Australia bank on tighter game to counter West Indies threat

Where Jason Holder’s team are counting on its aggression, Australia are hoping to induce errors by creating pressure with their bowling and fielding

Hodge: Australia attack’s versatility might get them over the line

Big PictureA lot about the meeting between Australia and West Indies at Trent Bridge will be determined by a single question: which West Indies side will turn up?If it is the one that razed Pakistan in their tournament opener, also at Trent Bridge, or the one that clouted New Zealand into submission in the warm-up match, then Australia may well be in for a very difficult time of it, having stuttered their way through an opening victory over Afghanistan in Bristol. However, Aaron Finch’s men have already beaten West Indies once on this tour, and comfortably at that, in their own warm-up match on a postage stamp of a ground in Hampshire. And prior to that, the Caribbean side were near enough bullied into losing a triangular series final to an increasingly confident and capable Bangladesh at picturesque Malahide in Ireland.Australia’s coach Justin Langer certainly gave some indication as to the capriciousness of West Indies cricket – in contrast to the awe-inspiring consistency – allied to flair, that he saw as a child in Perth when watching the teams of Clive Lloyd and Viv Richards. “One thing we know about West Indies, particularly with Andre Russell and Chris Gayle, it’s going to be exciting cricket,” Langer said. “When I was growing up it was calypso cricket and I think we’re seeing plenty of signs of calypso cricket, the way they’re running in, bowling fast, they’re not necessarily going to be bowling the same spot every ball like Curtly Ambrose, but it’s going to be exciting to watch and they all try to hit sixes most balls. Darren Bravo’s a little more orthodox but [it’s] always exciting playing West Indies. When I was growing up, they were my heroes and they’re not my heroes today because I hope we beat them on Thursday.”While Jason Holder’s team have sought to be aggressive in everything they do, Langer and Finch have resolved to play a tighter game. They will be hoping to use the pressure of their bowling and fielding, in addition to the resourcefulness of a batting line-up being kept as deep as possible by the preference of Nathan Coulter-Nile over others, to corner West Indies into errors. Chief among their methods will be liberal use of the short ball, something the Caribbean side also used to good effect against Pakistan. The likelihood of a dry surface at Trent Bridge, as seen in the game between England and Pakistan, will also encourage balls banged in with a cross-seam for another reason – extracting old-ball movement.IDI via Getty Images

