Debutant Hlubi sets up series-squaring win for South Africa

Captain Wolvaardt’s unbeaten 49 drove the chase after Bangladesh were kept to 94 for 6

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Dec-2023A sensational opening burst from debutant Ayanda Hlubi coupled with Masabata Klaas’ discipline set South Africa up for a series-levelling win in the last women’s T20I against Bangladesh in Kimberley. South Africa restricted Bangladesh to 94 for 6 and then romped home by eight wickets, thanks to captain Laura Wolvaardt’s unbeaten 49.Opting to bowl first, Hlubi struck on her fourth ball in international cricket, getting Murshida Khatun caught behind in an attempted drive. On the very next ball, she had Sobhana Mostary caught at slip, courtesy late outswing off a full ball outside off. After Shamima Sultana also fell inside the powerplay – leaving Bangladesh reeling at 17 for 3 – Bangladesh almost shut shop. They added only 12 runs in the next 29 balls to be 29 for 3 at the ten-over mark. Lata Mondal and Nigar Sultana added 29 runs off 55 balls before the latter fell.Shorna Akter then injected momentum into the Bangladesh innings as they scored 26 in the 16 balls after Nigar’s dismissal. Shorna, who picked up a five-for in Bangladesh’s win in the opening T20I, scored 23 off 16 in the 31-ball 46-run stand for the fifth wicket with Mondal. She was run-out in the last over before Mondal, who top-scored with 42, was bowled on the final ball of the innings. In the 95-run chase, Tazmin Brits attacked spinner Nahida Akter by using her feet even as Wolvaardt began steadily. The pair added 35 inside five overs before Brits was adjudged lbw off Marufa Akter, even though the ball appeared to be heading down leg.Offspinner Shorifa Khatun then got one to spin back in sharply to trap Anneke Bosch, who hit a half-century in the first T20I, lbw for nine. But Wolvaardt and Sune Luus ensured South Africa faced no further hiccups in their bid to square the series. Wolvaardt was only helped by Shorna bowling three loose balls, including a no-ball, all of which she despatched to the ropes to hasten the end.The hosts had lost the opening T20I and the second one was washed out.

'Soccer should be for everyone' – U.S. Soccer, American Outlaws partner to make tickets less expensive, more accessible for fans

U.S. Soccer and the chief supporters group came together to lower ticket prices for U.S.-hosted matches over next year

U.S. Soccer partners with supporters group on accessibilityU.S.-hosted matches will have tickets capped at $45 in AO sectionGold Cup attendance dwindled this summer, pricing was a concernFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

The American Outlaws, the primary supporters group for the U.S. national teams, have partnered with U.S. Soccer to make the game more accessible, the organization announced Tuesday.

Tickets for all U.S. Soccer-hosted matches – including both the men's and women's teams – through October 2026 will be capped at $45 (plus fees), and the tickets will be directly sold by American Outlaws to members of the supporters group.

“We’ve always believed soccer should be for everyone,” said Justin Brunken, co-founder of AO. “This partnership with U.S. Soccer helps eliminate one of the biggest barriers – cost – and makes it possible for more passionate fans to stand, sing, and support together.”

AO aims to help eliminate reselling, scalping and bolster their communication efforts while offering streamlined support.

"This isn't just about saving a few bucks. It’s about keeping soccer grounded in community,” Brunken said. “AO was built to bring people together. This gets more people in the stands and more voices behind the team.”

The price changes arrive ahead of a big year for U.S. Soccer, with the 2026 FIFA World Cup – to be co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico – less than 12 months away. That said, the price agreement only includes U.S. Soccer-hosted matches, meaning the $45 ticket will not be issued for matches during next summer's competition, as FIFA manages the ticketing process for the competition.

The USMNT played in the CONCACAF Gold Cup this summer, and an uneven turnout from fans across the competition raised concerns over ticket accessibility, including some saying they were priced out of games. For the USMNT's match against Trinidad and Tobago, only 12,000 fans attended, with 11,727 at their match against Saudi Arabia.

