Leeds: Whites sold a ‘hero’ for £1m, he then went onto become worth £50m

While there have been turbulent times at Leeds United in the modern era, one constant amid the chaos has been the club's impressive production of young talent, having continually churned out promising gems at Elland Road.

Whether it be the likes of Alan Smith and James Milner, or Kalvin Phillips and Archie Gray, the Yorkshire giants have become masters at nurturing and developing potential stars of the future, boasting an academy set-up that most would be envious of.

The only downside to that conveyor belt of talent is that not all of those emerging stars go on to blossom with the Whites, with former England international, Danny Rose, for instance, one example of an academy graduate who was arguably sold on too soon – and too cheaply – by the club.

How much did Leeds sell Danny Rose for?

The Doncaster-born gem had risen up through the ranks at Leeds and looked set to force his way into the first-team reckoning at Elland Road, notably being named on the bench for a League Cup clash with Barnet at the start of the 2006/07 campaign.

Having turned down advances from Chelsea in 2005 amid the promise of earning his debut for the Whites, Rose would ultimately fail to make a single appearance for the club prior to his eventual departure in 2007, seemingly suffering from the sacking of Kevin Blackwell:

"Had Kevin Blackwell stayed 100 per cent I would have played for Leeds, but he lost his job in September or October. Then Dennis Wise came and it was a little bit different. In the end I just decided to leave. I wasn't enjoying it."

Danny Rose vs Leeds

With Leeds – who were embroiled in financial struggles at the time – slipping into League One at the end of the season, the teenager opted to finally make the move to London in order to join Tottenham Hotspur, with the Lilywhites forking out what proved to be a bargain fee of just £1m.

Where is Danny Rose now?

A Premier League debut thunderbolt against rivals Arsenal set the tone for what was to prove a largely stellar stint at N17 for the midfielder-turned-full-back, as he established himself as a real "hero" at Spurs, in the words of writer Ryan Rosenblatt.

With Leeds continuing to ply their trade in the EFL until 2020, Rose, meanwhile, went on to eventually become a regular fixture for the north Londoners after enjoying a handful of spells out on loan initially, racking up 213 appearances in all competitions for the club.

The attack-minded menace – who contributed 38 goals and assists in that time from left-back – was notably part of the side that reached the Champions League final under Mauricio Pochettino in 2019, having also made 29 appearances for his country at senior level.

At his pomp, the 5 foot 8 ace was even mooted for a £50m switch to rivals Manchester United in 2017, with that a stark indication of the quality of player that the Elland Road outfit had let slip from their grasp.

Since such notable highs, however, it is fair to say that has been a difficult few years for the 33-year-old, having not played since leaving Watford at the end of the 2021/22 campaign – a year on from being cast aside by Tottenham.

Even so, those woes should not overshadow what has been a commendable career for the defender in English football, with it a crying shame that the Leeds faithful never got to witness him in action for the Yorkshire side.

Tottenham scouts wowed by "really fast" striker, but Arsenal are also keen

Tottenham Hotspur scouts have been left impressed by a "really fast" striker they watched in action last week, according to a report.

What's the latest Tottenham transfer news?

Tottenham did not end up bringing in a direct replacement for Harry Kane in the summer transfer window, with Ange Postecoglou opting to keep the faith in Richarlison, but they could make a move for a new striker in January, if the latest reports are to be believed.

Spurs are said to be considering a move for Inter Milan striker Marcus Thuram, having been keeping track of his progress in the Serie A since arriving in the summer, but they will need to fork out approximately £40m to test the Italian club's resolve.

Ivan Toney has also emerged as a target for the Lilywhites, having outlined his desire to leave Brentford in the January transfer window, and the Bees would not stand in his way, as long as their £60m asking price is matched. There are a number of Premier League clubs circling for Toney, including rivals Chelsea, with TEAMtalk revealing the Blues are set to bring in a new striker in January, and they have also identified Feyenoord's Santiago Gimenez as an option.

Mauricio Pochettino may have to do battle with his former club, however, as Tottenham recently sent scouts to run the rule over the striker in Feyenoord's fiery Eredivisie clash with Ajax, which ended up being suspended due to crowd unrest. 90min report that scouts from a number of clubs were in attendance, including Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea, and they were very impressed with what they saw, as the Mexican scored twice and provided an assist before the game was brought to a halt around the hour mark.

