Last chance for India's middle order to get it right ahead of the knockouts

Sri Lanka have had their moments in this World Cup. Can they sign-off on a high?

Big PictureDeath, taxes… India v Sri Lanka. India are set for their fourth ODI in ten days, but with their ticket to the semi-finals booked and Sri Lanka knocked out, there is a bilateral series feel to the penultimate round-robin game this World Cup. There is nothing on the line and India are purring again after the Edgbaston stutter against England last week. But, as always, count Sri Lanka out at your own peril. It was Dimuth Karunaratne’s men who had raised the World Cup from its stupor with their believe-it-or-not win over England. It was Angelo Mathews’ crazy ball that added some excitement to a similar dead rubber against West Indies. And you couldn’t have forgotten Champions Trophy 2017, when Sri Lanka hunted down 322 against India.Saturday’s match could well be Lasith Malinga’s last in World Cups. He has whipped up everything – whirling yorkers, steep bouncers (slow and fast) and cunning dippers – and will leave as the third-highest wicket-taker in World Cups. Can he rouse himself to produce another vintage performance and help Sri Lanka sign off with their heads held high?As for India, this is another chance for their rickety middle-order to tune up for the crunch game(s). The team management had spun the wheel again against Bangladesh, recalling Dinesh Karthik at the expense of Kedar Jadhav, who has struck at 80.80 and has bowled just six overs in six matches this tournament. Should they give Karthik another go and see if he can finish the innings better than Jadhav or MS Dhoni?Rishabh Pant has made 30-plus scores in his two outings at No. 4 and now has the vote of confidence from the team management. KL Rahul, too, has had pretty starts upfront, and India would ideally want both of them to kick on to bigger scores to ease the load on captain Virat Kohli and vice-captain Rohit Sharma.Form guide(Last five completed matches, most recent first)

In the spotlightKL Rahul wasn’t in India’s first-choice XI in the lead-up to the World Cup. After an injury scare to the designated No. 4 Vijay Shankar, Rahul moved into that spot and cracked a century against Bangladesh in the warm-ups. And later, after first-choice opener Shikhar Dhawan was sidelined from the tournament, Rahul was bumped to the top alongside Rohit and he responded with 57 against Pakistan. He followed it up with scores of 30, 48, 0, and 77. Where’s that big ‘un? Perhaps, it’s just around the corner, as Rahul himself had put it.His ravishing strokeplay had Kumar Sangakkara gushing in the commentary box and his maiden ton had Mahela Jayawardene tweeting: “Well played young man.. Brilliant 100!! Something special from Avishka.” Twenty-one-year-old Avishka Fernando has played only three games in this World Cup, but has made more runs (183 in three matches) than the likes of Angelo Mathews, Kusal Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva. Can he stand up to the best attack in the tournament as well?Team newsHeadingley offered slow turn for Afghanistan’s spin trio on Thursday, and it could tempt India into reuniting the wristspinners. Who will miss the cut in such a scenario: Mohammed Shami or Bhuvneshwar Kumar or Jasprit Bumrah (if they want to rest him)?India (probable): 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 KL Rahul, 3 Virat Kohli (capt), 4 Rishabh Pant, 5 MS Dhoni (wk), 6 Kedar Jadhav/Dinesh Karthik, 7 Hardik Pandya, 8 Bhuvneshwar Kumar/Mohammed Shami, 9 Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Yuzvendra Chahal, 11 Jasprit Bumrah3:46

