Everton’s "Solid" £28k-p/w Star Set To Miss Bournemouth Game

Everton defender Nathan Patterson is likely to be ruled out of the Premier League game against Bournemouth on Sunday, according to reports.

What's the latest injury news on Nathan Patterson?

The Toffees netted a stoppage-time winner to rescue a late draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend, so heading into the final fixture of the season in three days' time, Sean Dyche and his side find themselves in 17th place just two points above the relegation zone, meaning that if they secure a victory, they will successfully avoid the drop.

The Goodison Park outfit, however, have some big injury concerns coming into that game, including 21-year-old Patterson, who pulled up with a hamstring problem during their previous outing and had to be replaced by Michael Keane after just 29 minutes – and unfortunately for the boss, it sounds like he won’t have the right-back at his disposal for the decider on Sunday.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Patterson is "expected to miss out" the visit of Bournemouth this weekend, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin also a "growing" concern after being forced off the pitch with a hamstring injury of his own against Wolves. The Rangers academy graduate is "set to be absent" for potentially the most important showdown of the campaign after undergoing a further assessment to discover the true extent of his issue.

Nathan Patterson of Everton

Will Patterson's absence be a blow for Everton?

Everton will know that Patterson isn’t the strongest of players in an attacking sense having recorded zero goals or assists this season, but the “solid” defender's absence will definitely be a blow for Dyche.

The Scotland international, who pockets £28k per week, ranks highly amongst his positional peers over the past year, placing in the 98th percentile for tackles, the 95th percentile for blocks and in the 94th percentile for clearances, as per FBref.

The Glasgow native also provides the boss with some versatility having operated slightly higher up on the right side of the midfield as well as in his usual role at the back since the start of the term, but that is yet another attribute that will be missing this coming weekend.

Whatever happens to Everton on Sunday, Patterson will understandably be gutted not to have been able to play any part in helping his side secure their fate, so all he can focus on now is his recovery and preparation in a bid to return to action for the start of pre-season.

£55k-p/w ‘Monster’ May Have Played His Last Game For Leeds

Leeds United could lose a number of key first-team players this summer should they suffer relegation to the Championship.

Only a win against Tottenham Hotspur, combined with Leicester City and Everton dropping points, will be enough to keep Sam Allardyce's side in the Premier League for another season.

With the final day rapidly approaching, a number of Leeds players are perhaps already thinking about where they might be when the 2023/24 campaign rolls around.

One man, who may have already played his last game for the Yorkshire outfit due to the likely interest that will be shown in him this summer, is USA international Tyler Adams.

Could Adams have played his last Leeds game?

The defensive midfielder was signed from RB Leipzig in 2022 and is perhaps one of few players from the current campaign that can escape with any credit, in what has been an excellent debut season at Elland Road.

As per WhoScored, no player in Allardyce's squad has earned a higher average rating than Adams (6.73), while he also boasts the most tackles per game, an attribute that has been badly missed in Leeds' midfield in recent months.

He also excelled at the World Cup with Gregg Berhalter's side as they reached the round of 16, with American legend Alexi Lalas dubbing him a "monster" on Twitter, and it is perhaps no surprise that he has been linked with the likes of Arsenal and Newcastle United in recent months as a return to the Championship draws nearer.

Leeds fans have been well accustomed to seeing their top talents leave in recent seasons but losing Adams so soon after he signed, with just 26 appearances to his name this term, is a cruel blow following a disastrous campaign which will surely end in relegation this weekend.

sam-allardyce-leeds-west-ham

Unfortunately for Leeds, the 24-year-old picked up a season-ending injury at the worst possible time, with the midfielder pulling up in the warm-up ahead of the 4-2 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers in March.

It is clear the influence that he had at Leeds, as the Yorkshire outfit have won just once since then, with the 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest nowhere near enough to preserve their Premier League status.

There is no way that Adams will be fit enough to feature against Spurs this weekend and therefore, Leeds fans may have already seen the last of their £55k-per-week midfielder. Indeed, he has shown with his performances this terr, that he is more than capable of playing in the top flight, and deserves to be playing for a club that can provide that next year.

