Southampton submit bid for Liam Delap

Southampton have submitted a bid for Manchester City striker Liam Delap, although it has not been accepted by the Premier League champions.

What’s the word?

That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, who shared the update via Twitter.

He outlined: “Southampton have submitted an official bid this week around £16m to sign Liam Delap on permanent deal. Manchester City have turned down the proposal.

“Delap, top target for Southampton but there’s still no agreement in place.”

 Supporters will be buzzing

Even though City rejected the offer for Delap, it appears that Southampton are finally making their move to fill their vacant striker role, following Armando Broja’s return to Chelsea after his loan spell at St Mary’s.

It will be music to Saints fans’ ears that they have honed in on a top target and are at least making moves to get him, and this particular target has a remarkably high ceiling.

Delap bagged eight goals and two assists in just 10 Premier League 2 games last season, suggesting that he may have outgrown that level. Following City’s recent acquisition of Erling Haaland, though, chances up front will be few and far between for the England underage international.

Standing at 6 foot 1 but also possessing a blistering change of pace, this physical marvel would be a remarkable coup for the Saints, who would more than replace Broja in one fell swoop.

Pep Guardiola has been full of praise for the striker, hence his reluctance to let Delap leave. In February, the City manager said: “He is the type of striker we don’t have. He is a killer, a typical British striker, an incredible finisher.”

Now that the Citizens have signed arguably the best striker of this mould in Haaland, Delap is certain to fall down the pecking order at the Etihad Stadium. Given Southampton’s fine track record of developing young talent, it could be the perfect platform for him to showcase and hone his skills.

His limited first-team experience could be an issue, but given the Saints’ recent Premier League finishes of 15th in the last two campaigns and 11th the season before that, they have something of a safety net to allow him to acclimate.

Supporters will be buzzing that the club are intent on trying to get their man, and this would represent the perfect purchase for Ralph Hassenhuttl as he looks for a focal point from which his team can build. They’ll be even happier if Southampton go back in with another offer for Delap.

Tottenham: Big James Maddison claim emerges

Tottenham Hotspur are weighing up a move for Leicester City’s James Maddison, player representative and Spurs fan Paul O’Keefe reports.

The lowdown

According to Dan Kilpatrick of The London Evening Standard, Antonio Conte wants to sign a creative midfielder this summer.

Spurs reportedly held an interest in bringing Christian Eriksen back to North London, but he’s now joined Manchester United.

Maddison, 25, is under contract at The King Power Stadium for another two years.

The latest

O’Keefe, an FA registered intermediary, was asked on Twitter for news about Spurs’ pursuit of a playmaker.

He replied that ‘they are very seriously considering’ a move for Maddison.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments-2/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The verdict

It would seem Maddison ticks the key boxes for Conte. He provided eight assists in last season’s Premier League in addition to his 12 goals, ranking him joint-tenth in the division.

And he also ranks inside the league’s top 30 for key passes per 90 match with 1.4.

Some Spurs fans, however, may be less than pleased with some of the player’s old tweets.

In 2013, he declared that he didn’t ‘like’ the Lilywhites and that he wanted then Liverpool striker Luis Suarez to ‘destroy’ them.

And he also ripped into Gareth Bale, whom he hated ‘with a passion’. He claimed that the former Gunners midfielder Jack Wilshere was ’10x better’ than the Welsh winger.

It seems unlikely that that would come into the club’s thinking, though, particularly when you consider that they made light of some of Matt Doherty’s tweets when he joined the club in 2020.

Leeds: Journalist makes big Charles de Ketelaere claim

Belgian journalist Alexandre Braeckman has indicated the kind of fee Club Brugge would accept for Leeds United target Charles de Ketelaere.

The lowdown

According to The Athletic’s Phil Hay, Leeds are still ‘very much in the running’ to sign De Ketelaere, who’s also wanted by Serie A champions AC Milan and Leicester City.

He’s played in a variety of positions, including centre-forward, both wings and attacking midfield.

The 21-year-old is under contract with the Belgian champions for another two years.

The latest

Speaking to MOT Leeds News, Braeckmann explained that Brugge are hoping to keep De Ketelaere but that doesn’t mean they won’t be receptive to offers.

He thinks that a fee somewhere between £25.8million and £30.2million, as well add-ons, could be enough to convince them.

“Bruges is still trying to convince Charles to stay for one more season, that’s the main ambition, but they will analyse every offer that’s made,” he said.

“I expect, personally, that they could agree a fee around €30, €35m plus bonus.”

The verdict

This could end up being a record deal for Leeds United. According to Transfermarkt, the biggest transfer in their history is the £29.56million move for Brenden Aaronson earlier in the summer.

