Maresca thinks he's "fantastic": Boehly must sell £30m Chelsea flop ASAP

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca gave supporters a reason to be excited during his first few weeks in the role after seamlessly transitioning into life in West London.

The Italian lost his first game against Manchester City but led the Blues to a six-game unbeaten run, looking like the biggest challengers to runaway leaders Liverpool at one stage.

However, in recent months, the side have endured somewhat of a drop-off in form, slipping to fifth in the Premier League and 21 points off Arne Slot’s side with just 11 games remaining.

Qualifying for the Champions League would be a huge success in his first season in charge, giving him a platform to build on for the coming years during his tenure at the club.

If he is to build off his recent success at the Bridge, he needs to invest well once again this summer, replicating some of the deals which he’s overseen during his first season in the capital.

The impact of Maresca’s signings at Chelsea in 24/25

Forward Pedro Neto joined Chelsea in a £54m deal from Wolverhampton Wanderers over the summer, looking to add further firepower to the club’s already potent forward line.

The Portuguese international has since registered five goals and six assists in his 31 games for the club, including a phenomenal strike against local rivals Arsenal at the Bridge.

Neto wasn’t the only forward to move to West London last summer, with Jadon Sancho joining the Blues on loan with an obligation to buy from fellow Premier League side Manchester United.

The 24-year-old looked as though he would be a shrewd addition after his cameo off the bench for his debut against Bournemouth, but his performance levels have rapidly declined in recent weeks.

The former Borussia Dortmund ace has failed to register a goal or an assist in any of his last nine outings, putting his starting place under the Italian at risk.

However, despite the form of the aforementioned duo, one other summer addition has failed to deliver – with Boehly brutally needing to offload the big-money signing at the next opportunity.

The player who Boehly needs to offload this summer

As seen by the previous arrivals during Maresca’s first window in charge, owner Todd Boehly put trust in the new boss to make the additions he wanted to take the side to the next level.

Dewsbury-Hall

Such trust saw the Italian raid his former club Leicester City and bring Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall with him to West London after his time with the midfielder in their Championship-winning campaign last time around.

The 26-year-old registered 12 goals and 14 assists in his 44 league appearances in 2023/24, impressing at the heart of the Foxes midfield and playing a pivotal role in their immediate return to the Premier League.

As a result, Boehly forked out £30m to prise him away from the East Midlands outfit, with Maresca labelling him “fantastic” after securing a move for his services.

However, Dewsbury-Hall has struggled to impress for the Blues since his transfer, unable to dislodge the likes of Enzo Fernández and Moises Caidedo from their starting roles at the heart of the side.

Chelsea's KiernanDewsbury-Hallin action with Southampton's Kamaldeen Sulemana

He’s only registered eight league appearances to date, with only one of which coming from a starting role and subsequently relying on Europa Conference League minutes to showcase his talent.

The midfielder has registered two goals and one assist in his eight European outings, but ultimately, he hasn’t demonstrated enough quality for a player who cost £30m.

Numerous rumours emerged over a potential move for Dewsbury-Hall in January, but the boss reiterated his desire to keep hold of the Englishman, but he’s only featured for 105 minutes since the closure of the window.

As a result, Boehly needs to be brutal over the summer and cut their losses on the former Foxes star, ultimately preventing the Blues from losing a small fortune on the fee they forked out for his signature.

It’s a shame that the move to the Bridge hasn’t worked out for Dewsbury-Hall, but he needs regular minutes to recapture his form, with the funds potentially helping Maresca improve the side in other areas to allow them to reach the next level.

Nottingham Forest plot bold move for £150k-per-week star as club slash price

Nottingham Forest are enjoying their best season in the Premier League for decades with Nuno Espírito Santo’s surprise outfit on course to qualify for the Champions League after a very memorable campaign, and they’re already making summer transfer plans to help maintain their lofty status.

Nottingham Forest praised after excellent Premier League campaign

Forest take on Brighton in the FA Cup quarter-finals this afternoon, and if they get past Fabian Hurzeler’s side, Nuno will have a trip to Wembley to add to his growing list of accomplishments at the City Ground this season.

An approach has been made this week.

ByCharlie Smith Mar 29, 2025

Only lead title contenders Liverpool have won more games than Forest this season, which is testament to the fine job done by Nuno, who’s also resurrected his managerial career after failed stints at Tottenham and the Saudi Pro League.

Nottingham Forest managerNunoEspirito Santo is seen before the match

His side are undoubtedly this season’s head-turning package that nobody expected, with the likes of Chris Wood, Morgan Gibbs-White, Murillo, Ola Aina and Matz Sels forming an impressive spine which rivals have seriously struggled against.

