Celtic battling 12 clubs to sign "very energetic" £45,000-a-week midfielder

Celtic are believed to be battling with 12 other clubs to complete the signing of a “very energetic” player on a pre-contract agreement in January, according to a fresh transfer claim.

Latest Celtic news

It was another good weekend for the Hoops in the Scottish Premiership title race, with Brendan Rodgers’ side easing to a 4-0 win at home to St Johnstone. Not only that, but Rangers could only draw 2-2 away to Motherwell, meaning the Hoops have now opened up a 14-point lead at the top of the table.

In terms of transfer news, Celtic are still being backed to do plenty of business in the January window, being linked with Chelsea midfield duo Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Carney Chukwuemeka. The pair have not started a single Premier League game between them this season, highlighting why a move away is likely to appeal to both.

Chelsea'sKiernanDewsbury-Hallin action

Talk of a Kieran Tierney reunion has also constantly been mentioned in recent weeks, and it looks like a transfer that could have legs, as the Hoops look to bring a former favourite back to Parkhead. He isn’t seen as a key player at Arsenal, so a fresh challenge needs to come his way, whether that be in January or at the end of the season.

There could also be outgoing transfer business at Celtic next month, with three clubs thought to be interested in signing Luis Palma, who is keen on sealing a move away from the reigning Scottish champions.

Celtic eyeing agreement with £45k-a-week player

According to a new report from The Boot Room, Celtic are one of 13 clubs interested in signing Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill, with a pre-contract agreement in January mooted, prior to him moving to Parkhead for free next summer.

Rivals Rangers are one of the other teams in the mix to snap up the £45,000-a-week ace, with Fiorentina, Lazio, Everton, West Ham, Crystal Palace, Brentford and Leeds United all also keen. Bologna, Udinese, Trabzonspor and Besiktas get a mention, too, highlighting the level of interest in him.

Josh Brownhill

Brownhill may not be the most spectacular midfielder around, instead being famed for his industry in the middle of the park, but he could be a strong signing by Celtic, and he has scored nine goals in the Championship this season.

Now 29, the Englishman possesses a wealth of experience, meaning he would come straight in as a key starter, and Lee Hendrie has lauded his ability in the past, saying: He’s very energetic, he’s very neat and tidy on the ball.

“He gets up and down the pitch well and you know what you’re getting when you’re getting a player from Burnley, Sean Dyche, what he expects. And, obviously, he’s proved that he can do this step up, coming from Bristol City, so I’d certainly take him all day.”

The fact that Brownhill will be available on a free next summer, with Celtic able to reach an agreement next month, makes his signing a no-brainer for Rodgers’ men, and it’s now a case of beating many other clubs to his signature.

Aston Villa have already struck gold on a star who’s worth more than Malen

Unai Emery will be praying that his Aston Villa side can soar up the Premier League rankings the more January goes on, after a topsy-turvy end to 2024.

Indeed, impressive wins over the likes of Manchester City and RB Leipzig last month were arguably overshadowed by poor displays against teams such as Newcastle United, with Emery’s side folding at St James’ Park in mid-December to lose 3-0.

Whilst there are rumours to suggest the Villans could be bringing in some new defensive recruits to help shore up things at the back, seen in Milan Skriniar’s name floating about, the Premier League side are also hunting down more firepower up top in the form of Donyell Malen.

Aston Villa's pursuit of Malen

While no club agreement has been secured – amid talk of a £25m fee – Villa look to have won the exciting Dutchman over after agreeing personal terms, according to journalist Ben Jacobs, with even more goals added to the West Midlands side’s game subsequently should a deal progress.

Already boasting both Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran in attack – who have a Premier League goal haul for the season that comes in at a combined 15 – Malen would just offer Villa another clinical head up top when at the peak of his powers, considering he fired home a ridiculous 55 strikes from 116 appearances when on the books of former employers PSV Eindhoven.

At Dortmund, away from predominantly lining up as an out-and-out striker in his native country, Malen has also excelled as a winger option down either flank, with 11 of his 13 strikes last season in the Bundesliga coming from the right channel.

Therefore, there is a tantalising future in sight where Malen gets to strut his stuff in England next to Watkins or Duran leading the line, as Emery goes about making his team even stronger to push up the league standings.

