Liverpool keen on "incredible" £100m star who silenced Anfield last season

With Liverpool's summer transfer window bursting into life, the Reds are now reportedly keen on signing a midfielder who starred in a shock victory at Anfield last season.

Liverpool transfer news

For a moment, it looked as though Liverpool were going to make it through the entirety of the summer transfer window without a reinforcement. Things have changed this week, however, with Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi emerging as a target for those at Anfield. Pushing on for the Spaniard's signature, Arne Slot could yet get the missing piece that his midfield is crying out for.

In a deal that could see Liverpool trigger Zubimendi's hefty €60m (£52m) release clause, the Reds may well open their summer spending in style. But that doesn't mean that the 25-year-old will be the only name through the door. Recent rumours suggest that those at Anfield could yet turn to further reinforcements before the end of the month.

Names such as Anthony Gordon have been mentioned once again after he initially stole the headlines earlier this summer, and now a fellow England international has been linked with a move to Merseyside.

According to Rudy Galetti for TeamTalk, Liverpool are now keen on signing Adam Wharton from Crystal Palace alongside interest from Manchester United, after the midfielder impressed in the second-half of last season at Crystal Palace.

Wharton only arrived at Selhurst Park in January but has since enjoyed an upward trajectory to earn such links in the space of just seven months, with his club believing he should now be valued higher than the likes of Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo at £100m+.

Of course, Liverpool fans will be well aware of his quality, having witnessed it first-hand in Palace's shock 1-0 victory over the Reds at Anfield last season, in which Wharton dominated.

By the end of the shock result, Wharton had won eight out of ten duels, made six tackles and created one chance in an all-action display highlighted.

"Incredible" Wharton would be perfect Zubimendi partner

With Slot's system using a double pivot at the base of his midfield, signing both Wharton and Zubimendi could be an act of genius by Liverpool if they can afford it. The duo, on paper, would provide the perfect balance, handing Slot a midfield destroyer and someone who can conduct things from the heart of his side. Meanwhile, both players are excellent ball progressers.

Unsurprisingly, the England international has earned high praise from those at Selhurst Park, with Eberechi Eze saying via BBC Sport: "He's an incredible player to play with. Playing with him at Palace, I've got used to seeing the way he plays and understanding him. He's very calm, composed, and a joy to play with. For someone so young, he's very mature and very wise.

"When you speak to him, it feels like you're speaking to someone older than you, that's the type of person he is. He's an incredible player."

With that in mind, Amorim cannot begin work in Manchester on his intended start date. Until clearance has been received, the 39-year-old will be unable to oversee official duties – including training sessions with the squad that he has inherited.

Amorim does, however, have time on his side as another international break has been reached. His first game in charge of United will not be taken in until the Red Devils pay a visit to Premier League new boys Ipswich on November 24, although he will certainly want to get his feet under the desk well before that date.

Amorim, who won his final game as Sporting boss 4-2 and was treated to an emotional farewell by players and fans, has said of the challenge that he is taking on: “I feel ready for the new challenge. I’m not naive, I know it’s going to be very different, very difficult. I’m at peace now, I can focus on my new job and I’m looking forward to starting. I know it will be difficult to reproduce what I have here anywhere else, but there are other places with different exposure and pressure.”

Ajinkya Rahane century headlines dominant day for India

His unbeaten 104-run sixth-wicket stand with Ravindra Jadeja gives India the advantage after two days

Andrew McGlashan26-Dec-2020A century of the highest calibre by Ajinkya Rahane put India in control of the second Test after it appeared Australia would bowl themselves back into contention. Instead, with the help of a string of middle-order allies, chiefly the recalled Ravindra Jadeja in an unbroken stand of 104, Rahane lifted his team to an advantage of 82.Australia started the day well – Pat Cummins producing a magnificent eight-over spell that removed both overnight batsmen, Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara, and included barely a delivery off line – but tailed off during the final session which included shipping 45 runs in 11.3 overs of the second new ball. Rain brought a slightly early finish, what ended up being the final delivery of the day bringing Rahane his third life when he fended a short ball to point against an increasingly frustrated Mitchell Starc but the chance burst out of Travis Head’s hands as he hit the turf.Ajinkya Rahane takes a moment after a hard-fought century•Getty Images