Anderson strikes after Lancashire batting slumps

ScorecardChris Rushworth claimed four wickets as Lancashire were bowled out for 204•Getty Images

Had James Anderson’s stress fracture healed a trifle more quickly, he would have been playing against Pakistan in the Test match at Lord’s. Instead of that, however, he spent his Saturday at the home of cricket. That, at any rate, is probably how Chris Firth sees it.On most weekends in the summer Firth captains Southport and Birkdale’s first team but at around 5.30am on the first morning of this game, he began tipping up around a thousand seats to remove the overnight rain from them. This is county week at Trafalgar Road and that matters to folk round here.Southport is not alone, of course. By a lunacy of the fixture list likely to make even the most tranquil Buddhist scream in frustration, the coming week sees Lancashire play at Southport at the same time as Glamorgan are playing at Colwyn Bay and Kent at Tunbridge Wells. And yes, it is the Cheltenham Festival, too. It is as though someone had decided to hold a beauty contest for England’s cricketing Elysiums. At all of these great grounds members have taken unpaid holidays in order to welcome first-class cricket. Sightscreens have been painted, hospitality sold and patios brushed to within a cubit of their stony lives. Wickets have been rolled and weather forecasts studied with more than jocular cynicism. Outground cricket is not some indulgent Betjemanesque whimsy; it could be near the heart of the English four-day season if only some counties and a few ECB officials loved it a little more and saw the long-term value of spending a few bob taking the game to the people.Rarely, though, does the composition of the teams in an outground match contain such delightful contrasts as was on offer at Trafalgar Road. In the Lancashire team, for the first two innings anyway, was Anderson, who will almost certainly open England’s bowling against Pakistan on Friday, but also Tom Moores, who was making his first-class debut. Moores, indeed, was watched by his father, Peter, not so long ago an England coach himself, but today, was simply a dad watching his lad.In the Durham side was Ben Stokes, who may line up alongside Anderson on Friday, and Adam Hickey, who had never played in the County Championship before. Of the four players, Moores had just about the better day. His 54-minute 25 helped Lancashire recover a smidgeon from 105 for 5 when Karl Brown was out for nought.Moores added 41 with Steven Croft but was dropped twice, receiving the first generosity when he nicked his first ball to Stokes at third slip, who thus dropped his second catch of the day and hurled the ball into the ground in Vizigothic fury. Merseyside cricket fans are generally unimpressed by such histrionics. “Hey, Stokesy-la! Butterfingers!” one yelled.Moores eventually nicked a catch to Michael Richardson off the medium pace of Keaton Jennings and the same bowler removed Kyle Jarvis, caught and bowled for 2, but it was not these later batsmen’s fault that Lancashire were 188 for 7 at tea or bowled out for 204 shortly after the resumption.Chris Rushworth, bowling on a surface which offered him pace and bounce but which both he and Lancashire’s Alviro Petersen described as a “good cricket wicket”, dismissed the last three batsmen in 11 balls early in the evening session to end the Lancashire innings. Rushworth finished with 4 for 30 from 17 overs while the Lancashire skipper, Croft, was the last man dismissed, caught and bowled by Sunderland’s finest beard for a valiant 54.How Croft must have regretted the profligacy of his colleagues, who had managed to turn a very respectable 91 for 2 into a very dodgy 105 for 5 in just three careless post-prandial overs. This decline began when Luke Procter, having got his nut down in characteristic fashion to make 30 in 135 minutes, flashed at Paul Coughlin but only edged a catch to Richardson. Then Petersen, perhaps surfing the contentment that comes when you make a half-century against a decent attack, called Croft for a second run but was well beaten by Jack Burnham’s throw from deep midwicket. Two overs later, Brown’s horribly flat-footed slash only nicked a catch to Jennings off Graham Onions. In less than the time it took the corporate hospitality boys to move from the claret to the port, Lancashire had gone from gentle prosperity to genteel poverty. But even after they had been bowled out 60 runs short of acceptability, Lancashire cricketers could still console themselves that they had Anderson in their attack during Durham’s first innings. This consolation appeared especially significant when Anderson removed Jennings in the third over of the day but Mark Stoneman and Scott Borthwick then added 69 for the second wicket in a manner that ranged from the confident to the vulnerable. The former was shown by the boundaries the pair stroked off Jarvis; the latter, by the over in which Borthwick played and missed five times to Anderson.Still, though, the pair survived and it looked as though Durham’s cricketers were heading for a position of strength when Procter removed both Stoneman and Burnham in the last five overs of a day that had begun at noon. Catches were edged to Moores and Croft and the Lancashire pair made no mistake. Rushworth considered the game evenly poised and few in the happy crowd on Saturday seemed keen to dispute the contention. And in many respects that final session was the best of the day. A fed and watered crowd watched the cricket in bubbling contentment and the Southport and Birkdale chairman, Tony Elwood, even sported his Bertie Wooster blazer. For the club’s volunteers, all their work was utterly worthwhile as the evening warmed. The sun shone, too, although if the tireless Lindsey Bridge could have found a ladder long enough, she would have sent someone up with a duster to give it a polish.

