Aston Villa suffered a poor 4-1 defeat to Manchester City in midweek which could derail the momentum they were building following the international break.
Despite trailing just 2-1 heading into the interval, Phil Foden scored twice more during the second half to condemn Villa to their eighth league defeat of the campaign.
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery during a Premier League game.
With seven games left, they hold a two-point advantage over Tottenham Hotspur in fourth place, albeit Spurs have a game in hand.
The Midlands side takes on Brentford this afternoon and Unai Emery will likely rejig his starting lineup, dropping a midfielder who was poor against City.
Tim Iroegbunam’s game in numbers vs Man City
The youngster was given his first Premier League start of the season against the champions yet failed to really showcase his talent during the match.
The midfielder was deployed alongside Douglas Luiz in the heart of the midfield but completed just 12 passes during his time on the pitch, managing to take only 28 touches of the ball too, as he failed to really get involved.
Iroegbunam also won four of his ten ground duels contested, lost possession six times and succeeded with just one of his three dribble attempts, while being dribbled past on two occasions.

The midfielder was utilised due to John McGinn serving the last match of his three-game suspension, but with that ending, the Scot is in pole position to reclaim his position in the starting XI.
Iroegbunam will learn from this experience, but with much at stake over the coming weeks, unleashing McGinn against Brentford will be the most logical thing for Emery to do.
John McGinn’s season in numbers
McGinn was sent off against Spurs a few weeks ago due to a poor challenge on Destiny Udogie, subsequently receiving a three-match ban.
Prior to this, the former Hibs gem had played every single league match for the club, scoring six goals and grabbing three assists, proving to be one of Emery’s best players.
John McGinn
Not only that, but McGinn also ranks fifth in the squad for big chances created (9) in the top flight, along with ranking third for key passes per game (1.4), third for successful dribbles per game (1.6) and fourth for tackles per game (1.7), showing how effective he is across a range of metrics.
The £120k-per-week maestro had previously been described as a “relentless creature” by journalist Mat Kendrick during his first season at Villa Park, going from strength to strength ever since.
His availability ahead of the Brentford game will give Emery a massive boost as he aims for three points.
John McGinn
McGinn has shown time and time again – for both club and country – that he can make a difference when it really matters. The next seven games in the league are all must-win if Villa are to qualify for the Champions League next season.
With the Scot back in the starting XI alongside Luiz, Emery has his first-choice midfield partnership available and raring to go against the Bees this afternoon.