The flair of Anthony Elanga and Callum Hudson-Odoi, combined with Elliot Anderson’s reliability in midfield, has also seriously contributed to Forest’s race for Europe – and there is every chance Nuno’s side will do the unthinkable and finish in a top-four place.

If they manage to find themselves in next season’s Champions League draw, Forest could benefit from a major cash windfall, which may even greatly assist them in the transfer market.

If they’re to carry on at this level, Forest will need to reinvest into the squad and keep up their evolution. Reports suggest Sunderland midfielder Jobe Bellingham is a target for Nuno, following his excellent campaign with Sunderland in the Championship, while there are even rumours of a potential Forest move for Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres.

Nottingham Forest plan "audacious" move for Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz

Now, as per GiveMeSport, £150,000-per-week midfielder Douglas Luiz is back on Forest’s radar as well – after they expressed interest in January.

Douglas Luiz for Juventus.

Luiz, who bagged 10 goals and 10 assists for Aston Villa in all competitions last season before joining Juve in the summer, hasn’t exactly set the world alight in Turin and could now leave at a “reduced rate”.

That is according to GMS, which also writes that Forest are plotting an “audacious” move for Luiz as a result, and could well look to tempt him with a return to the Premier League just one year after he departed for Italy.

“Influential figures” at Forest are seriously considering an approach to the Brazilian, with Juve willing to sell for below £40 million after previously demanding north of that asking price.

Despite impressing for Villa last season, Luiz has started just three Serie A games during his time at Juve, with recently dismissed boss Thiago Motta seemingly not fancying the South American.

It is unclear whether Igor Tudor has different plans for Luiz, but Forest appear to be making their interest known ahead of the summer.

He earns way more than Isak: Berta must axe "frustrating" Arsenal star ASAP

Earlier this month, it was announced that Andrea Berta had agreed to become Arsenal’s new Sporting Director, and while he’ll be joining a team who have fought for the Premier League title three seasons on the bounce now, he’ll have a lot of work to do.

Mikel Arteta’s side are undoubtedly one of the very best in the country, but this season has proven that attacking reinforcements are desperately needed.

One of the stars most heavily linked with the club in recent months has been Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, although, with reports claiming he could cost up to £150m, it’d be a Herculean deal to get over the line.

That said, with several players set to leave this summer, a significant amount of the wage bill should be freed up, which could help the ownership secure the Swede’s services.

However, there is another star player who almost certainly won’t be leaving this year but should be one of the players Berta looks to move on as soon as possible, as they make more than twice as much as Isak.

Arsenal's decreasing wage bill

So, before getting to the player in question, it’s worth looking at how much Arsenal’s wage bill could decrease by this summer, with certain players’ contracts expiring and others potentially being sold.

Starting with those who are in the former group, it seems almost guaranteed now that Thomas Partey, who makes £200k-per-week, and Jorginho, on £110k-per-week, will be leaving the club at the end of June alongside Celtic-bound Kieran Tierney, who also makes £110k-per-week.

Raheem Sterling, who has been earning around £110k-per-week and Neto, who makes £50k-per-week, will also come off the wage bill when their loan spells end in the summer.

Finally, while there is a chance the club will fail to sell any of their fringe players in the transfer window, it feels increasingly likely that Oleksandr Zinchenko, who earns £150k-per-week, will finally be moved on, as he’ll have just a year left on his contract if not.

So, when you add together the wages of those who are out of contract, those on loan and Zinchenko, it doesn’t seem too far-fetched that Arsenal could reduce their wage bill by an astounding £730k-per-week before making any signings in the summer, which comes out to a massive figure of £37.96m per year.

Such an incredible sum of money being saved could help Berta and Co raise the finances needed to complete their summer transfer plans, although there is still another big earner in the club who needs to be moved on as soon as possible.

The Arsenal star Berta needs to sell

With a lot of Arsenal’s big earners either making good on their wage packets or mentioned above, it will likely come as no surprise that the player we are talking about is Gabriel Jesus.

The Brazilian forward joined the Gunners for around £45m in the summer of 2022, and while he was truly sensational for the first half of that season, he has not been the same player since suffering a serious knee injury at the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

Since then, it would be hard to argue that the former Manchester City star has been deserving of his enormous £265k-per-week wage when potentially world-class strikers like Isak are earning less than half of that, coming in at around £120k-per-week.

For example, while the Sao Paulo-born nine wasn’t bad last season, he was, as pundit Micah Richards put it, “frustrating,” as for all the silky footwork and innate skill he has, he was only able to muster up a tally of eight goals and eight assists in 36 appearances, which wasn’t enough to stop Kai Havertz eventually replacing him as Arteta’s go-to striker.

