Dean Huijsen – not Trent Alexander-Arnold – is proving to be Real Madrid's most important summer signing

Los Blancos may have spent big on the Bournemouth centre-back but he already looks like a bargain buy for Xabi Alonso

Jude Bellingham calls him 'Spaghetti'. It is, admittedly, not the best or most fearsome nickname. Centre-backs should probably sound cooler, or, at least a little more intimidating. Pasta is, objectively, not the kind of thing that rattles the best strikers in Europe.

But look at Dean Huijsen, and it's oddly perfect. The guy is wiry thin. He does not look like a professional athlete. Everything about him – awkward stance, spindly legs, dorky demeanour – suggests that he should be doing pretty much anything else with his life. Yet Huijsen is a truly excellent centre-back, and at a time when Real Madrid really need one.

Most of the talk for Los Blancos over the last 18 months has been about the right-back they eventually signed, and how they would configure the attack. It didn't really occur to anyone – for some reason – that central defence might have been a far more pressing issue. Indeed, the centre-back pool appears frightfully thin. Antonio Rudiger is world class, but spent a lot of last season struggling with knocks. Raul Asencio isn't quite at the level required. Meanwhile, both David Alaba and Eder Militao are unable to stay fit.

Huijsen's signing, at the time, raised a few eyebrows. It seemed, in abstract, a Galactico purchase, a classic Madrid 'because we can' pinching of a top Spanish player. Yet a few weeks into the season, and he looks like not only Madrid's most important signing of the summer, but also the best. There is a long way to go – and others may yet improve. But for now, Huijsen's purchase looks something of a masterstroke from the Madrid hierarchy.

GettyA strange summer of business

It was a weird few months of transfers for Madrid. They were always going to go big around the Club World Cup. A trophyless season, the departure of a great manager, and an ageing squad meant that new faces had to be added. The Trent Alexander-Arnold saga inevitably dominated headlines. But Huijsen was always there, too, chugging along in the background.

His saga – such as it was – was a very modern thing. There is a trend these days of certain social media influencers turned journalists consistently piping out non-updates about players supposedly on the market. A new nothing Tweet about Huijsen popped up every day. One journalist, who seemed particularly in favor with the Spaniard, might have posted on X every time Huijsen went to the bathroom. He was simply everywhere, not really doing anything except maybe leaving Bournemouth at some point.

Madrid started to crop up more and more in transfer talk, though. And then, the pieces fell into place comfortably. It made too much sense, in the end. Madrid needed a left-footed centre-back. They likely wanted someone young. They also wanted a pretty-much sure thing to lead a refreshed squad. Throw in the fact that Huijsen plays for the Spanish national team, and it was a no brainer. €60 million (£50m/$68m) seemed a lot, but this is Madrid and they can afford these things. Huijsen arrived before the Club World Cup – a statement of intent to ensure that Los Blancos would compete in the United States (an attempt that admittedly aged poorly).

AdvertisementGetty ImagesWhy they signed him

Huijsen was an excellent bargain bin find for the Cherries. An outlay of £13m ($18m) wasn't exactly cheap for the club from the south coast. It's hard to find diamonds in the rough at Juventus, too.

However, Huijsen was far more effective than even the hipsters might have thought. He started his Bournemouth career by winning nine aerial duels in his debut, and never really looked back from there.

But it wasn't just his ability in the air that stood out. Sure, Huijsen was effective defensively – and that was more important than anything else. But it became clear rather quickly that he was also immensely refined.

Young ball-playing centre-backs are sometimes overvalued – such is their scarcity. But Huijsen established himself as an immensely cool presence. In other words, this wasn't just a tall guy who could pass a bit.

Huijsen had all of the traits of an elite centre-back at a remarkably young age. He was never going to be long for Bournemouth – something even he would later admit.

Getty Images SportOther competitiors

Huijsen also had plenty of suitors. Any centre-back of his calibre under 25 tends to be the envy of Europe. A Premier League switch might have made the most sense. After all, Huijsen had just played an excellent nine months of football in the league.

Liverpool were interested, presumably viewing Huijsen as a long-term replacement for Virgil Van Dijk – and potentially one of the best central defenders in the league for years to come.

Arsenal, too, were reportedly in the running. This is mostly because Mikel Arteta cannot resist young ball playing defenders of any ilk (they compromised on Bayer Leverkusen's Piero Hincapie shortly before deadline day).

Once Madrid were involved, though, things started to feel inevitable. There's something ominous about Madrid in the transfer market. Once they show an interest, they always seem to tie things up quickly.

