Aston Villa preparing Matheus Cunha offer

Aston Villa are preparing a January offer for Atletico Madrid forward Matheus Cunha, according to Goal.

The Lowdown: New forward wanted

It could well be a busy first transfer window for Unai Emery at Villa Park, with NSWE promising him a ‘huge’ 2023 budget.

A new A-list forward is on the agenda, with a defender also thought to be of interest over the coming weeks to possibly replace Tyrone Mings.

Hailed as a  “magician” by his former club RB Leipzig, Cunha could well be on the way to England, with Villa seemingly in the race for his services.

The Latest: Cunha update

Villa have been linked with a move for Cunha in recent weeks, and Goal shared what they know on Saturday morning.

Their headline claimed that Villa and Wolves are preparing January offers and the report added that they have been in contact with the player’s representatives.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/aston-villa-latest-updates-5/” title=”Aston Villa latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Look elsewhere?

Cunha hasn’t exactly been prolific in Spain, scoring just seven times in 54 appearances for Atletico after making the move from Hertha Berlin last year.

Emery seems to be after a forward who can help take Villa to the next level, so you could argue that the 23-year-old wouldn’t be an upgrade on Danny Ings or Ollie Watkins at this moment in time, with those two having scored nine goals between them in 32 combined appearances this season..

Cunha’s team-mate Joao Felix is also of interest to Villa and has a far better record in front of goal at Atletico, so that may well be a wiser move for NSWE and Johan Lange to pursue.

Celtic interested in Ivan Fresneda

Celtic are thought to be one of a number of clubs keen on signing Real Valladolid defender Ivan Fresneda.

The Lowdown: Fresneda profiled

Fresneda is just 18 years of age and doesn’t have too much first-team experience under his belt, making just nine senior appearances for his current employers.

The right-back is valued at €1m by Transfermarkt but has a €30m release clause in his contract. The Spaniard’s deal with Real Valladolid runs until 2025, and it looks as if the Hoops are eyeing a potential move.

The Latest: Transfer update

One Spanish outlet shared a transfer update regarding Fresneda in the last 48 hours.

They claimed that Celtic are one of eight clubs across Europe who could be willing to make an offer for the teenager’s services.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/key-latest-celtic-updates-9/” title=”Key latest Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: Unlikely?

The Hoops recently bolstered their right-back ranks by landing Alistair Johnston from CF Montreal, so a move for Fresneda seems unlikely.

He could also command a club-record fee, which currently stands at €10.3m for Odsonne Edouard, given his €30m release clause and the likes of big European clubs Arsenal, AC Milan and Juventus showing an interest in the teenager.

It could be a name to keep an eye on, however, Ange Postecoglou could be looking at other areas of the pitch after landing Johnston.

Palace: Ayew redeemed himself for Ghana

Jordan Ayew is certainly a man who splits opinion among Crystal Palace fans but the experienced forward won the hearts of Ghana supporters on Monday as he produced a superb display in their win over South Korea at the World Cup.

The 31-year-old struggled as a substitute in the Black Stars’ 3-2 defeat against Portugal in their World Cup opener but was trusted with a start by manager Otto Addo for their vital game against South Korea this week.

He redeemed himself by playing a huge part in their 3-2 victory yesterday, which likely sets up a winner-takes-all game against 2010 rivals Uruguay in their final group fixture later this week.

As per SofaScore, Ayew would earn a strong 6.9/10 rating for his performance in Qatar, as he was instrumental in Ghana taking a 2-0 lead.

First, his beautifully-flighted free-kick would cause chaos in the South Korea box, allowing Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu to fire home the opener.

He then produced a similarly brilliant cross for Mohammed Kudus to head home the second, so it was no surprise to see Ghanaian journalist Owuraku Ampofo describe his first-half performance as a “masterclass.”

During his time on the pitch, the former Aston Villa man would register two key passes, an 88% pass success rate and two crosses, all of which were an improvement on his performances in the Premier League this season, where he has averaged one key pass, an 83.4% pass success rate and 0.2 crosses per game.

The attacker, who earns £32.5k-per-week at Selhurst Park, would also play a big part from a defensive perspective, as he registered three tackles, one clearance and one interception, which again was an increase on his Premier League average of 2.2 tackles, 0.9 clearances and 0.2 interceptions per game.

