England open campaign with big win as Bangladesh roll over for 97

Joshua Boyden rattled the defending champions by taking 4 for 16, before England chased down the low total inside 26 overs

Bangladesh crashed and burned in their opening game of the Under-19 World Cup, getting bowled out for 97, as England began their campaign with a seven-wicket win over the defending champions in Basseterre’s Warner Park.Bangladesh were rattled by England’s left-arm seamer Joshua Boyden, who effected four caught-behind dismissals after Bangladesh opted to bat first. He finished with 4 for 16 from his nine overs that also included four maidens.Related

Memories of 2020 drive undercooked but determined Bangladesh

Boyden, who plays for Lancashire 2nd XI, took the new ball and in the third over of his spell struck with a ball angling across opener Mahfijul Islam as he tried to drive away from his body. Next over, the other Bangladesh opener, Ariful Islam, was sent back in similar fashion, once again pocketed by wicketkeeper Alex Horton. From the opposite end, right-arm seamer James Sales picked off Prantik Nawrose Nabil with another catch to the keeper, and when a direct-hit from William Luxton had wicketkeeper-batter Md Fahim packing for 1, Bangladesh were reeling at 8 for 4.Bangladesh promoted Ashiqur Zaman up the order to up the scoring, but his inexperience with the bat showed when he was out for 9 trying to pull a Thomas Aspinwall ball that got big on him. With England well and truly on top, Bangladesh’s No. 4 Aich Mollah (13) tried to start a rebuilding process alongside Abdullah Al Mamun. But Mollah fell to Fateh Singh’s left-arm spin when his cut behind point went straight to gully.Boyden, returning for a new spell, then brought the wicketkeeper back into play, in the 23rd over, by getting a length ball to nip across left-hander Mamun’s bat, taking a faint edge to Horton. Next over, SM Meherob top-edged a short ball from Aspinwall to Horton for his fifth catch and the score was 51 for 8.Bangladesh captain and bowling allrounder Rakibul Hasan was soon dismissed off the first ball he faed when a full delivery from Boydon angled across him, and the his aggressive-looking drive was edged to Horton.Bangladesh’s final pair, however, dug in to give the team some hope of a triple-digit score. Naimur Rohman made 11 and the No. 11 Ripon Mondol swung his bat around to crack five fours and a six to make 33. Their partnership of 46 runs pushed Bangladesh to 97 for 9 before Rohman pulled right-arm offspinner Tom Prest to a diving James Rew at midwicket.England’s unbeaten duo of William Luxton and James Rew walk back after the win•ICC via Getty

England’s openers were in no hurry to chase the target of 98 down, looking to settle in before opening their arms. In search of wickets, Rakibul rotated his bowling options to find that opening breakthrough, and it came in the ninth over from second-change bowler Mondol when opener George Thomas mistimed a pull to midwicket.Prest, the England captain, then walked in at No. 3 with the score 20 for 1, but he didn’t last long. After taking 15 balls to score four runs, he got tempted to cut one square with a half-tracker from Rakibul, but ended up getting a thick edge to wicketkeeper Mollah. With England at 26 for 2, and Bangladesh lifted following two quick wickets, there was still a chance for the defending champions to make a game of the contest despite the low target. But all those hopes for Bangladesh were dashed by the third-wicket stand between Jacob Bethell and Rew. Despite being in no rush to get his runs, the opener Bethell impressed with his strokes, cracking four fours and two sixes. He made 44 in 63 balls, and held one end up, exactly what England needed at the time. However, he was run out responding to a single from Rew.With England on 91 for 3 and needing only seven more to win, Luxton walked in at No. 5 and played a slog sweep over deep midwicket off his very first ball. Rew then knocked off a single, for his 26th run, to seal England’s win with 149 balls to spare.”That’s probably the perfect start,” Prest said after the game. “For our bowlers to get them out for under 100 was very good. In the end, a good toss to lose.”Boydon was really good doing that for us, good at swinging the ball, especially to left-handers. We fielded very well, we were fizzing around. Fielding has been a big focus of ours.””I think as a batting unit we didn’t do well,” Rakibul said. “We want to come back stronger next game with the batting. We had some good batters at the end and they showed great character. If our main batsmen score some runs, then we can surely come back stronger in the next match. Look, for us, two games remain. We need to win two games to cross the line and we need to play our best cricket.”