In the spotlightIt’s a little over six years since Mitchell Starc laid waste to West Indies on a memorable afternoon at the WACA Ground, finding extremes of swing and pace that remain in the mind’s eye of all who witnessed it. He produced a similarly destructive afternoon in 2015 at Eden Park, taking Australia within a wicket of a World Cup pool-game victory their batting scarcely deserved. This time around, he comes to Trent Bridge having looked to be revving into strong form against Afghanistan. While short balls will be a focus of the Australian attack, Starc’s most dangerous deliveries are undoubtedly full, fast and swinging down the line of the stumps. Mixed-up footwork created by liberal use of the short ball can often allow for the full ball to be even more dangerous, as Gayle, Bravo and Holder will remember from that day in Perth. If it was his batting that turned so many heads in the IPL, Andre Russell proved against Pakistan he is also more than capable of being a match-winner with the ball. Against Australia, Russell has provided plenty of evidence of his skills in the BBL, but he last played them in ODIs in 2013, meaning that first-hand experience among his opponents will be relatively slight. In the warm-up game in Hampshire, Russell faced only four deliveries, bowled by Adam Zampa, and delivered three overs for 17. If West Indies are to win, they will need much more out of Russell, and both sides know it.Team newsAustralia have flagged an unchanged line-up, resisting the possibility of recalling Nathan Lyon as a second spinner in place of Nathan Coulter-Nile.Australia (probable) 1 Aaron Finch (capt), 2 David Warner, 3 Usman Khawaja, 4 Steven Smith, 5 Glenn Maxwell, 6 Marcus Stoinis, 7 Alex Carey (wk), 8 Pat Cummins, 9 Nathan Coulter-Nile, 10 Mitchell Starc, 11 Adam ZampaKemar Roach is waiting in the wings should West Indies want to alter the balance of their pace-bowling attack after its undemanding outing against Pakistan. Gayle and Russell were both at training on the eve of the game. “Chris was at practice for the last couple days, so Chris for me is all well and ready to go. Andre will be obviously assessed today, and we’re very, very hopeful that he’ll be fit tomorrow.” Holder said, adding that the team will go by what the two men have to say about their fitness.West Indies (possible): 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Shai Hope (wk), 3 Darren Bravo, 4 Nicholas Pooran, 5 Shimron Hetmyer, 6 Andre Russell, 7 Jason Holder (capt), 8 Carlos Brathwaite, 9 Ashley Nurse, 10 Sheldon Cottrell, 11 Oshane ThomasPitch and conditionsTrent Bridge, known for high-scoring, did not disappoint in Pakistan’s unexpected victory over England. It will be the 481 pitch, by the way, but the pitch and square can be expected to be dry, with the hunt for reverse swing – by legal means, of course – likely to be some sort of a factor.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Strategy punts Spin bowling was a strong suit for Australia in their warm-up against West Indies, as Zampa, Glenn Maxwell and Steven Smith bowled a combined 14 overs for returns of 3 for 67. The ground dimensions that day were small, but there has been no inclination from Langer at least to add to the repertoire by calling in Lyon. “That is because of their left-handers. That said we probably won’t bowl two spinners here against West Indies. There’s always thoughts about Nathan Lyon, every game there’s thoughts about playing Nathan Lyon, but Adam Zampa’s doing a really good job for us. There is thinking about him because of their left-handers but Adam Zampa has a very good wrong’un, good top spinner, Glenn Maxwell’s bowling well, so hopefully we’ll get some balance there. Some of the other grounds we might look to play two spinners or the match-ups for the offspinner will be more appropriate but probably not here.” Either way, Holder’s men will need to find a way to deal more effectively with Zampa and Maxwell in particular, mixing strike-rotation with judicious attack. West Indies have made a clear decision to give the new ball to bowlers who will gain swing and seam, reserving the “bang it in” merchants until after some of the Kookaburra’s shine has worn off. They will be the latest group of pacemen to try to exploit Finch’s well-documented flaw when facing deliveries moving back into him from outside the off stump, as classically illustrated by Sri Lanka’s Nuwan Pradeep during a warm-up game that otherwise went swimmingly for the Australians at Southampton. Finch, having made an aggressive 66 against Afghanistan, appears to have found the freedom to launch in the fashion of his best days, while his partner Warner tries to find his best as an international opener after a year’s suspension. The combination of an open, aggressive Finch and probing new ball work from the West Indies has great risk/reward potential for both sides.Stats and Trivia Australia have won only three of eight ODI appearances at Trent Bridge, and their most recent match here was a 242-run hiding by England last year. By contrast, West Indies have only lost once in eight games at the venue, and that was as far back as 1984. Of all Australia and West Indies bowlers to have competed against one another, only Len Pascoe’s 21 wickets at 13.52 from eight matches have come at a cheaper rate than Mitchell Starc’s 16 at 13.87 in six. Quotes”We expect some fireworks from the West Indies. There’s going to be times where the boys are going to have to take a deep breath and keep smiling and bowling their best ball. But that comes with experience and that’s what great teams and great players do.”

Man Utd hold talks over signing £50m star who’s ‘similar to Kane’

Manchester United's January transfer window has been quiet so far, but they could be in for a busy last stint with Erik ten Hag demanding reinforcement.

The Red Devils certainly need inspiration, with the side sitting eighth in the Premier League having scored fewer goals than all but three sides in the division.

A new signing could provide that, with a striker the main target for the Dutch boss, who wants to improve his side's output in the final third.

A striker is Ten Hag's priority

According to transfer insider Ben Jacobs via GIVEMESPORT, United are interested in signing Joshua Zirkzee. Below is what the journalist had to say:

"It's not easy for Manchester United to find a striker in this window, but Zirkzee is a genuine target and there has already been some early contact between the clubs."

As mentioned, a deal this month is unlikely, with the Red Devils financial fair play guidelines and Zirkzee's reported £50m price tag hindering the process.

Ten Hag's biggest problem since the summer has been finding a way to get his attackers firing, with United scoring 1.14 goals per game, which is down from 1.53 last season.

The focus has been on Rasmus Hojlund, who has netted just twice in 16 Premier League games, but Bruno Fernandes (3), Marcus Rashford (4), and Antony (0) have all underperformed in attack as well.

The player who could help ease their attacking woes is Zirkzee, who has been described as a "special" player by Italian journalist Pietro Blazano Prota. The 22-year-old number nine has scored seven goals and created two assists, which is the best goal-contribution record for the Bologna team by three.