Patrick Vieira will certainly hope that the forward can replicate performances like this when top-flight football in England resumes after Christmas, as Ayew has been largely disappointing for the Eagles so far this campaign, with no goals and just one assist to his name.

Therefore, it seems clear that Ayew was crucial to Ghana’s important win that gives them a real chance of securing qualification to the knockout stages, and he certainly redeemed himself in the eyes of fans after his disappointing cameo against Portugal last week.

Everton player ratings vs Bournemouth

A much-changed Everton side slumped to a 4-1 defeat at Premier League rivals Bournemouth on Tuesday night, in the process being dumped out of the Carabao Cup.

Goals from Jamal Lowe, Junior Stanislas, Emiliano Marcondes and Jaidon Anthony were more than enough against the lacklustre visitors, who got themselves a consolation in the second half through Demarai Gray to make it 2-1 at the time.

Either way, nobody in a blue shirt really staked a claim to get more minutes in Frank Lampard’s first-choice XI. Using statistical experts SofaScore, The Transfer Tavern have analysed who the three worst outfield performers (to have played at least 45 minutes) were for Everton on the night:

Tom Davies (6.5)

Given that he played the full 90 minutes ahead of Anthony Gordon, Davies ranks as the Toffees’ third-worst outfield performer with a 6.5 overall rating.

The midfielder lost out on two of his duels and failed to record a shot on target, missing a big chance to get his name on the scoresheet.

He also made no dribbles, clearances or key passes and lost possession of the ball 12 times, the joint-fourth most in the squad, and the 24-year-old will likely lose his place to Amadou Onana or Idrissa Gueye at the weekend.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-8/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Michael Keane (6.1)

With a mere 6.1 rating, Keane was the Merseyside club’s second-worst outfield player on the night.

The defender lost three duels and also made no interceptions, getting dribbled past once and losing possession 15 times, the second-most out of his Toffees team-mates.

The trusted centre-back pairing of Conor Coady and James Tarkowski is likely to return at the weekend, with some reports that Keane could even leave on loan in the January transfer window.

Nathan Patterson (5.6)

Patterson was rated as the Blues’ worst performer with a 5.6 score.

After recently returning from injury, the young Scotsman did not have the best of games last night, losing five of his duels and recording no dribbles, clearances, key passes or accurate crosses.

He gave the ball away more than any other Everton player with 17 losses of possession, and crucially made an error which led directly to a Bournemouth goal.

This performance shows that Patterson is still learning his trade, so Lampard may stick with trusted captain Seamus Coleman at right-back over the weekend.

Newcastle: Diallo could be Murphy upgrade

Saudi Arabian consortium PIF completed their takeover of Newcastle United in October of last year and have spent the last 12 months reshaping the club, on and off the pitch.

They have committed funds to improve the structure behind the scenes, by appointing sporting director Dan Ashworth and manager Eddie Howe, and have not been afraid to dip into the transfer market to bolster the squad.

In their first window in charge, back in January, PIF brought in Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn and Chris Wood on permanent deals.

They then allowed Ashworth to splash the cash in the summer by signing Sven Botman, Matt Targett, Alexander Isak and Nick Pope permanently.

The eight new additions, nine if you include the short-term signing of Loris Karius, have allowed the Magpies to slowly move on some of their previously underperforming players.

Ciaran Clark, Jeff Hendrick, Matt Ritchie, and Jamaal Lascelles have all either been moved on or fallen down the pecking order since the start of the year.

However, the club are yet to improve their options out wide and this has left them with Jacob Murphy playing regularly in the Premier League this term.

The winger has played ten matches in the division, starting three times, and has averaged an underwhelming SofaScore rating of 6.64, with one goal and zero assists to his name.

This comes after he managed one goal and two assists in 33 appearances in the top-flight for Newcastle last season, which suggested – at the time – that he was not good enough to feature regularly at this level due to the lack of contributions in the final third.

Howe could, however, unearth an upgrade on the former Norwich man without needing Ashworth to make a big-money signing in January. He could look to the academy and attempt to bring through one of the talented young players in the youth squad.

One player who could fall into that category is recent U21 signing Amadou Diallo, who the Magpies have signed on a free transfer after he left West Ham United at the end of last season.