O jogo
PRIMEIRO TEMPO
CRB APOSTA NAS BOLAS PARADAS
Os primeiros 20 minutos poucas oportunidades de perigo para ambos os lados. Os lances mais agudos foram do CRB e sempre na bola parada. No início do jogo, Rafael Longuine bateu escanteio e quase marcou gol olímpico.

Gum aproveitou e empatou: 1 a 1.

SEGUNDO TEMPO

Harry Maguire waiting on Ten Hag sack decision before entering Man Utd contract talks

Erik ten Hag is pushing for a Manchester United player to leave the club given his contract situation, but he may wait to see what happens with the future of the Dutchman, according to a recent report. It has been a turbulent few weeks for the Red Devils, but they will now be hoping that three points and a strong second-half display against Brentford on Saturday can be the start of a turnaround in results and performances.

Man Utd transfer news

Obviously, the short-term focus around Old Trafford will be on upcoming fixtures as they try to build some momentum both domestically and in Europe. But the club’s hierarchy also have their eyes on future transfers, and this is irrelevant to what happens to Ten Hag in the future.

Last week, United were linked with a move for Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sane as he continues talks over a new deal with the German side. The German is known to the Premier League as he played for Manchester City, but now the Red Devils have their eye on bringing him back to the other side of Manchester.

United added two new centre-backs to their ranks during the summer, but the club looks keen to add to that department still. Indeed, it has been reported that the Red Devils remain interested in Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo.

The 25-year-old is seen as a key member of Barca’s team, and he is in talks over a new contract, but United are keeping an eye on the situation and could make an offer if talks don’t progress. The transfer stories don’t stop there for United and Ten Hag, as the Dutchman now appears to be looking to move one of his first team players on.

Man Utd star Ten Hag wants out waiting before entering contract talks

According to Football Insider, Manchester United defender Harry Maguire will wait until Erik ten Hag is sacked before making a decision about his future at the club. The England international is in the final year of his contract at Old Trafford, and as of yet, no talks have been held over extending his stay.

Ten Hag is said to be pushing for Maguire to leave the club, but the 31-year-old is in no rush to decide his future, as uncertainty over Ten Hag’s future as United boss continues. Maguire is keen to assess whether his role would change under a new manager, given his lack of game time this season.

The centre-back is currently out injured, but before suffering that injury against Aston Villa, he started just three Premier League games, keeping a clean sheet in the game at Villa Park with Jonny Evans. That came after he scored a last-minute equaliser against Porto in the Europa League a few days before.

Maguire still feels he has a role to play at Manchester United, but a decision may soon have to be made given his contract situation.

West Brom may soon need to ditch a star who earns more than Maja & Bartley

West Bromwich Albion fans are strapped in for another promotion-chasing season at the Hawthorns, as the well-respected Carlos Corberan aims to steer the Baggies to another finish near the top of the Championship table.

The West Midlands side clinched a playoff spot last season, but would ultimately come unstuck at the semi-final stage to eventual winners Southampton, with the aim now to avenge this disappointment and finally return to the Premier League at the end of this long and gruelling campaign.

It will be a tough ask, with the Baggies showing some chinks in their armour already with two Championship losses next to their name, but the passionate Spaniard on the sidelines will know he can rely on the likes of Kyle Bartley and Josh Maja to help his team in their ongoing promotion push.

Bartley and Maja's importance to West Brom

Whilst many of the West Brom old guard departed the club this summer for pastures new, Kyle Bartley stuck by his Championship employers and remains one of the first names on his manager’s team sheet for good reason.

Yet to miss a minute of action this season so far, the former Arsenal youth product turned accomplished second-tier defender is crucial to the dogged Baggies back four, having picked up five clean sheets from nine league games played as a titan-like presence.

Even when West Brom aren’t at the races, the determined 33-year-old still shines, with an impressive eight duels won away at Sheffield Wednesday as his team fell to a surprise 3-2 defeat.

