Chelsea make "formal" bid to sign "exciting" £65m forward for Maresca

Chelsea have now made a formal bid as they attempt to get a potentially “exciting signing” over the line by January deadline day, with Enzo Maresca’s side very much in the market for a fresh attacking option.

Enzo Maresca coy on Chelsea transfer plans for January

The west Londoners recently recalled Trevoh Chalobah from his loan spell at Crystal Palace, seemingly putting an end to their search for a centre-back this window, while Maresca has remained coy over whether Chelsea will make a new signing before February 3rd.

The Italian has refused to rule out a potential incoming over the coming days, but appears relaxed about the situation overall – amid reports that a host of his squad members could depart Stamford Bridge.

“Listen, the club, the sporting directors, we pay attention if something can happen,” said Maresca on January transfers.

“But at the moment, as you said, 10 days to go and we haven’t done nothing. We called back Trev [Chalobah] and we will see in the next 10 days if something is going to happen.”

Lazio are in talks to sign Cesare Casadei, prompting noise of a Chelsea swoop for Hellas Verona midfielder Reda Belahyane, while Renato Veiga is rumoured to be on his way to Juventus on loan until the end of the season (Fabrizio Romano).

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Carney Chukwuemeka, Christopher Nkunku and Ben Chilwell are also attracting rumoured interest ahead of the January deadline, and if their possible transfers come to fruition, Maresca could be left short in some areas.

Mykhailo Mudryk faces a lengthy ban after failing a recent drugs test as well, with Bayern Munich’s interest in Nkunku reportedly motivating Chelsea to target fresh forward options this month.

One of their top targets, according to credible media sources, is Man United winger Alejandro Garnacho.

Chelsea make "formal" bid to sign Garnacho from Man United

According to South American journalist Uriel Ligt, Chelsea have now made a “formal” bid for Garnacho, as negotiations begin to intensify.

This follows on from reports earlier this week that Chelsea were set to hold talks over Garnacho (The Telegraph), with Maresca’s side now putting an official proposal on the table as they look to prise the Argentine away from Old Trafford.

It is unclear just how much this bid is worth, but other media sources believe United want around £65 million for a player who’s been called a potentially “exciting signing” for Chelsea by members of the media (Matt Law).

Garnacho has racked up eight goals and five assists in all competitions for Ruben Amorim’s side so far this term. However, United’s PSR issues could force them to sell up this month.

Speaking to Fjortoft, De Bruyne said: "There is always a challenge, you know. I don’t know what’s going to happen next season. If teams come and then convince me that they have a nice sport project. I know I am obviously not the youngest anymore. I still think I am able to perform on the highest level. I don’t know what teams are interested or what they want to do. Whatever project [is] available – I am willing to listen. I love football – I love to play football and if a nice project comes and my family is also good with that, we will be able to make a decision."

When pressed on whether his career in England was over, De Bruyne replied: "I don’t know. Honestly I don’t know. The decision to leave has not been long. Nothing can be decided in one week in the football world. I haven’t seen my family since the decision. I have to speak to them and then I will see whichever team wants me. So I don’t know. I have no idea."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The British billionaire is ready to 'declare war' on United squad's wage bill to help save money and reports INEOS will adopt the same model as Chelsea. Ratcliffe wants to reduce weekly wages paid to players and instead focus more on performance-related bonuses. Under co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali, Chelsea have handed out long-term contracts, sometimes up to nine years, with a focus on incentives.

  • WHAT RATCLIFFE SAID

Ratcliffe has suggested there could be a wave of departures at Old Trafford this summer after he declared that some players are "not good enough". He said last week: "Some are not good enough and some probably are overpaid, but for us to mould the squad that we are fully responsible for, and accountable for, will take time. We've got this period of transformation where we move from the past to the future. There are some great players in the squad as we know, the captain is a fabulous footballer. We definitely need Bruno [Fernandes], he's a fantastic footballer."

    WHAT NEXT FOR MAN UTD?

United sit 13th in the Premier League and will only qualify for next season's Champions League if they win the Europa League this term. Failing to do so would have a big impact on the club's finances and could hinder their efforts to strengthen the squad in the summer.

Emery could finally axe Bailey by starting "electrifying" Aston Villa star

There have been some standout performers in the Premier League for Aston Villa this season. Unai Emery’s side have been slightly underwhelming, slipping to ninth in the top flight. With that being said, they have still had some players in fine form.

One of those has been Youri Tielemans, who has been a creative force. He has created seven big chances, the second most in the squad, and played 2.3 key passes per game, more than any other teammates, as per Sofascore. Ollie Watkins leads the way for goal involvements in the top flight for Villa, with seven.

However, there have been some poor performances too, with Leon Bailey someone who has disappointed.

Bailey’s stats this season

The Jamaican winger joined Villa from Bayer Leverkusen in August 2021 for £25m. He has had a mixed time of things in a Claret and Blue shirt so far, with 20 goals and 23 assists coming in 121 appearances for the club.

Last term, the winger was fantastic. He was a crucial part of Emery’s squad and played a big role in their fourth-place finish in the Premier League, which saw them qualify for the Champions League. Bailey scored and assisted 28 times in 52 games in all competitions.

