Ajinkya Rahane century headlines dominant day for India

His unbeaten 104-run sixth-wicket stand with Ravindra Jadeja gives India the advantage after two days

Andrew McGlashan26-Dec-2020A century of the highest calibre by Ajinkya Rahane put India in control of the second Test after it appeared Australia would bowl themselves back into contention. Instead, with the help of a string of middle-order allies, chiefly the recalled Ravindra Jadeja in an unbroken stand of 104, Rahane lifted his team to an advantage of 82.Australia started the day well – Pat Cummins producing a magnificent eight-over spell that removed both overnight batsmen, Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara, and included barely a delivery off line – but tailed off during the final session which included shipping 45 runs in 11.3 overs of the second new ball. Rain brought a slightly early finish, what ended up being the final delivery of the day bringing Rahane his third life when he fended a short ball to point against an increasingly frustrated Mitchell Starc but the chance burst out of Travis Head’s hands as he hit the turf.Ajinkya Rahane takes a moment after a hard-fought century•Getty Images

They had two other opportunities to remove Rahane – one a miss and the other a drop. On 57, he edged Starc between Tim Paine and the lone slip Steven Smith moments after the off-side field had been strengthened at the expense of the cordon. Then, on 73, in the first over with the second new ball a chance went to hand, Rahane jabbing at a full, wide delivery from Starc, but Smith was late to react above his head at second slip. By the end of the day, Australia were ragged and in need of regrouping.Rahane needed treatment for what appeared a back problem twice during the afternoon session (and later for blows on the hand and neck) but it did not disrupt his almost zen-like progression at the crease. His 12th Test century, and second at the MCG, came up from 195 balls with a fierce square cut against Cummins, a hallmark of an innings where his strokeplay flourished when he wanted it to. Rarely did he miss the chance to score amid over after over of keeping out the good balls, the softness of his hands ensuring when the edge was found it usually went to ground. His most prolific scoring area with 20 runs was third man.India managed just 54 runs in the first session and Australia will have come away feeling they could have had more than two wickets. Cummins was magnificent – he beat Pujara with the first delivery of the day, close to enough for Paine to burn a review – and Josh Hazlewood could have had Gill in the second over when Paine was unable to hold an inside edge diving to his left.Cummins eventually lured Gill into an expansive drive to end a promising maiden Test innings and in his next over claimed the huge prize of Pujara, although this one owed everything to Australia’s captain as he flung himself in front of first slip to hold a low chance that would not have carried. That was, however, to prove the exception in the fielding effort. At the time, Australia’s 195 was looking considerable and Cummins was rested with a spell that read 8-4-12-2.India, with Rahane absorbing a lot of pressure, did very well to take the sting out of the session, whittling the deficit down well inside three figures before Nathan Lyon, who found considerable turn on occasions to suggest a fourth-innings run chase will be a demanding prospect, removed Hanuma Vihari with a gloved sweep.Up to this point, Australia had controlled the run rate so despite a small first-innings total they always had a little bit of breathing space. That changed with the arrival of Rishabh Pant who brought impetus and quickly skipped to 24 at a run-a-ball with some measured, selective strokeplay. It appeared to help free up Rahane, too, although that was also the reward for his hours of earlier hard work.Pant was cut off by Starc, bringing up his 250th Test wicket, when he edged a cut with India still behind and Australia hopeful of something close to parity, but that door was slammed shut. Jadeja, effectively brought in as Virat Kohli’s replacement, played a central role with an innings of maturity and patience. By the close, when he had faced 104 deliveries, he had struck just one boundary – a neat back-foot punch off Cameron Green. He showed a defence to match Rahane’s and resisted trying to take on Lyon.As the wind suddenly swirled around the MCG, Starc got a delivery to climb at Rahane but it was the India captain’s day. He was getting treatment from the physio when, in what was perfect timing for India, the rain arrived and the umpires called play off. Few deserved the comfort of the dressing room more than Rahane. A chance to take stock and resume tomorrow. However, he may already have defined this game.