Much has been made of Liverpool's impressive academy in recent weeks as Jurgen Klopp has brought several talented youngsters into the first-team set-up.
The likes of Jayden Danns, Bobby Clark, James McConnell, Lewis Koumas, Mateusz Musialowski, and Conor Bradley have all made appearances for the senior side this season, having come through the youth sides.
They will all be hoping to follow in Trent Alexander-Arnold's footsteps over the years to come to establish themselves as regular starters for the Reds.
Conor Bradley for Liverpool.
However, not every young player who makes their debut for the first-team has what it takes to make the step up week-in-week-out, and some of the aforementioned talents will move on and forge a career elsewhere.
A prime example of that was exciting wonderkid Ovie Ejaria, who made his first appearance for Liverpool before U23s teammate Alexander-Arnold, as he came through the academy but failed to make his mark at senior level.
Ovie Ejaria's Liverpool career in numbers
The versatile midfielder worked his way through the youth teams on Merseyside and racked up three appearances for the U18s and 26 for the U23s before his first-team debut.
Klopp handed the then-18-year-old starlet his first outing against Derby County in the League Cup in September 2016, and his Premier League debut came two months later in a 6-1 win over Watford.
During that 2016/17 campaign, Ejaria played eight first-team matches under the German head coach, which included three in the FA Cup, three in the League Cup, and two in the Premier League, but failed to register a single goal or assist.
Ovie Ejaria
He did not do enough in those eight games to convince Klopp to integrate him into the team on a regular basis and was sent out on loan to Sunderland the following season, where he produced one goal and zero assists in 11 Championship clashes.
Ejaria then spent the first six months of the 2018/19 campaign on loan with Steven Gerrard at Rangers in Scotland, where the young whiz scored two goals and provided one assist in 28 outings.
The former Liverpool captain hailed him as "excellent" during their time together in Glasgow but it was short-lived as it was only a short-term loan.
That arrangement came to an end in January 2019 and the attacking midfielder, who can also play out wide, then spent 18 months on loan with Reading in the Championship.
The versatile dynamo made 52 appearances in the second tier during that time – scoring four goals and assisting seven – and that convinced the Royals to snap him up on a permanent basis, who had an option to buy him at the end of his loan.
Trent Alexander-Arnold's Liverpool career in numbers
The now-England international, Alexander-Arnold, played with Ejaria for the U18s and the U23s with Liverpool – and the U21s for England – before they both made their first-team breakthroughs during the 2016/17 campaign.
His debut came after the midfielder's, though, as Klopp did not hand him his first appearance until October 2016 – a month after Ejaria's bow – against Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup.
Like his former academy teammate, the impressive right-back did not immediately become a regular in the side as he ended the season with 12 senior games under his belt, seven of which came in the Premier League.
However, unlike Ejaria, Alexander-Arnold did enough to convince Klopp to make him a part of his squad for the 2017/18 campaign, whilst the midfielder went away to Sunderland on loan.
The English defender made 33 first-team appearances that term, including ten in the Champions League and 19 in the Premier League, but was yet to showcase his true creative talent with just two assists in those games.
His breakthrough as an outstanding performer at first-team level came during the following season as the academy graduate assisted a staggering 16 goals from right-back in 40 outings.
He assisted four goals in 11 matches as Liverpool won the Champions League – with a 2-0 victory over Spurs in the final – and set up 12 in 29 Premier League games.
Since then, Alexander-Arnold has reached 302 appearances for the club in all competitions and contributed with 18 goals and 82 assists as a right-back.
The England star has won the Premier League, the Champions League, the FA Cup, and the League Cup (twice) since coming through the academy, which – along with his statistics – speak to how impressive his career at the club has been so far.
What happened to Ovie Ejaria
Meanwhile, Ejaria's career has gone in the other direction since his first-team debut for Liverpool, which came before Alexander-Arnold's back in 2016.
Reading paid a reported fee of £3.5m to sign him on a permanent basis in the summer of 2020, after his 18-month loan spell in Berkshire, and he enjoyed a strong 2020/21 campaign in the Championship.