In contrast, the Toon star, who has endured his own injury problems, was able to amass a haul of 25 goals and two assists in 40 appearances and looks set to do even better this year, already hitting 23 goals and five assists in just 33 games.

For his efforts, the Gunners’ forward was only able to score seven goals and provide two assists in his 27 appearances before his ACL injury this season, which is what will keep him at the Emirates this summer.

However, once he is back to full fitness at some point in 2026, Berta and Co need to move him on as soon as they can, as not only is he no longer at the level required to push the team forward, but his bumper contract expires in June 2027, meaning the window to get a decent fee for him will be slight.

Ultimately, Jesus is an undeniably talented footballer, but his inefficiency in front of goal, poor injury record and monster wages mean that he has to be sold by Arsenal as soon as they get the chance.

Adil Rashid: Double World Cup winners are 'the best England squad that's ever been'

Spinner ready for return in Hundred, with focus on creating more history in India this winter

Andrew Miller25-Jul-2023Adil Rashid believes that England’s double-World-Cup-winning white-ball team already deserves to be remembered as “the best England squad that’s ever been”, but says they are not done with creating history as attention begins to turn to the defence of their 50-over title in India this winter.Rashid, 35, is one of the core members of a squad that came together in the wake of England’s humiliation at the 2015 World Cup in Australia, in which they were eliminated at the group stage of the competition. Since then, England have gone on to reach three finals and two semi-finals in five subsequent ICC global events, including memorable victories in the 2019 50-over World Cup, and most recently, the T20 version in 2022.Speaking at an event in Tottenham ahead of this year’s Hundred competition, Rashid – who has been struggling with a back injury and has not played since a two-match IPL stint for Sunrisers Hyderabad in April – insisted he was approaching full fitness once again, and was ready to get back to action with his eyes firmly locked on the prize.”I came back from the IPL with a bit of an injury, so I took that month off during the T20 Blast to get fully fit, and hopefully now I’m good to go,” Rashid said at the launch of the KP Snacks community cricket pitches initiative in Broadwater Farm.”It’s not just myself. I’m sure everybody going there, the whole squad will be ready and raring to go,” he added. “As defending champions, we’ll definitely go there with that mindset. It’d be very exciting times, but it will not be an easy challenge, especially in India in their backyard, where they are very strong.”We’ll definitely have to be our best as a unit, as a squad, but it’s something that we know we can achieve if we put our mind to it, and it’s something we’ll definitely be looking forward to.”The revival of England’s white-ball fortunes took a major step during their last World Cup campaign in India, in 2016, when – under the leadership of Eoin Morgan – the team reached the World T20 final against West Indies in Kolkata, only to come unstuck against Carlos Brathwaite’s volley of four sixes in Ben Stokes’ final over.Adil Rashid shows his legbreak to Kimberley Walsh of Girls Aloud fame during a Hundred sponsor’s event•CSMLast winter, however, Stokes and England made amends for that heartache with victory over Pakistan in the T20 World Cup final in Melbourne. Rashid also excelled at the sharp end of that tournament, claiming the best figures in the final of 2 for 22 in his four overs, to go alongside similarly frugal displays in a must-win group game against Sri Lanka, and a ten-wicket rout of India in the semi-final.”It’s something that, as a youngster, you dream of playing World Cups for your country, and winning,” Rashid said. “For a lot of us, that’s become reality as well, so that’s a moment you cherish with your team-mates, with your squad, your family members, your wife, your kids, your mum and dad … so that’s something that I’m sure we’ll all keep very close to us.”And we also know that there’s more to come as well,” he added. “We also believe that this is not the end of it. We have that mindset of, yes, let’s go beyond. Yes, we’ve created some kind of history, but we definitely want to push further on. Defending it and winning it again, that’s the mentality.”However, Rashid insisted that the greatness of this England team would not be determined by their success or failure in India this winter, because their legacy has already been cemented.”It already has, I reckon, has it not?” he said. “I mean, two World Cup wins, back to back, holding both. In terms of World Cup squads, from 2015 to this day, I don’t know if any England team has ever been any better in terms of winning series, in terms of going from No. 7 or 8 in the world, to No. 1.”So as a squad, from 2015 until now, that era, I think we’ve definitely got the best England squad that’s ever been.”Many of the lessons that the white-ball team learned from 2015 onwards have now bled into England’s Test squad, with the so-called “Bazball” era being defined by an aggressive mindset with bat and ball, and a focus on enjoyment. Such were the reasons why Moeen Ali – Rashid’s long-term England team-mate and close personal friend – was tempted out of red-ball retirement to answer the call for this summer’s Ashes, despite having played his last Test in September 2021.Related