Jhon Duran and Ollie Watkins

However, even if a move for Malen was to unexpectedly fall through for whatever reason, Emery wouldn’t be too disheartened, knowing that this ace in his ranks is already worth more than the Villa target after becoming a superstar this campaign.

Morgan Rogers' market value at Villa

Rogers would cost the Villans an initial £8m to bring in last January from Middlesbrough, with the promising attacking midfielder having to cut his teeth in the EFL before getting his big shot in the top flight.

Formerly on the roster at Manchester City as a youngster, it’s clear now that Rogers was born to be an entertaining talent at the very top of the English game, with stunning displays becoming commonplace now from the 22-year-old.

Many a sweet strike has been fired home from the Villa number 27 so far this campaign, with Rogers up to six goals now in league action, on top of also collecting three assists.

Off the back of his standout start to the season, it was no surprise that Emery and Co wanted to tie Rogers down to a new extended contract, with an England senior call-up even coming his way off the back of his “fearless” displays, as he was labelled by football talent scout Antonio Mango in the past.

As a direct consequence of all of the above – alongside his crucial FA Cup clincher against West Ham United – the youngster’s price tag has now far exceeded his once modest £8m valuation.

He is now worth more than Malen’s £25m fee, despite so much talk centring on the Dutchman being a potential top buy for Emery’s men, with Transfermarkt estimating that the ex-Man City man is worth in the region of around £33m.

Looking at the table above, Emery has a whole host of players who are worth many millions away from just the rise of Rogers, with Malen perhaps boosting his team even more as they aim for another top-four finish.

As for Rogers, it’s clear that Emery and co have struck gold with what already looks to be a bargain signing.

King and Brown help Australia hammer Ireland

King and Brown took 5 for 18 between them as Ireland were held to 99 for 8 from 20 overs before Mooney and Lanning ran it down in 12.5 overs

Alex Malcolm17-Jul-2022Superb spells from Alana King and Darcie Brown have helped Australia thump Ireland by nine wickets in the second match of the Tri-Nation Women’s T20I series in Bready. After rain had washed out Australia’s march again Pakistan in game one, the world champions produced a near-flawless bowling display with King taking 3 for 9 and Brown bagging 2 for 9 as Ireland limped to 99 for 8 from their 20 overs. Just four Ireland batters reached double figures with Rebecca Stokell top-scoring with 22.Beth Mooney and Meg Lanning made light work of the chase, running down the target in 12.5 overs after the early loss of Alyssa Healy.Brown’s spell set up the game after Lanning won the toss and sent Ireland in. Gaby Lewis holed out to deep backward square in the opening over off Megan Schutt before Brown produced a double-wicket maiden in her second over. Her extra pace was too much for Orla Prendergast and Laura Delany. Prendergast had struck two boundaries but had her off stump flattened by Brown attempting to drive on the up. Brown then pinned Delany on the body with a swift short ball before again firing full and straight. Delany tried to give room to slash through the off side but had her leg stump flattened.Related

Australia and South Africa to tour India for final men's T20 World Cup prep in September-October

India will play three T20Is against Australia, and a series of three T20Is and three ODIs against South Africa, all at home, between September 20 and October 11. These will be the last fixtures for all three teams before they travel to the men’s T20 World Cup in Australia, to be held from October 16.The three T20Is against Australia will be played in Mohali, Nagpur and Hyderabad on September 20, 23 and 25 respectively. The South Africa T20Is will be played between September 28 and October 4* in Thiruvananthapuram, Guwahati and Indore, while the ODIs, which follow, will be played in Lucknow, Ranchi and Delhi, between October 6 and 11.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