Better than Adeyemi: Chelsea register strong interest in £25m superstar

Despite star man Cole Palmer bagging 22 Premier League goals last season, Chelsea still desperately need more options in the final third if they are to mount a push for a top-four place under Enzo Maresca in 2024/25.

The Italian has the opportunity to stamp his mark on the Blues first-team this summer, potentially reducing the game time of numerous players who currently ply their trade at Stamford Bridge.

Raheem Sterling, Mykhailo Mudryk and Noni Madueke only managed a combined 18 goals between them, with the club needing to bolster the attacking ranks to provide more of a cutting edge to a side that missed the joint-second most big chances in the division.

Many names have been linked with a move to the London club, with the likes of Alexander Isak, Victor Osimhen and Michael Olise all touted with a move, but the latter decided in favour of a switch to join German side Bayern Munich.

However, multiple new names have been thrown into the mix over a potential switch to the Premier League, with both players undoubtedly improving Maresca’s attacking unit.

Chelsea’s attempts to sign a new forward

According to TEAMtalk, Chelsea are in talks to sign Borussia Dortmund forward Karim Adeyemi this summer.

The 22-year-old scored three times in his 21 Bundesliga appearances last season, showcasing his ability to get in behind the full-back, as demonstrated against Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

The report states the German could be available for as little as £25m this summer, with Chelsea already in talks over a move for his services.

However, the club have also registered interest in Porto attacker Francisco Conceição, with the Portuguese having a €30m (£25m) release clause in his current contract as per Report via Sport Witness.

That said, it's a release clause that will increase in price on Monday to €45m (£38m), meaning suitors could sign him 'this week'.

The youngster has had an excellent campaign, registering nine goal contributions in 27 Liga Portugal outings, whilst scoring the winner for his nation against Czech Republic at Euro 2024.

Whilst they’re both available at the same price, Conceição is undoubtedly a better player and one that would be a better fit for Maresca at Stamford Bridge.

Why Conceição would be a better option than Adeyemi

Whilst both players have undeniable quality and talents that would further improve Chelsea’s frontline, the Porto youngster has the ability to have the greater impact on the squad should a deal for his services be completed this summer.

The 21-year-old may be showcasing his quality in a lower-quality division, but his stats reflect his star qualities, potentially being the next Portuguese star to make his mark on the Premier League.

The “exceptional” Conceição, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, managed to complete more than double the number of progressive carries compared to Adeyemi, whilst also averaging over one more shot per 90.

With the Portuguese talent standing at just 5 foot 6, he has the low centre of gravity to be able to glide past players, as demonstrated in his tally of successful take-ons with the youngster completing 67 attempts – nearly four times better than the German could muster over the course of last season.

His success rate in his attempted take-ons is also significantly greater than the Borussia Dortmund talent, proving why he would be a better option for the Blues to pursue this summer.

His ability to create opportunities and beat his man is evident, with Chelsea once again needing to dip into the market to try and close the gap to sides such as Arsenal and Manchester City.

However, should they decide to back Maresca in the market once more, it’s pivotal they opt for the right addition, with Conceição undoubtedly the more effective option for Chelsea this summer.

Tom Curran adds to England withdrawals from BBL, Johan Botha comes out of retirement