Nepal's effort has been one of tournament's highlights

Nepal will meet Zimbabwe in the Plate Championship final to be held at Lincoln No. 3 tomorrow. The team that has surprised everyone in this tournament conquered a second Test-playing nation, Bangladesh, today. Nepal beat Pakistan in the opening week of the competition to open the cricket-playing world’s eyes to a new corner of cricketing power. With six 15 or 16-year olds in the team, cricket’s future looks bright in the Himalayan nation. The first step in climbing the mountain towards being a full international team has been overcome here at Lincoln, no matter what happens in the final.Coach Roy Dias, who may be in charge for the last time tomorrow, said: “We’re looking forward to it. They are a very good side, but we’ll take it as just another match because every game is like a final to us.”He defended his decision to bat first, saying, “To all the people who suggested we made a mistake, I am coach and I know the side’s strengths.”A score of 180/6 off 50 overs was more than enough to see Nepal comfortably home and overcome another huge challenge, after the shock 30-run victory over Pakistan on January 22.Bangladesh was never in it, and lost by a flattering 23 runs after an uneven attempt to reach the target.Man of the match Bardan Chalise is a member of the full Nepalese national side, and it was his 27 off 90 balls that held Nepal together on Wednesday evening after a day of gales had prevented a start before tea time. This gave Nepal tail-enders Basudev Thapa and Manjit Shrestha the chance to run everything and add 44 this morning off the 30 deliveries remaining to be bowled in their innings.”This morning the boys gave me 44 runs which was magic,” said Dias, who had hoped for a mere 30 to make a competitive score. Thapa hurt his knee when batting and looks doubtful for the final.Bangladesh began well, with Gazi Salauddin hitting Shrestha for a couple of boundaries, before three wickets fell in 11 deliveries, two to the right-arm medium of captain Binod Das, who later ran out Hasibul Haoq and caught Ali Arman blindingly at midwicket.Dias told CricInfo: “I was pleased with everyone, especially the captaincy of Das, who will be the future Nepal captain, there is no doubt about it.”The former Sri Lanka Test player, who was his country’s coach from 1998-99 has been with Nepal just three months, but his experience with Muttiah Muralithran has rubbed off on off-spinner Sanjam Regmi who, along with Chalise, who took four for 38 today, is in the senior national team.”Muralitharan is a genius and I didn’t do anything with him, though I learnt a lot from him,” said Dias, who may soon be lost to Nepalese cricket unless a new contract is offered to him within “a couple of weeks.””I’ve got to decide whether to stay or go somewhere else,” said Dias. Duleep Mendis of the Asia Cricket Council has put a proposal to coach the United Arab Emirates to Dias, whose experience as a player and coach has been instrumental in Nepal’s improvement.Possibly the most obvious aspect of Nepal’s superiority in this hard-fought game was the manic fielding and spirited teamwork the players demonstrated.”If you want to play one-day cricket you have got to be a good fielding side. It was difficult because the boys were not used to those kind of drills, but there were no complaints because they all want to improve,” said Dias.”I’d like to see these guys continue from here because they have the ability,” Dias added. The country has an aim of playing in the 2011 World Cup. Dias concluded, “If they continue no-one can say they can’t do it.”