Unsurprisingly, football writer Ben Mattinson has compared Zirkzee to former Man United target and Premier League legend Harry Kane, stating that the two are "so similar."

That certainly bodes well for any prospective transfer, and with that in mind, the table below showcases a handful of statistics from their respective leagues that compare the duo.

Although Kane obviously wipes the floor with Zirkzee pretty much across the board, notably for chance conversion and scoring goals, there are still certain similarities between the two. Firstly, they are both strikers who love to get involved in the play and use their intelligence to affect the game from a deeper position, as you can see by the touches, progressive passes, and key passes.

They're both also excellent finishers who outperform their xG, and although it cannot be displayed via statistics, Zirkzee and Kane are extremely composed and will often find space in the box, regardless of how little room there is. The ability to shift the ball quickly to either foot inside the penalty area is what makes them both so dangerous.

The signing of Zirkzee would make United far less predictable in the final third, and he could become a much cheaper alternative to Kane for Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Papua New Guinea suspends ten Under-19 players for a year

The Papua New Guinea cricket board has suspended 10 of its Under-19 players for a year for bringing the game into disrepute. The sanction is in relation to their conduct in Japan, where they were favourites to win a qualifying tournament for the Under-19 World Cup in 2020; however, 10 players missed a crucial game against Japan and the team had to forfeit the game because they didn’t have enough players to field an XI.Cricket PNG chief executive Greg Campbell said: “The behaviour of our players is not what we would expect from international cricketers of any age. The players have expressed sincere regret at their actions and in addition to their suspension from cricket, they will undertake a comprehensive rehabilitation programme over the next 12 months.”ICC General Counsel and COO Iain Higgins added: “This has been a highly unusual incident by a group of young players and I would like to thank Cricket PNG for acting swiftly and decisively. It sends out a clear message that the sport will not tolerate this sort of behaviour at ICC events.”We are obviously extremely disappointed with the behavior of the players, but we are satisfied that Cricket PNG has delivered a suitable and proportionate sanction and programme for rehabilitation. Therefore, the ICC will not take any further action against any of the players.”In addition to being suspended, the 10 players will take part in 60 hours of community service and also attend a counselling programme.

Joe Burns diagnosed with 'fatigue disorder'

Burns ended his stint with Lancashire in county cricket after one match last month and it has been revealed he was suffering extended symptoms of fatigue and burn out

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Jun-2019Australia opening batsman Joe Burns has been diagnosed with a fatigue disorder stemming from a virus he suffered in October 2018 which has left his hopes of a place in the Ashes squad hanging in the balance.Burns ended his stint with Lancashire in county cricket after one match last month, and it has been revealed he was suffering extended symptoms of fatigue and burn-out, the timeline meaning he was playing with the condition for much of last season.Although there is no timeframe yet for his return, a Queensland Cricket statement said it was anticipated he would be available in the “near future”. It is understood that the Ashes series, which starts on August 1, remains a realistic aim for Burns.”After consultation with specialists, he was diagnosed with a protracted post-infectious fatigue disorder dating back to an October 2018 viral infection,” Queensland Cricket said. “Joe is currently undertaking a treatment period of rest and recuperation. A definite prognosis for a recovery is unavailable at present; however it is anticipated he will be fully available for cricket in the near future.”Burns is currently an incumbent opening batsman in the Test team after he was recalled to face Sri Lanka earlier this season. He made 180 in the second Test in Canberra – his fourth hundred in 16 Tests – but even before the illness his performance did not guarantee him an Ashes berth with David Warner’s return to international cricket. The men’s Ashes squad will be named very late – after the inter-squad game between Australia and Australia A in Southampton at the end of July – to give the selectors as much time as possible to assess their options.Burns was not named in the Australia A squad, instead left to take up his deal with Lancashire but, if his recovery goes well, the selectors could consider adding him to the group.

Man Utd can repeat Fernandes masterclass after bidding to sign £69m “monster”

Manchester United have failed to impress on every front this season.

Erik ten Hag’s side are currently eighth in the Premier League, but by the end of the weekend’s action, they could be in the bottom half of the table.

With that in mind, the boss will be desperate to improve his squad as United aim to climb into a European spot.