Whilst Bartley tries to make Corberan’s men as staunch as possible defensively, Josh Maja has the opposite to do in attack, in trying to be the bright spark that clinches wins with goals finding the back of the net.

He has been just that for the West Midlands side so far this season, starting as he meant to go on with a hat-trick on the opening day against Queens Park Rangers, with a ridiculous seven strikes then picked up from seven before firing some unexpected blanks against Middlesbrough.

Both players will be key for Corberan’s men going forward as they strive to go one better than last season and shoot up to the Premier League, but find that their wages are actually lesser than one Baggies player currently, who has struggled for game-time in contrast.

West Brom winger Grady Diangana.

Diangana's wage at West Brom

According to Capology, West Brom winger Grady Diangana rakes in a hefty £20.3k-per-week wage for the 2024/25 campaign, which sees him earn more than both Bartley and Maja consequently.

The centre-back and the striker only take home a lesser £15k-per-week and £17k-per-week respectively, when weighed up next to Diangana’s healthier pay packet, despite being picked week in week out by their manager.

Going the other way, it’s been an extremely stop-start campaign so far for the Congolese forward, who is only averaging 32 minutes of action per league clash so far this season as his injury issues begin to pile up.

With the emergence of Karlan Grant down the left wing too, who has a goal next to his name this season as a resurgent presence, on top of the fact Mikey Johnston is also back at the Hawthorns, Diangana could find his minutes are infrequent even when he is back up to full speed.

The “unbelievable” West Brom number 11 – as he was once labelled as by Baggies teammate Jed Wallace – is capable of terrorising second-tier defences on his day, with 21 second-tier strikes on his career CV.

But, it does feel as if his powers are waning in the here and now, with Diangana now worth just £1.3m according to Football Transfers, when he once cost the West Midlands side an eye-watering £18m.

When back at full sharpness, he will be a useful body to have around the building for a promotion charge, but with his contract up next summer, his time with the Baggies could come to an end soon.

West Brom could axe star who earns more than Maja & Johnston combined

Carlos Corberan could look to move on this forgotten West Bromwich Albion man soon.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Now, having left in a bid to revive what has become an ailing career, the Spanish club have insisted they believe the 24-year-old can make a significant impact. They currently sit ninth in La Liga, and are just two points behind sixth-placed Mallorca; a sixth-placed finish would seal qualification to the Conference League.

  • WHAT FAJARDO SAID

Fajardo told : "Antony’s arrival is exciting. From the sporting management and the coaching staff, we understood that we had to improve the second line of attack. Antony is already with us, but we must not individualise any player. For the team to achieve its objectives, both Antony and the rest of the players will have to take a step forward and demonstrate on a daily basis, from the maximum involvement and talent, to meet the objective one more year."

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Per , Amorim is keen on adding a new goalkeeper to the United squad who can push Andre Onana for the No.1 spot between the sticks at Old Trafford. Onana, who has conceded 26 goals in 19 Premier League appearances this season, has shown improvement this season but is still prone to errors that have cost United valuable points. The Cameroonian was heavily criticised for his performance in the 3-2 loss against Nottingham Forest, in particular, as he let a tame Morgan Gibbs-White shot slip past him before inexplicably watching a soft header from Chris Wood into his net at the back post.

  • Getty Images Sport

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Red Devils do have Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayindir in their squad, however, Amorim does not consider him to be the ideal back-up option behind Onana. Bayindir's two costly mistakes led to United losing 4-3 to Tottenham in the quarter-finals of the League Cup. Since joining the club in 2023, the Turkey international has appeared in just eight matches across all competitions and has yet to feature in the Premier League.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Amorim has endured a tough start to his journey in England and has admitted that United are at risk of being drawn into a relegation battle. Along with a new goalkeeper, the former Sporting CP manager would also like to increase his options in midfield and upfront in the next two transfer windows, but United must sell before they can buy due to current profit and sustainability rules.