£46k-p/w Newcastle Man Scared Of Being Forgotten

Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that striker Callum Wilson is hoping not to become a "forgotten man" as Newcastle United continues to grow.

What's the latest on Callum Wilson and NUFC?

After being taken over mid-way through last season by the Saudi-led consortium, the sky is now the limit for the Magpies thanks to their new owners' extreme wealth.

And it hasn't taken much time for their financial influence to pay dividends in the Premier League, with Eddie Howe's men likely to now be playing Champions League football next term.

While club-record £63m Alexander Isak has stolen headlines of late with his dazzling displays, fellow striker Wilson hasn't been left behind just yet.

Indeed, the Englishman has five goals in his last three league outings and Jones seems to think he is desperate to maintain relevance in this fast-evolving Newcastle team.

When talking on the latest episode of Chasing Green Arrows, the insider explained how Wilson has so much self-belief but is at risk of being left behind as the club can now spend big on new players such as Isak.

Jones said: "He's obviously got this desire, Callum Wilson, to make sure he doesn't end up the forgotten man and his team, right?

"He is very, very full of belief in his own ability. He feels that he should be the main man for this team."

He added: "I think because you're at Newcastle and you can see that the project that they were promising is actually going to happen, Newcastle are going to be in the Champions League next season, they are going to sign more players. And slowly, they're going to have to drop off some of these players that were part of the project before the money arrived.

"And Callum Wilson is probably right on the verge of being one of those players. So I think that that's probably where the desire and the hunger comes from for him."

How many goals has Callum Wilson scored this season?

Seeing as Wilson has 15 goals and four assists in 26 league outings this term, he's proven himself to be a more than useful asset to Howe in the present.

However, he is now 31 years of age and having had a career blighted by injuries, it remains unclear if Newcastle will put their faith in him in the long term.

The huge fees spent on 23-year-old Isak in the summer showed that they didn't want to be over reliant on Wilson and it might be tough for the £46k-p/w.

Newcastle's Callum Wilson

Who knows just how much the Magpies will spend in the upcoming transfer window, and who they will spend it on. But if Wilson can continue to bang in the goals, working well up top with Isak over the coming months, he should be able to extend his NUFC career for at least another season.

Liverpool Eyeing Up Move For Florian Neuhaus

Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Florian Neuhaus this summer, having been linked with him in the past.

Is Neuhaus thriving in Germany?

The German was linked to joining the Reds back in the summer of 2021, at a time when midfield reinforcements were needed to make up for the loss of Gini Wijnaldum to Paris-Saint Germain. Neuhaus ended up staying at Monchengladbach, however, and Liverpool made no new signings in that area.

This continued lack of investment in the middle of the park has become increasingly problematic for the Merseysiders, as age catches up with the likes of James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Thiago.

It is essential that Liverpool make midfield additions at the end of this season, especially with Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain moving on, but with a move for Jude Bellingham appearing to be dead in the water, they need to look at alternatives.

Are Liverpool back in for midfielder?

Taking to Twitter, whilst sharing his article for 90min, reporter Graeme Bailey provided an update on Neuhaus' future, admitting that there is interest in him, as well as name-checking Liverpool in his piece as one of the clubs who are keen in the article:

"A number of Premier League clubs are looking at German star Florian Neuhaus. Back from a knee injury, Borussia Moenchengladbach are trying to tie him to a new contract – if not he could move this summer."

Neuhaus could still be a good signing for Liverpool this summer, even though his reputation arguably isn't as great as it was back in 2021, at a point where his performances for Monchengladbach were particularly strong, scoring six goals and registering five assists in the Bundesliga in 2020/21.

This season, the 26-year-old has only started 10 league matches, which is largely down to a serious knee ligament injury that saw him miss around three months of action.

He has been back playing regularly of late, though – deployed in three full 90 minutes since the middle of March, and given his age, signing him wouldn't feel like too big a gamble.