Though Moeen’s decision came as a surprise to many, Rashid said he had not been taken aback by the news, especially after the pair had discussed the pros and cons of a recall. “Me and him, we talked over the phone, just having a chitchat, just that thing of ‘what do you reckon?’,” Rashid said.”You can imagine it, because Mo is a world-class cricketer, in that format and in all formats as well. He’s done it in the past, and when Leachy [Jack Leach] got injured, they wanted to have somebody who’s experienced, who’s been there before, who’s done it. For them to ring Mo, it wasn’t much of a massive surprise from my side.”Obviously the way they’ve been playing for the past year now, with that positive new brand of cricket with people going out there play with freedom, it’s very similar to the white-ball set-up. The skills are now very similar, that’s been shown over the past year, and the opposition has had to find a different way of countering that, which has been a real positive and a real good thing.”KP Snacks are funding 100 new community cricket pitches over the next three years. • WHAT HAPPENED?

The relationship between Gyokeres and his club has become increasingly strained in recent weeks, as speculation about the forward's future hots up. Now, a new potential starting point for the rift has emerged, with reports from the Swedish publication Sportbladet suggesting that inside sources leaked rumours about Gyokeres' surgery in order to dissuade potential suitors from trying to sign him.

    WHAT SPORTBLADET SAID

Revealing how the rift came about, the sports paper wrote that in May 2024, Gyokeres had minor knee surgery and it was agreed it would be kept quiet"But the day after the player and his representatives had a meeting with the club, it was leaked to Portuguese media that the procedure had been performed." It's been suggested that the purpose of the leak was to put off clubs interested in signing the Swede last summer.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Swedish forward has been in unstoppable form for Sporting, scoring an incredible 54 goals in 52 games across the 2024/25 season. His performances have understandably led to plenty of interest from other clubs, but delays over a potential move to a bigger outfit — with sides like Arsenal, Juventus and Chelsea all supposedly interested — have caused frustration, while Sporting hiking the fee they are willing to let him go for from £60 million ($81.5m) to £70m ($95m) has also annoyed Gyokeres.

    WHAT NEXT FOR GYOKERES?

The situation has become messy and the 26-year-old clearly needs a fresh start, but whether these recent complications will have a negative impact on interest from suitors remains to be seen. Arsenal's desperate need for a prolific out-and-out striker means they are likely to continue pursuing their man, but they may need to fight off interest from other clubs too.

Balderson's maiden first-class century illuminates grey day at Edgbaston

Warwickshire 197 for 5 (Rhodes 82, Mousley 45*) trail Lancashire 327 (Balderson 116, Bailey 75) by 148 runsGeorge Balderson’s maiden first-class century illuminated a grey second day as Warwickshire and Lancashire grind towards a draw in their LV=Insurance County Championship match at Edgbaston. On a cloudy morning, Lancashire all-rounder Balderson extended his overnight 94 to 116 out of his side’s 327 all out before the home side replied with 179 for 5.On a slow pitch, diligence has been required throughout from batters and Balderson showed plenty of it, spending 44 balls in the nineties before reaching his richly-deserved ton. Warwickshire captain Will Rhodes then showed similar resolve to compile 82 from 168 balls. With time lost to the weather on day two and a forecast suggesting little or no play on the fourth day, this match appears doomed to a draw already with batters forced on to the defensive by capable seam bowling on a slow pitch. After resuming on 295 for 7 on the second morning, Lancashire lost Tom Bailey for 75 to the second ball, lbw to a big inswinger from Hamza Mir. That concluded a partnership of 145 in 45 overs between Bailey and Balderson and when Will Williams quickly fell the same way, Balderson still required five runs for his maiden ton with just last man Jack Morley for company.Unlike at Lord’s in 1895, when Sammy Woods generously served up a deliberate leg-side full toss so that WG Grace could reach his hundredth hundred, Balderson was made to earn every run towards his milestone before he edged Olly Hannon-Dalby to the boundary at third.Morley stuck around while 30 were added and doubled his previous first-class run tally of nine before nicking a slog at Danny Briggs. In reply, Warwickshire’s openers fell in the first seven overs, both deciding too late to leave the ball as Alex Davies played on to Williams and Rob Yates edged Bailey behind. Rhodes and Sam Hain then added 68 in 28 overs either side of a rain break, Hain arriving into double-figures after 69 balls before falling, strangled down the leg side off Balderson, for 15 off 79.At 82 for 3, further quick wickets would have moved Lancashire into a strong position, but Rhodes and Dan Mousley batted watchfully to add 77 in 22 overs. Bailey continued his impressive match by trapping Rhodes lbw and Ed Barnard tickled Balderson down the leg side to the keeper but Mousley, after a skittish start, settled to play with authority and reach the close unbeaten on 45.
