It has been the summer of red thus far and one which has seen Liverpool break the British-record transfer fee to sign Florian Wirtz. But FSG are not done there, with reports now suggesting they’ve got three more “concrete options”.

Whilst their interest came as a surprise initially, Jarell Quansah’s move to Bayer Leverkusen alongside the fact that Ibrahima Konate is into the final year of his current contract makes Guehi the perfect option for Arne Slot.

In one swoop, Slot could have Guehi, Virgil van Dijk, Konate and Joe Gomez to choose from in what would represent the best depth in that role in the Premier League, perhaps even European football.

However, even if the England international is top of Liverpool’s list of priorities, he is not the only name on their wishlist despite how much they’ve already spent. Reports are now suggesting that the Premier League champions have three more “concrete options” in mind.

Isak among "concrete options" for Liverpool

As reported by Sky Sports’ Florian Plettenberg, Alexander Isak, Victor Osimhen and Hugo Ekitike are “three concrete options” for Liverpool this summer after sporting director Richard Hughes completed checks on all of the forwards.

None of those stars will come cheap, however, which suggests that Liverpool could be ready to spend big once again. Just how much their hefty budget stretches will be the big question. Isak, for example, is reportedly unlikely to leave Newcastle United for anything less than £150m, whilst Ekitike has been priced at £85m and Osimhen at £64m, totalling the three out just shy of £300m.

If those at Anfield are able to splash out again then it is a case of simply taking their pick. Whether it’s Ekitike, Osimhen or Isak, all three would be instant upgrades on Darwin Nunez and all three would complete what is becoming a frightening squad for others to match around the Premier League.

The WBBL faces a potential squeeze on overseas player availability with the tenth season of the tournament starting just seven days after the T20 World Cup finishes in Bangladesh, but the reduced length of the competition will see a higher proportion of games in the evenings at primetime with greater use of technology.Nominations are currently open for the overseas draft which is expected to take place in early September – some clubs have already taken advantage of the new option to sign a player on a multi-year deal before the draft – and CA remains confident it will have a strong hand of overseas names, but the increasingly busy schedule may yet see some top stars consider their options.England’s Nat Sciver-Brunt, who made a late entry into last season’s competition with Perth Scorchers, told the BBC she won’t be making herself available this year.The WBBL has been trimmed to a 40-game regular season with three finals in a bid to manage the workload of the game’s leading players, but this season it has faced schedule pressure at both ends. Among the Glamorgan bowlers, only Timm van der Gugten emerged with any credit, the Dutch international seamer finishing with 2 for 98 from 22 overs on a day some of his teammates will want to forget in a hurry.Marnus Labuschagne and Sam Northeast summoned stiff resistance in an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 66 in the final session, but Gloucestershire nevertheless made inroads into the top order to reduce Glamorgan to 222 for 3 at the close, still 370 behind.All three results remain possible, but Welsh focus will, first and foremost, be upon trying to save the game when they resume in the morning. According to an update from the Sky journalist Florian Plettenberg on X, Weiss’ move to Burnley is now considered a “done deal” after an agreement was reached over a move to Turf Moor, with a medical up next on Monday.

Weiss will be an exciting signing for Burnley, with the German a talented young ‘keeper who has the ability to be a mainstay between the sticks for the Clarets for many years, as Plettenberg alludes to.

At just 21, he has already played 42 times for Karlsruher, keeping 12 clean sheets, and he has been capped for Germany across three different youth age groups, winning a total of six caps.

With huge doubts lingering over the future of James Trafford at Burnley – Newcastle United have continually been strongly linked with signing him – a top-quality ‘keeper needs to arrive this summer.

While the more cautious option could be to bring in an experienced head who has played in the Premier League before, it is refreshing to see the Clarets once again taking a punt on youth again, backing Weiss to be able to do the job.

Russell Martin will manage his first competitive game in charge of Glasgow Rangers later this month when his side take on Panathinaikos in the second round of Champions League qualifiers.

The Light Blues have already confirmed their squad list for the two-legged clash with the Greek side, with a number of summer arrivals to Ibrox expected to make their debuts.

Nasser Djiga, Emmanuel Fernandez, Joe Rothwell, Max Aarons, Djeidi Gassama, Lyall Cameron, and Thelo Aasgaard have all been named in the squad and could debut against Panathinaikos.

Rangers supporters may be looking forward to seeing some of the new players in action, as they look to move on from the 2024/25 campaign, which ended trophyless for the club.

Gassama is one of the players who fans may be most excited to see play in these two games, as the French forward is an exciting wide player who can provide quality at the top end of the pitch.

What Djeidi Gassama could bring to Rangers

The 21-year-old flanker has the potential to get supporters off their feet with his direct play on the wing, having ranked in the top 4% of his positional peers in the Championship for successful dribbles (66) last season.

Gassama likes to take on opposition full-backs to burst into space on the left wing, which then opens the space for him to make an impact in and around the box as both a scorer and a creator of goals.

As well as exciting supporters with his dribbling ability, the former Paris Saint-Germain youngster can also score goals and create chances at an impressive rate.

Whilst a tally of just one assist in the Championship last season does not suggest that he is going to be the next Ryan Kent, his underlying numbers paint a different picture ahead of his Rangers bow.

As you can see in the table above, Gassama ranked highly among fellow wingers in the division at creating chances and creating xA, which suggests that he was unfortunate to end the campaign with one assist.

This means that the new Gers signing could bring goals, dribbles, assists, and, of course, excitement to Ibrox with his performances for the club in the 2025/26 campaign and, hopefully, beyond.

