign left far too much to be desired, as the central midfielder struggled badly in possession.

As you can see in the table above, the former Paris Saint-Germain flop was among the worst central midfielders in the division in a host of possession-based metrics, which shows that he disrupted the team’s build-up with his lack of quality on the ball.

Despite being in the side to provide defensive stability, in theory, only Bruno Fernandes (1.4) was dribbled past more per game than Ugarte (1.3) for Manchester United in the Premier League last season, per WhoScored.

Opposition players found it far too easy to get the better of the central midfielder in the middle of the park, which means that he was a liability to the side in and out of possession last term.

Unfortunately, Ugarte’s performance in his first start of the league season against Manchester City on Sunday did not suggest that he is ready to turn things around.

Earlier this month, former Chelsea ace Craig Burley said: “Manuel Ugarte is just absolutely nothing. He’s just like a wet blanket. Put him in with the kids and even the kids would be going, ‘Who the hell is this guy?’ Seriously.”

Harsh comments from Burley but it is hard to disagree with him. Ugarte was caught out for the opening goal from Foden as he was too slow to get out to Doku and his weak block fell back for the winger to cross for the England international.

His lack of quality in possession also played a part in the third goal. The midfielder played a poor pass into Luke Shaw’s feet, which forced him to put Harry Maguire under pressure, resulting in the centre-back giving the ball away and Haaland being played through for his second.

He does not look up to the task of starting matches for Manchester United in the Premier League, as evidenced by his dismal showings last season and his poor performance on Sunday.

Worse than Sesko: Amorim must drop Man Utd flop who was "nowhere near it"

Manchester United should drop this flop who was even worse than Benjamin Sesko in the derby.

1 ByDan Emery Sep 14, 2025

The Uruguay international looks totally finished under Amorim on the evidence available so far, which is why Casemiro, Mason Mount, Mainoo, and Bruno Fernandes should play the bulk of the minutes available when fit and available ahead of him.

Wayne Rooney scores goal like Man Utd 2011 Champions League final in Seoul

Manchester United hero Wayne Rooney remains one of the deadliest strikers to have played at Old Trafford, and it appears that he hasn’t lost his ability to score stunning goals, even after his retirement.

Wayne Rooney scores blockbuster goal in Nexon Icons match

While the Premier League begins to heat up again after the conclusion of the international break, football fans on the other side of the world were able to take in a thrilling match-up of legends in Seoul on Sunday.

In the latest instalment of the Nexon Icons 2025 Series, FC Spear and Shield United went head-to-head for the Nexon trophy and plenty of the world’s best at their craft were on show in front of their adoring crowd.

Rooney led the line for FC Spear, followed up by a support act of epic proportion, including Didier Drogba, Thierry Henry, Kaka and Steven Gerrard, among other star-studded faces.

On the other side, Carles Puyol, Ashley Cole, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Iker Casillas were just some of the names on display, but former Manchester United star Rooney grabbed the headlines, even if his side went on to lose 2-1 courtesy of strikes from Maicon and Joo Ho Park.

As seen below, the Three Lions icon delivered a magnificent effort from outside the area to level the scoring, one that bore striking similarities to his strike in Manchester United’s 3-1 defeat against Barcelona in the 2011 Champions League final at Wembley.

Forever a legend at both Everton and Manchester United, he is enjoying life after his playing days and still has a God-given talent most footballers would kill to replicate. Now, it remains to be seen whether he dips his toe back into management.

Full transcript of line-ups from Nexon Icons match

Shield United: Young Kwang Kim, Iker Casillas, Alessandro Nesta, Michael Carrick, Marchisio, Gilberto Silva, Joo Ho Park, Sol Campbell, Claude Makelele, Ashley Cole, Maicon, John Arne Riise, Nemanja Vidic, Carles Puyol, Young Pyo Lee, Rio Ferdinand.

FC Spear: Bum Young Lee, Gianluigi Buffon, Ja Cheol Koo, Ki Hyon Seol, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Clarence Seedorf, Eden Hazard, Wayne Rooney, Gareth Bale, Kaka, Steven Gerrard, Ronaldinho, Thierry Henry, Ji Sung Park, Didier Drogba.

What next for Wayne Rooney in management?