Dilshan: Classy Avishka could go a long way for SL

Sri Lanka might consider bringing back Thisara Perera for some bowling back-up in place of Lahiru Thirimanne. Legspinner Jeffrey Vandersay was expensive against West Indies, but he provides a more attacking option than Jeevan Mendis or Malinda Siriwardana.Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Dimuth Karunaratne (capt), 2 Kusal Perera (wk), 3 Avishka Fernando, 4 Kusal Mendis, 5 Angelo Mathews, 6 Lahiru Thirimanne/Thisara Perera, 7 Dhananjaya de Silva, 8 Isuru Udana, 9 Lasith Malinga, 10 Kasun Rajitha, 11 Jeffrey VandersayPitch and conditionsThe Headingley track is likely to be flat and slow, with some assistance for the spinners. The forecast is for a bright, sunny day in Leeds.Strategy punt Sri Lanka would do well to pick Thisara and ask him to target Dhoni’s body with hard lengths and enough cover at midwicket and square leg. Thisara has dismissed Dhoni six times in 12 ODI innings while conceding 144 runs off 142 balls. Don’t give Hardik Pandya pace and, instead, ask him to manufacture it for himself in the end overs. He has been dismissed four times by slower balls in six innings.Stats and trivia Dhananjaya has taken five wickets in 37 overs at an economy rate of 4.7 this World Cup. The other Sri Lanka spinners have combined for one wicket in 20.1 overs while conceding 6.9 runs an over. Bumrah needs one wicket to get to 100 ODI wickets. Should he get there in his this match – his 57th – he will be the second-fastest Indian to the landmark after Shami. Rohit has already hit four centuries this tournament, matching Sangakkara’s achievement in 2015; no batsman has scored more hundreds in a single edition of the World Cup.

Man Utd can repeat Fernandes masterclass after bidding to sign £69m “monster”

Manchester United have failed to impress on every front this season.

Erik ten Hag’s side are currently eighth in the Premier League, but by the end of the weekend’s action, they could be in the bottom half of the table.

With that in mind, the boss will be desperate to improve his squad as United aim to climb into a European spot.

Man Utd transfers latest – Fernandes repeat inbound

According to The Sun, Man United have submitted a bid for Morten Hjulmand that would involve Facundo Pellistri moving in the opposite direction.

However, it has been rejected by Sporting, who will settle for not a penny less than his £69m release clause.

Morten Hjulmand in action.

This represents quite the price hike for a man who was signed from Lecce for only £15m back in the summer of 2023.

The Red Devils scouts have been watching the midfielder this season, but a move this January is looking unlikely.

ByCharlie Smith Feb 1, 2024 How Morten Hjulmand compares to Bruno Fernandes

It is reasonable to say that Bruno Fernandes has been United’s best signing since Sir Alex Ferguson's era. The Portuguese magician has become arguably the most important player in the side since joining from Sporting for £46.5m.

Over 212 games, the 29-year-old has registered 129 goal contributions and now wears the captain's armband.

Ten Hag will be hoping that he can repeat the Fernandes masterclass by signing another Sporting midfielder in the January transfer window, in the form of Hjulmand.

Bruno Fernandes

The Danish midfielder only joined Sporting in the summer, but his influence on the side has been enormous. The 24-year-old has featured in 24 matches this season, scoring one goal and creating two, while often playing in the midfield two of a 3-4-2-1 formation. In that respect, he's positionally different to the aforementioned Fernandes but their ability to influence the play is vast.

But what is Hjulmand’s style of play based on statistics from the 2023/24 Primeira Liga season?

The former Serie A star is a player who likes to get on the ball and dictate the play, as highlighted by his high number of touches and passes completed. If the move was to be completed, Hjulmand would slot alongside Kobbie Mainoo and replace Scott McTominay in the starting XI.

The FC Kobenhaven youth player would bring control to the United midfield, which the Scot currently doesn’t, as his touches and passes completed per 90 is in the bottom 20% of Premier League midfielders, according to FBref.

Furthermore, Hjulmand is extremely solid out of possession, even being labelled as a “monster” by football journalist Zach Lowy.

The Sporting rock protects the backline with a proactive approach, and he often regains possession via tackles and reading the game to recover the ball.

The fact he can tackle dribblers would also make United much more secure in transitions, which is where Ten Hag’s team have been vulnerable.

Overall, Hjulmand is a typical defensive midfielder who would provide so much security to the United team. Although the fee is steep, Ten Hag should look to repeat the Fernandes trick this month.

Journalist says West Ham could move to sign Tah with Moyes a "big fan"

West Ham United, after handing title hopefuls Arsenal a shock defeat at The Emirates last time out, sit as high as sixth in the Premier League and only seven points adrift of the top four, to sum up, what has so far been an excellent season for those at the London Stadium.

