Gareth Southgate blamed for Phil Foden's poor Euro 2024 as Micah Richards reveals England's key 'tactical issue'

Former Manchester City and England star Micah Richards believes Phil Foden's disappointing performances at Euro 2024 are down to a tactical issue.

Foden has faced criticism by fans and pundits for his displays for the Three Lions in Germany this summer, with many calling for him to be left out of the starting XI for the semi-final against Netherlands.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Former full-back Richards, however, feels that manager Gareth Southgate's playing style prevents Foden from having the freedom and space to attack the way he wants to, and he does not expect their strategy to change drastically for the upcoming semi-final.

WHAT RICHARDS SAID

Referencing Cesc Fabregas' suspicion that he was not being objective about Foden's performances, Richards wrote in a column: "I wasn’t being biased at all, though. I just thought the England team that night was not set up for him to flourish and, four games on, I still feel the same way.

"Like Harry Kane, there seems to be a lot of criticism of Foden on social media at the moment, with people calling for them both to be dropped for England’s semi-final against the Netherlands.

"I know they can both play much better than they have done so far in Germany, but I would say the reason they have not been at their best is a tactical issue rather being down to the players themselves.

"As for dropping them? Absolutely no chance. Fden is still the England player who can open up a defence with a pass, or score a goal, if you give him the right role."

On Wednesday, Southgate's Three Lions will take on Ronald Koeman's Netherlands to battle it out for a place in the Euro 2024 final. The winners will meet either France or Spain, who play the other semi-final on Tuesday, in the tournament decider.

Boost for Ange: Striker who Tottenham want to sign is now learning English

A Tottenham Hotspur target has given those in north London a transfer boost by taking up English lessons ahead of a potential summer move.

Spurs transfer rumours

It was a busy start to 2024, with three new players signing in the January transfer window. Timo Werner joined on loan with an option to buy in the summer from RB Leipzig and centre-back Radu Dragusin signed on a permanent transfer from Genoa.

The club also managed to beat Barcelona to the services of teenager Lucas Bergvall from Swedish side Djurgarden, with the midfielder set to join Ange Postecoglou’s side in the summer.

Between now and the end of May, Postecoglou’s focus will be on looking to secure a top-four finish in the Premier League, something which could help when it comes to making Spurs a far more attractive proposition ahead of the 2024/25 season.

They currently sit behind Aston Villa and just in front of Manchester United as the battle for Champions League football intensifies. A number of players look set to be targeted over the summer, including Conor Gallagher, Raphinha and Pedro Neto, but another young addition could also be on the cards with Besiktas teenager Semih Kilicsoy.

Now, a new promising update has emerged.

Semih Kilicsoy transfer update

Sport Witness relayed a new development about Kilicsoy’s future, with reports stating that Tottenham and Borussia Dortmund are in the race for the 18-year-old’s services.

Kilicsoy is thought to be ready to leave Turkey and is expected to depart this summer, with Besiktas valuing him at €50m. The player has even been taking English lessons from a private teacher, which suggests he favours a move to the Premier League in a boost for Spurs and Postecoglou.

The centre-forward, who can also play out wide if needed, appears to be a potential star in the making, so Spurs could be targeting a similar deal to the one they secured for Bergvall, albeit more expensive with Besiktas’ asking price.

Kilicsoy has come through the academy with his current employers and has caught the eye of analyst Ben Mattinson, who labelled the forward as “powerful” at the start of the year.

Besiktas chief Feyyaz Ucar isn't confident of keeping Kilicsoy in the long run, saying:

“I want to say that he will play for Beşiktaş for many years, but I don’t think we can keep him. He is one of the most talented Turkish players in recent years. Vincenzo Montella will also invite him to the national squad."

He’s scored seven Super Lig goals in 12 games this season, and by the looks of things, he could be one heading to England and possibly Spurs in the summer.

O grande impasse do Internacional é o atacante Paolo Guerrero.

Liverpool star now a doubt vs Man City after re-injuring earlier problem

Whilst Liverpool have recently gone against all odds to stay on course to potentially win a historic quadruple, Jurgen Klopp's latest injury update may prove to be one injury blow too many ahead of two crucial games.

