Captain Pooran, rookie Mayank dominate middle overs as LSG get off the mark

Justin Langer has arrived in the IPL. It took just one game of tired old T20 cricket, and the consequent heavy defeat of course, for Lucknow Super Giants to burn that book of conservative T20 cricket and play with much higher intent. As a result they didn’t have the ideal players operating in the death overs of each innings, but they had done enough damage in the middle overs on both occasions to win by 21 runs. The 103 that LSG scored in the middle overs is the second-highest in their history; both the efforts featured Nicholas Pooran and Marcus Stoinis batting a higher number of balls unlike in the first match when they were held back for the death overs. With the ball, LSG unleashed Mayank Yadav’s extreme pace – highest being 155.8kmph – and awkward bounce to take five wickets for 84. As it turned out, they lost out on some runs in the final few overs and had to bowl Krunal Pandya in the 19th, but the game was over by then. The first step – either made easier by a quad strain or a huge tactical move considering how it is near-impossible to remove Indian captains – was to give the captaincy to Pooran, leaving KL Rahul with just batting responsibilities.

The enterprising start

It would be indulging in pop psychology to say if that meant Rahul batted with more intent because he had only one field to make an impact in, but the change was there for all to see. Having taken the dew on by batting first, LSG needed all the intent from everyone. Rahul began attacking from the fourth ball he faced, didn’t stop after hitting a six and a four in the next over, and Quinton de Kock batted the way he usually does. The intent might have resulted in two wickets but LSG managed 54 runs in the powerplay.

Pooran, and best-laid plans

The first two overs after the powerplay suggested it might be difficult to take down spin, but in the third, Stoinis, batting much earlier than in the last game, punished Rahul Chahar’s errors in length brutally with two sixes, and got out trying for a third six in the same over. The introduction of Pooran as early as in the ninth over meant Kings took off both their spinners despite Harpreet Brar’s four-run first over and a decent record against left-hand batters this IPL.Two overs in, it was plain why spin was taken off. Pooran slogged a wrong’un from Chahar over the longer boundary for a six followed by a cut for four in front of square and then just a nonchalant loft back over his head for another six.

The slightly slower finish

This kind of batting can, at times, result in wickets. LSG had played only three overseas players in the first XI so their choice of the fourth would be between Ashton Turner and Naveen-ul-Haq. When de Kock fell in the 14th over for 53, or when Pooran did in the 16th for 42, LSG didn’t make any panicked move, trusting Naveen over the limited marginal impact a batter could make over Krunal and Ayush Badoni.Krunal did his part of the job well by scoring 43 off 22. The last nine balls got LSG only 10 runs, but they had effectively decided the extra runs they could have got off such deliveries was not worth giving up middle-overs runs for.Jonny Bairstow and Shikhar Dhawan put on a 102-run opening partnership•BCCI

Kings set off running

Under the lights, a bit of dew, and nice medium pace to work with, Shikhar Dhawan and Jonny Bairstow made a quick start to their chase, taking 61 in the first six overs. Dhawan got to a fifty off just 30 balls, the exact required rate to win the match. Like Stoinis did after the spin slowdown in the first innings, Bairstow broke the shackles with two sixes off Bishnoi in the ninth over.

Enter Mayank Yadav

Langer is not the only who “arrived” on Saturday night. Mayank is a 21-year-old fast bowler from Delhi who has had to struggle with injuries. LSG scouted him and looked after him while he was injured during the Ranji Trophy season. When they unleashed Mayank, Kings needed to go at pretty much the same asking rate as at the start of the innings and had all their wickets in hand. They weren’t quite prepared for the unerring pace of Mayank, though. He kept bowling uncomfortable lengths, went past 155kmph, and took out three batters, all three with the short ball, all three late on the shot. Bishnoi did his job at the other end, bowling the 11th over for just three. Mohsin Khan kept the pressure up. An injury to Liam Livingstone, which reduced him to hobbling between the wicket, didn’t help Kings.Dhawan went from 50 off 30 to caught on 70 off 50. He later acknowledged how he tried to use Mayank’s pace by moving around, and Mayank immediately started bowling yorkers at the stumps.LSG kept going for wickets, which is acknowledgement that even the best can get hit at the death so they are probably better off bowling in phases that have more correlation between quality and outcomes. By the time that they went to that one “weak” over, LSG had 48 to defend in the last two. Krunal conceded only seven.