With the January transfer window now set to open, the Hammers also have the chance to improve even further and hand David Moyes the chance to take them to unprecedented heights in England's top flight. With that said, one journalist has suggested that West Ham could yet move to sign a player who Moyes is a "big fan" of in the winter window and one who could be an instant upgrade for his side.

West Ham transfer news

Despite losing Declan Rice to Arsenal in the summer transfer window, West Ham can now look back on it as success. They used the Rice money to sign the likes of Mohammed Kudus, Edson Alvarez, James Ward-Prowse and Konstantinos Mavropanos – all of whom have quickly found their feet for the Hammers. Now, Paul Brown believes that Moyes and co could repeat their transfer genius by landing Jonathan Tah in January.

"It's interesting that they'd be going for a central defender because they seem quite well stocked there. That would suggest that somebody is leaving if they were to do a deal like that. Tah is actually someone who's been on their radar for two or three years. I know that Moyes personally is a big fan of that player. He's been to watch him personally over the years.

Jonathan Tah in action for Bayer Leverkusen

"There was a time when West Ham potentially even did make a bid for Tah. For whatever reason the transfer didn't come off. I think he's remained on their radar since and it wouldn't surprise me if they resurrect that one. I think the squad has needs in other areas that are probably greater than centre-back. So it will be interesting to see which way they invest their money in January. I do think there'll be signings coming in if they can make them."

"Strong" Tah could be an instant upgrade

Part of a Bayer Leverkusen side who are yet to lose this season, Tah could be a major coup for West Ham if they pursued a deal in the winter window. His European experience would particularly provide Moyes with a boost on top of his aerial dominance – standing at 6 ft 5 in. Tah's stats, meanwhile, prove that he could be the perfect partner for Kurt Zouma and an upgrade on Nayef Aguerd for Moyes in the January transfer window.

No first-class honours for Cardiff MCCU in record 568-run defeat

Somerset 387 for 4 dec and 345 for 9 dec beat Cardiff MCCU 118 and 46 (Overton 6-24, Davey 4-21) by 568 runs
ScorecardThe value of awarding first-class status to university matches is once again under scrutiny after Somerset completed a record-breaking rout of Cardiff MCCU in their season opener at Taunton.Cardiff had been faced with a nominal target of 615 on the third afternoon of their match, after Somerset had completed their batting practice with centuries for James Hildreth in the first innings and Ed Byrom in the second.Sixteen overs later, Cardiff’s last wicket had fallen – all out for 46 as Craig Overton (6 for 24) and Josh Davey (4 for 21) shared all ten between them.Sam Pearce, with 11 from 20 balls, was the only Cardiff batsman to reach double figures; Oskar Kolk, with 9 from 29, at least managed to stay at the crease for a full half an hour.Batting collapses in this day and age are not limited to student line-ups of course – just ask England, who were routed for 77 in 30.2 overs by West Indies in Bridgetown earlier this year, or Australia, whose 60 all out at Trent Bridge in 2015 was done and dusted in 18.3.However, the statistical gulf between the sides was among the most yawning of all time – the eighth-biggest in terms of runs in all first-class cricket, and the largest ever recorded in a first-class fixture in England. It exceeded, by six runs, the 562-run trouncing that Australia inflicted on England at The Oval in 1934, a match in which Don Bradman (244) and Bill Ponsford (266) added 451 for the second wicket in a first-innings total of 701, before Clarrie Grimmett’s five wickets shot England out for 145 on the fourth and final day.And it was the fifth time in which a University side had lost by more than 500 runs to county opposition, following Nottinghamshire’s 541-run defeat of Durham MCCU in 2013, and a trio of defeats for Cambridge (by 523, 522 and 517 runs), one in 1984 and two in consecutive matches in 2016.This defeat did, however, fall someway short of the all-time runs record – 685 – by New South Wales against Queensland in 1929-30, a match in which that man Bradman again made an unbeaten 452, his highest first-class score. But, as if to prove that the student rookies have to start somewhere and that the only way from here is up, Cardiff’s defeat also fell way short of the largest runs defeat ever recorded in a Test match. This time, it was Bradman himself on the receiving end, on Test debut at the Exhibition Ground in Brisbane, when his scores of 18 and 1 formed part of a crushing 675-run defeat against England.