Throw in the fact that everyone else had more immediate priorities – or pressing targets – and Los Blancos wrapped it all up within the first week of the transfer window opening.

And so far it has looked like excellent business. Xabi Alonso has heavily rotated Madrid in his early days as manager. But Huijsen's presence has been non-negotiable from the first Club World Cup fixture.

Some of that, of course, is brought about by necessity. Madrid are still short of depth, and will certainly rely on not-a-centre-back Aurelien Tchouameni to play centre-back at some point, given Alaba and Militao's injury issues and the fact that Rudiger is showing increasing signs of wear and tear.

Huijsen, then, was effectively the only fit option to run out there. The eye test is impressive. A couple of sloppy moments aside, he has been the epitome of class at the back, solid defensively and calm on the ball.

The numbers mostly back that up, too. Huijsen is in the 91st percentile among all centre-backs in progressive passes, the 96th in interceptions and 94th in clearances, according to .

Basically, while Madrid are still a bit imbalanced and leaky at the back, Huijsen is offering some steadiness and solidity.

A better move than Rodrygo: £100m winger "wants" to join Liverpool

Last week was very much Alexander Isak vs Hugo Ekitike. Liverpool flexed their muscles by telling Newcastle they were ready to put a £120m offer on the table for the Swede.

The Toon were steadfast, however, once again reiterating that the centre forward isn’t for sale this summer.

Consequently, the Reds raided Eintracht Frankfurt and stole Ekitike from under Newcastle’s noses. Eddie Howe’s men had made their own bid for the Frenchman but had to sit back and watch their Premier League rivals prise him away instead.

Having already signed Florian Wirtz for a club-record £116m, they’ve splashed out a further £79m on Ekitike. But, Liverpool’s efforts to improve the forward line might not be done there.

Does anyone fancy Rodrygo?

Liverpool could sign big-money Rodrygo alternative

While a deal for Ekitike is set to be formally announced in the not-too-distant future, rumours have surfaced suggesting Real Madrid winger, Rodrygo, is also on their radar.

The Brazilian has been the subject of interest from Arsenal this summer but reports last week suggested that the Reds have leapfrogged their title rivals in the race for the winger.

Real Madrid's Rodrygo

Liverpool have allegedly held their own talks to sign Rodrygo but whether a move is formalised remains to be seen.

Signing a winger is likely to depend on the future of Luis Diaz. Bayern Munich want to sign him but there is a difference in valuation right now.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

If that move does come to fruition, then perhaps Anthony Gordon might come on the radar again. The Anfield outfit have been linked with the Newcastle star religiously, and he’s very keen on the move.

That’s according to journalist Graeme Bailey. Speaking to TBR Football, he played up the chances of Gordon heading to Merseyside in the future.

“If Diaz goes, I wouldn’t rule Gordon out. I think if Diaz — the left-sided player — goes, Liverpool will bring someone in. Obviously, we know they’ve talked to Rodrygo, but Gordon is very much in that conversation for them.”

Bailey continued: “Gordon would walk to Liverpool — it’s his hometown club. He loves them. He wants to play for them. I think it’s inevitable Gordon will join Liverpool at some point — whether it’s this summer, next, or the year after. But I think he will end up at Anfield at some point.”

How Gordon compares to Rodrygo

It must be said that signing Rodrygo this summer, particularly when Arsenal are also interested, would be a phenomenal capture.

This is a player who scored as many as 19 goals in the 2022/23 campaign. He’s shone for Madrid and it’s only as a consequence of Kylian Mbappe and Vini Jr that he’s suffering from a lack of game time.

That’s certainly nothing to be ashamed of. That said, while Rodrygo has put in some fine performances on the continent, he’s not accustomed to life in English football and would no doubt take time to get up to speed. With another raw prospect in the form of Ekitike arriving, it could well be argued that Liverpool will need someone more battle-ready if Diaz leaves.

Well, in Gordon, they’d certainly find their plug-and-play option. The England international has been valued as highly as £100m and has showcased why over the last two campaigns in particular, scoring 21 goals and registering 23 assists.

Gordon is very much a dual threat, possessing elite ball carrying and combining that with the ability to score goals and create.

Rodrygo does feel like a superstar. He plays for Real, after all. Yet, Gordon is a mentality monster. He wants to win at all costs and the fact he actually supports Liverpool will no doubt help him succeed at Anfield if a move happens.

Analysing the core metrics above, one thing is clear and that’s Rodrygo looks more explosive.