Fortunately, though, De Ketelaere looks like he would be worth it.

He ranked in the Jupiler Pro League’s top ten for non-penalty goals (sixth) and total goal involvements (ninth) last season, an impressive feat as a youngster not known as an out and out striker (via FBRef).

Across all competitions, he notched eye-catching totals of 18 goals and ten assists.

He’s even been likened to Brazilian legend Kaka by scouts because ‘he makes very intelligent runs, has the quality to bring others into play and has a similar physical presence and gait’ (The Athletic).

Spurs: Thomas drops Spence update

Lyall Thomas has dropped an update on reported Tottenham Hotspur transfer target Djed Spence.

What’s the talk?

In a recent post on Twitter, the Sky Sports journalist revealed that Tottenham are set for further talks with Middlesbrough regarding a £15m deal for the right-back, with Daniel Levy said to be spearheading negotiations for the 21-year-old.

In his supporting report, Thomas went on to state that the Tottenham chairman is personally handling the club’s pursuit of Spence in order to allow Fabio Paratici to focus on other targets, while the England U21 international is himself said to be desperate to seal a move to north London this summer.

In his tweet, the journalist said: “Daniel Levy drives forward Tottenham’s pursuit of Djed Spence as more talks are expected over £15m-rated England U21.”

Supporters will love Thomas’ claim

Considering just how impressive Spence was for Nottingham Forest last season, in addition to it being reported that the signing of a new right wing-back is one of Antonio Conte’s priorities in the summer transfer window, Thomas’ claim that Levy is set to restart talks over a deal for the Middlesbrough starlet is sure to be news the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium faithful will love.

Indeed, over his 42 Championship outings for Forest last term, the £7.2m-rated talent scored two goals, provided five assists and created six big chances, as well as making an average of 1.0 key passes, taking 0.6 shots and completing 1.8 dribbles per fixture.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-much-more” title= “Read the latest Spurs news, transfer rumours and more!”]

The £4.4k-per-week right-back also impressed in metrics more typical of his defensive position, making an average of 1.5 tackles, 1.6 interceptions, 1.4 clearances and winning 5.8 duels per game.

These metrics saw the England youth international average a rather astonishing WhoScored match rating of 7.05, ranking him as Steve Cooper’s sixth-best performer in the second tier of English football.

Furthermore, with neither Emerson Royal nor Matt Doherty particularly cementing the right wing-back spot in Conte’s back five last season, as well as Spurs having something of a homegrown player issue at present, the signing of a new Englishman in the position would appear to make a great deal of sense for the club.

As such, it is clear to see that Thomas’ update revealing that Levy is set to continue talks regarding a £15m deal for Spence is undoubtedly fantastic news for everyone involved with the club – not least Conte himself.

Leeds: Orta interested in Jason Knight

Leeds United are interested in a deal to bring Jason Knight to Elland Road in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Leeds Live, who claimed that the Whites and recently-relegated Burnley, are considering a move for the Derby County midfielder in the off-season, before relaying comments made by the 21-year-old concerning a potential move to the Premier League this summer.

Regarding his future, the Republic of Ireland international said: “Whenever I step out there I always mix it with anyone. If that offer comes in, it’s something you have always dreamt of, playing in the Premier League and at the highest level.

“At the moment I’m still a Derby player. Everyone knows it’s been a tough year with things behind the scenes at Derby. I’ve played a lot of games so I was happy with that aspect but what the future holds I don’t know. I’ll see what happens.”

The next Mason Mount

While it is true that Derby have been in something of a downward spiral in recent years – something which ultimately saw the Rams suffer relegation to the third tier of English football this year – Knight has undoubtedly been one of the few bright sparks at Pride Park.

Indeed, despite his tender age, the 21-year-old has already made 119 first-team appearances for the Midlands club, scoring 11 goals and registering four assists across all competitions.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more-2″ title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer rumours and more!”]

The £4.5m-rated talent has even captained his side on occasion, with Wayne Rooney suggesting that the academy graduate’s attitude both on the pitch and in training was the reason for him handing Irishman the armband.

The 36-year-old said of Knight: “He’s a manager’s dream. He gives everything. He’s great for the younger and older lads to take note of, but I still want more from him. But in terms of what we’re trying to build, he deserves the armband – whether he’s 19 or 30.”

As such, considering his leadership qualities, his undoubted ability and his impressive positional versatility – being comfortable operating in defensive, central or attacking midfield, and on either flank – it would appear as if Knight could well be on course to follow in the footsteps of one of Derby’s former loan starlets in Mason Mount.