Labuschagne, Carey under scrutiny as Australia's batting questions remain

Both captain Pat Cummins and coach Andrew McDonald want the team to be more ruthless in the third innings

Alex Malcolm04-Mar-20242:12

Cummins: Green as sharp as I have seen him

Pat Cummins is adamant that Marnus Labuschagne is under no pressure for his place despite a lean run of form, but Australia’s batting order is facing increasing scrutiny after letting an opportunity slip to bury New Zealand at the Basin Reserve.Australia started their second innings 204 runs in front and even with the double failures of Labuschagne and Steven Smith on the second evening they led by 319 at one stage on day three with six wickets in hand. But a collapse saw them bowled out for just 164 and gave New Zealand a chance to chase 369. It was still 172 too many with Nathan Lyon taking six wickets, but the win does not paper over the disappointing batting display. Cameron Green’s first-innings 174 stood alone.Related

Labuschagne’s form has become a point of focus. In his last three Tests, he has posted 10, 1*, 3, 5, 1 and 2. His career Test average has dropped below 50, having been above 60 in December 2022. But Cummins insisted there was no pressure on Labuschagne’s place at No.3.”Absolutely not,” Cummins said. “I think he’d be the first to admit he’d like to score some more runs. And it’s not through lack of trying in the nets. I think particularly that second innings was just one of those ones down leg. We’re very clear that these six guys are the six best batters in Australia and although at times they might not have clicked altogether at once the story of our team has been someone’s being able to stand up when they need to.”Australia only have one spare batter with the squad in New Zealand, Matt Renshaw, and were never likely to make a change unless there was an injury, regardless of the result in Wellington.Marnus Labuschagne’s thin pickings continued when he was caught down the leg side in the second innings•Getty Images

Australia coach Andrew McDonald also said there was no major alarm with Labuschagne’s form but he wanted to see more of the positive intent he showed in the second innings rather than what he produced in his 1 off 27 balls in the first.”I don’t think there’s any great concern from our point of view,” McDonald said. “We want the top six, seven batters to be performing as a collective. So I think while the rest are performing around that and you’re winning games of cricket, I think the concern levels are fractionally lower.”Can he perform better? No doubt about that. Does he know that? He knows that. Is he working on it? Yes.”Over time there’s going to be some ebbs and flows in your career. And I thought in the second innings, and this is really hard to sort of quantify, but I thought the intent and the energy he brought to the crease, and that was only two runs so I don’t want to get carried away with two runs, but that’s what we see when he’s at his best.”We saw that at Sydney [against Pakistan] in the second innings as well. We saw that in Manchester as well where he came out there and he had the intent to score and put it back onto the bowlers. So that’s when we think he’s at his best.”There is also growing pressure on Alex Carey. His Test average has dipped below 30 after twin failures in Wellington, although he did make an excellent half-century in his last Test against West Indies. McDonald admitted the manner of Carey’s dismissals at the Basin Reserve, where he holed out to cover twice, would be discussed.”They’re going on at the moment,” McDonald said. “He’s disappointed with that as a method to Glenn Phillips. He’s encouraged himself to play off the back foot. It’s an error in judgement. I think we’re not going to hang him on one innings or two innings. Over a period of time, we’ll see how that plays out.”Overall, McDonald noted that the batting group could improve as a collective, particularly when they were in front in the game.”We feel like we can be better,” McDonald said. “We feel as though at times we have underachieved with the bat which has left games open and it’s probably more particularly in the third innings of games.Alex Carey’s decision-making with the bat has been called into question•Getty Images