Matt O’Riley tempted by Premier League move as Newcastle update emerges

Newcastle United have reportedly been informed that they will need to smash a club's transfer record to complete the signing of their "wonderful" player.

Newcastle eyeing new midfielders

The Magpies have been hit hard in so many different areas of the pitch because of injuries this season, with key men missing in goal, defence and attack. Perhaps the biggest blow in some respect has been the 10-month suspension handed to midfielder Sandro Tonali, however, with Newcastle's summer signing banned after being found guilty of betting breaches during his time at AC Milan.

It is a huge setback, both for the player and the club, with Tonali making such a promising start to life at St James' Park, but now not available until next season.

The Italian's absence has heightened the need for Newcastle to bring in a new central midfielder during the January transfer window, with Manchester City and England man Kalvin Phillips seemingly emerging as a clear front-runner. He is surely desperate to move away in January, in order to play more, and he could be an ideal fit for Eddie Howe in the middle of the park.

Newcastle want Matt O'Riley

According to a new update from TEAMtalk however, Newcastle are interested in signing Celtic midfielder Matt O'Riley. The player could be tempted by a big move to England, but the Magpies will have to break the Hoops' record sale of £25m to get a deal done.

Celtic'sMattO'Riley

"Newcastle United have scouted the 23-year-old on multiple occasions, including whilst he was playing senior international football for his country, Denmark. The Magpies are not alone in their admiration with Championship leaders Leicester City and Premier League mainstays West Ham United also monitoring O’Riley. Newcastle have been present at Celtic Park and are among a host of clubs around Europe who could move in the upcoming window for the talented midfielder."

O'Riley is an extremely highly-rated player at Celtic, with the 23-year-old such an influential player in central midfield, combining creativity with hard work. The Englishman is enjoying a fantastic season for the Scottish Premiership giants, scoring nine goals and chipping in with five assists in the league in 2023/24 to date.

Celtic likely won't want to lose him, with manager Brendan Rodgers clearly a big admirer of his midfielder, saying of him back in August: "I really like him, his build-up play is good, he takes the ball, and he needs to work on his pressing and intensity but he is a wonderful footballer and he is a good guy as well."

While the step up to the Premier League from the Scottish Premiership is great, O'Riley could certainly be an interesting option for Newcastle, should Howe believe he can get the best out of him.

He is still young enough to improve a lot more as a player, but the ingredients are already there as he is showing week in, week out, and he is one of the first names on the team sheet for Scotland's biggest club.

'Unforgivable!' – Jamie Carragher issues brutal verdict on Darwin Nunez as Liverpool's title hopes go up in smoke

Jamie Carragher labelled Darwin Nunez's miss as "unforgivable" during the derby defeat against Everton as Liverpool's title hopes went up in smoke.

Liverpool beaten 2-0 by EvertonNunez guilty of missing an easy opportunityCarragher fumed at the striker and Klopp's tacticsWHAT HAPPENED?

In what marked Jurgen Klopp's final derby at Goodison Park, Liverpool's aspirations to secure the league title suffered a mortal blow as Everton secured victory, handing Klopp his first defeat at the venue, thanks to goals from Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Despite Liverpool's repeated attacks, they failed to capitalise on key opportunities, including a glaring chance before half-time that fell to Nunez – with the Uruguayan squandering the opportunity by shooting straight at Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

AdvertisementGetty WHAT CARRAGHER SAID

Following the match, Carragher expressed his dismay at Nunez's miss and said: "The chance that Nunez misses before half-time, that is unforgivable at this level. That is not acceptable at this level, certainly when Liverpool are going for the title."

Nunez has blown hot and cold for Liverpool scoring just 33 times in 92 appearances. Carragher believes that if the striker fails to establish himself as more dependable and reliable his days at Anfield might be numbered, especially with a changing of the guard in the dugout looming.