However, he has been disappointing so far this season. In 15 appearances across the Premier League, Champions League and Carabao Cup, Bailey has just two assists to his name and is yet to find the back of the net.

There is also a clear drop-off in his underlying stats. As per Squawka, he is creating fewer chances, with 1.5 per game this term compared to 2.3 in 2023/24.

It has perhaps been a surprise to see the Jamaica international put in such limp performances. His direct nature is normally tough to handle for opposing defenders, and he loves to take players on in one-vs-one situations.

After seven top-flight starts this term, it remains to be seen how long Emery persists with the Villans number 31 in the starting 11. His patience may well wear thin if Bailey does not improve his performances.

In fact, there is arguably the perfect replacement waiting in the wings at Villa Park, and the Spaniard could turn to him as early as this weekend against Crystal Palace.

The Villa star who could replace Bailey

The player in question here is young winger Jaden Philogene. After leaving the club in 2023 for Hull City, the Villans activated Philogene’s buyback clause and resigned him for a reported £18m in the 2024 window.

The England under-21 international was superb for the Tigers last term. He played 32 times for the Yorkshire club, scoring 12 goals and grabbing six assists. That included a stunning rabona against Rotherham United. He also showed his versatility, playing on both the left and right wing.

Since returning to Villa Park, it has not necessarily been a smooth ride for the young winger. The Villans academy graduate has yet to score or assist this term, and has played 401 minutes over ten games so far.

Although it has been a tough start to his second stint at Villa Park, time is on his side. At just 22 years of age, and with little experience in the top flight, it seems like he needs time to develop. Given he has started in both the Champions League and Premier League against Manchester United, he is clearly trusted by Emery.

A start against Palace could be the perfect game for Philogene to build up his confidence. The Eagles are struggling this season, currently sitting in the relegation zone, one point from safety.

It seems to be the ideal game where he can perhaps get himself a goal or assist and gain a real boost of confidence. The “electrifying” star, as football scout Antonio Mango described him, could bully a Palace defence who have conceded 15 goals this term.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

It might well be a bold choice from Emery, but the young winger might be the perfect candidate to start against a team in poor form, as the Villans look to climb back up the table.

Shamarh Brooks sparkles on ODI debut as West Indies go 1-0 up

Ireland stay in the hunt courtesy Balbirnie and Tector, but fall short by 24 runs in the end

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Jan-2022
Shamarh Brooks hit 93 off 89 on ODI debut as West Indies recovered from a shaky start to beat Ireland by 24 runs in the first ODI of a three-match series.Choosing to field at Sabina Park in Kingston, Ireland’s bowlers had the home team in early trouble, with West Indies slipping to 62 for 4 in 19 overs. They had started steadily, being 59 for 1 at one point, though the run rate dawdled at the three-and-a-half mark. But three wickets fell in the space of 2.2 overs, and captain Kieron Pollard strode out to join the debuting Brooks, who had come in at No. 4.Together, the two put on 155 runs in just 136 balls, having begun cautiously given the rush of wickets, but opening out as the partnership progressed. Brooks reached his half-century in 61 balls at the end of the 36th over, and Pollard hit a hat-trick of sixes against Andy McBrine to go from 41 off 49 to 59 off 52. The over went for 23 runs, Brooks also finding the boundary later on.Ireland fined, docked points

Ireland have been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate during their loss to West Indies in the first ODI, and have been fined 40% of their match fees as a result. Ireland were adjudged to be two overs short of the target in the game and, therefore, were also docked two points from their Super League tally.

Pollard had begun his acceleration earlier, but eventually fell for a 66-ball 69, caught at long-on in an attempt to hit his fifth six.Brooks fell seven short of his hundred, missing out on becoming only the second West Indies player to score a century on ODI debut after Desmond Haynes, when he was trapped lbw by Mark Adair in the 45th over. Some meaty hits by Odean Smith pushed West Indies past 250, but wickets continued to fall and they were bowled out in 48.5 overs.Ireland lost former captain William Porterfield for a duck in the second over, but captain Andy Balbirnie, the other opener, and Harry Tector, at No. 4, did well to keep Ireland on track. Ireland did have another hiccup before the two got together, though, as McBrine was forced to retire hurt when he and Balbirnie had got a good second-wicket partnership going. McBrine copped a blow on the helmet from Smith in the 16th over, and went off at the end of the next. He had a concussion and Ireland had to bring in Neil Rock at No. 9 as a substitute.Balbirnie and McBrine had added 61 in 91 balls before McBrine went off, looking set on 34 off 50. However, Ireland’s momentum didn’t stall as Tector allied with Balbirnie for an even bigger stand.Ireland were well in control at 165 for 1 in 36 overs, with 105 needed in 84 balls and both batters having passed half-centuries, but Romario Shepherd then had Balbirnie edging behind for 71 off 94. In the next over, Smith had Tector caught at third man off a slash for a 68-ball 53, and Ireland had two new men at the crease. The wickets fell in a heap after that, and although George Dockrell (30 off 25) and Mark Adair (21* off 9) hit out, no other batter got into double-digits.Ireland were eventually bowled out in 49.1 overs.