Liverpool injuries continue to pile up

The Reds ended their Carabao Cup win over Chelsea with as many as six academy graduates on the pitch, with three of those being players who were yet to really be handed a taste of first-team action. Yet, somehow, Virgil van Dijk's 118th-minute header left Liverpool lifting yet another trophy under Klopp against all odds.

Liverpool win the Carabao Cup.

What's more, the academy graduates were then on show once more, as they helped their side to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Southampton to progress into the last eight of the FA Cup. Having played his part at Wembley, Jayden Danns came from the bench to score his first two senior goals for the club.

That said, with a return to Premier League action coming up against Nottingham Forest, Liverpool's schedule and injury list could finally catch up to them, particularly after Klopp's latest Mohamed Salah update.

The Reds boss confirmed that Salah will miss the game against Forest and it is possible that he will make a return next week. But with a crucial title clash against Manchester City coming up, the Egyptian remains a doubt for that too, although a return is "possible".

What will leave those at Anfield most frustrated is the fact that Salah reportedly re-injured the same hamstring that ended his AFCON tournament with Egypt early. Having suffered a reoccurrence of the injury on his return against Brentford, questions must be asked over whether he was ready to make his comeback.

Szoboszlai and Nunez could return vs Forest

Klopp did at least provide some positive injury news when it comes to Dominik Szoboszlai and Darwin Nunez, despite Liverpool's Salah blow. The German revealed that the duo have been in training and are in contention to face Forest.

With Andy Robertson and Wataru Endo missing Thursday's training session, Liverpool's injury list isn't going away anytime soon, as they look to navigate their way through an increasingly congested fixture list.

Top of the Premier League by just a point with their clash against closest rivals City coming up on March 10, Liverpool have been hit with injuries at the worst possible time. They will now be desperately hoping to at least see Salah make his return before squaring off against Pep Guardiola's side. The Reds overcame the odds against Chelsea, but Manchester City may not be as accommodating.

Farke drops Glen Kamara in predicted Leeds lineup vs Stoke

Leeds United are searching for their first win in three matches as they welcome Stoke City to Elland Road later tonight in the Championship.

The Whites head into this game off the back of a 1-1 draw with Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town away from home last time out in the second tier.

It was a result that allowed Ipswich Town to move ahead of them, and into the automatic promotion places, on Saturday as they won their clash with Plymouth Argyle.

Daniel Farke's side had also lost their game before the draw with the Terriers in a 3-2 defeat to Chelsea in the FA Cup fifth round, which means that their last win was against Leicester City last month.

The German head coach could now look to make some alterations to his starting XI from last weekend's draw. With that in mind, here is FFC's predicted Leeds line-up to take on the Potters…

1 Illan Meslier

Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

Illan Meslier should continue between the sticks. The French shot-stopper has been Farke's first-choice – with 33 league starts – and there is nothing to suggest that he will switch things up in goal at this point in the season.

2 Connor Roberts

Burnley right-back Connor Roberts.

The first change to the starting XI could come in the right-back position as Connor Roberts could be rewarded for his impressive cameo against Huddersfield.

Signed on loan from Burnley on deadline day, the Wales international came off the bench to assist Patrick Bamford's equaliser with a crisp cross along the floor for the striker to convert.

Roberts has contributed with one goal and one assist in five appearances as a substitute in the Championship for the Whites so far, and could now come in for his full league debut for the club.

3 Joe Rodon

Leeds United's loan defender Joe Rodon.

At the heart of the defence, Joe Rodon should start once again for the Whites. The on-loan Tottenham Hotspur defender has been a reliable performer at the back throughout the campaign so far.

He has won 66% of his duels across 33 appearances in the Championship, and his defending has helped the side to keep 13 clean sheets in total.

4 Ethan Ampadu

Leeds midfielder Ethan Ampadu.

Playing out of his natural position in central midfield, Ethan Ampadu could start next to his fellow Wales international to complete the centre-back pairing.

With Pascal Struijk's continued absence through injury, the former Chelsea prospect could be picked ahead of the experienced Liam Cooper.

5 Sam Byram

Leeds defender Sam Byram.