On the management front, Rooney is without a club after leaving Plymouth Argyle in 2024 after a run of five wins, six draws and 14 losses in 25 matches across all competitions.

Previously, he has also enjoyed spells in charge of Derby County, DC United and Birmingham City, albeit the Manchester United hero has enjoyed varied degrees of success at all four clubs.

Wayne Rooney picks between Celtic and Rangers, wished he played for them

The former England striker wanted to head to Scotland during his career.

ByCharlie Smith Sep 11, 2025

Speaking to The Rest is Football earlier this year, Rooney admitted he would like to take on a new challenge in the dugout, but only if it comes in the right set of circumstances.

“I would like to go back in (to management). But it would have to be the right club. Certainly the right club. I think you always have that ego, don’t you? You always have that confidence you could go in and get the best out of a bad or difficult situation.”

Coaching vacancies will become available throughout the next few months, though some would suggest that Rooney putting his boots back would be an even better use of his time!

When Sarr can return to Crystal Palace training and most likely re-injury

Following the news that Ismaila Sarr has been forced to drop out of the Senegal squad through injury, it could be eight weeks before he returns to full Crystal Palace training.

Sarr more important than ever at Crystal Palace

Whilst Jean-Philippe Mateta has been destroying corner flags all around the Premier League, Sarr has quietly become an important player for Oliver Glasner and Crystal Palace. Alongside the star striker, Sarr has proved to be an excellent addition and, after a slow start last season, found his stride and hasn’t looked back since.

Oliver Glasner no longer has Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise to call on. The former joined Arsenal this summer in a dream move and the latter has, of course, been starring at Bayern Munich since leaving last year. So, naturally, the responsibility has fallen the way of the likes of Sarr to step up alongside Mateta, especially as new signing Yeremy Pino settles in.

You wouldn’t know that there’s any extra pressure on the former Watford winger, however. He has stepped up with ease, scoring twice in three Premier League games to follow up his effort in the Community Shield victory against Liverpool.

Glasner is well aware of his quality too, having told reporters last season: “He’s different. We knew that we couldn’t replace Michael one-for-one, because he’s got his own profile and his own qualities.

Oliver Glasner lifts the FA Cup.

“Ismaila is more of a direct runner with a lot of pace. We knew if we get him into the right areas in the right moment he will get chances to score goals.”

The manager’s earlier praise will only make the news of Sarr’s injury all the more frustrating and Chat GPT has now delivered a damning verdict as to when Palace fans can expect their winger to return.

When Sarr could make Crystal Palace return

Amid reports that he has suffered a grade two hamstring tear, the AI tool revealed that Sarr is likely to make his Crystal Palace return in four to eight weeks. In the best case scenario, the severity of the grade two injury will not be disastrous enough to rule him out for two months, but Sarr’s explosive sprinting may well mean that Palace take their time with this one.

Indeed, Sarr can only return to training after such an injury when several recovery factors have been ticked off. Palace must ensure that full strength and flexibility has returned to his hamstring, there’s no altered running gait or imbalance and that he is able to participate in full training, which could take six to eight weeks.

They must also consider the re-injury risk. According to AI, this is at its highest in the first two months after recovery and can be reduced by Nordic hamstring/ exercises.

Ismaila Sarr

If Sarr misses just one month of action, then he is likely to be sidelined for games against Sunderland, Crystal Palace and Liverpool before potentially returning against Dynamo Kyiv in the Europa Conference League.

Meanwhile, a two-month absence will see him miss that Europa Conference League tie as well as games against Everton, Bournemouth, AEK Larnaca, Arsenal and Brentford.

Eric Garcia confirms Barcelona contract extension talks to quell fears of free transfer

Eric Garcia confirmed he’s in talks with Barcelona over a contract renewal while hinting he could be a future captain at the Spanish club.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Garcia’s current contract with Barcelona expires in June 2026, which could leave him free to negotiate a move next season. To avoid that scenario, the club have already opened discussions to secure his future with an extension running until 2029. In a recent interview, Garcia confirmed the talks, revealing that Barcelona officials have initiated negotiations with his agent to finalise a long-term deal.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Barcelona brought in Garcia on a free transfer from Manchester City in 2021 after his contract expired. He spent two seasons at Camp Nou before moving on loan to Girona, seeking more game time after falling out of favour under then-coach Xavi. The defender also wanted regular minutes to stay sharp for the 2024 Paris Olympics. On his return to Barcelona, Garcia’s versatility quickly impressed new coach Hansi Flick. The German tactician deployed him in multiple roles, including at right-back to provide cover for the injured Jules Kounde.