Why Rangers should sign Pierce Charles

The Gers should push to get a deal done for Charles in the coming weeks because it would be a repeat of the blinder they played with Gassama, taking advantage of an unfortunate situation to land a potential bargain.

On paper, a £2.2m fee for a 21-year-old winger who produced exciting performances in the Championship last season looks like a fantastic piece of business by the club, as he is a promising player with a lot of room left ahead of him to grow and develop.

Charles presents a similar opportunity for the Gers, given that the report mentions that their financial situation has opened them up to the possibility of a sale, although it remains to be seen how much money they will have to spend on the EFL gem.

The 19-year-old goalkeeper only became the Sheffield Wednesday number one towards the end of last season, but he has been capped six times by Northern Ireland already.

The teenage sensation, who was described as an “amazing” player by former youth teammate Anthony Elanga, could be an upgrade on Jack Butland at Ibrox, if he can build on the promising form he displayed in eight games in the Championship.

As you can see in the table above, Charles has the potential to offer more to the team between the sticks as a shot-stopper, a claimer of crosses, and as a distributor.

His long pass accuracy, in particular, is an interesting statistic to highlight because it suggests that he is far more efficient at picking long passes out and executing them to get the team up the pitch, which may be useful when Martin wants his team to evade a press.

Butland is not as efficient with his long passing and that could lead to situations where Rangers are forced to cough up possession too often if the opposition try to press Rangers high and force the Englishman into launching it back to them.

Add in Charles’ superior shot-stopping statistics, which suggest that he could prevent more goals from being scored past him, and it seems as though Rangers could have a huge talent on their hands if they are able to bring him to the club.

Why Liverpool could sell Luis Diaz

Back at the start of the month, Diaz spoke of his future on Merseyside, spoke of discussions held with potential suitors. He called it a natural part of the transfer window, especially in the earlier stages. He’s right.

Barcelona have a historic interest that they tried to act on, but Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes retorted in the negative when they made their approach. Barca, it’s felt, don’t have the financial sway to meet FSG’s demands. Diaz is one of the best wingers in Europe, after all.

However, Bayern Munich do have some moolah lying about and have reportedly since made their own enquiry for the 28-year-old Colombian, who scored 17 goals and supplied eight assists for the English champions in 2024/25. Cody Gakpo is also on the German giants’ wishlist.

Diaz is entering the next-to-last year of his Liverpool contract, but he will only be sold if a fitting proposal is tabled. Something in the region of €80m (£68m), perhaps.

Should Diaz go, though, he’d need to be replaced.

Liverpool make contact for Luis Diaz replacement

It must be stressed that the probability of this one coming to fruition is low, but according to transfer insider Graeme Bailey, Liverpool are interested in signing Bradley Barcola this summer.

In fact, FSG have already made an official enquiry as they look to sign the silky Paris Saint-Germain star. However, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City are also keen on the winger, who has emerged as one of the leading forwards in Europe over the past year.

As such, PSG have responded to calls by stating the 22-year-old is not for sale. Though it’s not explicitly stated, Bailey suggests Liverpool would be willing to fork out another £100m this summer, while discussing the intrigue surrounding Barcola.

If one of Liverpool’s biggest talents in Diaz leaves, a fitting replacement will be needed to balance the output and ensure Mohamed Salah is not encumbered by even more responsibility than he carried last term, albeit to a title-winning effect.

Barcola could certainly be that man, for the rising star has proven himself capable of taking the step from good prospect to world-class superstar under Luis Enrique’s wing at the Parc des Princes, scoring 14 goals and supplying ten assists across just 27 league starts in 2024/25, creating 18 big chances and averaging 1.5 key passes per game, as per Sofascore.

Joining PSG from Ligue 1 rivals Lyon in 2023 for a €45m (about £38m) fee, Barcola has only gone from strength to strength in a Parisian shirt, principally fielded off the left flank but also having tasted actually on the right and in a central berth.

Were he to take Diaz’s left wing spot (with the possibility of acting like the more experienced man in a false-nine-type role), Barcola would surely forge an incredible alliance with Wirtz, whose “generational” ball-playing quality – as has been commented on by journalist Chris Stonadge – would see the Frenchman picked out in promising position with frightening regularity.

Moreover, Wirtz’s off-the-ball intelligence is an impressive thing too, and as Barcola utilises his rapidity down the wing, the Germany international can weave into space and collect a pass, strike on goal.

Wirtz will bring creativity and a bouncing athletic style to Anfield, but Barcola would magnify that and then some through his fleet-footedness and electric dribbling, ranked as he was among the top 7% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe’s top five leagues last term for goal contributions, the top 9% for progressive carries and the top 7% for goal-creating actions per 90, as per FBref.

Think Diaz, but even more energetic, even more potent in the final third. Barcola will collect the ball and move into the danger area at breakneck pace, making inroads into enemy defensive territory after sweeping passes from, you guessed it, Wirtz.

Bagging the German is incredible enough for Slot’s project, but if a budding superstar in Barcola can be signed as well, there’s no telling how bright the future might be for the Premier League champions.

PSG might have issued an emphatic no to hungry suitors, but that hardly means a move couldn’t be brokered, particularly if his reported £100m price tag is met.

Any move for Barcola hinges on Diaz’s (or Gakpo’s) summer sale, and if such an eventuality does come about, Barcola might just be the perfect replacement.

He’s yet to realise his potential, and he’s already “one of the best wingers in the world”, as has been said by analyst Ben Mattinson. Liverpool need to get it done.