Indeed, the England international made his name over 38 Championship appearances with the Rams in 2018/19, with the £103m-rated Chelsea midfielder scoring eight goals, providing four assists and creating seven big chances for his team-mates, along with taking 2.6 shots and making 1.9 key passes per game.

As such, should Victor Orta be successful in his pursuit of Knight this summer, and the 21-year-old continues his impressive career progression at Elland Road, the Spaniard could well have unearthed the next Mount for Leeds. That is sure to be an incredibly exciting prospect for Whites supporters and Jesse Marsch.

Miguel Almiron could leave Newcastle

Journalist Roberto Rojas has revealed that Miguel Almiron could now leave Newcastle United this summer.

The Lowdown: Bit-part player

The 28-year-old has largely been a bit-part player this season, having only featured 32 times in total across all competitions, playing the full 90 minutes on just five occasions (Transfermarkt). Four of those were in the Magpies’ first four league games of the campaign.

With the riches at their disposal, and the amount that they spent in the January transfer window, the St James’ Park outfit will be expected to strengthen heavily again this summer, which means players like Almiron may be shown the door in order to make room for new arrivals.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-6/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Almiron could leave Newcastle

Taking to Twitter, Rojas has revealed that Almiron would like to play a ‘huge’ part at Newcastle next term, with as many as four clubs ‘interested’ in signing the Paraguay international should he decide to leave.

The journalist stated: “Sources tell me that Miguel Almiron is highly praised by Eddie Howe & the #NUFC brass but would also like to play a huge part at the club next season.

“Everton, Fulham, Sevilla & Napoli are among the clubs interested in the Paraguay international should a transfer be needed.”

The Verdict: Sell

Almiron currently holds a market value of £14.4m, and at 28 years of age, he is in his prime.

When you also consider his ample Premier League experience, Newcastle could demand a sizeable fee for him, so this summer seems like the best time to part ways if the Paraguayan would prefer more regular action elsewhere.

The midfielder is likely to have his game-time limited even further if and when new signings come in this summer, so for his sake, he should be looking for a move away in order to play more regularly.

In other news, NUFC have now scheduled a meeting over potentially signing this transfer target

Manchester United: Red Devils scout David Carmo

Manchester United reportedly sent scouts to watch SC Braga defender David Carmo ahead of a possible summer swoop.

The Lowdown: Carmo profiled

Carmo is a left-footed centre-back who can also play in a holding midfield role. The 22-year-old stands at 6 foot 4 and has made 54 senior appearances for Braga.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-news/” title=”Latest Man Utd news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Labelled as a player with ‘enormous physical capacity and tactical awareness’, Carmo has been limited to just 14 senior appearances this season due to an ankle fracture.

He returned to action in February and helped Braga end FC Porto’s 58-game unbeaten streak in the league earlier his week.

The Latest: United watching on

Sports Witness relayed an update from Record regarding Carmo on Wednesday. They claimed that several clubs sent scouts to watch the defender in action in the week, one of which was United.

Carmo has a €40m (£33.6m) release clause in his Braga deal, with Premier League rivals Liverpool, along with sides in Spain and Italy also keen.

The Verdict: Impressed?

Manchester United scouts may have left Portugal fairly impressed with Carmo following his display against Porto in the 1-0 win.

As per SofaScore, he made six clearances, two interceptions and wasn’t dribbled past all evening, ending with a match rating of 7.1/10, better than any Porto defender.

Carmo also completed seven of his ten attempted long balls and won three duels, so United may look to check in again on the defender before the summer, where defensive reinforcements could be high on Erik ten Hag’s wishlist.

Kohli is entitled to say what he feels

Our readers express their thoughts on Kohli’s spat with the Indian media, the uniqueness of Bradman, Rahane’s rise, the BPL final and more