“I think if you go back across the last 12 months, we’ve had some chances in the third innings to really shut out the opponent and we’ve left the door ajar at times and potentially we’ve probably been in a hurry to get to the total that we think we should get to and then get the game moving forward.”In this game, we played some shots that were probably up tempo for what the surface was going to allow. But we encourage our players to expand and apply their own method. And then it’s just about reviewing that at the end of the game. So we left the door slightly open but as we saw there in the context of this game, the surface was offering plenty and it was difficult to bat.”Australia lost Tests in Delhi and Headingley last year with third-innings collapses when they were in front in the game. They also had third innings collapses at Lord’s and Melbourne but were able to steady and win the game as they did in Wellington. Cummins wanted his batters to be more ruthless.”I think it’s something we can get better at, the whole 11 batters, particularly around that third innings where the game seems to speed up a little bit,” he said. “I think when we’re at our best, especially at home, it’s [being] ruthless, setting them 600, 650. I think it’s something we can look at.”

Kathryn Bryce: 'Hopefully it's a good reset for Cricket Scotland'

Scotland Women’s captain hopes T20 World Cup coup can “be a big kick-starter for cricket” in her country

Valkerie Baynes08-May-2024The silence told the story… not so much that it was there but where it was coming from.Kathryn Bryce, Scotland’s captain, had just removed dangerous Ireland openers Amy Hunter and Gaby Lewis within the first five balls of the match and, by the time the favourites were five wickets down for just 25 runs at the start of the seventh over, Bryce had claimed four of them.It was a collapse from which Ireland would never fully recover and, needing just 111 to secure a first appearance for Scotland Women at any World Cup, opener Megan McColl and Bryce mowed down most of the target between them, the latter bringing up victory with a four – and making history.”There was probably a bit of silence almost and they can be quite vocal from the sidelines,” Bryce tells ESPNcricinfo’s Powerplay podcast in which she recalls the impact of taking those early Ireland wickets. “But we had a huge amount of support as well. When you get a couple of early wickets in a really important match like that, it can stun a team a little bit.”The way that Megan started off the second innings was absolutely incredible, so when I went out there to bat, it was literally just trying to finish off the game and I was just saying, ‘don’t think about what’s coming, don’t think about it, just score the runs’. So when we got those winning runs at the end, it was just, I think the relief and just hard to switch off from that emotion of trying to ignore what was coming and realising what we’d actually achieved.”

Most observers saw Scotland’s victory in the T20 Women’s World Cup Qualifier semi-final as an upset with Ireland expected to join Sri Lanka in claiming the two qualifying berths for the tournament in Bangladesh in October. But not Bryce, the Player of the Series who ended up missing the final – won by Sri Lanka – with a minor niggle.Scotland had beaten Ireland in their most recent T20I to draw a two-match series in Desert Springs, Spain, in October and won the first of three ODIs between the teams immediately before that.”We were fifth in the rankings,” Bryce says. “The way that we’ve played over the last year or so, we’ve managed to beat Ireland a couple of times and they’ve beaten us as well so we knew it was going to be a really close-fought game, but we had the ability to really compete with them.”Bryce points out that it is testament to the growth of the women’s game that the points tables in both qualifying groups were tightly contested at the top. UAE pushed Sri Lanka in the other semi-final before losing by just 15 runs and Vanuatu shocked Zimbabwe on the opening day of the tournament despite being ranked 18 places lower and having to crowdfund their own playing kit and equipment in the lead-up.Scotland’s achievements are also significant in the context of a sport that was largely broken a year ago, facing financial difficulty and reeling from a report in July 2022 which found Cricket Scotland to be institutionally racist. It was only in March of this year that another report found a “high degree of prejudice towards female staff and players” within the organisation. When it comes to efforts around making the game more inclusive, the adage about needing to see it to be it often arises. Now that they are about to step onto the world stage for the first time, this Scotland team have a chance to live that out.Related