  • WHAT GARCIA SAID

Speaking about the renewal, Garcia said: “Everything will be discussed soon. We've started talking about a renewal.”

When asked about potential captaincy in the future he said: “Captain? Who knows if I could be a candidate for captaincy in the future.”

Bassey 2.0: Rangers lining up deal for "strong and powerful" £3.4m star

Glasgow Rangers manager Russell Martin has confirmed that the club are looking to bring in more signings before the end of the summer transfer window.

The likes of Nasser Djiga, Thelo Aasgaard, Joe Rothwell, Oliver Antman, and Djeidi Gassama, among others, have already arrived at Ibrox, but the former Scotland international wants more.

This means that Gers supporters still have plenty to look forward to before September’s deadline, as the Light Blues look to build a squad that is capable of competing for the Scottish Premiership title.

One area that the Scottish giants are looking to add more quality to is centre-back, despite having already brought in Emmanuel Fernandez and Djiga this summer.

Rangers lining up move for new defender

A fresh report has emerged linking the Light Blues with a move for a new left-sided defensive option, who could come in as Martin’s own version of Russell Martin.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

According to RangersReview journalist Chris Jack, Rangers are lining up a move to sign Real Betis central defender Nobel Mendy this summer.

The reporter claims, however, that a deal is not ‘imminent’ for the left-footed titan, which suggests that the Gers are not close to bringing him to Ibrox, despite the club’s interest in snapping the youngster up to bolster their defensive ranks.

It was reported earlier this month that Real Betis are looking for a fee in the region of £3.4m for the 20-year-old talent, and it remains to be seen if the Light Blues are willing to meet the asking price.

What Nobel Mendy could bring to Rangers

The Real Betis defender could be a shrewd addition to the squad to fill a hole in the squad, as Rangers will not have a left-footed centre-back in the squad if Ben Davies and Clinton Nsiala, who have not been involved in the games so far, leave.

Calvin Bassey

Ridvan Yilmaz moving on would also leave Jefte as the only left-footed left-back option in the group, which means that a left-footed defender who can play left-back and centre-back would be perfect.

Bassey fulfilled that role perfectly for Rangers during his time at the club. The Gers swooped to sign him from Leicester City as a youngster, and he really made his breakthrough under Giovanni van Bronckhorst in the 2021/22 campaign, playing at left-back and centre-back almost alternatively.

Mendy, who was hailed as “strong and powerful” by writer Kai Watson, is a left-footed centre-back who can also play as a left-back, according to Transfermarkt.

This suggests that the 6 foot 2 colossus has the potential to be Bassey 2.0 for the Gers as another powerful, young, and versatile left-footed talent who can cover at left-back and centre-back when needed.

Rangers managerRussellMartinapplauds fans after the match

He has only played six matches at senior level for Real Betis, winning 100% of his duels in two LaLiga games last term, and that makes it difficult to gauge where the youngster is at from a quality perspective.

However, Rangers must see something in him if they are interested in bringing the defender to Ibrox for a potential fee of £3.4m, so their scouting work must have identified his quality in his academy performances in Spain.

Imagine him & Gassama: Rangers made approach for "hugely underrated" star

Rangers reportedly made an approach to sign a wing wizard who could be exciting alongside Djeidi Gassama.

ByDan Emery Aug 6, 2025

Therefore, Mendy could arrive at Ibrox with the potential to be Bassey 2.0 for the club as another young and versatile star who could cover two positions, which would prevent the Gers from having to sign two separate players to fill those gaps in the squad.

Man Utd and INEOS now want £60m+ deal to sign Palmer-like star after Sesko

Manchester United are working on a proposal that could reach £60m+ to sign a Cole Palmer-like star after Benjamin Sesko.

Leipzig star Sesko chooses Man Utd move over Newcastle

The towering RB Leipzig striker has chosen to join Man Utd over Premier League rivals Newcastle United and looks set to become INEOS’ most expensive addition of the summer.

Sesko has agreed to a five-year deal at Old Trafford, with United’s opening offer to the Bundesliga side being worth just under £74m.

