Marcus Harris made his second century of the season to help Lancashire dominate the opening day of their Rothesay County Championship match against Gloucestershire.The former Australia opener also became the first batter to pass fifty five times in his first seven innings in first-class cricket for the county and finished on 165 not out with Lancashire on 342 for five after opting to bat first on what now appears an easy-paced pitch.Such an outcome looked unlikely after the impressive Ajeet Singh Dale had taken two wickets in his first ten balls to leave the home side on 23 for two but Harris shared partnerships of 98 with Josh Bohannon and 212 with Matty Hurst, who was caught behind by James Bracey off Zaman Akhter for 78 three overs before the close.Nevertheless, Lancashire are well placed in this match between two teams who have yet to win a match this season. During his innings, Harris became the leading run-scorer in the country in either division and will go into the second day’s play with a total of 559 runs against his name this season.Yet Gloucestershire’s bowlers had dominated the first hour of the day and Singh Dale reinforced his growing reputation by bowling George Bell via body, pad and boot for 10 with his second delivery and having Keaton Jennings caught by Cameron Bancroft at second slip for four in his next overThat left Lancashire on 23 for two but after some early uncertainty Bohannon and Harris played with growing fluency and took their side to 79 for two at lunch after 28 overs, 50 of those runs having been scored in the second hour of the session.On the resumption Bohannon cruised smoothly to his half-century in 96 balls with seven fours but he was then leg before wicket to Ollie Price for 56 when he misjudged the length of an off-spinner he attempted to pull.Although that wicket ended a productive 98-run third-wicket stand, Hurst played himself in with little fuss as the wicket eased. He gave Harris excellent support and Lancashire reached tea on 189 for three with Harris unbeaten on 90 after a session in which the Gloucestershire captain, Cameron Bancroft, had rotated his bowlers frequently, albeit to limited effect.Having reached his half-century off 106 balls, Harris hit three fours off the next six deliveries and that set the tone for his second fifty. He reached his century shortly after tea with a single off Tom Price after facing 176 balls and hitting 11 fours and the six over long-on off Ollie Price that took him to 99.The evening session served merely to underline Lancashire’s dominance. Hurst reached his fifty off 98 balls and Harris took only 47 deliveries to get from 100 to 150, a picked-up six over square leg off Josh Shaw epitomising his dominance.At that point, Shaw might well have looked back with some feeling to the 14th over of the day when Harris had tried to let the ball go but only succeeded in involuntarily inside-edging it to the fine leg boundary.Singh Dale was the pick of the Gloucestershire attack but this was a day on which loose shots either didn’t find the edge or go to hand and Bancroft will hope that his batsmen can reply in kind on the second and third days of this game.First, though, he must try to prevent Lancashire collecting four batting points for the first time this season and Akhter’s late success in claiming Hurst’s wicket when the batsman appeared to pull out of a hook was a considerable fillip, especially as it was followed four balls later by a delicious yorker which castled nightwatchman Saqib Mahmood for four.Akhter’s late strikes left him with figures of two for 68 while Singh Dale finished with two for 36 from 15 tight overs.

David Sullivan, Karren Brady and the Hammers board are set to be protested against before every Saturday matchday at the London Stadium this season, with the relationship between fans and ownership at boiling point.

Now, nearly a year after West Ham parted company with Julen Lopetegui, his replacement Potter is facing the potential West Ham sack as well — with Sullivan and co eyeing up potential replacements for the Englishman.

Of the candidates to replace Potter, one name has been mentioned regularly in the form of ex-West Ham boss Slaven Bilic.

Bilic is said to be open to a move back to West Ham after departing his most recent managerial role last year, having left Saudi side Al-Fateh, and chairman Sullivan is reportedly in favour of re-appointing the Croatian eight years after he was sacked by the club.

Nuno Espirito Santo is also a top contender, which is unsurprising when you factor in the incredible job he did at Nottingham Forest before a public fallout with controversial owner Evangelos Marinakis.

This is backed up by very reliable media source Jacob Steinberg, who told The Guardian that Nuno is indeed under consideration by West Ham after he guided Forest back to European football for the first time since 1995.

Other reports suggest that the Portuguese’s priority is to remain in the Premier League, providing West Ham with a significant boost in the race for his signature, and there is every reason to believe Nuno should really be their top choice.

We’ve seen fellow free agents like Gary O’Neil and Sean Dyche mentioned too, but Nuno is clearly levels above the pair.