Yet, an element of context must be applied. The Brazil international has been playing for a more ball-dominant team and in amassing 11 more touches per 90 minutes, it’s understandable why the data is skewed in his favour.

Yet, when it comes to things like progressive passes and key passes, there really isn’t much of a difference between the two.

Interestingly, Gordon will offer you a lot more off the ball. He makes an extra ball recovery per 90 and aids his team’s cause with more tackles. His work rate is exemplary.

While both players could cost over £80m, perhaps it would be wiser to invest the money in a local lad who knows the division inside out.

Player determined to join Chelsea after Instagram hint, talks 'now advanced'

Chelsea have stepped up their pursuit of one player who’s now effectively ruled out every other destination this summer, according to reliable journalist David Ornstein.

The Blues are expected to be very busy in terms of both incomings and outgoings before the transfer deadline on September 1.

Enzo Maresca has already watched Kepa Arrizabalaga, Basir Humphreys, Noni Madueke, Marcus Bettinelli, Mathis Amougou, Djordje Petrovic, João Félix, Armando Broja, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Lesley Ugochukwu leave Stamford Bridge this summer, raising nearly £220 million transfer fees.

This has allowed Chelsea to balance out the squad and make room for key new additions, with UEFA pressuring the west Londoners to produce a ‘positive transfer balance’, or face an inability to register summer signings for next season’s Champions League.

With more also expected to depart, Chelsea are currently in talks to seal a few further incomings as BlueCo give Maresca their full backing.

Chelsea have been linked with RB Leipzig sensation Xavi Simons for a while now, and it looks like things are seriously heating up.

Maresca’s side are advanced in their talks and The Netherlands international has removed Leipzig from his Instagram bio – a clear indicator that his move to London is gaining traction with Chelsea reliably believed to be far down the line in negotiations.

Some reports even suggest that Chelsea have reached a “total agreement” for Simons and only the final details are to be ironed out, but this is yet to be backed up by the wider media.

Simons isn’t the only player who’s dropped hints about a potential move to Chelsea on Instagram, either, with Man United winger Alejandro Garnacho deploying similar social media tactics.

The Argentine boldly liked a post from Fabrizio Romano linking him with a switch to London, which is again seen as a clear suggestion that he wants to join them.

Tottenham and Aston Villa have been named as alternative landing spots for Garnacho who’s determined to leave Old Trafford, but according to Ornstein, Chelsea face zero threat from either of them.

Alejandro Garnacho rules out every other club but Chelsea

The reporter, in an update on X, states that Garnacho only wants Chelsea ‘or nothing’.

For The Athletic, Ornstein writes that talks are ‘now advanced’ for the 22-year-old, who’s effectively ruled out all other options but a switch to Cobham.

In a further boost for Chelsea, United have been forced to drop their previous asking price of £70 million to around £50 million, as per the BBC, so Maresca could see the exciting winger join his squad in a cut-price deal.

Garnacho’s public Red Devils fallout could be cause for concern over his attitude, but The Telegraph report that Chelsea are satisfied with his personality after conducting extensive background checks.

Keshav Maharaj ruled out of Pakistan ODIs due to adductor strain

South Africa left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj has been ruled out of the remainder of the ongoing ODI series against Pakistan. According to a media release, “scans revealed a left adductor strain”, with Maharaj having suffered the injury during warm-ups ahead of the first ODI on Tuesday.South Africa have named Bjorn Fortuin as a like-for-like replacement for Maharaj for the second and third ODIs against Pakistan.Maharaj had limped off just before the toss for the first game, and was last moment replaced by pace-bowling allrounder Andile Phehlukwayo in South Africa’s XI. The release further stated that Maharaj will be returning home to Durban “for rehabilitation and will be reassessed ahead of the first Test against Pakistan”.Maharaj’s injury adds to an already lengthy list of missing bowlers for South Africa. The hosts are already without Anrich Nortje (fractured toe), Gerald Coetzee (groin), Lungi Ngidi (hip), Nandre Burger (lower back), and Wiaan Mulder (broken finger). Moreover, Maharaj recently bowled South Africa to a final-day win against Sri Lanka in the second Test in Gqeberha, bagging 5 for 76 to trigger a batting collapse. In Maharaj’s absence, South Africa have spin-bowling options in Dane Piedt and Senuran Muthusamy to choose from for the Test series against Pakistan. Those with an outside chance of making it to the side include batting allrounder Neil Brand, who bowls left-arm spin, and had toured New Zealand earlier this year; legspinner Shaun von Berg, who also made his debut on the same tour; and left-arm spinner Tabraiz Shamsi, although he had last played first-class cricket in 2021.The first Test of the two-match series against Pakistan begins in Centurion on December 26. South Africa are one win away from making it to the final of the World Test Championship, where they are currently placed at No. 1 in the points table.