Academy director Steve Harper explained why the club have brought him in, saying: “He has performed well over his extended trial period and his signing gives us increased options in wide areas in the under-21 group.”

Journalist Jacob Steinberg claimed that he was “highly rated” at West Ham and revealed that Chelsea were looking at him as a potential signing for their academy.

The 19-year-old wizard scored three goals in seven games for England at U17 level and found the back of the net five times, whilst assisting two, in 25 Premier League 2 outings for the Hammers.

FourFourTwo previously hailed the youngster in 2019, Tweeting: “The two-footed Diallo is a keen dribbler with a dangerous shot, and is one to watch very closely indeed.”

This suggests that the winger is direct and willing to get a shot off, which is backed up by his statistics for club and country, and he could be an upgrade on Murphy in the future by offering more of a goal threat from out wide.

It is now down to him to impress enough in the U21s to tempt Howe into calling him up to the first-team to give him the chance to prove himself at senior level.

Rangers: German sides have eyed Kent

A worrying Glasgow Rangers transfer claim has emerged on Ryan Kent’s future at Ibrox ahead of the January transfer window…

What’s the talk?

Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Bundesliga outfits have shown an interest in the Light Blues midfielder and predicted that he will receive offers to leave Glasgow in 2023.

The attacker is out of contract at the end of the season and will be able to put pen to paper on a pre-contract agreement with a foreign side in January.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “I remember there was a couple of good clubs in Germany that I was told were interested in signing him.

“So, you would imagine he’s going to get some really good proposals in the coming months as we get towards January.”

Nightmare for Ross Wilson

The Gers sporting director is currently heading for a nightmare scenario with Kent as losing him for nothing would be a major blow to the club, from a financial and footballing perspective.

In terms of the finances, the winger leaving on a free transfer would stop Rangers from recouping any money for his services. It was previously reported, by Football Insider, that the player has a £20m release clause and that the club rejected a bid in the region of £10m from Premier League side Leeds United in the past.

These figures illustrate the kind of money the Light Blues would be missing out on if Kent were to leave for nothing at the end of 2022/23, which is why it would be a disaster from a financial sense.

From a footballing point of view, losing the Englishman would be a gigantic blow to Giovanni van Bronckhorst. The forward has been a crucial player on the pitch at Ibrox for a number of years and that has not changed this season.

Kent has scored once and provided four assists in seven Premiership matches this term, taking his tally to 24 goals and 29 assists in 108 games in the competition.

He also caught the eye in Europe last season as he scored once and set up five in 13 Europa League outings as Rangers made their way to the final, only to lose to Eintracht Frankfurt.

The winger, who was once described as “unplayable” at his best by journalist Andrew Dickson, has proven that he is a constant threat out wide with his creativity, regularly delivering assists for his teammates, and that is why his exit would leave a big hole in van Bronckhorst’s squad.

Therefore, Wilson allowing his contract to run down this far and being unable to agree a new deal for him as it stands, means that the sporting director is heading for a nightmare with German clubs potentially eyeing up a swoop in 2023.

West Ham eyeing up exciting Mudryk move

West Ham are one of a number of Premier League clubs interested in signing Shakhtar Donetsk star Mykhaylo Mudryk, according to a new report.

The Lowdown: Mudryk one to watch

The 21-year-old is emerging as arguably one of Europe’s hottest young properties, catching the eye with his performances for Shakhtar and Ukraine.

Mudryk has already scored and assisted twice apiece in as many Champions League games this season, not to mention being known as the ‘Ukrainian Neymar’, which says plenty about his abilities on the ball.

There is a long queue for the winger’s signature and it seems inevitable that he will leave Shakhtar in the near future.

The Latest: West Ham linked with move

According to 90min, West Ham are one of the teams keen on acquiring Mudryk’s signature but they are far from alone in expressing an interest.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Brentford, Brighton, Everton, Leeds United, Newcastle United and Wolves are all mentioned as potential suitors, too, with all of them sending scouts to watch the Ukraine international take on Scotland this week.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates-2/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Sign him up, Hammers

It’s certainly not going to be easy to sign Mudryk, given his increasingly growing reputation, but he could be an outstanding addition, not to mention a signing of huge intent.

The youngster is someone who has the ability to be a future world-class footballer and he already has six caps to his name for Ukraine, wreaking havoc with his technical ability in a left-sided midfield role.