The three ODIs will be part of the World Cup Super League, and are crucial to South Africa’s chances of reaching the 2023 tournament, which India automatically qualify for as hosts. South Africa are in 11th place on the Super League table and have 11 matches left to play, but have forfeited their three against Australia in January next year in order for their top white-ball players to be available for their new T20 franchise league. That means they will only play eight more matches in the Super League – three against India, three against England in February 2023, and two against Netherlands in a series that had to be rescheduled from last November. While it is still too early for calculations, South Africa could see themselves in a World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe next year, unless they claim almost all of their remaining points. With the first-choice T20I players expected to leave for Australia around the time of the ODIs against South Africa, India – as well as South Africa – could well field a second-string team for those three matches. It isn’t new for India to field second-string teams. They have done so often of late, sometimes because of concurrent series in different parts of the world, and occasionally to give the regular players a break from what is increasingly becoming a jam-packed calendar, slotting in bilateral series and world events as well as T20 franchise leagues. In fact, it is in line with what Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, had said in June: “I have had discussions with NCA [National Cricket Academy] head VVS Laxman and we will always have 50 players in our roster. In future, you will have a scenario, where the Indian Test team will be playing a series in one country and the white-ball team will be engaged in a series in a different country. We are going in that direction where we will have two national teams ready at the same time.”The Indian white-ball team is currently in the Caribbean to play a series of three ODIs and five T20Is, between July 22 and August 7. They will then travel to Zimbabwe, where they are scheduled to play three ODIs between August 18 and August 22. The Asia Cup, which has been moved from Sri Lanka to the UAE because of the ongoing political tensions on the island – will take place between August 27 and September 11.

Aston Villa now willing to pay £17m release clause for La Liga "revelation"

Preparing to get their January business underway, Aston Villa are now reportedly prepared to pay the £17m release clause to sign one of their biggest transfer targets this month.

Aston Villa transfer news

The Villans have struggled to balance European and domestic responsibilities so far this season, falling outside of the Premier League’s top four as a result as they enter the second half of the campaign.

So it comes as little surprise that they’ve already threatened to steal the headlines more than once during the January transfer window, as Unai Emery looks to reinforce his squad to mount a comeback into the Champions League places.

What should undoubtedly aid their search for fresh faces is the pending sale of Jaden Philogene. Since returning to Villa Park in the summer, the winger has struggled to break into Emery’s strongest side and is now closing in on a mid-season switch to Ipswich Town, who are reportedly splashing out over £20m to secure his signature.

It looks as though those in the Midlands are already preparing to spend that money, too. According to reports in Spain, Aston Villa are now prepared to pay the €20m (£17m) release clause to sign Oscar Mingueza this month, with the deal already reportedly underway.

Concerning news for the Villans…

ByTom Cunningham Jan 10, 2025

The right-back currently looks destined for Villa Park and to hand Matty Cash alarming competition for his starting spot for the remainder of the season and beyond. Still just 25 years old, that £17m fee could quickly become one of the bargains of the window if Mingueza continues his Celta Vigo form in the Midlands.

"Revelation" Mingueza can replace Cash

Dubbed a “revelation” at Celta Vigo by journalist Zach Lowy, Mingueza’s potential arrival could signal the end of Cash’s starting role under Emery. The right-back’s attacking work is particularly something to look out for and a trait that should only add further excitement at Villa Park should he complete a mid-season move from Spain.

A player who began as a right-back more comparable to Cesar Azpilicueta at Barcelona, Mingueza is now a modern-day full-back who would undoubtedly aid Villa’s push to record back-to-back top-four finishes.

While his creativity is impressive, Mingueza’s ability to recover possession is also a trait which should benefit Aston Villa if they manage to get their deal over the line.

Emery has already seen just how much competition for places can push his players to greater heights, with Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran’s goalscoring battle a key part of the current campaign, and he could now see Cash and Mingueza endure a similar fight to start down the right-hand side for the remainder of the season.

Pant jumps to fifth, Bairstow to tenth place in latest Test rankings

Jonny Bairstow and Rishabh Pant, the standout batting stars of the Edgbaston Test, have burst into the top ten of the ICC men’s Test player rankings – Bairstow at tenth place and Pant at a career-best No. 5. The unbeaten century in the second innings didn’t hurt Joe Root’s cause either, as he consolidated his position at the top of the table, that too with 923 rating points, his best.Bairstow was the Player of the Match following innings of 106 and 114 not out in England’s seven-wicket win, which helped them square the five-match Test series 2-2. That made it four centuries in his last three Tests for him, and he moved up 11 places to No. 10. He has 1218 runs at an average of 55.36 with six centuries in the current World Test Championship cycle. With Bairstow moving up, Virat Kohli, who only managed scores of 11 and 20 at Edgbaston, fell four spots to No. 13. This is the first time since 2016 that Kohli has not featured in the top ten in Test cricket. As for Bairstow, it was a continuation of his stunning rise in recent weeks. Prior to the New Zealand Test series in June, he was ranked 47th. Now, he is back in the top ten for the first time since 2018.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Root, who collaborated with Bairstow in an unbroken 269-run stand that took England over the line against India and scored an unbeaten 142 himself – to go with 31 in the first innings – stretched his lead at the top of the table to 44 ratings points over second-placed Marnus Labuschagne. Root is now also among the top 20 highest-rated batters in Test history, at No. 19.Steven Smith and Babar Azam were at three and four respectively, with Pant at five. Pant was the main performer with the bat for India in the Test, hitting 146 in the first innings and 57 in the second. That took him up six places from No. 11.Two bowlers who gained in the latest rankings update were James Anderson and Nathan Lyon. Anderson picked up six wickets at Edgbaston, including 5 for 60 in the first innings, to move up one spot to sixth among Test bowlers. And Lyon, who picked up nine wickets in the first Test in Sri Lanka, has risen five spots to 13th.Full rankings tables