England allrounder Tom Curran has withdrawn from the BBL citing the need to spend some time at home after nearly five months in biosecure bubbles. The news comes just days after England team-mate Tom Banton also withdrew from the tournament for similar reasons. The pair have been in biosecure bubbles since cricket resumed in July. Both players were part of England’s white-ball squads before heading to the IPL and both have been in South Africa where Covid outbreaks have wreaked havoc with the tour.Depending on the outcome of the tests in the England camp that are currently being ratified there could be further impact on players coming to the BBL. Those in the tournament were due to fly directly from South Africa after the ODIs, but if there are positive tests within the group they may not be able to leave the country straightaway”I’m really sorry not to be playing in this year’s Big Bash,” Curran said. “As you’ll already know, it’s been a very challenging year and I’ve been in bubbles since July.”I feel very lucky to play for the Sixers, I have loved my time with you all over the last two seasons and I can promise you, this decision was not taken lightly.”I will hopefully be back for many years to come, recharged and ready to go again, but for now I just need some time, normality, see family and be home.”Sixers general ganager Jodie Hawkins said: “The varying conditions we are asking our players to play cricket in worldwide is taking its toll and we understand Tom’s need for a break over this BBL season. While the hub conditions here are much less restrictive than other tournaments, the constant requirement to lock down has been tough and our number one priority is the welfare of our players.”Covid-19 and Australia’s strict quarantine requirements are causing issues for the BBL after the league changed the rules this season to allow three overseas instead of two.Clubs have gone on a signing spree and the BBL was shaping to feature some high-quality internationals given international cricket was in a state of flux.Johan Botha comes out of the retirement to return to the Hobart Hurricanes•Getty Images

Sam Billings, Jason Roy, Liam Livingstone, and Lewis Gregory are due to come from South Africa and need to complete 14 days of strict quarantine prior to being available to play. Dawid Malan arrived over the weekend and is currently quarantining in Perth.Afghanistan spinner Mujeeb-Ur-Rahman tested positive for Covid-19 while in quarantine in Australia and had to be hospitalised, meaning he will likely miss the early part of the tournament.Mohammad Nabi and Noor Ahmad had the start of their 14-day quarantine delayed after they were not allowed to fly to Adelaide as originally planned due to a Covid outbreak in the city. As a result, the pair will miss the Melbourne Renegades’ first two games and the Renegades have signed Gloucestershire allrounder Benny Howell as a replacement, as he is currently in Victoria with his family. The Renegades are sweating on the availability of Imran Tahir in January as he is not set to arrive in Australia until after Christmas. The Hurricanes are confident Sandeep Lamichhane will be available to fly to Australia to play in January despite testing positive for Covid in Nepal. The Hurricanes have convinced Johan Botha to come out of retirement at age 36 to play as a replacement, after retiring from the BBL to take up coaching.”I figured I’m as fit as I’ve ever been, and I feel I can still make a contribution to the team,” Botha said. “I’ve missed playing but I didn’t really want to put it out there and say ‘can you pick me’ in case it didn’t work out, so we kept it quiet from when we first chatted about it at the Shield hub in Adelaide, and it slowly built up from there.””The little Covid cluster in Adelaide for instance didn’t help, so we just kept it quiet all along to make sure everything lined up.”

He’s better than Roberts: Leeds set to launch move for "quality" ace

Leeds United are slowly but surely adding in a couple of new faces here and there to their ranks this transfer window, with Joe Rothwell joining Daniel Farke's camp as the most recent capture.

That followed on from the low-key signing of Alex Cairns joining from Salford City to help bolster the Whites in the goalkeeper positions, as supporters of the West Yorkshire side now look forward to the first high-profile purchase arriving at Elland Road.

This could come in the form of a new right-back joining Farke's group shortly, with no planned deal in place for Connor Roberts to return.

Leeds looking at £7m rated signing

According to football journalist Mike McGrath, Leeds are 'set to move' for Sheffield United right-back Jayden Bogle this transfer window, to finally sort out issues that have been plaguing the Championship side for some time down that flank.

Archie Gray filled in here on numerous occasions last campaign, but with the 18-year-old sensation now on the books at Tottenham Hotspur, it's no surprise to see Farke and Co deliberating now on what they want in this position ahead of the season to come.

It won't be straightforward for Leeds to land their desired target in Bogle, however, with football journalist Alan Nixon reporting that the recently relegated Blades want the Whites to cough up £7m to consider parting ways.

As it stands, the West Yorkshire outfit are allegedly way off spending that much to secure the services of the right-back.

Jaden Bogle for Sheffield United.