Mudryk is someone who could bring a spark to West Ham after a clear dip under David Moyes – whether or not a January move is possible remains to be seen, but if not, signing him next summer would be the next best thing.

What Happens During A Player Transfer?

Look at the calendar and you will see a transfer window will soon be open, no matter what time of year it is. When summer comes to an end and the season starts, the January transfer window is only months away.

Transfer talk is never-ending. Throughout the year the players, the press, or the powerful football agents fuel speculation about who will go where and for how much when it all kicks off again. The supporters are lost in a fog of rumours, worrying star players are going to be snapped up or getting their hopes up about a new signing.

But what actually happens during a football transfer? Every time a player makes a move it is a unique situation but follows a familiar pattern, and there are a few legal hoops to jump through. Let us take a closer look at football transfers and find out what happens during a transfer window.

Transfer Talk Begins

You can find plenty of speculation about player transfers in papers or published online every day. It fills column inches on the back pages and helps keep websites buzzing with content, but it is mostly wishful thinking. There is a small amount of transfer talk that can ignite a transfer though.

Like a needle in a haystack, there is a little truth hidden in all the rumours. The news begins to leak about a potential transfer early on. Scouts go to watch a game, or family members speak of a player’s desire to move forward or join a specific club. These are often the earliest sign of an imminent transfer.

It’s around this time that the odds come out and bets can be made, though check out betting reviews first on sites like OnlineCasinos before having a flutter.

The Unofficial Approach

Before clubs start talking and things become official, low-key contact is usually made. Clubs and players must be careful. The club that is buying a player needs to take extra care to avoid accusations of ‘tapping up’.

There is not much point in trying to buy a player who is happy where he is, and his club are happy to have him. Big cash offers can tempt both parties into a transfer but in most cases a settled player stays settled. When a club is in the market for a player, agents can act as a middleman.

Contact will be made between a club and a player through one or more third parties. This may involve the player’s family, agent, or another representative. If the club and the player are keen on a deal, things will be made official and the two football clubs will begin official negotiations.

Making the Deal

Not every player gets heavily involved in the negotiation phase of a football transfer. Some do, but most will leave it up to their agent to get them the best deal possible. That is the football agent’s job after all.

The agent will negotiate the terms of the contract with the new club, and make sure the selling club is honouring the terms of their existing deal. Many players have clauses in their contract to help facilitate their next move, including setting transfer values to make sure they are not priced out of a transfer.

Some players may receive a percentage of the transfer value as part of their deal. This is common with young players who show exciting potential and sign with a club to help them develop.

Clubs try to negotiate quickly; the selling club will need to do some more business to replace their outgoing star. Player demands and expectations are the main reasons for deals stalling, but once they are happy everyone can dot the i’s, cross the t’s, and make an announcement to the media. They also need to make things official with their leagues and register the player with his new club.

The Transfer Becomes Official

Every football transfer must be authorised by the buying team’s league to become official. For transfers to premier league clubs, all the documents related to the transfer must be submitted to the Premier League headquarters by midnight on deadline day.

Some transfers miss the deadline by minutes, and do not go through despite everyone involved reaching an agreement. The last moments of deadline day are always filled with a little bit of drama. There have been years when a player has driven to the gates of a club expecting to sign terms, only for the deal to fall through.

Most of the deals get done far ahead of the deadline, with high-profile deals orchestrated to go through at the opening of a window, not the closing of one. When a deal is agreed between the player and the two clubs, and everyone is happy, you can expect a well-timed, well-publicised transfer. This puts everyone’s name in the papers in a positive way, including the names of some agents.

Powerful football agents have emerged in the last decade or so and have gotten the reputation of football mercenaries. They control the destinies of some of the world’s top players and have the ability to force through transfers. Simply by implying that a player could make a switch they can often increase a player’s wages and get other incentives.

Agents may take 10-20% of the value of the deal, plus other bonuses, and incentives. With a roster of talented clients, a football super-agent can millions a year without ever kicking a ball.

Some players never make a transfer and never go through this process. Paul Scholes would negotiate his contracts at Manchester United with an accountant, not an agent. Steven Gerrard never left Liverpool but having a football agent nearly brought a move to Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea in 2005. He ended up signing a new contract and becoming one of the highest-paid players in the Premier League.