Man Utd transfers latest – Fernandes repeat inbound

According to The Sun, Man United have submitted a bid for Morten Hjulmand that would involve Facundo Pellistri moving in the opposite direction.

However, it has been rejected by Sporting, who will settle for not a penny less than his £69m release clause.

Morten Hjulmand in action.

This represents quite the price hike for a man who was signed from Lecce for only £15m back in the summer of 2023.

The Red Devils scouts have been watching the midfielder this season, but a move this January is looking unlikely.

ByCharlie Smith Feb 1, 2024 How Morten Hjulmand compares to Bruno Fernandes

It is reasonable to say that Bruno Fernandes has been United’s best signing since Sir Alex Ferguson's era. The Portuguese magician has become arguably the most important player in the side since joining from Sporting for £46.5m.

Over 212 games, the 29-year-old has registered 129 goal contributions and now wears the captain's armband.

Ten Hag will be hoping that he can repeat the Fernandes masterclass by signing another Sporting midfielder in the January transfer window, in the form of Hjulmand.

Bruno Fernandes

The Danish midfielder only joined Sporting in the summer, but his influence on the side has been enormous. The 24-year-old has featured in 24 matches this season, scoring one goal and creating two, while often playing in the midfield two of a 3-4-2-1 formation. In that respect, he's positionally different to the aforementioned Fernandes but their ability to influence the play is vast.

But what is Hjulmand’s style of play based on statistics from the 2023/24 Primeira Liga season?

The former Serie A star is a player who likes to get on the ball and dictate the play, as highlighted by his high number of touches and passes completed. If the move was to be completed, Hjulmand would slot alongside Kobbie Mainoo and replace Scott McTominay in the starting XI.

The FC Kobenhaven youth player would bring control to the United midfield, which the Scot currently doesn’t, as his touches and passes completed per 90 is in the bottom 20% of Premier League midfielders, according to FBref.

Furthermore, Hjulmand is extremely solid out of possession, even being labelled as a “monster” by football journalist Zach Lowy.

The Sporting rock protects the backline with a proactive approach, and he often regains possession via tackles and reading the game to recover the ball.

The fact he can tackle dribblers would also make United much more secure in transitions, which is where Ten Hag’s team have been vulnerable.

Morten Hjulmand in action.

Overall, Hjulmand is a typical defensive midfielder who would provide so much security to the United team. Although the fee is steep, Ten Hag should look to repeat the Fernandes trick this month.

'Don’t want to upset Erik again!' – Gary Lineker risks Ten Hag's wrath as he names potential next Man Utd manager just days after grilling Dutchman on live TV

  • Mauricio Pochettino seen as ideal replacement
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The tension between the two men was palpable after Saturday's FA Cup final, where United clinched a surprising victory over Manchester City. The build-up to the match was overshadowed by intense speculation that Ten Hag’s position was in jeopardy regardless of the outcome, with the Dutchman having overseen United's worst-ever Premier League season.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The exit narrative further gained traction during a post-match BBC interview where Lineker and Alan Shearer probed Ten Hag about his future. The Dutchman, visibly frustrated, condemned the media’s “unfair” treatment of him and his team throughout the season. Lineker, however, defended the interview, maintaining that it was within the bounds of journalistic inquiry.

  • WHAT LINEKER SAID

Lineker has further risked Ten Hag’s wrath by tipping former Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino for the United job on the podcast.

"There were a few rumours about Pochettino and he said a few things that made you think all was not well at Chelsea," Lineker said. "But I just couldn’t believe it [his sacking]. It doesn’t make any sense. In terms of Pochettino, the way they finished the season, and his position as a coach, I don’t think that’s gone down at all in people’s minds, I think he’ll be fine and will get a good job. I’m tempted to say possibly Manchester United but we don’t want to upset Erik or the United fans again!"

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Pochettino’s tenure at Chelsea was short-lived but not without merit. Despite a challenging season, he managed to steer the club to a respectable sixth place, ensuring European football next season. Alan Shearer, echoing Lineker’s sentiments, suggested that Pochettino might be better off away from the tumultuous environment at Stamford Bridge. “He’s better off out of there. He’s a good man and a good coach, he will get a really good job somewhere,” Shearer remarked. "That is the very, very best he could have done when you look at where they finished. He got them to a final and a semi-final and back into Europe. I honestly don’t think he could have done any better than he did. It’s just a mad football club. There must have been a fall-out but whoever goes in there can never complain about what goes on because you take that job knowing it’s a bit of a mad football club."