The second change to the XI could be an enforced one. Farke revealed in his pre-match press conference that Junior Firpo is a doubt to face Stoke due to a calf issue.

An injury to the former Barcelona defender could open the door for Sam Byram, who was on the bench against Huddersfield, to make a return to the line-up.

Signed from Norwich City on a free transfer last summer, the English full-back has won 51% of his duels and made 2.7 tackles and interceptions per game across 25 appearances in the league this season.

6 Archie Gray

Archie Gray

Archie Gray could remain in the XI but move into the middle of the park to accommodate Roberts' involvement at right-back, which could see Glen Kamara dropped to the bench.

The Finland international only won two duels and created one chance for his teammates in an uneventful display against the Terriers, and Gray could be provided with a chance to shine in his natural position.

He was deployed in midfield against Chelsea in the FA Cup recently and his performance, with six duels won, four dribbles completed, and one chance created, earned him the official Player of the Match award.

The academy graduate could, therefore, be more combative in that role and offer more drive, with his dribbling ability, than Kamara, which is why the former Rangers star could be dropped for this game.

7 Ilia Gruev

Leeds midfielder Ilia Gruev.

Ilia Gruev could start next to the 17-year-old whiz for his 12th start of the Championship season, since his permanent move from Werder Bremen last summer.

Ampadu's continued deployment at centre-back has opened the door for the Bulgaria international to establish himself as a regular starter in midfield.

8 Dan James

Dan James

The third change to the starting XI could come on the right side of the attack as Wales international Dan James could finally be unleashed over Wilfried Gnonto.

His last league start for Leeds came against Norwich City in January as a hip injury provided the Italian whiz with a chance to take his place in the side.

As you can see in the table above, the former Manchester United whiz, who ex-boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer claimed has the "X-factor", has the quality to make an impact as a scorer and a creator of goals.

Gnonto has blanked in his last three matches, with zero goals or assists, after a run of five goals and one assist in five games, and Farke could rotate him out to bring James back in for this clash with Stoke.

9 Georginio Rutter

Leeds forward Georginio Rutter.

In the number ten position, Georginio Rutter could keep his place in the starting XI with the hope that he will have the key to unlocking the Stoke defence.

The French wizard has created 20 'big chances' and registered 11 assists for his teammates in 34 appearances in the Championship so far this season.

10 Crysencio Summerville

Crysencio Summerville.

On the left of the attack, Crysencio Summerville could look to end a run of four matches without a goal or an assist to his name in all competitions.

He has racked up 15 goals and eight assists in 30 league starts so far for Leeds and his manager could back him to get back to his best tonight, especially with Jaidon Anthony ruled out of contention to play due to personal reasons.

Spurs star showed he’s undroppable with "incredible" display v Palace

Tottenham Hotspur’s charge towards Champions League football continued with a victory on Saturday, as they beat Crystal Palace 3-1.

It was a vital win for Ange Postecoglou’s side, especially after losing 2-1 at home last weekend to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Ange Postecoglou

Around the hour mark, it seemed as though it would be consecutive home defeats as Eberechi Eze gave the visitors the lead, but Spurs showed character and belief to pick up the three points.

Nonetheless, there was one individual who was simply outstanding and once again proved to be undroppable.

Cristian Romero’s 23/24 season in numbers

Cristian Romero has been an absolute rock at the heart of Spurs’ backline, especially under the Australian boss this season and alongside Micky van de Ven.

The "incredible" Argentine, as lauded by journalist Alasdair Gold this season, has started 21 matches in the Premier League this campaign, showing his vast skill set and ability to affect the game in both penalty boxes.

Over the campaign, Romero has scored four goals and kept five clean sheets while displaying his dominance both on and off the ball, as you can see by some of his key statistics from this season below.

Spurs were excellent from the first whistle to the last, despite going behind. Their dominance can be highlighted by their 78% possession, as well as the fact that Palace only had four shots all game and an xG of 0.32.

Cristian Romero for Tottenham

In truth, Romero didn’t have much defending to do other than deal with set pieces and long balls into the striker, hence his zero tackles, clearances, and blocks.

However, the 25-year-old showcased his ability to control the game and progress the ball, which was ultimately vital to Spurs overturning their deficit.