Ankeet Chavan cleared to resume playing after spot-fixing ban is reduced to seven years

Mumbai-based left-arm spinner Ankeet Chavan has been cleared by the BCCI to resume playing professional cricket after he received a revocation letter from the board that confirmed his ban – originally for life – had been reduced to seven years. In an email accessed by ESPNcricinfo, BCCI interim chief executive Hemang Amin confirmed that Chavan’s ban had effectively ended on September 13, 2020 based on an order received last month. The BCCI ombudsman, the email said, “has restricted the ban imposed on you from life ban to 7 years, with effect from 13 September 2013. In view of the order dated 3 May 2021, the ban imposed on you therefore ended on 13 September, 2020.”Related

While the ban in principle got over in September 2020, unlike Sreesanth, whose order for a similar term reduction arrived last August, Chavan had to wait till May 3, 2021 to get a copy of the order from the ombudsman. Chavan subsequently requested the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) to apply to the BCCI for a confirmation letter, a requisite for him to return to competitive cricket, which he received on June 15 from Amin.”The ban has been completely over as of September 2020,” Chavan told PTI on Tuesday, soon after the development. “I am open for whatever (comes) my way. I am really looking forward to getting on the ground as soon as possible.”Unfortunately, because of the pandemic (Covid-19) and the rains, the grounds would probably be closed but whichever opportunity I get to be back at the ground, I will be really eager for that.”In 2013, Chavan was given a life ban for his alleged involvement in the 2013 IPL corruption scandal. Chavan was one of three Rajasthan Royals players, along with Sreesanth and Ajit Chandila, to be chargesheeted by the Delhi Police at the time.Sreesanth had received his order before his ban ended last year, allowing him to participate in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy earlier this year.”I got (a) letter from (the) ombudsman that my ban has been reduced to seven years,” Chavan told PTI earlier this month. “The same as what was given to Sreesanth, but his order came before the end of the ban and mine after the completion of ban. Since I didn’t get that letter, I had to write to MCA requesting them to write to BCCI for that letter.”Chavan, 35, has played 18 first-class matches, 20 List A games and 26 T20s. His last representative match was against the Mumbai Indians in the 2013 IPL season.

Resurgent Mumbai Indians look to add more woes to Sunrisers Hyderabad's turbulent campaign

With six defeats in seven matches, Sunrisers will need to turn things around quickly if they are to make the playoffs

Himanshu Agrawal03-May-2021

With just one win so far, Sunrisers will need a mini-miracle to make the playoffs•BCCI

Big pictureFortunes couldn’t be any different for the Sunrisers Hyderabad and the Mumbai Indians at the moment. After suffering five defeats in six matches, the Sunrisers axed their captain David Warner, hoping a new leader would help change their fortunes. It brought them little respite, as Kane Williamson couldn’t prevent what would be a heavy defeat against the Rajasthan Royals. The Sunrisers’ batting has fumbled – their highest score remains 177, and on the six occasions that they have chased, their only successful attempt was getting to 121 set by the Punjab Kings. In their bowling ranks, the Sunrisers lost T Natarajan to injury, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar has struggled, and Khaleel Ahmed, Siddarth Kaul and Vijay Shankar have failed to provide control. Jason Holder, on the other hand, has played only once despite returning figures of 3 for 30. They have used as many as 21 players so far, and yet have an explosive opener in Jason Roy unused. Assuming the bottom-placed Sunrisers win all their remaining matches, the most they can get to is 16 points. Going by their performances so far, it would require a miracle for that to happen; and if it doesn’t, then it would be the first time since 2016 that they fail to make the playoffs.Mumbai Indians, on the other hand, seem to have rediscovered their lost form. For a side that had lost two in a row and hadn’t batted second in their first five matches, they came back brilliantly to chase down 172 and 219 to remind the others of their potential. Kieron Pollard was destructive against the Chennai Super Kings in Mumbai’s previous match, having hammered 87 off just 34 deliveries, and the Sunrisers will need no reminder that he had also struck an unbeaten 35 from 22 balls to help Mumbai defend 151 against them earlier this season. What Mumbai will only want more of though is runs from Hardik Pandya, who is playing his second consecutive IPL season as a batter only. He has struggled to time the ball and clear the ropes, though that could be down to the slow and low Chennai pitch where Mumbai played five games. But though Pandya has underperformed while averaging only 8.67, he remains too good a batter to be looked beyond so soon.In the newsThere have been four matches played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi so far this season, and the scores batting first read: 171, 171, 218 and 220. That gets the average to 195, the highest among the four venues used. A combination of the pitch neither aiding swing nor spin and the ground’s shorter boundaries have helped the batters dominate. In fact, three of those totals have been hunted down successfully – two of them by Mumbai – with the only instance of the team batting first winning a game coming when the Royals defended 220 against… well, the Sunrisers. That suggests it is a win-toss-and-bowl-first pitch, but only if the Sunrisers’ out-of-form line-up can rise out of their slump will Mumbai be in any real danger of coming second on the night.Kieron Pollard hammered a 17-ball half-century against the Chennai Super Kings•BCCI/IPL