Switching clubs can make players a lot of money through their careers, and some footballers will make two or three big money moves in their career and reap the benefits. They can also get themselves some extra trophies to put in their cabinets.

Celtic must sanction Liam Shaw exit

Celtic have not been shy when it comes to loaning players out of the Parkhead club in recent years.

For example, this current summer transfer window has seen the likes of Osaze Urhoghide, Adam Montgomery, Ismaila Soro, Vasilis Barkas and Liam Scales head out to other clubs on temporary loan deals.

Another player, who has already been out on loan, currently in Ange Postecoglou’s squad that we think should be on his way out of the club, either on another loan deal or on a permanent basis is Liam Shaw.

Back in February 2021, Celta signed the 21-year-old on a pre-contract from Sheffield Wednesday before he joined up with the Hoops in the following summer window.

After making just two senior appearances for the Bhoys, the midfielder found himself getting moved out in the previous January transfer window to have a loan spell with fellow SPFL side Motherwell.

The first of those two senior appearances saw him play 65 minutes of action in Celtic’s 3-2 win over Real Betis in the Europa League.

His performance in that game ultimately earned him a match rating of 6/10 from Football.Scotland, who said that he “ran about a lot but lacked the quality to retain possession at times.”

Having started just two of the seven league games he appeared in during his time with Motherwell, this suggests that he didn’t impress enough to become a regular starter there.

When he did manage to get on the pitch, his performances earned him an underwhelming overall season rating of 6.33/10 from WhoScored, making him one of the lowest-rated players to feature for the club.

Therefore, this could have severely impacted his chances of becoming a regular figure at Celtic this season.

In fact, the Englishman has not made an appearance in the league for the Hoops yet.

Despite being labelled as a player that has “enormous potential” by Mike Trusson, it’s safe to say that Shaw’s time in Scotland has not been particularly successful yet as he’s shown that he is not yet good enough to be a part of Postecoglou’s squad.

With all of that in mind, if Celtic want to keep the faith in him and hope he can develop elsewhere, they should look to loan the £4k-per-week midfielder out again.

Or, if they feel he doesn’t have what it takes to be good enough to play for the league champions, they should cut him off and see if they can move him on permanently.

Either way, Postecoglou needs to sanction a move for him somewhere if he isn’t likely to be playing regularly.

Liverpool target Chukwuemeka rejects deal

Liverpool target and Aston Villa youngster Carney Chukwuemeka has rejected a new deal and shown ‘no sign’ of extending his stay in the Midlands.

The Lowdown: Liverpool keen on Chukwuemeka

The 18-year-old is an extremely talented young prospect at Villa Park, already being handed 16 first-team appearances and being described as a ‘fantastic’ player by Steven Gerrard.

Liverpool have been linked with a move for Chukwuemeka this summer as Jurgen Klopp potentially eyes up midfield additions, with Neil Jones reporting the Villa gem is ‘highly thought of’ at Anfield.

The Englishman’s current Villa deal expires at the end of next season, meaning he could leave for a compensation fee in 2023 if he doesn’t extend his stay before then.

The Latest: Youngster rejects deal, ‘no sign’ he’ll stay

According to The Telegraph‘s Mike McGrath on Twitter, Chukwuemeka has turned down a new contract offer at Villa and now looks set to move:

“Carney Chukwuemeka has rejected #AVFC contract extension and no sign of agreement. He can seal pre-contract with another club in January and leave for around £400,000 next summer, which many would explore in his situation. Clubs expected to bid before that.”

[freshpress-quiz id=“398089″]

The Verdict: Part of the Reds rebuild?

At some point, Klopp is going to have to rebuild his midfield at Liverpool, considering James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Thiago are now all in their 30s, while Fabinho and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are 29 later this year.

[freshpress-poll id=“399042″]

Jude Bellingham could be the big signing who comes in next summer but Chukwuemeka may be one for the here and now, coming in as a squad player and maturing into a regular over time alongside the likes of Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho.

The Villa man would surely jump at the opportunity to play for arguably one of the two best sides in world football, whether that be arriving now or next year after a pre-contract agreement is signed in January.

Either way, Chukwuemeka certainly has the potential to be an exciting addition, considering he has just won the Under-19s Euros with England and was named in the Team of the Tournament.