The second-tier promotion hopefuls could still go all out to win Bogle, despite this recent stumbling block over a price, with football journalist Graham Smyth also adding fuel to the fire surrounding Leeds' drawn-out hunt for a new body at right-back, when he revealed that an imminent move for Roberts wasn't on the cards.

The in-demand 23-year-old could even be viewed as an upgrade on his Burnley counterpart when you consider their 23/24 seasons against each other.

What Bogle can offer Leeds

As can be seen in the strike Bogle managed to bag against Manchester City last August, the ex-Derby County defender is unafraid to get forward and help out in attacks, which will suit the attacking mentality Farke likes his sides to play with.

The Blades number 20 has 12 goals next to his name from 103 games playing in South Yorkshire, with an impressive 115 games accumulated in the Championship alone on his career CV, where he's tallied up 16 assists too.

On the contrary, Roberts – when looking at last campaign in isolation – really struggled to nail down a starting spot in the Leeds ranks away from any past second-tier heroics, with just an average of 27 minutes per game handed to him by Farke, which is reflected in his poor numbers in the table above.

Bogle can at least hold his head somewhat high with his numbers from what was a car crash season for all those involved with Chris Wilder's men, with his 4.8 total duels won on average per game actually bettering the likes of Sam Byram who routinely stepped up last season at right-back too for Leeds, but has just 4.4 duels as his lesser average.

Connor Roberts

Roberts will just aim to bounce back with Burnley, who are now in the same division as Leeds, with new manager Scott Parker perhaps taking a shining to the Welshman.

Whereas, Farke and Co will have to weigh up whether an ambitious £7m swoop for Bogle is truly worth it, knowing the expensive 23-year-old – who was once labelled as a "quality" player by Blades boss Wilder – could fix many a selection dilemma moving forward.

Negotiations being readied for £40m Chelsea starlet with "big potential"

Whilst Chelsea have become synonymous with opening their chequebooks and spending big in the transfer market, it now appears that one player could be leaving the club this summer.

Chelsea agree deals for multiple young stars

Despite the Todd Boehly era having yet to yield any real success for Chelsea, one area they have excelled in is finding and recruiting a slew of very talented young players.

Report: Chelsea battling Premier League rivals to sign 27 y/o this summer

He’s been hailed as the “best defender” in his league.

ByHenry Jackson Jul 7, 2024

This summer has seen the theme continue with a number of highly-rated teenagers making the move to the Premier League club. One signing that looks close to completion is a deal for Boca Juniors sensation Aaron Anselmino. The 19-year-old is set to have a medical in London soon after completing a roughyl £20 million move from Boca.

19-year-old Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel is another young player in the Blues' sights with the club eager to prise the young talent away from Germany this summer.

Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel

Whilst the strategy of Boehly and Co clearly centres around signing young players, it seems that one high potential player could be leaving Stamford Bridge this summer.

Chukwuemeka wanted by European giants

As first reported by Caught Offside, AC Milan are ready to start transfer negotiations over the signing of Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka. The outlet claims that the midfielder, who has a £40m release clause, is primarily a loan target, however the Serie A runners-up would be willing to insert a clause to buy the 20-year-old into any agreement.

This development follows news from last month that Milan were interested in agreeing a loan-to-buy deal for the midfielder, however they had yet to ready serious talks until now.

Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka.

Caught Offside now reports that Milan are ready to open negotations and are willing to pay around £20 million for the 20-year-old, a far cry from the exit clause inserted into his current deal at Stamford Bridge. It is understood that Chukwuemeka currently favours staying at Chelsea despite his playing time being limited in recent seasons.

Chukwuemeka arrived in West London in a £20 million move from Aston Villa back in 2022. The 20-year-old has managed just 27 appearances for the Blues across his two seasons with the club as he has struggled for gametime in Chelsea's midfield.

Despite his recent issues, Chukwuemeka arrived at Stamford Bridge with high expectations. Upon leaving Villa Park, former Villans' boss Steven Gerrard spoke highly of the then teenager, telling the press: "I really enjoyed working with Carney, he’s obviously a big talent, someone who’s got big potential,

"I think the Academy boys and when we came in, we worked ever so hard to work on his development and shape him, try and polish him up, so Chelsea are getting a big talent."