Journalist Jack Collins once hailed Neuhaus as a "magnificent" player and his all-round midfield ability as a footballer – he has 46 goal contributions (22 goals and 24 assists) in 166 Monchengladbach appearances, and netted twice in 10 caps for Germany – could help ease Liverpool's woes in that area moving forward.

Liverpool hold "genuine" interest in £50m midfielder

Liverpool have been linked with a move for Mason Mount this summer and now a new update has emerged from a reliable source on the club’s pursuit of the player.

Could Liverpool sign Mason Mount?

According to CBS reporter Ben Jacobs, Liverpool hold a “genuine” interest in the Chelsea midfielder amid stale contract negotiations at Stamford Bridge.

Jacobs tweeted: “Mount & Chelsea have been some way apart on terms. CFC have made multiple offers that Mount has turned down. Chelsea value Mount, but any agreement must be in keeping with the new incentive-driven wage structure, including decreases for lack of UCL.

“As reported, LFC interest is genuine.”

Why should Mount join Liverpool?

It is no secret that Liverpool are in desperate need of a shake-up this summer following a disappointing and inconsistent campaign this season.

The Reds have been knocked out of the FA Cup and League Cup, as well as currently being fifth in the Premier League table and set for a difficult Champions League second-leg clash with Real Madrid at the Bernabeu on Wednesday following a disappointing 5-2 defeat at Anfield in the opener of the tie.

Not only are Liverpool desperate for a refresh based on the quality displayed on the pitch so far, but are also set to lose several players who will be out of contract this summer.

James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner, Arthur Melo and Roberto Firmino are all set for an Anfield exit this summer which leaves the midfield personnel significantly weakened in depth ahead of next season.

As a result, the signing of Mount could be the perfect opportunity to bring in a young player with bags of Premier League experience and ultimately, a dream replacement for Naby Keita who is an incredibly unreliable presence.

Over 23 league appearances, the England star – who has a reported price tag of £50m – has scored three goals, registered two assists and created three big chances so far.

Furthermore, he has averaged 1.3 key passes and 1.4 shots on goal per match while impressing in a defensive capacity too, making 1.4 tackles, and winning 3.6 duels per game. That all-action nature encompasses precisely why the Chelsea ace is the ideal man to replace Keita.

Former Liverpool captain and legendary Premier League midfielder Steven Gerrard is a huge admirer of Mount and heaped praise on the Chelsea sensation:

“I’ve watched his progress. He’s a big talent for the country.

“He can create, he can score, and he’s already a European Cup winner, so I don’t think he needs the likes of myself to big him up or praise him.”

Keita is often deployed as the most advanced midfielder in Jurgen Klopp’s system, breaking the lines to link up with the forward. However, he is also relied upon to provide sound defensive transition. Those are areas in which Mount thrives too, clearly possessing the tools to offer creativity in the final third and the defensive presence in front of the back four.

With that being said, there is no doubt that Mount would be an incredible replacement for Keita next season and if the powerbrokers at Anfield can negotiate a good deal with their top-flight rivals this summer it could spark the much-needed revolution in the centre of the pitch.

Liverpool ‘in the mix’ to sign Neves

Liverpool could well be ‘in the mix’ to sign Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves at the end of the season, according to transfer expert Dean Jones.

The Lowdown: Midfielders needed at Liverpool

The Reds picked up a massive 2-0 victory at home to Everton on Monday night, breathing new life into their stuttering Premier League campaign.

There is still no doubt that midfield additions are needed in the summer transfer window, however, and Neves is one player who has been linked with a move.

He could leave Wolves once this season is over, with his current deal expiring at the end of the 2023/24 campaign and no sign of an extension on the way.

The Latest: Reds ‘in the mix’

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones talked up the idea of Neves plying his trade in a Liverpool shirt next season:

“You go through that Liverpool squad at the moment and you go through the performances that you’re seeing.

“If you’re looking for a fix, then I think Ruben Neves could certainly help them make that transition towards being a lot stronger and better in the middle of the park next season.