Romero proved his importance to the side in the build-up, having the technical security and bravery to fire the ball into the final third 15 times while also taking a mammoth 132 touches and making 117 passes.

The fact that his pass accuracy was as high as 93% despite having such a high number is immense, but it was his threat in the final third that cements him as a rather complete defender.

After Timo Werner equalised in the 77th minute, the World Cup winner also scored the vital goal to put Tottenham one goal up, showing striker-esque movement to guide a header home from a looping James Maddison cross.

Overall, it was the perfect centre-half performance by Romero, even without the goal, and it further cemented him as one of the most important players for Postecoglou and Spurs.

Relentless Kyle Abbott claims nine wickets to dent Somerset's hopes of winning maiden title

Abbott runs through Somerset with 9 for 40 before James Vince’s unbeaten century builds lead for Hants

Hampshire 196 (Dawson 103, Gregory 3-63) and 176 for 8 (Vince 102*) lead Somerset 142 (Abbott 9-40) by 230 runsA relentless Kyle Abbott ran through Somerset’s batting line-up to finish with the best figures in the County Championship since in three years and dent their hopes of winning a maiden title.Abbott’s overnight figures had been impressive – he had two wickets for one run in six overs – and he added a further seven on a bright, sunny day, moving the ball prodigiously off the seam while hammering away at a good length.Despite some resistance in the form of a dogged 67-run stand for the ninth wicket between Dom Bess and Roelof van der Merwe, Somerset folded for 142, leaving them 54 runs in arrears. They struck early with the new ball, leaving Hampshire in trouble at 45 for 6, before James Vince’s sublime, unbeaten 102 wrestled control back, while events at Chelmsford confirmed that next week’s game at Taunton will be a title decider regardless of what happens in this round of games. The reasons players sign Kolpak deals are myriad and complex, and Abbott has no regrets about his decision to do so back in 2017, but it was impossible to watch this display without a tinge of sadness that he has played his last game of international cricket. Many of his best balls did not take wickets, and instead jagged away late off the seam past the outside edge; but the balls to remove Tom Abell (bowled shouldering arms), James Hildreth (feathering behind) and George Bartlett (trapped lbw in front of off stump) all stuck in the memory as deliveries about which little could have been done. The wicket here has been an unusual one. In each of the three innings thus far, it has looked like a snakepit when the seamers are armed with a new, hard ball; once it has softened, the dryness underneath the grassy top has made the surface comparatively placid. Somerset picked two spinners in the expectation that it might turn as the game wore on, but movement off the seam, coupled with good pace and slightly irregular bounce, has been the key factor in keeping the scores down.Vince signalled in the aftermath of the game against Surrey last week that his side were “motivated to turn in a strong performance” to spoil Somerset’s party, and he appeared to have taken that mantra to heart in his innings. He took 23 balls to get off the mark, and was unbeaten on five after 43, before flying through the gears faster than a sixth-former in the outside lane in their first time on the motorway, creaming 14 fours as he reached a sublime hundred from 136. The pick of them were an outrageous one-two off Abell’s medium pace; the first a length ball whipped from outside off stump through midwicket, the second a late cut dabbed through third man for four.Within five overs of being joined by Abbott, batting at No. 10, Vince was faced with a field comprising a wide slip, and eight men on the boundary. It did little to deter him, and he manoeuvred the strike expertly in their unbeaten partnership, which stands at 73 overnight.”Wishing all the luck in the world to Somerset today! This could be our first County Championship in 600 years,” John Cleese had tweeted on Monday morning, and the club’s wait has been so long and agonising for their supporters that it might well feel as though he wasn’t too far out in his exaggerated calculations. In the film Clockwise, Cleese’s character Brian Stimpson cries: “It’s not the despair, Laura. I can take the despair. It’s the hope I can’t stand.” So it must feel in Taunton on days like this. There have been points at which Somerset have seemed in control of this game, but they now find themselves needing to make the highest total of the match in the fourth innings if they are to win.But today’s struggle with the bat effectively confirmed what was already apparent for Somerset: if they do win the title, it will likely be in spite of, rather than because of, their batting. No player averages more than 35 this season, while nobody is near the aggregate of 1000 runs that was once used as a benchmark. There are extenuating circumstances – only one ground, Chelmsford, has seen fewer runs scored per wicket than Taunton’s 23.95 – but the reality is that few teams win pennants without a single batsman having a notable season.Jason Kerr, the head coach, is not waiving the white flag just yet. “”I think the surface is changing,” he said, “and if we can get through with the new ball then I think we are in the game. Hampshire scored 400 in the third innings last week and it is a similar pitch to this. There is a great opportunity for us tomorrow.”It is fighting talk, but with Abbott in this form, getting through the new ball is hardly a simple task. And with the forecast for next week’s game looking decidedly iffy, it is clear that tomorrow’s events will go a long way towards determining the identity of this year’s champions.