There was also a new top-tenner in the men’s T20I bowling rankings: Akeal Hosein. Hosein has returned 1 for 22 and 1 for 27 in the two T20Is at home against Bangladesh so far – the first ended in a no-result because of the weather and West Indies won the second by 35 runs. That has given him a jump of ten spots, and a joint-eighth position with Maheesh Theekshana.Papua New Guinea’s Norman Vanua’s impressive all-round showing in the T20I series in Singapore, meanwhile, has put him in the top ten among allrounders in the format. He hit 20 and picked up 2 for 30 in the first game, and scored 71 and returned 1 for 33 in the second, moving ten places to No. 9 as a result.

Jarrod Bowen has broken his foot and will be out for the foreseeable future, dealing a seismic blow to Lopetegui, who now ponders life without his club captain. The east Londoners take on Premier League champions Man City at the Etihad Stadium this afternoon, and it will be a difficult game to navigate minus the talismanic winger in their side.

Meanwhile, long-serving striker Michail Antonio has been discharged from hospital after suffering a horrific car crash in December last year, and the Jamaica international is expected to face a lengthy spell of rehabilitation before deciding whether he can play again.

“Unfortunately for us it is not going to be a few days,” said Lopetegui on Bowen’s injury.

“He was able to play 30 minutes with his injury, but now he has to rest and recover. Let’s see, but it is not good news for us. We are sure that Jarrod is going to try to make shorter the time that he recovers, because of his character. But it is true that he is going to be out in the next matches.

“Jarrod is one of our main players and our captain. But now we have to find solutions and it is the moment for other players to show that they are ready to help us.”

Newcastle defender Lloyd Kelly against Jarrod Bowen

When asked about the January window in his pre-Man City press conference, Lopetegui claimed that West Ham are “working” on potential new additions behind-the-scenes.

“It is true that we have these two important losses [Bowen and Antonio]. The club knows our needs and are working about [on] that,” said Lopetegui on West Ham signing players this month.

“We have to be focused in preparing for the next match against Manchester City, despite for sure the club is going to be working.”

There are reports that West Ham are targeting Real Sociedad forward Brais Mendez as an option, but it is believed they’re also thinking of reinforcing their back line.

West Ham make approach for Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney

According to The Boot Room and journalist Graeme Bailey, the Irons are keen admirers of Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney, who’s apparently decided to leave N5 in January.

Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney.

Tierney is widely reported to be in pre-contract talks with Celtic, as his contract expires at the end of this season, but TBR write that the Scotland international is eager to quit Arsenal as early as this month.

They also claim West Ham have made an approach for Tierney in the last week. However, the £120,000-per-week defender has snubbed their interest, and ultimately favours a move back to former club Celtic above all as he continues talks with the Scottish champions.

Tierney made his first senior appearance for Arsenal in over a year during a 69-minute Carabao Cup cameo against Crystal Palace in late December, featuring in each of their last seven Premier League matchday squads, but his long-term future is certain to be away from north London.

Speaking to Fjortoft, De Bruyne said: "There is always a challenge, you know. I don’t know what’s going to happen next season. If teams come and then convince me that they have a nice sport project. I love football – I love to play football and if a nice project comes and my family is also good with that, we will be able to make a decision."

When pressed on whether his career in England was over, De Bruyne replied: "I don’t know. Honestly I don’t know. The decision to leave has not been long.