A proposed move to Manchester has raised some concerns from Sir Alex Ferguson’s former assistant Rene Meulensteen, who drew comparisons to Rasmus Hojlund.

“If he scores in the first three or four games and hits the ground running then he could be the answer for the club, but there’s a chance that won’t happen.

“If you look at Hojlund, he joined Atalanta and performed well alongside the rest of the team and then joined United. The same can be said for Sesko – the Bundesliga is a very different league to the Premier League, so he’ll need to adapt.

“Has Sesko got potential? 100%, but he’s still young and developing and he isn’t the finished article.”

AI predicts how many goals and assists Cunha and Mbeumo will get for Man Utd in 2025/26

The pair have been backed to star at Old Trafford.

ByCharlie Smith Jul 22, 2025

Sesko, Cunha and Mbeumo may well be Amorim’s first-choice front three for the opening day clash with Arsenal at Old Trafford, but by the looks of it, INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe aren’t stopping with the Slovenia international.

Man Utd and INEOS going all out for £60m+ Fermin Lopez

According to a report from Spain, Man Utd are now ‘going all out’ to sign Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez. It is claimed that those on the board at Old Trafford are ‘working on a proposal’ that could hit €70m (£60.1m).

However, it is added that Barcelona ‘doesn’t want to lose one of the most promising players to emerge from its youth system in recent years’, but may need to raise funds through player sales.

Therefore, Man Utd are ‘confident that their sporting project and the possibility of offering him a leading role will entice’ Lopez.

At the age of 22, Lopez is going from strength to strength with the Catalan giants and is now valued at a career-high €50m by Transfermarkt.

Capable of playing as a central midfielder, attacking midfielder or left-winger, Lopez is under contract at the Nou Camp until 2029. In total, the Spain international has made 88 senior appearances for Barcelona, scoring 19 goals and providing 11 assists during that time.

Meanwhile, Rio Ferdinand has also been impressed with what he’s seen from Lopez, comparing the Barca man to Chelsea star Cole Palmer.

Everton agree deal to sign "top" international who has 3 wins vs Toffees

Everton have now reached an agreement over the signing of a “top” international player this summer, according to a positive claim from journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Who are Everton being linked with signing?

Blues transfer rumours continue to come thick and fast, with Bayer Munich midfielder Joao Palhinha mentioned as a potential option ahead of the return of the Premier League next month.

The 30-year-old’s spell in Germany hasn’t worked out, but he showed what a dominant force he could be in a Fulham shirt, making more tackles than any other player in both the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons.

Bayern Munich's Joao Palhinha in action against Bayer Leverksen.

Everton are also believed to have made their first approach to sign Aston Villa ace John McGinn, with the Scotland international capable of bringing experience, quality and a winning mentality to David Moyes’ squad. However, the Toffees’ enquiry was rejected by those at Villa Park.

Meanwhile, both Omari Hutchinson and James McAtee have been linked with the Blues, too, fresh off the back of their triumphant European Championship campaign with England’s Under-21s.

Everton reach agreement to sign "top" international

According to a key update from O’Rourke on X, Everton have now reached an agreement over the signing Bournemouth goalkeeper Mark Travers this summer.

While Travers may not necessarily be a game-changing signing for the Blues ahead of next season, he feels like a shrewd addition who can provide competition for Jordan Pickford.

The four-cap Republic of Ireland international was limited to only five Premier League appearances last season, highlighting why a new challenge is likely to appeal to him, potentially at Everton.

Travers is a steady pair of hands who could fill in when needed for the Blues – he has beaten Everton three times before – with Scott Parker his team ethic during his spell in charge of the Cherries earlier in the ‘keeper’s career.

“You looked at times thinking, ‘is he ready for this?’ But we stuck with him. And more importantly, Mark Travers has worked tirelessly. He took the bumps along the way and improved drastically. It’s a sign of a top keeper that in big moments makes big saves. Saves you think, ‘wow he should not have saved that. Over the past three or four months, Travs is coming into the realms of making big saves at big moments. That’s happened over the course of the season.”

Better signing than McGinn: Everton holding talks over "world-class" star

David Moyes is looking to sign a midfielder or two this summer at Everton

ByRoss Kilvington Jul 11, 2025

It remains to be seen what the fee for Travers’ services will be for Everton, but he should arrive for a relatively cheap amount in the modern game, allowing plenty of funds to still be available for players seen as key starters before the window slams shut at the end of next month.

