Chelsea’s standing in the race to sign West Ham star Declan Rice is diminishing in the eyes of “multiple sources”, reports reliable journalist Ben Jacobs.
Who are Chelsea signing this summer?
The Blues will no doubt be busy in the now open summer transfer window, with Mauricio Pochettino sure to want to put a stamp on a squad that is seen by many to be oversized.
It means we will likely see plenty of ‘deadwood’ cleared out, with the likes of Kalidou Kouliably, Romelu Lukaku, Trevoh Chalobah and Mateo Kovacic all linked with exits, while one would expect a new goalkeeper to replace one or both of Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga too.
In terms of incomings, Todd Boehly and Pochettino are seemingly dead set on brining Brighton star Moises Caicedo to the club, with reports on Friday suggesting they are winning the race for the Ecuador international.
They have also been linked with a move for Rice, seemingly ready to do battle with London rivals Arsenal for the Hammers icon’s signature, with reports revealing the Blues have jumped into the race after seeing the Gunners rejected with their opening bid.
However, according to Jacobs, Boehly and Pochettino may have to focus all their efforts on Caicedo, with word coming through the grapevine on Rice.
“Chelsea's chances of landing Rice are being downplayed by multiple sources,” the CBS journalist said. “CFC do have a long-standing interest in him, but the club are working on other priorities as it stands.”
Is Rice better than Caicedo?
It’s pretty difficult to separate the two players looking at the numbers, so it may come down to personal preferences – or club allegiances – when deciding who the better signing will be.
Rice, labelled “world class” by Danny Cowley, sits in the 56th percentile of midfielders in the big five leagues for tackles per 90, while his interceptions puts him right up in the 95th. Caicedo meanwhile, dubbed “magnificent” by Jamie Redknapp, is 87th percentile for tackling and 89th for interceptions.
They both read the game excellently then, and there’s not much to split their abilities on the ball either, with Rice leading the way when it comes to ball-carrying and Caicedo the better passer, ranking higher for total passes and pass completion.
If the Brighton star lands at Chelsea and his West Ham counterpart finds himself in north London, there will be quite the battle for supremacy when the two come head to head next season.

According to Turkish outlet Fotomac, the Magpies are one of the clubs in the race to land Fenerbahce attacking midfielder Arda Guler ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.
The report claims that Napoli and Borussia Dortmund are among the other European clubs eyeing the teenager but the Toon Army are said to be leading the charge as it stands.
It is stated that an offer in the region of €20m (£18m) could be on the table from Eddie Howe's side as they attempt to win the race for his signature, although the Turkish giants are not eager to cash in on their prized youngster without a fight.

The talented young midfielder is a left-footed senior Turkey international who predominantly plays as either a no.10 or as a right winger.
Magpies sporting director Dan Ashworth could now land the perfect heir to Miguel Almiron by signing Guler as the Fenerbahce star is another player who can use his left foot to cut inside from the right, which then opens space for Kieran Trippier to bomb on from right-back – from where he has created 22 'big chances' in the top-flight.

The 18-year-old wonderkid has averaged a sublime Sofascore rating of 7.44 across 17 appearances in the Super Lig – scoring four goals and creating 1.7 opportunities per match for his teammates.
He has racked up nine goals and nine assists in 46 outings for the club at senior level in all competitions to date, which shows that the gem has quickly adapted to life in the first team by regularly contributing in the final third.
Almiron has scored 11 goals and provided one assist in 31 Premier League matches for Newcastle this term but has only scored twice since the turn of the year and this summer could be the perfect opportunity to bring in his eventual heir.
Guler, who has been lauded as an "elite talent" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, is 11 years younger than the Paraguay international and could come in as the winger's long-term replacement.
Like Almiron, the teenager could line up on the right of the front three and use his left foot an eye for a goal to cause problems by cutting inside, which would then allow Trippier the space to double up and make runs down the flank.

Barring their 3-0 defeat to Aston Villa a fortnight ago, Newcastle have picked up form at just the right time – sitting five points clear of fifth and well in contention for Champions League qualification.
Howe also boasts the top flight's best defensive record, conceding fewer goals than any other side in the division, while Arsenal have been struggling in that respect without star defender William Saliba.
Arteta won't be helped by Newcastle's home advantage, either, and we can actually see them losing this difficult encounter.
Roberto De Zerbi's Brighton side have arguably been one of the success stories of this season and are still in with an outside shot of European qualification.
Graham Potter was a very tough act to follow at the Amex, especially after the Englishman recorded Brighton's highest-ever Premier League finish last season, yet De Zerbi has somehow done it – earning plenty of praise in the process.
Only Arsenal, City, Liverpool and Tottenham have bagged more goals than the Seagulls this season, but their defensive record has left a lot to be desired recently – conceding nine in their last five.
Brighton's recent 3-1 loss to Nottingham Forest shows that they can be undone at the back, and we believe Arsenal have too much quality in the forward areas not to take advantage.

After their fantastic win at home to the aforementioned Brighton, Forest sealed a crucial victory in the fight for survival and one which lifts them outside the bottom three.
It's been a turbulent debut season back in the top flight for Steve Cooper's side overall, with their summer of heavy recruitment ultimately failing to propel them up Europe's most competitive league.
That being said, despite their status as real relegation candidates, this could present Arsenal with another stern test as Forest are still very much playing to remain in this division.
Statistically, only Leeds United and Bournemouth have conceded more than Forest, while they're also among the Premier League's lowest goalscorers.

Last but not least, a resurgent Wolves side travel to London on the final day to face off against Arteta.
Julen Lopetegui has reinvigorated the Old Gold, with Wolves tasting victory in three of their last five whilst climbing further and further away from the drop zone.
