Southampton pursuing move for "very quick" rival Championship talent

Southampton are reportedly interested in completing the signing of a "very quick" Championship player, but it may not be easy to get a deal over the line.

Southampton's promotion chances

Saints suffered the misery of being relegated from the Premier League last season, but it was hoped that a swift return to the top flight would be on the cards, as they went into the 2023/24 campaign as one of the favourites for promotion. While not one of the leading two clubs in the automatic promotion positions currently, Russell Martin's side sit in a healthy fourth place in the table after a brilliant win over West Brom.

It could be that Martin looks to do some important business during the January transfer window, adding sprinklings of quality to the squad and ensuring that his team's chances of going up are as good as they can possibly be. A new update regarding Saints' potential upcoming business has now emerged, as they look to nab a player from under the noses of one of their rivals.

Southampton want Tom Fellows

According to a fresh report from The Daily Mail, Southampton are interested in signing West Brom youngster Tom Fellows but the Baggies are trying to tie him down to a new deal.

"West Bromwich Albion are trying to keep hold of forward Tom Fellows amid mounting interest from Championship rivals Leicester City and Southampton. The highly rated 20-year old is out of contract at the end of the season and Albion are keen to get him to sign new terms.

"Albion are in the process of being taken over and the prospective new owners have already indicated they want Fellows to stay but Leicester and Southampton sense an opportunity to snap up a young, versatile player of potential and are monitoring developments ahead of January."

Fellows could be a really exciting signing for Southampton if he decides against committing his future to West Brom, with the 20-year-old midfielder making a sporadic impact at the Hawthorns this season.

While Fellows' appearances don't yet include a single start, he has made five cameos in the Championship, as well as playing once in the EFL Cup. In the latter, he completed all 100% of his passes, highlighting the technical quality that he has in his armoury.

In fact, West Brom manager Carlos Corberan has clearly been impressed with what he has seen of the youngster in the past, saying of him:

"He is one player we need to be calm and give him time because he needs time to show what he has. He’s a very quick player and can manage the right and left foot and he can beat players with the one-v-one – maybe with this description you think I am talking about the best player in the world!"

Southampton wouldn't necessarily be signing an immediate key player, given his lack of minutes for the Baggies this season, but he would certainly be considered an exciting prospect for the future.

Imortal Tricolor pressiona

Lei do Ex aparece

Imortal Tricolor mata o jogo

Lucas Silva sacramenta a goleada tricolor

In an interview with , the defender said of Mbappe: "They haven’t told us anything. It seems that it is a possibility that he can come. In Madrid, the best have to come and he is one of the best. For the League and our football, it would be good, just like Lewandowski has gone to Barcelona."

When asked if the arrival of the star player will have any adverse effect on the dressing room atmosphere, the Real Madrid star said: "No jealousy, but the people who have been in the club for the longest time are in charge of everyone rowing in the same direction; that when one derails a little, grab him by the ear and put him on the track of our train."

'I want to be seen as a genuine allrounder' – Jason Holder

At the start of 2018, Jason Holder averaged 29.00 with the bat in Test cricket, and 38.52 with the ball. Those numbers fit the widespread perception of Holder at the time; a useful lower-order batsman and a useful medium-fast workhorse, but perhaps not good enough in either capacity to make a top Test team as a batsman or bowler alone. In five Tests this year, though, all of them played in the last two months, Holder’s record has improved dramatically, particularly on the bowling front. Three Tests against Sri Lanka and two against Bangladesh have brought him 28 wickets at 12.00, including three five-wicket hauls, and 265 runs at 37.85.On Saturday, after a player-of-the-match performance in West Indies’ 166-run win at Sabina Park, Holder’s career numbers finally looked like those of a top-drawer allrounder, his batting and bowling averages on the right sides of 30. He credited the selectors for giving him, and the young players who are now growing into the team’s recognisable core, a run of opportunities to find their feet as Test cricketers.”I just think it’s coming together for me now,” Holder said at his post-match press conference. “I’m probably 30-odd Test matches into my Test career, and I’ve always remembered Clive Lloyd saying that he learned to play Test cricket after three years.”It took him three years to understand the Test game, and it’s good to see the selectors have given this group [of players] some confidence in terms of sticking with them. I guess I’m now getting into my own in terms of my cricket at the international level, I felt the skill level was always there. It’s just a matter of putting it together.”Holder also admitted that he had benefitted from helpful bowling conditions. And while he has been a consistent lower-order contributor on those same surfaces, he hoped to make bigger scores more often and push for a move up the order.”Quite frankly, I think the surfaces obviously helped me in terms of my movement and conditions were in my favour pretty much in terms of this home series. I would say things are really coming together for me, both with bat and ball.”I still would like to be a little bit more consistent in terms of getting a few more scores, but batting down at No. 8 and 9, for me, it’s quite difficult to really post a healthy score unless you’re batting with the last recognised batsman, but we weren’t able to get that partnership that we were looking for in the end.”Holder batted at No. 7 in the series against Sri Lanka, but moved further down the order against Bangladesh with the team going in with an extra batsman. While he wants to bat at No. 6 or 7, eventually, he said the decision would have to be made by the selectors.”I would love to, you know, but in terms of the context of the team at this present time, that’s the way the selectors have gone,” Holder said. “That’s my ultimate goal, to be in the allrounder’s position and be seen as a genuine allrounder. Hopefully with my performances, the selectors will see and push me up.”CWI Media