They had two other opportunities to remove Rahane – one a miss and the other a drop. On 57, he edged Starc between Tim Paine and the lone slip Steven Smith moments after the off-side field had been strengthened at the expense of the cordon. Then, on 73, in the first over with the second new ball a chance went to hand, Rahane jabbing at a full, wide delivery from Starc, but Smith was late to react above his head at second slip. By the end of the day, Australia were ragged and in need of regrouping.Rahane needed treatment for what appeared a back problem twice during the afternoon session (and later for blows on the hand and neck) but it did not disrupt his almost zen-like progression at the crease. His 12th Test century, and second at the MCG, came up from 195 balls with a fierce square cut against Cummins, a hallmark of an innings where his strokeplay flourished when he wanted it to. Rarely did he miss the chance to score amid over after over of keeping out the good balls, the softness of his hands ensuring when the edge was found it usually went to ground. His most prolific scoring area with 20 runs was third man.India managed just 54 runs in the first session and Australia will have come away feeling they could have had more than two wickets. Cummins was magnificent – he beat Pujara with the first delivery of the day, close to enough for Paine to burn a review – and Josh Hazlewood could have had Gill in the second over when Paine was unable to hold an inside edge diving to his left.Cummins eventually lured Gill into an expansive drive to end a promising maiden Test innings and in his next over claimed the huge prize of Pujara, although this one owed everything to Australia’s captain as he flung himself in front of first slip to hold a low chance that would not have carried. That was, however, to prove the exception in the fielding effort. At the time, Australia’s 195 was looking considerable and Cummins was rested with a spell that read 8-4-12-2.India, with Rahane absorbing a lot of pressure, did very well to take the sting out of the session, whittling the deficit down well inside three figures before Nathan Lyon, who found considerable turn on occasions to suggest a fourth-innings run chase will be a demanding prospect, removed Hanuma Vihari with a gloved sweep.Up to this point, Australia had controlled the run rate so despite a small first-innings total they always had a little bit of breathing space. That changed with the arrival of Rishabh Pant who brought impetus and quickly skipped to 24 at a run-a-ball with some measured, selective strokeplay. It appeared to help free up Rahane, too, although that was also the reward for his hours of earlier hard work.Pant was cut off by Starc, bringing up his 250th Test wicket, when he edged a cut with India still behind and Australia hopeful of something close to parity, but that door was slammed shut. Jadeja, effectively brought in as Virat Kohli’s replacement, played a central role with an innings of maturity and patience. By the close, when he had faced 104 deliveries, he had struck just one boundary – a neat back-foot punch off Cameron Green. He showed a defence to match Rahane’s and resisted trying to take on Lyon.As the wind suddenly swirled around the MCG, Starc got a delivery to climb at Rahane but it was the India captain’s day. He was getting treatment from the physio when, in what was perfect timing for India, the rain arrived and the umpires called play off. Few deserved the comfort of the dressing room more than Rahane. A chance to take stock and resume tomorrow. However, he may already have defined this game.

Aston Villa racing to sign £49m star who could become their own Gordon

As Aston Villa prepare for the 2024/25 campaign, Unai Emery knows that his job has barely started.

Sure, Villa Park deserves to revel in the knowledge that it has risen to heights uncharted for many, many years in the Midlands, enjoying a season competing in the Conference League and now returning to Europe's elite club competition after so many interminable years away, finishing fourth in the Premier League.

But the efforts of the past few years must now be used as a launchpad for reaching illustrious levels. Villa has risen from the rubble and it has risen through Emery's design, the Spaniard transforming a struggling outfit, gleaning its latent quality and moulding it into something tangible, something uniform and positive.