As you can see in the table above, the former England U21 international provided drive from midfield with goals, assists, and dribbles, whilst being solid by winning half of his physical duels.
Unfortunately, Ejaria missed 14 competitive games through injury the following season, which restricted him to 26 Championship outings for Reading.
He then featured in just eight league games for the Royals during the 2022/23 campaign as his team were relegated down to League One last year.
Ovie Ejaria
In December 2023, having failed to make a single appearance during the 2023/24 season by that point, Reading announced that the midfielder had left the club by mutual consent.
Their statement revealed that their need to reduce expenditure and Ejaria's 'injury and fitness' issues meant that an amicable agreement was made to allow him to leave.
The attacking midfielder did not find a new club during the January transfer window and has not played a competitive match for any club since the 2022/23 campaign.
This means that he is currently clubless at the age of 26, when the former Liverpool wonderkid should be in the prime years of his career, and it remains to be seen what the next step will be for him.
Hopefully, Ejaria will put his injury issues behind him and find a new team before long to get his career back on track.
Leeds United are searching for their first win in three matches as they welcome Stoke City to Elland Road later tonight in the Championship.
The Whites head into this game off the back of a 1-1 draw with Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town away from home last time out in the second tier.
It was a result that allowed Ipswich Town to move ahead of them, and into the automatic promotion places, on Saturday as they won their clash with Plymouth Argyle.
Daniel Farke's side had also lost their game before the draw with the Terriers in a 3-2 defeat to Chelsea in the FA Cup fifth round, which means that their last win was against Leicester City last month.
The German head coach could now look to make some alterations to his starting XI from last weekend's draw. With that in mind, here is FFC's predicted Leeds line-up to take on the Potters…
1 Illan Meslier
Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier.
Illan Meslier should continue between the sticks. The French shot-stopper has been Farke's first-choice – with 33 league starts – and there is nothing to suggest that he will switch things up in goal at this point in the season.
2 Connor Roberts
Burnley right-back Connor Roberts.
The first change to the starting XI could come in the right-back position as Connor Roberts could be rewarded for his impressive cameo against Huddersfield.
Signed on loan from Burnley on deadline day, the Wales international came off the bench to assist Patrick Bamford's equaliser with a crisp cross along the floor for the striker to convert.
Roberts has contributed with one goal and one assist in five appearances as a substitute in the Championship for the Whites so far, and could now come in for his full league debut for the club.
3 Joe Rodon
Leeds United's loan defender Joe Rodon.
At the heart of the defence, Joe Rodon should start once again for the Whites. The on-loan Tottenham Hotspur defender has been a reliable performer at the back throughout the campaign so far.
He has won 66% of his duels across 33 appearances in the Championship, and his defending has helped the side to keep 13 clean sheets in total.
4 Ethan Ampadu
Leeds midfielder Ethan Ampadu.
Playing out of his natural position in central midfield, Ethan Ampadu could start next to his fellow Wales international to complete the centre-back pairing.
With Pascal Struijk's continued absence through injury, the former Chelsea prospect could be picked ahead of the experienced Liam Cooper.
5 Sam Byram
Leeds defender Sam Byram.
The second change to the XI could be an enforced one. Farke revealed in his pre-match press conference that Junior Firpo is a doubt to face Stoke due to a calf issue.
An injury to the former Barcelona defender could open the door for Sam Byram, who was on the bench against Huddersfield, to make a return to the line-up.
Signed from Norwich City on a free transfer last summer, the English full-back has won 51% of his duels and made 2.7 tackles and interceptions per game across 25 appearances in the league this season.
6 Archie Gray
Archie Gray
Archie Gray could remain in the XI but move into the middle of the park to accommodate Roberts' involvement at right-back, which could see Glen Kamara dropped to the bench.
The Finland international only won two duels and created one chance for his teammates in an uneventful display against the Terriers, and Gray could be provided with a chance to shine in his natural position.
He was deployed in midfield against Chelsea in the FA Cup recently and his performance, with six duels won, four dribbles completed, and one chance created, earned him the official Player of the Match award.
The academy graduate could, therefore, be more combative in that role and offer more drive, with his dribbling ability, than Kamara, which is why the former Rangers star could be dropped for this game.
7 Ilia Gruev
Leeds midfielder Ilia Gruev.
Ilia Gruev could start next to the 17-year-old whiz for his 12th start of the Championship season, since his permanent move from Werder Bremen last summer.
Ampadu's continued deployment at centre-back has opened the door for the Bulgaria international to establish himself as a regular starter in midfield.
8 Dan James
Dan James
The third change to the starting XI could come on the right side of the attack as Wales international Dan James could finally be unleashed over Wilfried Gnonto.
His last league start for Leeds came against Norwich City in January as a hip injury provided the Italian whiz with a chance to take his place in the side.

As you can see in the table above, the former Manchester United whiz, who ex-boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer claimed has the "X-factor", has the quality to make an impact as a scorer and a creator of goals.
Gnonto has blanked in his last three matches, with zero goals or assists, after a run of five goals and one assist in five games, and Farke could rotate him out to bring James back in for this clash with Stoke.
9 Georginio Rutter
Leeds forward Georginio Rutter.
In the number ten position, Georginio Rutter could keep his place in the starting XI with the hope that he will have the key to unlocking the Stoke defence.
The French wizard has created 20 'big chances' and registered 11 assists for his teammates in 34 appearances in the Championship so far this season.
10 Crysencio Summerville
Crysencio Summerville.
On the left of the attack, Crysencio Summerville could look to end a run of four matches without a goal or an assist to his name in all competitions.
He has racked up 15 goals and eight assists in 30 league starts so far for Leeds and his manager could back him to get back to his best tonight, especially with Jaidon Anthony ruled out of contention to play due to personal reasons.