"I think there is a question to ask," he added. "You want him to do well because there is so much that you like because he gives everything, he runs and causes trouble and gets the odd goal and gets an assist. But after two years when Liverpool this season are going to the title and those big games, you need your man to score away at Old Trafford, away at Goodison, in the European game at Atalanta. There is no time to waste, this is not October or November. This is the business end.

"In terms of Nunez and where the club go forward now, we have all been in squads where someone comes in and maybe you talk about the first year and maybe say, okay he’s getting up to speed with and he’s improving, and it looked like he was at the start of the season. But it has ground to a halt. You are looking at it now and after two years, I don’t think there is going to be a massive improvement in him. What we have seen in the last two years is what he is. He can cause trouble, he can be erratic with his finishing. I don’t think it is going to be enough to win you the biggest trophies so I think there is a big decision to be made on him in the summer."

CARRAGHER QUESTIONS KLOPP'S TACTICS

Carragher came down heavily on Mohamed Salah and also questioned Klopp's tactical plan as he believes that Liverpool lacked a plan B after the Reds failed to respond effectively in the final 30 minutes of the game after going 2-0 down.

"This is the end of the title run for Liverpool. It almost feels like the end," he said.

"Tonight is Everton's night, you have to take it on the chin. They played into Everton’s hands. The way Liverpool started was really naive, poor, giving silly fouls away. I thought Liverpool were in control at the start of the second half. And if they got one, they would go on and get two. Then Mo Salah gave the ball away. He has looked a shadow of himself for a lot of this season but especially since he’s come back from injury. He is Liverpool’s legend, superstar, one of the all-time greats. But he has been so far off it. And as soon as it went 2-0 Liverpool ran out of ideas."

GettyWHAT NEXT FOR LIVERPOOL?

Liverpool are just a point ahead of third-placed Manchester City, who have two games in hand, and three behind leaders Arsenal after 34 games. They must win four games on the trot to wrap up the season, starting with an away fixture against West Ham on Saturday, to have an outside chance of getting their hands on the Premier League trophy.

Pochettino must unleash "unreal" Chelsea youngster to ease Gallagher blow

Of all the traditional 'big six' sides in the Premier League this year, Chelsea have perhaps had the most confusing season.

The Blues started the season in a vein of form no better than last year before going on to thrash Tottenham Hotspur away – while they were top of the league – and holding treble-winning Manchester City to a 4-4 draw at Stamford Bridge.

It looked like Mauricio Pochettino's men had turned a corner, only for them to fall to an embarrassing 4-1 defeat away to Newcastle United, which was then followed by a win over Brighton & Hove Albion.

Conor Gallagher for Chelsea

In short, the Blues have been consistently inconsistent this year. Still, they could find the game against Manchester United later today even more challenging without their stand-in captain, Conor Gallagher.

The 23-year-old was shown two yellow cards against the Seagulls and will, therefore, be absent for the trip to Old Trafford; while this is undoubtedly a problem for the Pensioners, they have one surprise option: play Noni Madueke.

Noni Madueke's stats this season

Gallagher's sending off on the weekend firmly put the breaks on what has been a relatively impressive season for the Epsom-born midfielder so far this year.

He has gone from a bit part player who looked destined to leave the club over the summer to one that has been given the captain's armband in Reece James' absence – another red card mind – and has generally looked like one of the best players whenever he steps out onto the pitch, registering four assists already this season.

Unfortunately, though, his mindlessness on Sunday has left his manager in the lurch as, despite spending an exorbitant amount of money on new players in the summer, there isn't really a natural replacement for Gallagher in the squad, or is there?

Noni Madueke.

Madueke has been slowly growing into a more prominent role at Chelsea following his £30m move in January, and while he is still firmly a bench player, he has shown glimpses of brilliance along the way.

A goal in the EFL Cup, some impactful substitute appearances, and an impressive record with England's U21s suggest a player ready to make a name for himself at Stanford Bridge. His numbers for this season, while from a much smaller sample size, aren't that much worse than Gallagher's.

The "unreal" 21-year-old, as described by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, certainly looks more of a goal threat, and while his passing numbers don't match up, that is fairly understandable given the role he is expected to fulfil in the team.