Unai Emery

While PSR has dominated the early stage of Villa's transfer window, Monchi and Co deserve a lot of credit for sealing some shrewd early deals to strengthen, albeit sacrificing Douglas Luiz and a couple of homegrown talents to stay on the right side of the financial scales.

But now, the Villans are set to bolster with a big deal or two, with sights set on succeeding both in the Premier League and Champions League.

Aston Villa chasing Euro 2024 star

According to Football Insider, Aston Villa are tussling with top-flight rivals Tottenham Hotspur for the signing of Nico Williams, who has been in first-class form with Spain at Euro 2024.

Villa are long-term admirers and failed with an approach for the Athletic Bilbao winger back in January 2023, having been rejected despite meeting his release clause.

Now, though, things are different. The 21-year-old's stock has risen considerably and he has a host of top European suitors – including Barcelona – on his trail. With a £49m release clause in his contract, this could be an opportune time to strike – and Emery's outfit have already put in plenty of groundwork.

Nico Williams' style of play

Pace, and barrels of it. Williams is principally a left-sided winger who "terrorised defences" with his physicality and sharp athletic skills, as has been noted by analyst Ben Mattinson.

He's risen to continental prominence for his performances for Spain at the European Championships, with the table above underscoring quite how remarkable his level has been over these past several weeks, but Williams has earned his place after a season of impressive skills in Basque Country.

Indeed, Bilbao ended a 40-year wait for silverware last season as they defeated Mallorca on penalties in the Copa del Rey final, with Williams particularly destructive throughout that cup campaign, posting three goals and five assists across six fixtures.

Athletic Bilbao forward Nico Williams.

That, however, is just a glimpse into Williams' overall seasonal tally, having actually scored eight goals across all competitions and, more importantly, racked up an incredible 19 assists to mark him as one of Europe's very best wide playmakers.

His performances have led FBref to list Newcastle United's Anthony Gordon as one of the 21-year-old's most comparable players.

The Magpies' Player of the Season has been highly sought-after in recent weeks, as has Williams, and while the England international has some exciting qualities, Williams might just trump him in the years to come.

Why Villa are interested in Nico Williams

Athletic Bilbao's unique transfer policy that precludes signings from beyond Basque Country has led to heightened salaries for many of the club's top talents.

Williams, perhaps the cream of the crop, is behind only his brother, Inaki, in the salary charts, taking home a pretty penny at £169k per week. Such earnings, admittedly, already see the Spaniard pocket more than Villa's highest earners, and thus an exception to the structure would need to be made.

But Villa have been concerted in their efforts to sign the fleet-footed star, shown tenacity in their long-term pursuit. Now, there's a real sense that Monchi will pounce on the opportunity to sign the player, with his talents simply irresistible.

As per FBref, Williams ranks among the top 2% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 20% for shot-creating actions, the top 7% for progressive carries and the top 6% for successful take-ons per 90.

It's no wonder that he's been labelled a "pace demon" by Arsenal podcaster Adam Keys, dribbling at a notably frequent rate and bringing the different facets of the wide game together to suggest that he has the trappings of a world-calibre sensation.

While the stats show that Gordon has been more creative over the past year, in his division, Wiliams is more progressive and actually racked up more assists, speaking of his incisive nature. Moreover, let's not forget that the £169k-per-week talent maintained his assist tally over various competitions, nearly hitting the 20 mark.

It's also worth noting that Gordon is two years Williams' senior and that the Bilbao wideman will be expected to go from strength to strength over the next few years. If his international escapades are anything to go by, there's no question that Williams will be performing at an obscene level in the near future.

Both left wingers are coveted on the market right now and it's clear to see why, but if Villa were to secure Williams' services, they might just land a prodigious talent destined for stardom.