Tottenham Hotspur have been a real force in the Premier League this season, and while their form has taken a slight hit as of late, they'll undoubtedly be battling it for the Champions League places until the bitter end.
Ange Postecoglou has taken a side that limped to a seventh-place finish last year, lost arguably their greatest-ever player in the summer, and has turned them into one of the most exciting teams in Europe.
That said, with the goals not coming quite as easily since the turn of the year, the Australian might be wishing that Daniel Levy and Co didn't sanction the £750k sale of a player who has been tearing it up in the Championship for the last couple of years, as he could've been a monster under the tutelage of the former Celtic boss.
Jack Clarke's Tottenham transfer
Tottenham signed the dynamic winger Jack Clarke from Leeds United in July 2019 for a fee believed to be around £8.5m before sending him back on loan for the 2019/20 season, although a lack of game time saw him move to Queens Park Rangers in January.
Over the next two seasons, the York-born gem would spend time bouncing between the youth sides at Tottenham and loan moves to Stoke City and Sunderland. Luckily, the latter ended up being quite successful, and he was eventually sold to the Black Cats in July 2022 for a fee that is reported to have been only £750k.
However, the deal also included a considerable sell-on clause of potentially up to 50%, which could prove to be savvy business if the 23-year-old is sold for the price that is being reported.
Sunderland winger Jack Clarke.
In all, the 5 foot 11 winger made just four appearances for Spurs' first team, 26 for the youth teams, and a combined 21 between QPR and Stoke when he finally left for the Stadium of Light.
At the time, it just looked like a transfer that didn't work out, and by cutting their losses, the north Londoners did the right thing – oh, how things have changed.
Jack Clarke's valuation at Sunderland
In his first season as an official Sunderland player, Clarke scored a reasonably impressive 11 goals and provided 14 assists in his 50 appearances, which was enough to help the side reach the Championship Play-Off semi-finals in their first season back.
Jack Clarke
However, this season, the young "diamond", as former manager Tony Mowbray described him, has seriously upped his game and already has 15 goals and four assists to his name in just 35 appearances, which is all the more impressive considering that Sunderland are currently 22 points off the automatic promotion places.
With his consistently impressive performances in the Championship, the 23-year-old has understandably caught the eye of several Premier League clubs in recent months, with The Standard reporting that Burnley saw a £15m bid turned down just last month.
The report revealed it would take an offer of around £20m to secure his exit from the northeast, which would be around £19.25m more than Sunderland paid Tottenham in 2022 – or a 2566% increase.
While Spurs could be set to make up to £10m from any potential deal, which is brilliant from a financial point of view, you can't help but wonder if Clarke would've been better off staying in north London.
With Son producing 11 of his 18 goal involvements as a centre-forward, Timo Werner providing just two assists in six appearances, and Brennan Johnson returning just two goal involvements in seven games on the left, there is every chance the Sunderland ace could've made that position his own this year.
Ultimately, he's not a Tottenham player anymore, and the potential sell-on could be a nice earner for the club.
Spurs struck gold with "special" Conte signing who's worth more than Son

However, seeing just what Postecoglou could have done with Clarke in the Premier League would have been intriguing indeed.

Burns ended his stint with Lancashire in county cricket after one match last month and it has been revealed he was suffering extended symptoms of fatigue and burn out
ESPNcricinfo staff04-Jun-2019Australia opening batsman Joe Burns has been diagnosed with a fatigue disorder stemming from a virus he suffered in October 2018 which has left his hopes of a place in the Ashes squad hanging in the balance.Burns ended his stint with Lancashire in county cricket after one match last month, and it has been revealed he was suffering extended symptoms of fatigue and burn-out, the timeline meaning he was playing with the condition for much of last season.Although there is no timeframe yet for his return, a Queensland Cricket statement said it was anticipated he would be available in the “near future”. It is understood that the Ashes series, which starts on August 1, remains a realistic aim for Burns.”After consultation with specialists, he was diagnosed with a protracted post-infectious fatigue disorder dating back to an October 2018 viral infection,” Queensland Cricket said. “Joe is currently undertaking a treatment period of rest and recuperation. A definite prognosis for a recovery is unavailable at present; however it is anticipated he will be fully available for cricket in the near future.”Burns is currently an incumbent opening batsman in the Test team after he was recalled to face Sri Lanka earlier this season. He made 180 in the second Test in Canberra – his fourth hundred in 16 Tests – but even before the illness his performance did not guarantee him an Ashes berth with David Warner’s return to international cricket. The men’s Ashes squad will be named very late – after the inter-squad game between Australia and Australia A in Southampton at the end of July – to give the selectors as much time as possible to assess their options.Burns was not named in the Australia A squad, instead left to take up his deal with Lancashire but, if his recovery goes well, the selectors could consider adding him to the group.