Whilst it is uncertain what the future holds for Chukwuemeka, it is clear that if his ambition is for more game time he will likely have to leave Chelsea this summer.

South Africa seal victory and 2-0 series win despite Dimuth Karunaratne's battling hundred

Sri Lanka lose last six wickets for 35 runs before openers wrap up comfortable win

Andrew Fidel Fernando05-Jan-2021Any momentum Sri Lanka had gained on day two, they squandered within the first 90 minutes of day three, losing their last six wickets for 35 runs as South Africa’s quicks hunted relentlessly. Very briefly, there was the joy of Dimuth Karunaratne getting to his first hundred in South Africa, but this soon gave away to despair.Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi and Lutho Sipamla each produced menacing spells to ensure Sri Lanka would make no more than 62 in the morning session, leaving South Africa with just 67 to get. They hurtled to the target in 13 overs either side of lunch, with all ten wickets intact, sealing an emphatic 2-0 series victory.Related

Moonda: SA's collapse exposes familiar faultlines

Having begun in credit after their efforts the previous afternoon, there was mild hope that Sri Lanka would set a tricky target, particularly with Karunaratne appearing assured in the early overs. He started on 91, and struck consecutive fours in the third over of the day to raise his first century outside Sri Lanka since 2017, and his tenth overall. But he had been occasionally troubled by the bounce Nortje was generating, at a rapid pace, and it was this extra bounce that brought his downfall on 103. Nortje pitched one just back of a length, and angled it into Karunaratne from around the wicket. The batsman attempted to swat it to the leg side, and the ball sailed off the top edge into the hands of square leg.Overnight partner Nirsoshan Dickwella had been far less secure during his innings and was himself out the next over, a ball from Ngidi ballooning off his leading edge to cover as he attempted to work it to leg. He was out for 36, and the remaining wickets didn’t take long to follow. Dasun Shanaka spooned Wiaan Mulder to mid-on. Wanindu Hasaranga played a startlingly awful heave against Sipamla and was bowled. Then in his next over, Sipamla claimed the two remaining wickets in the space of three balls.Dimuth Karunaratne brought up his tenth Test century on the third morning•AFP via Getty ImagesNgidi finished with 4 for 44, having also been excellent in the third session on day two. Sipamla picked up three, continuing a habit of wiping out the lower order in this series. It was Nortje’s key wicket of Karunaratne, though, that swung the game definitively in South Africa’s favour.Dean Elgar and Aiden Markram then set South Africa confidently on track to their target in the five overs before lunch. Markram, who had the majority of the strike, did have one scare, when he edged Vishwa Fernando low towards the slip cordon. Kusal Mendis dived across to make what initially seemed like a good catch, only for replays to show that he may have grounded the ball briefly. The third umpire ultimately ruled it not out. After the break, the pair cruised happily to the target. Elgar’s batting was especially sprightly, as he made 31 not out off 27. Markram finished unbeaten on 36 off 53.Sri Lanka may take very mild encouragement from the fact that they made South Africa bat twice for the first time in three matches at the Wanderers, and that their second-innings 211 was their highest total at this venue. The overall vibe from the tour, however, will be one of frustration that so many of their best players were injured, and disappointment that they could not scrap as hard as they had on their previous Test tour to the country.

West Ham negotiating incredible deal for £20m Declan Rice replacement

The Copa America, 2024 European Championship and so forth have dominated football's narrative over the past five weeks, but clubs such as West Ham United have very much been busy on the transfer front.

It's fair to say that while parting with David Moyes was probably the right call, trepidation lined the air in east London as United stepped into the murky unknown.

West Ham head coach Julen Lopetegui

But head coach Julen Lopetegui and technical director Tim Steidten are working feverishly to improve the first-team squad, and while a range of rumours – such as negotiations for centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo and Manchester United's Aaron Wan-Bissaka – point toward some exciting additions, the latest player to be closing in on the London Stadium might just be the most exciting yet.