“He’d bring a lot to that team, so I’d be surprised if they weren’t in the mix.”

The Verdict: Would be a great signing

It remains to be seen if Liverpool have the financial power to bring in two big-money midfield signings, but if they were able to get both primary target Jude Bellingham and Neves, it could be game-changing for them.

[freshpress-quiz id=“419074″]

The 25-year-old long-shot specialist has arguably been Wolves’ best player over the past five years or so, making 238 appearances in total and wowing with his midfield quality, scoring five league goals this season, including one against the Reds.

He also enjoyed a highly impressive 92.5% pass completion rate for Portugal at the 2022 World Cup, showing his composure on the largest stage, and has been described as ‘outstanding’ by journalist Tim Spiers.

At 25, Neves would bring the younger legs that are so badly needed and he is more mobile than some give him credit for, averaging 2.5 tackles per game in the league in 2022/23 to date.

Manchester United hold ‘advantage’ in Cody Gakpo race

Manchester United hold a ‘slight advantage’ in the race to sign Netherlands star Cody Gakpo, according to journalist Marco Timmer.

The Lowdown: ‘Agreement in principle’

Gakpo is currently starring at the World Cup in Qatar and is preparing for a quarter-final clash with Argentina this evening.

The 23-year-old has scored three times in four games on the biggest stage, with recent reports suggesting that the Red Devils have reached an ‘agreement in principle’ with the forward.

The Latest: Timmer’s comments

Sports Witness relayed comments from Voetbal International reporter Timmer on Thursday regarding Gakpo.

He believes that United ‘have a slight advantage’ in the race for Gakpo, who has the same agency as Erik ten Hag, and said that the player’s agent will hold talks with numerous clubs after the World Cup.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-news-8/” title=”Latest Man Utd news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Get it done

Timmer also added that the Red Devils need a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo, so a January swoop for Gakpo seems to be a no-brainer.

Hailed as a ‘sensational player’ by Football Oranje editor and Dutch football expert Michael Bell, Gakpo has contributed to 30 goals in just 24 games for PSV this season.

He can play anywhere across the front three and is valued at a career-high €45m by Transfermarkt, so the New Year could be the perfect time to get a move over the line.

Liverpool stop contract talks with Keita

Liverpool have a number of players out of contract at the end of the season and now a new update has emerged on one particular player’s future ahead of his last six months at Anfield.

What’s the latest?

According to Football Insider, Liverpool have stopped contract talks with Naby Keita and are now willing to part ways with the player in the summer of 2023.

As per the report, the club had initially wanted to keep hold of the midfielder with the intention to extend his stay at Anfield, however, it is now claimed that Liverpool have made a huge U-turn on their negotiations.

The Reds are still not keen on losing Keita on a free transfer in the summer despite the fact that the player will be able to sign a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs in January.

Klopp can finally ditch Keita

Whether Liverpool sell Keita in the January transfer window or lose him for nothing it is without a doubt the right decision for the club to part ways with the midfielder who has been plagued with injuries throughout his time at the club.

The £130k-per-week ace – who was dubbed a “liability” by writer Zubin Daver – has had 18 incidents of injury and illness amounting to 436 days in recovery and 85 games missed in total, which has been a contributing factor to Liverpool’s struggles in rotating their midfield.

The Merseysiders paid £52.75m back in 2018 which was a club record-breaking transfer at the time, so it is safe to say that due to his unavailability and the transfer fee involved for Keita that it has been one of the biggest transfer disasters Liverpool have made in recent years.

Despite the 27-year-old’s poor injury record, remarkably there has been interest from clubs across Europe who would be keen on taking Keita from Liverpool either in January or when he becomes a free agent.

The Guinea international has reportedly attracted interest from Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, with Fabrizio Romano revealing last month that 3 or 4 clubs are monitoring the player’s situation at Liverpool:

“Borussia Dortmund are among 3-4 clubs around Europe interested in Naby Keita in case he becomes a free agent,” he said.

With that being said, the powers at Anfield must find a way to sell Keita in the upcoming transfer window if they are to have any hope of recouping some of the money wasted on the midfielder.