Eric Garcia confirms Barcelona contract extension talks to quell fears of free transfer

Eric Garcia confirmed he’s in talks with Barcelona over a contract renewal while hinting he could be a future captain at the Spanish club.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Garcia’s current contract with Barcelona expires in June 2026, which could leave him free to negotiate a move next season. To avoid that scenario, the club have already opened discussions to secure his future with an extension running until 2029. In a recent interview, Garcia confirmed the talks, revealing that Barcelona officials have initiated negotiations with his agent to finalise a long-term deal.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Barcelona brought in Garcia on a free transfer from Manchester City in 2021 after his contract expired. He spent two seasons at Camp Nou before moving on loan to Girona, seeking more game time after falling out of favour under then-coach Xavi. The defender also wanted regular minutes to stay sharp for the 2024 Paris Olympics. On his return to Barcelona, Garcia’s versatility quickly impressed new coach Hansi Flick. The German tactician deployed him in multiple roles, including at right-back to provide cover for the injured Jules Kounde.

  • WHAT GARCIA SAID

Speaking about the renewal, Garcia said: “Everything will be discussed soon. We've started talking about a renewal.”

When asked about potential captaincy in the future he said: “Captain? Who knows if I could be a candidate for captaincy in the future.”

Bassey 2.0: Rangers lining up deal for "strong and powerful" £3.4m star

Glasgow Rangers manager Russell Martin has confirmed that the club are looking to bring in more signings before the end of the summer transfer window.

The likes of Nasser Djiga, Thelo Aasgaard, Joe Rothwell, Oliver Antman, and Djeidi Gassama, among others, have already arrived at Ibrox, but the former Scotland international wants more.

This means that Gers supporters still have plenty to look forward to before September’s deadline, as the Light Blues look to build a squad that is capable of competing for the Scottish Premiership title.

One area that the Scottish giants are looking to add more quality to is centre-back, despite having already brought in Emmanuel Fernandez and Djiga this summer.

Rangers lining up move for new defender

A fresh report has emerged linking the Light Blues with a move for a new left-sided defensive option, who could come in as Martin’s own version of Russell Martin.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

According to RangersReview journalist Chris Jack, Rangers are lining up a move to sign Real Betis central defender Nobel Mendy this summer.

The reporter claims, however, that a deal is not ‘imminent’ for the left-footed titan, which suggests that the Gers are not close to bringing him to Ibrox, despite the club’s interest in snapping the youngster up to bolster their defensive ranks.

It was reported earlier this month that Real Betis are looking for a fee in the region of £3.4m for the 20-year-old talent, and it remains to be seen if the Light Blues are willing to meet the asking price.

What Nobel Mendy could bring to Rangers

The Real Betis defender could be a shrewd addition to the squad to fill a hole in the squad, as Rangers will not have a left-footed centre-back in the squad if Ben Davies and Clinton Nsiala, who have not been involved in the games so far, leave.

Calvin Bassey

Ridvan Yilmaz moving on would also leave Jefte as the only left-footed left-back option in the group, which means that a left-footed defender who can play left-back and centre-back would be perfect.

Bassey fulfilled that role perfectly for Rangers during his time at the club. The Gers swooped to sign him from Leicester City as a youngster, and he really made his breakthrough under Giovanni van Bronckhorst in the 2021/22 campaign, playing at left-back and centre-back almost alternatively.

Mendy, who was hailed as “strong and powerful” by writer Kai Watson, is a left-footed centre-back who can also play as a left-back, according to Transfermarkt.

This suggests that the 6 foot 2 colossus has the potential to be Bassey 2.0 for the Gers as another powerful, young, and versatile left-footed talent who can cover at left-back and centre-back when needed.

Rangers managerRussellMartinapplauds fans after the match

He has only played six matches at senior level for Real Betis, winning 100% of his duels in two LaLiga games last term, and that makes it difficult to gauge where the youngster is at from a quality perspective.

However, Rangers must see something in him if they are interested in bringing the defender to Ibrox for a potential fee of £3.4m, so their scouting work must have identified his quality in his academy performances in Spain.

Therefore, Mendy could arrive at Ibrox with the potential to be Bassey 2.0 for the club as another young and versatile star who could cover two positions, which would prevent the Gers from having to sign two separate players to fill those gaps in the squad.