ECB clarifies player retention plans for postponed Hundred

Window for negotiation opened ahead of mini-draft ahead of postponed maiden season

Players for the eight teams in The Hundred following the draft•Getty Images

Teams in the Hundred will be able to retain as many men’s players as they wish for the 2021 competition, as details for next season’s draft were revealed on Thursday. The Hundred, the ECB’s new flagship 100-ball competition, was due to be staged for the first time this summer before the Covid-19 pandemic caused its postponement to 2021. The competition’s regulations had initially allowed teams to retain up to 10 players at a mutually agreed salary band for the second season, but that has been extended to the full squad on account of the delay. In practice, teams are unlikely to retain their entire squads due to a number of factors, including the end of Kolpak status, a lack of clarity over the international calendar, and form over the last 12 months.ALSO READ: Women’s Hundred players given option for contract roll-overThe ECB is due to release a list of centrally-contracted players for 2020-21 – likely to be within the next two weeks – at which point teams will be able to negotiate to retain a player at a mutually-agreed salary. That could be higher or lower than their salary last year, meaning that Dawid Malan (a £40,000 pick by Trent Rockets) could negotiate up after an impressive 12 months, while a player who had struggled for form could agree a deal worth less. As revealed by ESPNcricinfo, all salary bands have been cut by 20% from last year.Teams will have from October through to January in which to negotiate with players and agents, with a mini-draft to follow at some point in early 2021. In that draft, each team will then have a ‘right to match’ option, allowing them to retain players with whom they failed to negotiate a deal, if they have a spot remaining in the draft at the salary band at which another team picks him. Each team will still be able to pick one ‘wildcard’ player, who will be chosen after the T20 Blast season in 2021 and will sign a £24,000 contract for the competition. The early stages of retention will depend on England’s red-ball central contract list, with the competition again set to overlap with a Test series, this time against India, and their Hundred deals falling outside of the main draft system. It is unlikely that many of the 10 players currently with deals will fall off the list, with Jonny Bairstow the main exception, but a handful of players – Dom Sibley, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope and Dom Bess – will come under consideration for red-ball contracts.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Players with red-ball central contracts both years will be able to be retained. Ultimately, each team will have at least one, and at most two players with a red-ball central contract, which will be confirmed in October.A spokesman for the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) said: “The PCA was supportive of the process in confirming the retention details for the 2021 Men’s Hundred.”The players were consulted through PCA representatives, including those who were not originally contracted for the 2020 Hundred. The PCA Players’ Committee fed back their approval of the process to the ECB which allows players an element of control and freedom to negotiate for 2021 while offering opportunities for those who impressed during the 2020 Vitality Blast.”There will be several sub-plots regarding retentions, not least questions over the availability of certain players on Kolpak deals. Dane Vilas, for example, was signed by Manchester Originals as a top-price pick in last year’s draft. He hopes to continue playing as a local via a UK ancestral visa next year, but would be less likely to command a top salary if competing for one of three overseas spots. Cameron Delport, signed by Birmingham Phoenix, is in the same position. The process for women’s retentions has already been confirmed, with players given more control in that they are able to choose to roll their contracts over at the same salary if they choose to do so.

Everton make first move for "beast" who’s never lost at Goodison Park

Despite continued financial problems and concerns over whether they will get their takeover across the line this summer, Everton have made their first move to sign a potential replacement for Jarrad Branthwaite.

Everton transfer news

It could be a long summer for those at Goodison Park, who may be left with no choice but to sell star players if Farhad Moshiri fails to find a successful buyer for the club. As things stand, 777 Partners seems unlikely to receive Premier League approval, with their portfolio of clubs beginning to fall apart as of late.

Club now plotting third Everton exit blow alongside Branthwaite and Onana

More frustrating news for Sean Dyche.

ByTom Cunningham May 23, 2024

Without a takeover, the most likely players to leave Everton seem to be Amadou Onana and Jarrad Branthwaite, with both star men linked with moves away to top clubs this summer. Branthwaite, in particular, has impressed this season to earn a place in England's provisional Euros squad and links to the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and even Real Madrid.

Whilst his sale would ease Everton's financial concerns, it would also deal Sean Dyche's squad a huge blow and in desperate need of a replacement before the start of next season. And that's where Davinson Sanchez could come in.