Fabrizio Romano says West Ham are eyeing World Cup forward for January

West Ham United are believed to have their eyes on a "talented" forward who played at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and he's apparently one of Tim Steidten's top targets.

As previously reported, the Hammers are keen to sign a new forward and bolster manager David Moyes' ranks in an attacking sense.

Both strikers and wingers are apparently being looked at, with West Ham looking short in some areas. Michail Antonio's injury problems, combined with Moyes' lack of faith in Danny Ings, have forced Moyes to play star winger Jarrod Bowen in a makeshift striker role for much of the campaign.

Summer signing Mohammed Kudus, who has played extremely well since his transfer from Ajax last summer, is also at the Africa Cup of Nations right now.

Said Benrahma could leave West Ham this window too, according to reports, so it's perhaps imperative West Ham shore up their forward options before January 31.

As per club insider ExWHUemployee, the Irons and technical director Steidten have shortlisted Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah, Stuttgart's Serhou Guirassy, Norwich City starlet Jonathan Rowe and a few others as candidates to come in this month.

Now, reliable transfer source Fabrizio Romano has shared an update on West Ham's transfer plans this window, and it involves another forward in former Spurs ace Steven Bergwijn.

West Ham eyeing Bergwijn as top January target

According to Romano, West Ham are seriously interested in signing Bergwijn as one of their top targets for January, coming amid his impressive season at Ajax.

It hasn't exactly been a dream campaign for Eredivisie's heavyweights, but the Netherlands international is perhaps a shining light with his seven goals and two assists in the Dutch top flight alone.

According to WhoScored, Bergwijn is currently Ajax's best-performing player by average match rating. Indeed, the 26-year-old seemingly hasn't looked back since departing Tottenham in the summer of 2022.

He also made four appearances for his country at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, with journalist John Cross once lauding Bergwijn as a "big-game" asset to have.

Steven Bergwijn for Ajax

Former Tottenham keeper Paul Robinson, speaking to Football Insider, once hailed the Dutchman as a "top player" despite his mixed spell overall in north London.

“I really rate him. I think he is a top player," said the ex-England shot stopper.

“I’m sure he will go to Ajax and show just what a talented player he is playing week in, week out. We will see the reason why Spurs bought him in the first place.

“I don’t think it will be long before we see him in the Premier League again. Another club will probably look to bring him back over after a couple of seasons.

“He was just unlucky at Spurs. He was always a player that I liked.”

Labuschagne sparkles while Burns returns home

#AsheswatchJoe Burns’ stint with Lancashire lasted just one game – in which he made 10 – as he flew home for personal reasons. No date has been set for his return. He was signed for 10 games. He made 54 in Glamorgan’s last one-day game before peeling off a second century for the season in Division Two of the County Championship. Labuschagne and Nicholas Selman both scored centuries and shared a 231-run stand to give Glamorgan a chance to win the game, after being made to follow-on. However, it ultimately ended in a draw. Injury listJames Pattinson missed Nottinghamshire’s last three fixtures due to a niggling side strain. He missed the semi-final loss to Somerset in the Royal London One-Day Cup and then missed the next championship fixture against Essex. It was expected he would return for the match against Hampshire which began on Monday but he didn’t take the field. Pattinson is part of both Australia A squads, but those who are currently in the UK do not need to join the squad until June 15, meaning he could be available for Nottinghamshire’s next two fixtures if he is fit. Daniel Worrall’s county season with Gloucestershire is already over after he was diagnosed with stress fractures in his lower back.Performance of the weekLabuschagne’s second century of the English summer will certainly have pleased Justin Langer and the selectors. The manner of the century, coming under pressure after his team followed on, would also please the selectors. He is not in the Australia A four-day squad but the selectors were firm in stating that those playing county cricket would still be heavily considered for the Ashes.

Zagueiro do Voltaço, Gabriel Pereira quer escrever história como fez Igor Gomes, atualmente no Barcelona

Primeiro o coletivo. Faz questão de ressaltar. A fase é boa e o Voltaço é o melhor time do Estadual em aproveitamento no momento. Depois de passar de fase na Copa do Brasil no meio de semana, eliminando o Castanhal-PA, fora de casa, ele está esperançoso com mais uma boa atuação da equipe:

– O jogo foi muito difícil. O time do Castanhal é bem montado. Graças a Deus. – contou.