“A lot of people say it’s the access for people to be able to watch the game and see their teams out there playing,” Bryce says. “So I think for the girls in Scotland be able to watch a World Cup, which is the most televised event for the women’s game, and actually see a team from Scotland there and performing, and seeing people from where they’re from competing in that competition, is going to be really important.”It’s starting to become more popular in schools and getting out to a lot more state schools as well, which is really important. I think that growth is really there and there’s a big push as well to make women’s clubs more accessible and enjoyable, for people to want to go to and then also stay when they get there.”Hopefully it’s a good sort of reset for Cricket Scotland, to build and be able to rebuild a lot of those branches. I think for the women’s team to be there and leading the way on that, showing and developing, that’ll be a big kick-starter for cricket in the country.”Bryce also hopes her team’s World Cup appearance attracts complete newcomers to cricket, which she says still relies heavily on players having a family connection to the sport. That was the case for Bryce and younger sister Sarah, Scotland’s wicketkeeper who was batting at the other end as Kathryn struck the winning runs against Ireland. But while their father played the game, and their mother had grown up supporting Lancashire while living in England’s Lake District, there were other role models who had a big influence. The girls started playing in school and in their grandmother’s garden, trying to emulate their namesakes, retired England bowler Katherine Sciver-Brunt and wicketkeeper Sarah Taylor, using a snow-pea vine trellis as the stumps.Right there in the backyard, they could see it… now they get to be it.

David Bedingham beds in to help Durham put Hampshire game to sleep

Visitors bat through day three to close 93 behind with two wickets still standing

ECB Reporters Network12-May-2024

David Bedingham’s century provided the bulwark for Durham•Getty Images

David Bedingham cruised to his second Vitality County Championship century of the season to keep pace with Division One’s leading run-scorers. Durham batter Bedingham has 490 runs so far this season – sitting just behind Alex Davies, Joe Clarke and Daniel Bell-Drummond – and boasts an average of 81.66 after a serene 144 against Hampshire.Liam Dawson got through the most overs he had bowled in an innings – 62 so far – and was rewarded with his 11th five-wicket haul.Hampshire still lead by 93 runs, as Durham totted up 410 for 8 in response to 503, and unless something remarkable happens this fixture is heading for a third successive Utilita Bowl draw.Bedingham has passed 1000 first-class runs in two of the three full seasons he has played for Durham – and you would fancy him beating those efforts of 1029 in 2021 and 1019 last year. This was also his 14th century for Durham, across all formats, but with the placid nature of the pitch, this must rate as one of the easiest to reach. The occasional “loose cobbles” – as Peter Siddle had described them – became rarer on day three for the spinners, while the fast bowlers were forced to toil away with straight fields to defend runs. That isn’t to deprecate Bedingham’s efforts. He constantly felt on top and in a comfortable rhythm throughout his six-and-a-half-hour stay at the crease.Bedingham forged partnerships with whoever fancied sticking around. Alex Lees had added 97 with him on day two. Nightwatcher Matthew Potts bit into an hour-and-a-half of day three with 70 runs alongside Bedingham. Potts, who scored an unbeaten 149 in a similar role earlier in the season, didn’t look out of place batting at No. 5 and scoring 34 before he chipped Dawson to midwicket.Ollie Robinson had his record of scoring a half-century in every innings this season ended two overs later when Dawson bowled him with a beauty that spun across the right-handed batter and kissed his off stump. But Graham Clark joined up with Bedingham to ease Durham away from any worries of failing to avoid the follow-on – becoming the first pair to a century stand, having seen seven fifty partnerships previously unconverted in the match.Bedingham moved to a 193-ball century with a caress through the off side, before celebrating a few overs later with four consecutive boundaries off Kyle Abbott. The only true negative of his innings was pushing Clark through for a single, only for James Fuller to hit directly from fine leg to end the 111-run stand.Brydon Carse was dropped on 10 but caught at point on 18 to hand Dawson his fifth. It was the left-arm spinner’s sixth five-for since the start of last season, although by far the hardest he’d had to work. Felix Organ’s offspin was also seen more than it had before – 40 overs – and he was recompensated by finally seeing off Bedingham, caught behind with a hint of spin.Ben Raine and Callum Parkinson continued to close – with only 264 runs scored in a quiet day.