T20 World Cup puts squeeze on WBBL overseas stars

The fixtures for the tenth season of the WBBL have been announced with the Gabba added to the stadium series

Andrew McGlashan08-Jul-2024

Adelaide Strikers will open the tenth season of the WBBL as they aim for a hat-trick of titles•Getty Images

The WBBL faces a potential squeeze on overseas player availability with the tenth season of the tournament starting just seven days after the T20 World Cup finishes in Bangladesh, but the reduced length of the competition will see a higher proportion of games in the evenings at primetime with greater use of technology.Nominations are currently open for the overseas draft which is expected to take place in early September – some clubs have already taken advantage of the new option to sign a player on a multi-year deal before the draft – and CA remains confident it will have a strong hand of overseas names, but the increasingly busy schedule may yet see some top stars consider their options.England’s Nat Sciver-Brunt, who made a late entry into last season’s competition with Perth Scorchers, told the BBC she won’t be making herself available this year. The WBBL has been trimmed to a 40-game regular season with three finals in a bid to manage the workload of the game’s leading players, but this season it has faced schedule pressure at both ends. Australia and India start a three-match ODI series four days after the final on December 1 while England face South Africa from November 24 which overlaps with the finals although Marizanne Kapp and Nadine de Klerk have committed to full seasons with Melbourne Stars and Brisbane Heat.”Clubs are working really hard in the market at the moment with players and agents,” Alistair Dobson, the head of the BBL, told ESPNcricinfo as the WBBL fixture list was unveiled. “Obviously the calendar for players in the women’s game is really busy at that time of the year, particularly this year.”We are excited about the players who have signed and think over the next month or two we’ll get a sense from players as to how they are preparing for the World Cup and their appetite to come quickly to Australia, whether that’s at the start of our competition, or perhaps a couple of games in which is certainly possible as well. We know the competition is still one of, if not the, most appealing for players around the world and we are expecting big names to be there again.”Gabba joins stadium seriesThe tournament’s stadium series has been expanded and brought forward as Cricket Australia looks to replicate the crowd growth experienced in the WPL and the Hundred.A standalone match will be played at the Gabba for the first time – the WBBL was last played there in 2019 as part of a double-header with the BBL – while there will again be two games at the MCG and SCG. Adelaide Oval will also stage its third game of the season having hosted an opening-day double-header on October 27, which includes defending champions Adelaide Strikers launching the tournament with a rematch of last year’s final against Brisbane Heat.Ellyse Perry starred at the SCG last season•Getty Images

The WBBL returned to major stadiums last season and the final at Adelaide Oval saw 12,379 attend although crowd growth still lags behind what has been achieved in England and India. The stadium series fixtures will include a Sydney derby between Sixers and Thunder on November 10 and a Melbourne head-to-head between Stars and Renegades on November 15.”The introduction of the stadium series to the WBBL last year was a great success,” Dobson said. “Think it showed when we put the best cricket league in the world for women in the best cricket stadiums in the world we get a great product. The crowds loved it, the players loved it and our broadcasters loved it.”We took a lot from that, we’ve added a big game at the Gabba; Brisbane Heat at the Gabba is iconic. We’ve brought them a week or so earlier than last year which means the games are even more likely to be live and the way we promote those games will be a big focus for us.”The final three days of the regular season will overlap with the Australia-India Test in Perth, including a game at the WACA immediately after the second day’s play at nearby Optus Stadium. CA sees this as an opportunity to cross-promote and feed off the audience of the Test. The reduced length of the competition also means significantly fewer games in the tougher-to-sell weekday afternoon timeslot.Third umpire at every gameThe inconsistent availability of TV umpires was in the spotlight last season with several incorrect decisions that were visible to viewers but not able to be checked on the field. With the reduction in matches there will be an enhancement in the broadcast facilities with a third umpire in operation at every game for line calls such as run-outs and stumpings. ESPNcricinfo understands that there will also be an increase in matches with the DRS available although it won’t cover every fixture.Full WBBL 2024-25 fixture listOctober 27: Adelaide Strikersvs Brisbane Heat, Adelaide Oval (1.10pm)