Perhaps part of the reason for Holder not yet getting that genuine allrounder’s slot is the burden it will place on him in a busy year for West Indies, particularly since he’s already managing a shoulder that’s at less than 100%.”I’m playing the one-dayers [against Bangladesh] and afterwards straight into the CPL,” Holder said. “I don’t think we get any rest until probably until the end of the year. We’ve got cricket now from here until December, there’s no rest. It’s just a matter of me trying to manage it as best as I probably can.”It’s just a bit of tendinitis in my right shoulder. Obviously I had an operation on my elbow at the end of 2017, and I guess in trying to take some load off my elbow I put a little bit more strain on my shoulder. It’s something that really crept up on me in the World Cup Qualifier, so I’m just trying to manage it as best as I possibly can.”While praising the bowlers for setting West Indies up to beat Bangladesh 2-0, Holder wanted to see some improvement from the batsmen, particularly against spin bowling, after they slumped to 129 all out in the second innings at Sabina Park. With tours of India and Bangladesh coming up later in the year, he wanted his batsmen to find solutions to what he felt had been a long-standing problem.”I just think we need to understand our games a little bit more, work on a few more scoring options to expand our game, especially when the slower bowlers come on,” Holder said. “It’s probably been a problem that’s plagued West Indies cricket in the last seven to ten years in terms of how we’ve played slower bowling.”The wicket did assist their spinners up front and they’re heavily reliant on their spinners as well, so we’ve got to find a way to negotiate their spinners on tough tracks. Maybe a bit more sweeping, maybe a bit more improvising in terms of throwing them off their line and length. I think that’s something we really need to pay attention to, especially going down to the subcontinent in the latter half of the year.”Holder wasn’t too pleased with the surface at Sabina Park, where he felt the bounce had been too uncertain.”I felt as though the pitch deteriorated quite quickly,” Holder said. “It dried out after the first day, [when] it was very very moist. It dried out, but still, variable bounce, which for me you don’t really want to be seeing in Test cricket.”I just feel we need to do a little bit more in terms of our pitches to have consistent carry throughout the entire game, as opposed to balls keeping low and some balls popping. I was a little disappointed in the way it turned out, but at the end of it it’s still good to see the guys adjusted well on the surface and we got ourselves out of a tough spot after losing the toss.”

Australia women seek first T20 series win in nearly three years

England, meanwhile, are hoping to recover quickly after losing their last two matches back-to-back