West Ham transfer news

According to The Guardian, West Ham are locked in talks with Al-Ittihad concerning the transfer of N'Golo Kante, who has been in Saudi Arabia for one year after leaving Chelsea.

Lopetegui is a long-term admirer of the 33-year-old, who is one of the most decorated and adulated midfielders of his generation, and the Irons attempted to sign him in 2015 before he left Caen for Leicester City.

Why West Ham should sign N'Golo Kante

The France international was one of his nation's standout performers at Euro 2024, with the wheels and wherewithal to dominate from the middle of the park, showcasing his trademark mobility and tenacity in regaining possession and progressing play.

Where to start? Kante is an iconic Premier League figure, instrumental in extraordinarily winning the Premier League with the Foxes in 2015/16 before moving to Chelsea and clinching the top-flight title and the Champions League – and a host of further honours besides.

Widely heralded as the signing of the summer as Leicester scored one of the greatest-ever sporting achievements, Kante has prospered wherever he has played, and he could even prove to be West Ham's best midfielder since Declan Rice, who was sold to Arsenal for £105m last summer after an illustrious east London career.

As you can see, while Rice upheld stronger defensive metrics in Germany over the past five weeks, Kante was far more creative while still maintaining an impressive 90% pass success rate. Moreover, the Frenchman still recorded noteworthy numbers vis-a-vis tackling and intercepting, recovery rate and progression frequency.

Once praised for his "magic" on the pitch by former Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas, Kante would not be a signing to dominate from the engine room for the next decade, but he could provide Lopetegui's side with a few years of exemplary service, bringing verve and steel to restore West Ham to European, perhaps even trophy-winning heights.

Report: Rangers have slapped "astronomical" price tag on "top personality"

Rangers have reportedly put an "astronomical" price tag on the shoulder of a "top personality" at Ibrox as they look to retain his services this summer.

Rangers transfer news

Philippe Clement's side have made impressive progress in the summer transfer window to date, making a number of new signings, but more new faces are expected to come in.

Plymouth Argyle attacker Morgan Whittaker has been linked with a move to Rangers, having come fresh off the back of an excellent season that saw him score 19 goals and register eight assists in the English Championship.

The 23-year-old certainly impressed Plymouth's director of football, Neil Dewsnip, who hailed the striker as he was included in the second tier's team of the season: "He has excited us here throughout the season. He has scored some amazing goals and to get selected in that team with the quality that exists in this league is a major achievement. He should be really proud of himself."

Tyrese Campbell is another player who has been backed to join the Gers of late. He is now available on a free transfer after leaving Stoke City at the end of last season and the Scottish Premiership giants are reportedly set to reignite their interest in him.

In what could be an audacious piece of business, Rangers have also emerged as potential suitors for Kalvin Phillips, who is looking to rebuild his career after struggling at Manchester City before failing to set the world alight during a loan spell at West Ham last season. Rivals Celtic are also believed to be keen, though.

Now, an update has emerged regarding the future of a current Gers hero, as they look to avoid losing too many key figures this summer.

Rangers put "astronomical" price tag on player's shoulders

According to a new report from Football Insider, Rangers will demand an "astronomical" price tag for Jack Butland this summer, as they look to keep hold of one of their most important players. They value the Englishman at £30m, which they hope will put off any clubs from making a bid for him.

This is encouraging to hear from a Rangers perspective, considering what an impressive performer Butland has been ever since he arrived from Crystal Palace last year. Clement is clearly a huge admirer of the 31-year-old, admitting he is one of the best goalkeepers he has ever worked alongside in his managerial career:

"Over more than 30 years, Jack together with Simon [Mignolet] are the two best I have met. He is a really, really top-class goalkeeper for me. He almost didn't have a downfall [make a mistake] in all of our four months together. He is a top goalkeeper, but also a top personality, because you can be a really good goalkeeper but not be a leader in the dressing room – but Simon and Jack both are."