His pragmatic style, while not exactly the ‘West Ham way’, is exactly what the club need right now, having conceded more goals than any other Premier League side so far this season.

Forest were also very vulnerable to set plays until Nuno came in, and West Ham have had similar trouble in that regard under Potter — which comes as yet another reason to go all out for the tactician.

As well as this, Henry Winter brought attention to his excellent man-management in a fiery X post after Forest sacked Nuno in a shocking move.

While they have faced plenty of flak for it in recent years, is it time to admit Chelsea might be onto something with their transfer strategy?

Since their takeover, the Blues have clearly focused on signing young, exciting talents with high ceilings and either integrating them into the side or selling them for profit.

The likes of Cole Palmer and Estevao fit into the latter category, while Noni Madueke and Lesley Ugochukwu fit into the former.

However, while the club have made an enormous amount of money this summer, there is one player they probably should have kept hold of, someone compared to Alexander Isak.

From looking at the list of players who left Stamford Bridge over the last few months, it shouldn’t be too surprising to learnt that the player in question is Nicolas Jackson.

The Senegalese striker joined Bayern Munich on a season-long loan for £14.25m that includes an obligation to buy at £56.25m should certain conditions be met.

Now, there are some who would be happy to sell the dynamic forward, and that is fair enough; he wasn’t always the most clinical of strikers.

However, he is clearly a talented international, and one who has won comparisons to perhaps the best number nine in the world: Isak.

Yes, according to FBref, the Swedish monster was the number one most similar forward to the Blues star in the entire Premier League last season.

That might sound unbelievable to some, but to gain a better understanding of how this conclusion was reached, we can examine some of the underlying numbers in which they ranked so closely.

In this instance, those metrics included non-penalty expected goals plus assists, shots and shots on target, goal-creating actions, aerial duels won and more, all per 90.

In other words, the “unbelievable” star, as dubbed by Peter Crouch, might not be as clinical as the new Liverpool man, but he’s just as creative and in the right situation could cause as much chaos for opposition defenders.

Ultimately, while moving on Jackson might end up being a good idea, we can help but think Todd Boehly and Co may have made a mistake, especially given the comparisons to Isak.

West Ham eyeing Paqueta replacements despite late twist

Lucas Paqueta’s West Ham future was a topic right the way through the transfer window, and Fabrizio Romano suggested the Brazilian was set to complete a late move to Aston Villa.

However, the Brazilian re-affirmed his commitment to the club by kissing the badge in celebration, after bagging the second goal from the penalty spot in the 3-0 rout of Nottingham Forest.

It appears as though the 28-year-old could be getting back to his best, having already scored three goals in all competitions this summer, but the Hammers have their eye on a potential replacement ahead of the January transfer window.

According to a report from Caught Offside, West Ham have now joined the race for Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White, who was a major target for Tottenham during the summer window, with the north Londoners activating his £60m release clause.

The move fell through, and Gibbs-White extended his contract with Forest, but a move could still be on the cards this summer, with the likes of Spurs, Newcastle United and Aston Villa also monitoring developments.

The Hammers’ interest is thought to be tied to the uncertainty over Paqueta’s future, as they are preparing contingency plans in case the Brazil international leaves this winter.

Barca enter the clash weakened with Lamine Yamal sidelined due to a groin injury and in a race against time to be fit for the trip to the Spanish capital. Raphinha, Joan Garcia and Fermin Lopez are also missing out.

For Madrid, meanwhile, Dani Carvajal is out for around a month with a calf injury and Trent Alexander-Arnold is also sidelined with a biceps femoris injury. They’re not the only ones to watch on international duty, however. Anthony Elanga and Emil Krafth have both been called up for Sweden in a rapid reunion with Alexander Isak, who recently became Tyneside’s biggest villain by forcing a move to Liverpool.

Despite how he completed the move, Elanga wished his compatriot the best of luck at Liverpool – telling reporters: “Isak is a Liverpool player right now. I have the chance to play with him in the national team. He had a good career at Newcastle, but right now he is a Liverpool player. Good luck to him.”

Elsewhere, Bruno Guimaraes scored for Brazil against Chile earlier this week, Yoane Wissa has been called up for DR Congo, Will Osula is set to represent Denmark and big-money signing Nick Woltemade has already been involved for Germany.

Unlike Guimaraes, though, expensive arrival Woltemade was the talk of the town for the wrong reasons as Germany suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Slovakia.