The Preview by Annesha Ghosh30-Mar-2018

BCCI

Big PictureIf the Ashes-retaining campaign had been “a good starting point” for Australia to stage a turnaround after relinquishing their world titles in both limited-overs formats, captain Meg Lanning’s return to international cricket now awaits commemoration in the form of a double series triumph.A T20 series victory for the first time in nearly three years beckons Australia, soon after their 3-0 ODI series win against India. Barring the eight-wicket loss against England, in Lanning’s absence, Australia have looked menacing in their approach and application, with their batting and bowling units syncing perfectly.Heather Knight’s England, on the other hand, would be wary after suffering two successive defeats in as many days ahead of the final. Having razed down both their opponents in their first two games, fielding all their three debutants on tour, they found themselves restricted to 96 in their last encounter against Australia, and yielded to India for 107 on Thursday.England are likely, therefore, to return to a more tested combination, featuring old hand Jenny Gunn, who became the first cricketer to play 100 T20Is, on March 25.Form guideAustraliaWWLWL (last five completed matches, most recent first)
England LLWWWIn the spotlightMuch of England’s fortunes on Saturday will rest on their most prolific run-getter in this tournament. That it was the same batsman, Danielle Wyatt, who also scripted the side’s come-from-behind, points-levelling Ashes campaign in November will not be lost on Australia. Apart from Wyatt’s maiden international ton, which trumped Beth Mooney’s 70-ball 117 at the Manuka Oval, Australia will do well to also bear in mind her demolition of India six days ago.To outdo their fiercest rivals a second time this series, Australia will require the sharp-shooting skills of their only bowler to claim a hat-trick, Megan Schutt, who jointly leads the tournament wickets chart with six scalps. With a little aid off the pitch, Schutt’s change-ups, especially her cutters, can fox anyone. She will hope to have the support of the left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen, who has been the stingiest bowler – among those who have bowled 14 overs or more – in this tournament.Team newsBeth Mooney, who missed Australia’s last game with a mild abdominal strain, briefly trained in the nets on Friday and is likely to be available for selection. Rachael Haynes, however, missed training due to illness.Australia (possible): 1 Alyssa Healy (wk), 2 Beth Mooney, 3 Meg Lanning (capt), 4 Ellyse Perry, 5 Elyse Villani, 6 Ashleigh Gardner, 7 Rachael Haynes/Nicola Carey, 8 Delissa Kimmince, 9 Jess Jonassen, 10 Megan Schutt 11 Amanda-Jade WellingtonEngland quick bowler Anya Shrubsole is out of contention as she continues to recover from a shoulder injury.England (possible): 1 Danielle Wyatt, 2 Amy Jones (wk), 3 Tammy Beaumont, 4 Natalie Sciver, 5 Heather Knight (capt), 6 Fran Wilson, 7 Jenny Gunn, 8 Alice Davidson-Richards, 9 Natasha Farrant, 10 Danielle Hazell, 11 Sophie Ecclestone/Alex HartleyPitch and conditionsThe tracks at Brabourne Stadium have been so flat that three of the 10 highest women’s T20I totals were amassed over the past week. However, if the same track as the one on which England played back-to-back matches against Australia and India is to be used, the sluggishness of the surface should keep the spinners interested. In that case, a low-scoring contest cannot be ruled out.Stats and trivia England opener Danielle Wyatt needs 29 runs to surpass her Indian counterpart Smriti Mandhana as the leading run-scorer in the series. Australia’s last series victory in T20Is came in August 2015, when they consigned Ireland to a 3-0 clean sweep.Quotes”Been a while since we got a T20I series win. If we get over the line tomorrow, the girls will be really pleased about that.”
“Two defeats is not ideal but T20 is a very fickle game, it changes very quickly. Looking to turn it around and put in a good performance.”

Gayle, Rahul launch Kings XI to the top

The two openers smashed fifties in a revised chase of 125 off 13 overs to crush Kolkata Knight Riders