Now, were he to be played in the central midfield position that has been occupied by Gallagher this evening, we might just see those improve, and while he has played on the wing for the Blues, he was frequently deployed in central midfield as a youth player.

Noni Madueke's stats in central midfield

Now, it has been quite some time since the former PSV man played in the centre of the park – just shy of three years, to be exact – but he was deployed there fairly frequently as a youth player, both for PSV's junior sides and England's U16/17 sides.

He has made 14 competitive appearances as a central midfielder, racking up three goals one assist and coming out on the winning side on eight occasions, only losing three games.

The other benefit to playing the "brilliant" – as described by former Chelsea player Pat Nevin – youngster in midfield is that it will allow Pochettino to field a front three of Raheem Sterling, Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer, which could be the perfect attack to run amok against a fragile and totally demoralised Man United side.

Ultimately, it will be risky to play Madueke in this role, but given his youth-level experience, the lack of proper alternatives in the side, and the prospect of fielding that front three, it might be the best option for Pochettino.

Queensland qualify for semi-finals despite Callum Ferguson ton

Chasing a revised 359-run target, South Australia fell short by 24 runs as the spin duo of Matthew Kuhnemann and Mitchell Swepson shared six wickets

The Report by Alex Malcolm03-Oct-2018Callum Ferguson gets off his feet to hit the ball•Getty Images

A sublime century from South Australia’s Callum Ferguson was not enough as Queensland won the first qualifying final at North Sydney Oval to qualify for the semi-finals of the JLT Cup despite finishing last in the round-robin part of the competition.Under the revamped rules in Australia’s domestic one-day competition, all six teams advanced to the knock-out stage after playing each other once in a round-robin phase. The Bulls won just one game in five and finished four points behind South Australia on the table. However, they piled on 5 for 363 after losing the toss on Wednesday, courtesy a superb team batting display, and were then able to defend well enough on the small ground. The spin duo of Matthew Kuhnemann and Mitchell Swepson took six important scalps between them to bowl out the Redbacks for 334, 25 runs short of a revised DLS target of 359 after one over was lost to rain. The Bulls’ mammoth total looked like a par score as Redbacks opener Jake Weatherald set the chase alight with a blistering 69 from 54 balls. He sent the express pace of Billy Stanlake to all parts and his opening stand with debutant Conor McInerney reached 86 in just 11 overs. The left-arm orthodox spin of Kuhnemann was introduced and he changed the game immediately by removing McInerney and conceding just three runs in his opening over. He forced Weatherald to hole out to long-on four overs later and asked the Redbacks to rebuild.Ferguson continued his supreme form and got good support from Jake Lehmann, Tom Cooper and Alex Carey. But all three failed to convert their starts with Swepson and Kuhnemann claiming the trio, leaving Ferguson to get 64 runs from 44 balls with the tail. He reached his hundred off just 78 balls but sliced a catch to deep point off Mark Steketee in the next over to dash the Redbacks’ hopes.Earlier, Sam Heazlett set up the Bulls’ monstrous total with a blazing 83 off just 59 balls at the top of the order. He struck nine fours and five sixes, including taking 22 from one Kane Richardson over, before finally mis-hitting one. Ferguson held on to the awkward skier, running back at mid-off.Chris Lynn again made a slow start just as he did during his brilliant century against New South Wales. He was 9 off 29 balls at one stage before he cleared the fence for the first time. He struck two more sixes to go with seven fours in his 68 before falling to Cameron Valente.Joe Burns and Jimmy Peirson picked up the slack with a rollicking 116-run stand to push the Bulls towards 350. Peirson made 70 off just 49 balls, while Burns finished unbeaten on 80 off 77.The Bulls now face Tasmania in the first semi-final on Saturday at Drummoyne Oval in Sydney.

Despite the heartbreak, Shakira remains resilient and focused on her music career. Her long-awaited 12th album, "Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran," was released recently, marking her return to the music scene. The Colombian singer emphasised that the thought of growing old alone does not upset her, as she cherishes the support of her friends during the darkest moments of her life.