The Blues' opening bid for Omorodion was quickly rejected by Atleti, who are awaiting a bid of at least £70m (€83m/$90m) for the 20-year-old, according to The Sun. That's a £28m disparity between their valuation of Omorodion and Chelsea's, so it's clear the two have some negotiating to do.

Chelsea's recruitment team has identified Omorodion as a talented young player with plenty of potential. And new head coach Enzo Maresca is also a fan of the Spain under-21 international, who spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Alaves.

DID YOU KNOW?

Maresca is keen to bring in a new striker in the summer in order to apply pressure on Nicolas Jackson, who scored 17 goals in all competitions in his inaugural Premier League season. The Blues have spoken to Newcastle and Aston Villa about Alexander Isak and Jhon Duran respectively, but the club won't be pushing ahead with a move for Isak.

Concern for Beale: Club planning moves for Sunderland stars Clarke and Jobe

A huge European club are reportedly planning a double swoop for two Sunderland players at the end of the season, according to a new transfer update.

Sunderland transfer news & promotion chances

The Black Cats have recovered well after the dire 1-0 defeat at home to Hull City last month, at which point there was definite pressure already growing on manager Michael Beale.

Since then, however, his side have picked up two wins and a draw from three Championship games, with 3-1 victories sealed at home to Stoke City and Plymouth Argyle, and a 1-1 draw at rivals Middlesbrough proving to be a solid result.

Some important business was completed in the January transfer window, in order to boost their promotion chances, with Callum Styles signing on loan from Barnsley until the end of the season, whereas Leo Hjelde and Romaine Mundle also joined on permanent deals.

There is the threat of certain Sunderland leaving in the coming months, however, with Jack Clarke a wanted man throughout January, as the likes of West Ham and Lazio looked to secure the signing of him. He stayed put for the time being, but he and others could make the move away soon.

Clarke and Bellingham could leave Sunderland

According to Gazzetta dello Sport [via Sport Witness], Lazio are eyeing a double swoop for Sunderland pair Clarke and Jobe Bellingham this summer, seeing them as exciting options to bring in.

There is no doubt that this update is hugely concerning for Black Cats supporters, considering the pair are arguably two of the first names on Beale's sheet.

Clarke is having a superb season, wreaking havoc in attacking areas, scoring 14 goals in 31 Championship appearances, not to mention chipping in with four assists, too. Meanwhile, Bellingham may be overshadowed by his world-famous brother Jude at the moment, but his performances have been excellent for Sunderland, with six goal contributions (five goals and one assist) coming his way in the league.

It is only natural that strong interest in the duo is going to emerge, in truth, given their huge long-term potential, but the fact that both could move on at exactly the same time could significantly weaken the Black Cats. Perhaps their best chance of retaining both is to seal promotion to the Premier League, but even then that may not be enough.

Sunderland struck gold on "stunning" star who's doubled in transfer value

Sunderland really did hit the jackpot signing this gem when they did.

By
Kelan Sarson

Feb 11, 2024

Should the pair move on to pastures new once the current season reaches its climax, it is essential that Sunderland receive as much money as possible, and they will feel that they can demand big fees for them.

West Ham were keen and Sunderland wanted £26m for Clarke last month, highlighting how expensive he could be, while Bellingham is still only 18 years of age, and is someone who could mature into something special over time if he threatens to get close to his brother's level, being hailed as "incredible" by Niall Quinn.