According to Sabah in Turkey, Everton have made an approach to sign Sanchez from Galatasaray this summer in an attempt to bring the former Tottenham defender back to the Premier League just one year after he left North London.

A player with plenty of experience, especially in England, he still has plenty to offer at the top level at just 27 years old. Having rediscovered his best form in Turkey too, Everton could be striking at the perfect time. Replacing Branthwaite will be no easy task, but if the Toffees can find the right price for Sanchez and secure his signature, then they may be able to tick that off their list of priorities.

"Beast" Sanchez can become unexpected key man

When Sanchez swapped England for Turkey last summer, not many would have had a potential move to Everton on the cards just one year later, but here the Colombian is, ready to fill their Branthwaite void should the youngster leave this summer. What's more, given that he's been a Champions League defender at his best, a move for Sanchez may well prove to be wise business on Merseyside.

Everton know all about the £87k-a-week defender's quality too, given that he's never lost in 90 minutes at Goodison Park and he's only ever lost against the Toffees once in eight games throughout his career.

Sanchez also earned the praise of former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, with the Argentine saying via Four Four Two: "It was a very competitive game after playing on Monday. We nearly changed all the players and of course it's important, after only 48 hours, to say [well done] to Davinson Sanchez because his effort on Monday and [Wednesday] was massive. He showed great mentality. He's a beast."

England to wear Black Lives Matter logo on shirts for West Indies Tests

England have announced that their shirts for the upcoming three-Test series against West Indies will feature the Black Lives Matter logo. The move mirrors that already taken by West Indies in asking to use the design by Alisha Hosannah, partner of Premier League footballer Troy Deeney. The decision was taken by the ECB, fully supported by the England players led by Joe Root, the Test captain, and Ben Stokes, who will stand in for him during the first Test at the Ageas Bowl, starting July 8.”It is important to show solidarity to the black community and to raise much needed awareness around the topics of equality and justice,” said Root. “The England players and management are unified in this approach and will use the platform of international cricket to fully support the objective of eradicating racial prejudice wherever it exists.”The majority of us do not understand what individuals from BAME background have to go through when people make judgments because of the colour of their skin. As a group, we are learning about this and educating ourselves.”There has to be equal opportunity and equal rights for all. We hope by making this stance we can play our part in standing shoulder-to-shoulder as a team and we hope that by continuing to raise awareness we can move towards a society in which the colour of your skin and your background has no bearing on your opportunities.”It is very simple, we believe there is no room for racism or any form of discrimination, anywhere.”Tom Harrison, the ECB chief executive, added: “The England and Wales Cricket Board fully support the message that Black Lives Matter, It has become a message of solidarity and a drive for progress and societal change. There can be no place for racism in society or our sport, and we must do more to tackle it.ALSO READ: West Indies to wear Black Lives Matter logo during Tests“Our support of that message is not an endorsement, tacit or otherwise, of any political organisation, nor the backing of any group that calls for violence or condones illegal activity. We are aware of certain aspects of the movement that promote their own political views, and their actions are not supported in any way by the ECB and our players.”This moment is about unity. We are proud that our players will stand alongside those from the West Indies and wear a logo that embodies that philosophy. It is fitting that they do so in solidarity with athletes from the football world who wore it first. Our thanks go to Troy Deeney and his partner Alisha Hosannah, creator of the logo, who generously agreed to share it with us.”We have a responsibility to ensure that cricket is truly a game for everyone. We will shortly set out further steps that build on the work we have already done to make cricket more inclusive and diverse in order to address some of the barriers which still exist for some communities.”Deeney added: “Alisha and I are immensely proud to be asked and take part in a monumental moment in world sport, this amazing decision by the England and West Indies cricket teams to show their support for Black Lives Matter.”When I got the call, I didn’t hesitate to respond, because I know as sportspersons in the spotlight, how important our efforts are to bring about change and the role we play in moving towards change in our society. Watching cricket with my grandad shaped my childhood, so it’s great to be able to help England and West Indies Cricket to show their support in such a meaningful way.”