Likely XIsMohammad Nabi was kept waiting to attack the Royals’ left-handers until Williamson realised they may never arrive before finally bowling him. To the Sunrisers’ dismay, Nabi ended up conceding 21 in what would turn out to be his only over of the day. Dropping him may be harsh, but the Sunrisers may prefer Holder over him to round off their foreigners’ quota, especially with Rashid Khan and Jonny Bairstow looking good, and Williamson being the captain.Sunrisers Hyderabad: 1 Manish Pandey, 2 Jonny Bairstow (wk), 3 Kane Williamson (capt), 4 Kedar Jadhav, 5 Abdul Samad, 6 Vijay Shankar, 7 Jason Holder, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Khaleel Ahmed, 11 Sandeep SharmaAlthough Jimmy Neesham departed for a first-ball duck against the Super Kings, he had no option but to attack in that situation. His two overs also cost 26, but it would be too cruel to drop him after just one bad day, and so Mumbai may pick the same XI that beat the Super Kings in a thriller.Mumbai Indians: 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Suryakumar Yadav, 4 Krunal Pandya, 5 Kieron Pollard, 6 Hardik Pandya, 7 Jimmy Neesham, 8 Rahul Chahar, 9 Dhawal Kulkarni, 10 Jasprit Bumrah, 11 Trent BoultStrategy punt The Sunrisers will hope Rashid Khan and Khaleel Ahmed can maintain their impressive record against Pollard in the IPL. While Pollard has scored at a strike rate of just 64.9 against Khan – he has merely 24 off 37 balls against him across nine innings – Ahmed too has kept him quiet at a strike rate of only 80. Incidentally, both take the ball away from the big-hitting Pollard, who has been dismissed once each by the two. In the IPL, Williamson has strikes rates of just 75, 100, 110 and 115 against Krunal Pandya, Rahul Chahar, Dhawal Kulkarni and Jasprit Bumrah, respectively. The only frontline Mumbai bowler against whom Williamson has an impressive scoring rate is, not surprisingly, his national side team-mate Trent Boult, whom he hits at 157. Kedar Jadhav, too, doesn’t enjoy facing Kulkarni, Chahar and Krunal, having a sub-80 strike rate against them all. Even against Bumrah, Jadhav manages to go at only 110.8. If Mumbai can maintain the same pace against the Sunrisers’ Nos. 3 and 4, then those who follow may further feel the heat in an already tough campaign.Stats that matter With Warner dropped, the Sunrisers may choose to go with Jason Roy as Bairstow’s opening partner. The duo has batted together five times in T20Is, with those 267 runs having come at an impressive average of 53.40 and a staggering run rate of 10.20. And even as an opening pair in ODIs, Bairstow and Roy have cracked 2663 runs at 7.04 runs an over, including 13 century and nine half-century stands. Though that would mean a fourth different opening combination for them this season, that might just be the tonic the Sunrisers need to keep their playoffs hopes alive. Pollard cracked eight sixes in his knock of 87 against the Super Kings, and in a piece of bad news for the Sunrisers, he has hammered 18 maximums against them in seven innings since the 2018 IPL. But to counter him, they have Bairstow, who has smashed 15 sixes this season, just one behind the leading KL Rahul.