19-Dec-2015A letter to Virat Kohli
Reader: Anuraag Agarwal
Hi Sharda,When media, ex-cricketers and commentators can give their viewpoint on everything and are allowed to speak their mind (so to speak), why is it a problem if Virat has mentioned what he thinks about the whole issue? Instead of saying that Virat has a problem with criticism, I would rather say that he is entitled to say what he feels about what is being said. It is purely his freedom of speech and I reckon everyone including India’s captain (a job which comes with so much pressure and responsibility purely due to amount of expectations) has right to say what he feels. Virat has simply asked for more support rather than criticism all the time. Way to go Virat… I am sure true fans of Indian cricket understand and share your viewpoint. Probably time has come when someone needs to stand up against all the negativity that is being generated in the media for every possible issue not just cricket… way to go.Reader: Ranjith Kumar Patnani
An insightful article written on how and why media’s questions are more pointed towards what’s to be improved or corrected than what’s already achieved. And the metaphor drawing the question as to why not only cricketers can comment on cricketing subjects or matters is commendable. But as far as I followed the recent press conference, we shall also contemplate captain Virat’s comments here. While media hit at the drawbacks or wrong decisions taken in the team’s performance, they should also have, in my opinion, applaud what the team has achieved so far in the series in the typical pitch conditions, more importantly. You can be cynical if the performance is not up to the mark, but not while winning. At the end, they should also need some encouragement, at least vocally, through media, right? But yes, as a captain, we would expect Virat to be more careful and meaningful in his comments and answers. One year is already enough time for a captain to lead the team in all aspects, including answering the media.Sport is more about philosophy than we might think
Reader: Delwood
Unfortunately there is not much cross-over between the average sports fan and philosophy. But I recall the Dutch historian Huizinga said that the basis of civilization is play and games (not labour and productivity as Marx and others have insisted). This insight was taken up by Michael Oakeshott, an English philosopher who was also keen on cricket and horse-racing analogies in his essays. If there is a sport for the thinking man it is certainly cricket. Why didn’t everyone copy Bradman?
Reader: Nutcutlet
The Jesuits (SJ) have a well-known saying regarding education: give me a child until he is seven, and I will show you the man. In the case of Bradman, perhaps the word ‘batsman’ would be appropriate. It’s generally recognised in this article and elsewhere that the Don had his own technique which was obviously allied to superb – utterly exceptional – hand-eye coordination. That Bradman’s unique approach to batting was down to the water-tank, stump and golf-ball practice is so well known, but it was more than that: growing up in Bowral, he saw no first-class cricket at all until he saw a day’s play of the ’20-’21 Ashes at Sydney, aged 12 and a half. The Don was unsullied, and therefore uncomplicated, by having a batting hero whom he could attempt to imitate. It’s impossible in today’s world for a lad to remain so completely uninfluenced by cricketing role models. Genius needs no mentoring, only the opportunity to express itself. He remains the only batting genius, IMO. Only the Don!Can a batsman ever come close to Don Bradman’s Test record?•Getty ImagesRahane: India’s all-conditions expert

Elsewhere I had commented that Rahane along with Kohli and Ashwin are the only three players who should play all three formats of the game for India. People who still question Rahane’s talent, temperament, and commitment do not know what they are talking about. He is perfectly suited to play under any conditions. He had been kept away for too long while players with half his talent were promoted over him. He will now show what he is made of. He may not be captaincy material (I see Ashwin as captain, but age may come in the way as Kohli seems set for a long reign) but Rahane will serve India for quite a few years. It is irresponsible to bring down players from other countries to make our players look good. Have patience and you will see good players make their own statements with their talent. Looking forward to Rahane making more runs in the future as also Ashwin taking more wickets overseas to silence everyone (even me!) about his ability to do so. More power to these two special talents!Kapali 39* seals Comilla’s tense title win

Barisal Bulls really played well. I personally saw a future captain of Bangladesh in the making. We can’t replace the great Mash on what he has done and maybe it’s too late to pick Mahmudullah Riyad but as an interim Test captain or even a transitioning captain for Mash, Riyad showed a lot of character today. He played the role of the icon player, he played the role of a captain, he played the role of a batsman, he played the role of a bowler and he played the role of an awesome allrounder. Congrats to Comilla camp! A great final and made the wait so much sweeter. It was great to see Mash bowl – just goes to show the level of dedication he has for his game. Lead, captained three BPL victories – WOW ! We have not seen any new talent come out of BPL as far as batting goes. On the flipside we might have found a new partner for Mustafizur. Abu Hider Rony would be an awesome show with Mustafizur in T20 or ODI – we can safely say Taskin and Rubel is a write-off for the next few games. We need new batsmen to come out and play.Ponting stands up for embattled Hobart

Tradition is a wonderful thing but sometimes you need to know when to shake things up a bit to stop complacency creeping in. When the ECB decided to stop giving Edgbaston, Old Trafford and Headingley guaranteed Test match slots every year and make them all fight it out with the young pretenders, nobody thought it was serious. Then Cardiff was awarded the first Ashes Test in 2009 and suddenly everyone realised they had to get their act together. Now, Test cricket is available to more of the British public and in rapidly improving stadiums, as Edgbaston, Old Trafford and Headingley have all embarked on expensive improvements to the visitor experience and more is hopefully coming at these and all our other international grounds. Australia is fortunate in many ways with the quality of its stadiums but shaking it up a bit can’t hurt.