Tom Harrison believes 'earthquake' can accelerate change as ECB unveil plan to tackle racism

Review of dressing-room culture and game-wide approach to dealing with complaints are among pledges

Tom Harrison, the ECB chief executive, says that the “earthquake” of revelations surrounding institutional racism in English cricket could prove to be the catalyst for long-overdue change within the sport, as the board on Friday unveiled its five-point action plan in response to the crisis. The measures outlined include the adoption of a game-wide approach to dealing with complaints of racism, and a full review of dressing-room culture at international and domestic level, as Harrison acknowledged that, with a game-wide fan-base in the region of 11 million people in England and Wales, “we don’t yet have a sport which represents all [communities]” and that “we risk losing these people unless we address this situation urgently”.”It feels like an earthquake has hit us,” Harrison admitted during his first media briefing since last week’s Digital, Culture, Media and Sport select committee hearing in Westminster. Azeem Rafiq’s appearance before the committee followed Yorkshire’s botched handling of a report into his allegations of institutional racism at the club and sparked a number of other players to speak out about abuse they had suffered at other clubs.”The last few weeks have been very, very tough for cricket,” Harrison said. “Our game has been portrayed in the worst possible way in the world’s media, and testimony from others has revealed serious issues which we’ve collectively not dealt with as a game for many decades, as well as more recently.”What we’re trying to get to grips with now is it’s a collective response from the game coming together to work out what we’re going to do about this very serious situation that we face. Last Friday was that moment where we came together as a collective, the whole game.”Frankly, it sometimes takes an earthquake like this to provide the kind of courage that we’ve seen from Azeem Rafiq in particular, but others too,” Harrison added. “It’s provided the opportunity to accelerate years and years of change in a very quick period of time. Perhaps this has been the shock that will enable us to bring this game together once and for all. And I don’t mean that as the game as we see it now, but the game which has got 11 million fans who want to be part of it.”Harrison’s own position within the ECB had come under scrutiny going into last week’s meeting, but he reiterated his belief that he has the “backing of the game”, as he pledged to do everything in his power to drive through the changes outlined in the action plan.”I am so committed to sorting this issue with the game,” Harrison said. “We’ve come up with some significant action as a result of what’s happened. I understand I have the backing of the game and I’m very motivated to make sure that we provide a welcoming environment across our sport for everybody. That is that is something I’ve felt passionately about, since the moment I walked into this job. I’m not going to walk away from that now.”In addition to the plan, the ECB has also committed to £25 million in funding over five years to support Ethnicity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) actions and the formation of a new anti-discrimination unit within six months, as well as setting EDI minimum standards for all venues with the power to withhold funding if those standards are not met. Also included is a commitment to conduct a full-scale review into the detection, enforcement, and sanctions against discriminatory and abusive crowd behaviour at all professional cricket grounds before the 2022 season as well as to “best practice governance” with targets for Board diversity of 30% female and locally representative ethnicity by April 2022. Every senior executive employed across the game will also have personal EDI objectives as part of their annual performance targets. The plan was developed in the wake of the Rafiq racism scandal and following a crisis meeting a week ago involving the ECB, MCC, Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) and the 18 first-class counties, among other organisations. The five target areas are: understanding and educating more; addressing dressing-room culture; removing barriers in talent pathways; creating welcoming environments for all and publishing localised action plans on a six-month deadline.Under those headings, the plan lists 12 courses of action including “adoption within three months of a standardised approach to reporting, investigating, and responding to complaints, allegations, and whistleblowing across the game”; “a full review of dressing-room culture in all men’s and women’s professional teams, both domestic and international”; and “action to aid progress into professional teams of people from diverse backgrounds (especially South Asian, Black and less privileged youngsters)”.Responding to the threat last week from the sports minister, Nigel Huddlestone, that the UK government could see fit to appoint an independent regulator if the ECB fails “to get its house in order”, Harrison acknowledged that a governance review was overdue, and that the ECB would “have to have a very good reason” not to comply with such recommendations if they were forthcoming.A meeting was held on Thursday with county chairs to discuss the ECB’s dual role of regulator and national governing body, and Harrison added that the same conversation would need to be had with the wider game in due course.”This reflects the changing role of the ECB and the broadening role of the governing body over recent years,” he said. “We haven’t done a governance review since 2017, when we introduced the independent board, so I think it’s the right time for us now to go back as a collective, and work out whether we have got the right governance structures, given the pressures and the uniquely different roles that ECB plays now as a major sport, with the multiple hats that we have to wear while overseeing the game.”Barry O’Brien, ECB Interim Chair, said: ”There is no doubt this is a critical moment for cricket. After our all-game meeting last week, we said we must rise to the challenge and respond with one voice.”We have now set out a series of game-wide commitments so that cricket can start to make the transformation that we know is needed. Change is required as a matter of urgency, but we also recognise that sustained action is required over months and years to achieve fundamental and long-lasting progress. This must begin today.”