The Report by Deivarayan Muthu21-Apr-2018
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsIt is quite rare that T20 matches are decided in the Powerplay. Saturday was one such day when Kings XI Punjab’s openers KL Rahul and Chris Gayle outmuscled Kolkata Knight Riders’ Chris Lynn and Robin Uthappa to put them on top of the points table after a rain-hit clash. While KKR struck eight boundaries in their first six overs, Kings XI smashed 14 and were 73 for 0 by the end of the Powerplay in a chase of 192.Rain then forced a delay of about 90 minutes, after which the target was revised to 125 off 13 overs. Rahul holed out for a barnstorming 60 off 27 balls, with his team nine away from victory, but Gayle continued to do his thing and finished the chase with a straight six. Gayle stayed unbeaten on 62 off 38 balls – his third fifty-plus score in three games this season. If Narine doesn’t get you, Lynn will
Sunil Narine ran down the track against Mujeeb Zadran’s spin and holed out to deep midwicket in the second over for 1 off four balls. It wasn’t a particularly bad thing for KKR, considering Narine had tried to hit every ball, but it just did not come off today. Mujeeb then ventured wide of the crease and bowled offbreaks as well as the googly to keep Lynn guessing. Uthappa, however, cleared the path for Lynn by dumping the Afghanistan mystery spinner out of the attack. He upset the lengths with three fours behind square, including a reverse sweep, in a 15-run over.Uthappa kept the scorecard ticking and moved to 24 off 16 balls; by then KKR were 50 for 1 in six overs. Lynn then got stuck into the left-arm pace of Barinder Sran and cracked three boundaries in four balls. The pick of the shots was a front-foot pull – still head and a terrific bat-swing and all that jazz – into the stands beyond midwicket. Just like that things were dandy for Lynn.Lynn’s strength is to hit the ball in the ‘V’. In an interview with , Lynn said: “My risk versus reward is so much better hitting the ball straight. Even though it’s a bigger boundary, I’d rather do that”. Kings XI’s seamers, though, did not feed him the lengths and angles to go down the ground. So, Lynn cleared his front leg and muscled the ball in the arc between long leg and long-on. No less than 42 of his 74 runs came on the leg side.Respite for Kings XI
It was Ashwin himself who provided the breakthrough for Kings XI when he removed Uthappa for the fifth time in 10 IPL matches. The in-form Nitish Rana then fell for 3 in the next over after a mix-up with Lynn. After conceding 20 runs in his first two overs in the Powerplay, Mujeeb gave away only 12 in his next two overs.Ashwin also kept Lynn quiet, but his Tamil Nadu team-mate Dinesh Karthik was more fluent against him, whipping him for back-to-back fours through midwicket in the 11th over.Ankit Rajpoot’s hard lengths – neither driveable nor pullable – and Andrew Tye’s knuckle balls also contributed to KKR’s slowdown. One such ball had Lynn feathering behind in the 16th over. Sran then nipped out Andre Russell and Karthik in the 17th and the 19th overs to set KKR back further. KKR managed only 45 off the last five overs, but Lynn’s assault at the top meant they still posted 191 for 7.Gayle and Rahul at it again
But that score looked smaller when Rahul and Gayle raised their third successive fifty-plus opening stand. There is a method behind their madness: Rahul’s job is to go after every bowler, while Gayle bides his time and picks his target. The first two balls of Shivam Mavi and Andre Russell were sent to the boundary by Rahul. Gayle, at the other end, was bothered by the early swing and bounce of the 19-year old quick, but won the bout against his West Indies team-mate Russell, again. Before this match, Gayle had hit 50 runs off 30 balls from Russell in the IPL. He stretched that tally to 71 off 37 balls, before Russell clutched his leg and hobbled off the field, five balls into his second over. Narine then bowled two cheap overs but the wristspinners – Kuldeep Yadav and Piyush Chawla – leaked runs at the other end. Rain handed KKR a reprieve in the ninth over, but by then Kings XI were 96 for 0.The tempo did not change after the break. Kings XI now needed 29 off 28 balls, and Gayle bludgeoned a six first ball upon return to bring up a fifty off 28 balls. In the next over, Rahul brought up a fifty of his own with a six, off 24 balls. He, ultimately, picked out deep midwicket, attempting another six, the only blip in an otherwise immaculate chase.

Aston Villa vs Crystal Palace: Head-to-head record, key stats & more

Aston Villa and Crystal Palace are two of the country's most famous clubs, with long and storied histories in the English game, and while they have faced off against one another a fair number of times since their initial meeting 110 years ago, they probably haven't played each other as often as you might have first assumed.

In the years since that first meeting back in 1913, the two sides have only played each other 51 times, and we at Football FanCast have everything you need to know as the two teams prepare to meet again in the Premier League.

It might still be early in the season, but with five games under their belt for Palace and six for Villa, we can start to draw conclusions from their form and how they're approaching the league this year, giving us some idea of how it'll play out at Villa Park this Saturday.

The hosts have had a real rollercoaster start to their campaign, with a nightmare 5-1 league defeat away to Newcastle United, immediately followed by a 4-0 home win against Everton the following weekend. They followed that up with three wins on the bounce, beating Burnley 3-1 and Hibernian home and away to qualify for the Europa Conference League. Although, just as they were looking like they had found some genuine form, they lost 3-0 away to Liverpool – and it could've been a lot worse.

For Palace's part, they have yet to be able to show much consistency either, with two league wins against Sheffield United and Wolverhampton Wanderers, a loss against ten-man Arsenal and a draw away to Brentford.

Those results leave the visitors in seventh place on seven points and Villa in tenth place on six points, leaving the game evenly poised for the neutral to enjoy.

Aston Villa vs Crystal Palace: What's their head-to-head record?

In total, Villa and Palace have played one another 51 times across all competitions since that first meeting over a century ago, meaning that despite both sides being staples of English football, they have only played an average of 0.46 times a year.