The USMNT will play four international friendlies across September and October. The USWNT have not yet announced any additional friendlies for 2025.

Across the Group Stage of the Gold Cup, the competition averaged 19,000 fans per game, a 32-percent decrease from an average of 28,055 in the 2023 tournament.

Henriques, Hughes stun Scorchers to seal last-ball win for Sixers

Daniel Hughes and Moises Henriques inspired Sydney Sixers to an extraordinary run chase at Optus Stadium to stun defending champions Perth Scorchers and lift into the coveted second place on the ladder.Sixers appeared to be cruising to victory at 181 for 3 with two overs left, but then collapsed until skipper Henriques kept his cool in a nerve-jangling final over.Needing 13 runs off the final over, Henriques blasted a six off opposite number Aaron Hardie on the fourth ball and then hit a boundary off the last ball – with one required – to get Sixers over the line in dramatic fashion.Sixers will face table-toppers Brisbane Heat in Friday’s Qualifier on the Gold Coast with both teams having the safety net of a double chance. It was a costly defeat for Scorchers, who will host an elimination final against surging Adelaide Strikers on Saturday.Laurie Evans had signed off from his BBL stint in style with 72 off 34 balls to ignite Scorchers in the high stakes blockbuster between the competition’s powerhouse teams. Scorchers’ total of 197 for 4 seemed enough on their favoured ground, but Hughes blasted 74 off 43 balls to leave the match on a knife’s edge.Hughes holed out to Hardie in the 15th over with Sixers still needing 52 runs for victory. The momentum changed when Henriques blasted 10 runs in two deliveries off seamer Andrew Tye in the 17th over as Sixers edged ahead. In another late twist, with Sixers needing 17 off 12 balls, wicketkeeper Josh Inglis held onto a spectacular catch running back to the boundary to dismiss Jordan Silk and ignite a collapse where the visitors lost four wickets in the span of eight balls. But Henriques stepped up and Sixers had the added satisfaction of ending a poor recent record to Scorchers, who had won six of the past seven matches between the teams.Scorchers’ bid for a historic three-peat now has to go through the long way and they face the tough task of replacing the dynamic middle-order batter Evans, who departs Perth tomorrow for the UAE’s ILT20.Scorchers had elected to bat in warm conditions with players undoubtedly grateful of a later start time compared to the last match at the ground between Scorchers-Heat played in the early afternoon amid oppressive heat.Scorchers will need to address their top-order woes which again reared. Opener Sam Whiteman has not got going this season, but hit a first-ball boundary and looked fluent playing traditional shots down the ground.Laurie Evans played another superb innings•Getty Images

He became bogged down attempting cavalier strokes, as disaster struck for opening partner Steve Eskinazi who was forced to retire hurt due to a finger injury.Eskinazi sought medical attention at the end of the third over before having a life after resumption when Moises Henriques dropped a chance at midwicket. But Eskinazi immediately trudged off the field with Whiteman dismissed on the next delivery after being strangled down the leg side from recalled seamer Jackson Bird.It brought together Josh Inglis and Aaron Hardie, who have been used to rescuing Scorchers and they enjoy batting together. Inglis made a statement by smashing offspinner Todd Murphy for a first ball boundary in the eighth over, but he fell later in the over after a faint edge was well juggled by wicketkeeper Josh Philippe. But it brought to the crease in-form Evans, who started cautiously before electing to take the power surge in the 12th over. Evans has stated his liking for taking the power surge early in his innings and he proved why by pummelling left-arm seamer Hayden Kerr for 28 runs in the 13th over.Evans was all over Kerr’s rather innocuous pace as he peppered the boundaries and feasted on deliveries whether pitched up or short. Along the way he motored past his half-century off just 22 balls to earn strong applause from the 33, 412 crowd.Evans and Hardie smashed 41 runs in the most profitable power surge this season by any team. Evans continued on his merry way until holing out in the penultimate over where he walked waving his bat to a standing ovation from his ever-growing legion of fans. The jubilant Scorchers faithful were in a mood for celebration, but the night ended in despair and unfamiliar heartbreak for them.

Faz parte do passado. A gente vai abraçar o projeto e vamos colocar a Portuguesa onde ela deve estar – completou Mazola Júnior.

A Portuguesa é gigantesca!

Henriques' 95 holds NSW together as WA lose Kelly to injury

Skipper pulls NSW out of trouble as Paris and Rocchiccioli took three wickets apiece after the loss of Kelly to a pec injury

Skipper Moises Henriques capitalised on a shorthanded Western Australia attack after quick Matt Kelly suffered a pectoral muscle injury in his return as New South Wales fought back on day two of their Sheffield Shield clash in Perth. In reply to WA’s first innings of 256, NSW were in major trouble on a green-tinged WACA surface at 106 for 5 but Henriques led from the front with a determined 95 off 210 balls. NSW trailed by just 12 runs at stumps with three wickets in hand.Henriques looked set for his first century of the Shield season, but in a late twist he was adjudged caught behind off seamer Charlie Stobo although replays suggested the ball hit his pad.Kelly only bowled seven overs before he went off the field. Left-arm quick Joel Paris and offspinner Corey Rocchiccioli carried the load and claimed three wickets apiece.Kelly is unlikely to bowl again in the match leaving WA limited in their bowling options having gone into the match without allrounders Cameron Green and Aaron Hardie, who are playing in the West Indies ODI series.Tensions escalated late in the day’s play when WA appealed for obstructing the field after Stobo – having gathered the ball back in his follow-through – threw the ball in the direction of the stumps seemingly in an attempt to run out Chris Green, who patted the ball away. The umpires had a short discussion, but Green remained at the crease.”He [Green] basically just defended himself in terms of getting the bat down,” Henriques said. “I’m not sure what else he is meant to do. They [WA] are well in their rights to ask the question. I think the right decision was made.”After his superb century on day one, captain Sam Whiteman believed WA were in a position of strength as he predicted batting conditions would only get more difficult as the match progressed. His prognostication appeared on the money when Paris and Kelly bowled miserly lengths outside the off-stump with the new ball. There had been much excitement over the long-awaited return of Kelly, who had missed the entire domestic season due to a calf injury.Often overshadowed by Lance Morris and Jhye Richardson, Kelly has been a reliable performer in recent seasons and starred with six wickets in last year’s Shield final against Victoria.Kelly almost made the perfect start when his first delivery swung wildly off a length and close to the gloves of Ryan Hackney as wicketkeeper Josh Philippe completed a stunning diving take down the leg-side.But Kelly was left disappointed when his loud shout for caught behind was turned down before Paris took over with the wickets of Hackney and Dan Hughes to leave NSW in disarray at 13 for 2.Paris was relentless from the Lillee-Marsh stand end and continually hit a challenging length in an almost unplayable opening spell of 2 for 4 from six overs. There was no respite for NSW with Stobo bowling four consecutive maidens as the first-change bowler. NSW crawled to 29 runs off the first 21 overs with opener Blake Nikitaras anchored to the crease and struggling to rotate the strike. As he often does, Rocchiccioli entered the attack within the first hour and he immediately challenged left-handed batters Nikitaras and Matthew Gilkes with bounce and turn. It was only a matter of time before Rocchiccioli broke through and he dismissed Gilkes and Nikitaras either side of lunch.Henriques started nervously and survived a couple of half chances before he settled alongside an attacking Ollie Davies, who hit three gorgeous drives off one over from Rocchiccioli. Davies raced to 21 before succumbing to Paris’ accuracy as he edged to first slip to leave NSW facing a big deficit on the first innings. But Henriques found support from allrounder Jack Edwards forcing Whiteman to revert to Hilton Cartwright, who played two Tests for Australia in 2017 as an allrounder but rarely bowls these days.He found zip off the surface and had confident lbw shouts on Henriques and Edwards, who eventually settled and looked untroubled after tea. They combined for a partnership of 83 before Rocchiccioli deceived Edwards with flight as he edged to slip. There had been a flurry of wickets late on day one, but Henriques held firm until just before the close as this see-saw of a match remains evenly poised.