The primary reason for this strange lack of games is the 49-year gap between their first game – an FA Cup tie in 1913 – and their second game – another FA Cup tie, this time in 1962. This gap is due to Palace spending much of the first half of the 20th century in the lower leagues, constantly moving between the fourth, third and second divisions.

This gap in quality was clear to see when the two teams finally started to play one another regularly in the late 60s, and Villa would often come away winners from their encounters with the South London side.

In fact, Palace would win just three of their 20 clashes with Villa between 1968 and 1991, while their Birmingham opposition won ten times. So, it shouldn't come as much of a surprise to hear that overall, it's the Villans that have the advantage in this fixture, coming away the victors 22 times to Palace's 14.

That said, the gap has narrowed in recent years, and this fixture has become increasingly competitive.

Aston Villa vs Crystal Palace: What's their record at Villa Park?

With Villa's historical dominance in this fixture, it should come as no surprise that games played at Villa Park almost always result in a victory for the Claret and Blue. Although, perhaps the seeming inevitability of that result is a little unexpected.

In the 26 games played in the West Midlands, Villa have emerged victorious 17 times, giving them a staggeringly impressive win rate of 65.3%.

For their part, Palace have won just three games at Villa Park, a shockingly low win rate of 11.5%.

Aston Villa vs Crystal Palace: What's their record at Selhurst Park?

While their form away from home in this fixture is undeniably abysmal, Palace fans can at least rest assured that when they are playing host to their Claret and Blue opposition, they tend to fair much better – even if they can't quite recreate the sheer dominance displayed by Villa at home.

In the 24 games that have been played at Selhurst Park over the years, the Eagles have won 11 of them, giving them a respectable win rate of 45.8%.

The second most likely outcome in South London is a draw, with the spoils being shared on nine separate occasions, or about 37.5% of the time, while Villa have won just four games away from home.

Aston Villa vs Crystal Palace: Which team has the most goals?

To win more games, you generally have to score more goals, right? Well, that's certainly the case in this fixture, as it's once again the Villans that emerge from this head-to-head victorious.

In the 51 games between the sides, Villa have found the back of the net 70 times, meaning they average 1.3 goals per game against their South London opponents.

Unfortunately, it's less pleasant reading for the Palace faithful as they have only managed to score 40 goals in the 51 times this fixture has been contested, giving them a paltry ratio of just 0.7 goals per game.

Aston Villa vs Crystal Palace: What happened in last season's fixtures?

The two sides met twice last year, with Palace playing host in August and Villa doing so in March.

The Eagles claimed all three points in South London – despite Ollie Watkins opening to scoring on 5 minutes – thanks to a brace from former winger and club talisman Wilfried Zaha and another goal from Jean-Philippe Mateta. Interestingly, Villa still had Steven Gerrard in the dugout at the time.

The Claret and Blue enacted their revenge seven months later when they ran out 1-0 victors at home thanks to a Joachim Anderson own goal on 27 minutes. Patrick Vieira would be sacked just 13 days later.

Aston Villa vs Crystal Palace: What is Villa's biggest win?

Despite the 50 games that followed, Villa's biggest win against Palace came back in their first encounter 110 years ago.

It was an FA Cup 3rd round tie, played at Villa Park in front of 44,000 fans who saw the Villans run riot and put five past their opponents to no reply.

The goals came courtesy of braces from Harold Halse and Clem Stephenson and a single effort from Joe Bache.

The Lions would rack up another big scoreline, 4-3, in their next game against the Eagles, but they have yet to score five or more against the South Londoners since.

Aston Villa vs Crystal Palace: What is Palace's biggest win?

While still a little while ago, Palace's biggest win over the West Midlands side is a lot more recent than Villa's. It came in the fourth round of the League Cup in 1994 at Selhurst Park.

Despite Villa opening the scoring in the 33rd minute thanks to a goal from Damian Atkinson, the home side rallied and put four past their opponents in the second half thanks to braces from Chris Armstrong and Gareth Southgate – yes, that Gareth Southgate.

Aston Villa vs Crystal Palace: What are the recent results?

Despite Villa's overall dominance in this fixture – especially in the past – the last few years of it have been anything but predictable.

The last five games have seen both sides come away with two wins and one draw. Last season saw both teams come away with three points out of six, and the season before that saw Villa win away while Palace was able to snatch a point at Villa Park.

This fixture might have started as an incredibly one-sided one, but – luckily for us – it certainly isn't anymore.

Aston Villa vs Crystal Palace: When is it?

Aston Villa host Crystal Palace on Saturday 16th September at 3pm British Summer Time. As big as these two clubs are, it's not traditionally one of the Premier League's 'big' fixtures.

That, however, doesn't mean it isn't an exciting one.

We've already seen how close these two sides are at the moment, and with the way they've started their respective league campaigns, they'll both be desperate to use this game to kick on.

In Villa's case, they have spent all summer recruiting major names from across the continent in a bid to support new boss Unai Emery as he looks to establish the club as a genuine contender for those Champions League places among the 'big six'.

The likes of Pau Torres, Moussa Diaby, Youri Tielemans and Nicolo Zaniolo will also be looking to prove themselves after the international break.

On the other hand, Palace will be looking to pick up more points early on in the season as they aim to better their 11th-placed finish last year. Roy Hodgson will also be looking to prove that he's still got it after all these years, and with his track record at the club, who would bet against him?

Whatever happens, if the last couple of years are anything to go by, picking a winner will be incredibly difficult – which can only be a good thing for the neutral.

ZC postpones domestic cricket amid cash shortage

The board was only able to pay 50% of November salaries and also indicated December salaries would be delayed

Zimbabwe Cricket has postponed domestic cricket for the rest of 2017, in order to upgrade facilities ahead of next year’s World Cup qualifiers and allow themselves breathing room to deal with another cash crunch, which will cause salary delays over the Christmas season. An internal memo, seen by ESPNcricinfo, was sent to all ZC staff on December 6, and stated that due to “adverse prevailing financial circumstances,” ZC was only able to pay 50% of November salaries and also indicated December salaries would not be paid at all. “While ZC is currently making all efforts to secure funding for December this cannot be guaranteed. Accordingly it is highly likely that staff will receive their December salaries in mid-January 2018,” the memo read. Some ZC staff have also been asked to work over their end-of-year break to ensure facilities are ready for the World Cup qualifiers in March. ZC are upgrading five venues – Harare Sports Club, Old Hararians, Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo Athletic Club and Kwekwe Sports Club – for the tournament itself, and Takashinga Cricket Club and Old Mutual Heath Streak Academy as practice venues. Their tasks include rescarifying outfields and planting new grass to painting, plumbing, erecting temporary structures and sprucing up change-rooms and media centres. An ICC team will arrive in Zimbabwe on Monday to inspect facilities, resulting in all grounds being out of action until at least January 20, 2018. Two Logan Cup matches and six List A matches, due to be played between December 10 and 18 have been postponed, and ZC are yet to confirm new dates. Six of those eight matches were scheduled to be played at grounds that will be used for the World Cup Qualifiers.Still, with ZC only needing two venues per round of domestic matches – the set-up comprises five teams and only four can play at a time – it may have been possible to move games around, but ZC will also save money by postponing them.Several sources have indicated that ZC were struggling to cover the costs of domestic games including daily allowances and kit management. In one example, players from the Mountaineers team were wearing three different colours at a List A game because their clothing was being held with the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority, awaiting customs clearance, which ZC had yet to pay. This is the second time ZC has had a salary delay in recent months. When West Indies toured in October, salaries were only partly paid when they were due at the end of the month, and later paid in full. Match fees from the Sri Lanka series, played in July last year, have also not yet been paid despite players being assured they would receive it in September. At the time, ZC admitted “strained cash flows,” exacerbated by hosting West Indies. ZC also revealed they will look to limit home Tests in future, in order to be more financially sustainable. ZC are planning to prepare a monthly cash-flow plan which includes a salary pot. However, in an uncertain economic climate in Zimbabwe – even after Robert Mugabe’s resignation – it will take creative solutions to get ZC in the black. In the short term, the board will receive their ICC distribution amount in January, which they hope to use to clear the outstanding salaries. They will also receive US$1 million for hosting the World Cup qualifiers but that money will go towards stadium upgrades. That makes Zimbabwe’s qualification for the World Cup even more vital – as they will receive a hefty participation fee. Zimbabwe, currently ranked 11th on the ODI rankings, did not automatically qualify for the World Cup. Instead, they will attempt to qualify through a ten-team tournament, which also includes West Indies and Afghanistan (both ranked above Zimbabwe), Netherlands and Ireland in March. The top two teams will play in the 2019 World Cup.