The 22-year-old committed his long-term future to Feyenoord in August, penning a new contract to extend his stay at the Dutch club until 2027, but it remains to be seen whether his head would be turned amid widespread interest from the Premier League and across Europe.

How good is Santiago Gimenez?

Former Liverpool man Dirk Kuyt has described the forward as "really fast", so it is clear that his pace is one of his key qualities, but he is also an exceptional goalscorer, as displayed by his phenomenal record in front of net over the past year.

The Mexico international has averaged 0.74 non-penalty goals per 90, which places him in the 98th percentile when compared to his positional peers playing at a similar level, and he has been particularly impressive in front of goal so far this season.

Feyenoord's Santiago Gimenez

In five Eredivisie games, the former CD Cruz Azul man has scored six goals, and that is without including the two goals he picked up against Ajax at the weekend, given that the game was suspended in the second half.

Although it must be taken into account that Gimenez is still yet to prove himself in one of Europe's top leagues, his performances have been very impressive, especially considering he is just 22-years-old, and Tottenham should consider a January approach.

Australia women seek first T20 series win in nearly three years

England, meanwhile, are hoping to recover quickly after losing their last two matches back-to-back

The Preview by Annesha Ghosh30-Mar-2018

BCCI

Big PictureIf the Ashes-retaining campaign had been “a good starting point” for Australia to stage a turnaround after relinquishing their world titles in both limited-overs formats, captain Meg Lanning’s return to international cricket now awaits commemoration in the form of a double series triumph.A T20 series victory for the first time in nearly three years beckons Australia, soon after their 3-0 ODI series win against India. Barring the eight-wicket loss against England, in Lanning’s absence, Australia have looked menacing in their approach and application, with their batting and bowling units syncing perfectly.Heather Knight’s England, on the other hand, would be wary after suffering two successive defeats in as many days ahead of the final. Having razed down both their opponents in their first two games, fielding all their three debutants on tour, they found themselves restricted to 96 in their last encounter against Australia, and yielded to India for 107 on Thursday.England are likely, therefore, to return to a more tested combination, featuring old hand Jenny Gunn, who became the first cricketer to play 100 T20Is, on March 25.Form guideAustraliaWWLWL (last five completed matches, most recent first)
England LLWWWIn the spotlightMuch of England’s fortunes on Saturday will rest on their most prolific run-getter in this tournament. That it was the same batsman, Danielle Wyatt, who also scripted the side’s come-from-behind, points-levelling Ashes campaign in November will not be lost on Australia. Apart from Wyatt’s maiden international ton, which trumped Beth Mooney’s 70-ball 117 at the Manuka Oval, Australia will do well to also bear in mind her demolition of India six days ago.To outdo their fiercest rivals a second time this series, Australia will require the sharp-shooting skills of their only bowler to claim a hat-trick, Megan Schutt, who jointly leads the tournament wickets chart with six scalps. With a little aid off the pitch, Schutt’s change-ups, especially her cutters, can fox anyone. She will hope to have the support of the left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen, who has been the stingiest bowler – among those who have bowled 14 overs or more – in this tournament.Team newsBeth Mooney, who missed Australia’s last game with a mild abdominal strain, briefly trained in the nets on Friday and is likely to be available for selection. Rachael Haynes, however, missed training due to illness.Australia (possible): 1 Alyssa Healy (wk), 2 Beth Mooney, 3 Meg Lanning (capt), 4 Ellyse Perry, 5 Elyse Villani, 6 Ashleigh Gardner, 7 Rachael Haynes/Nicola Carey, 8 Delissa Kimmince, 9 Jess Jonassen, 10 Megan Schutt 11 Amanda-Jade WellingtonEngland quick bowler Anya Shrubsole is out of contention as she continues to recover from a shoulder injury.England (possible): 1 Danielle Wyatt, 2 Amy Jones (wk), 3 Tammy Beaumont, 4 Natalie Sciver, 5 Heather Knight (capt), 6 Fran Wilson, 7 Jenny Gunn, 8 Alice Davidson-Richards, 9 Natasha Farrant, 10 Danielle Hazell, 11 Sophie Ecclestone/Alex HartleyPitch and conditionsThe tracks at Brabourne Stadium have been so flat that three of the 10 highest women’s T20I totals were amassed over the past week. However, if the same track as the one on which England played back-to-back matches against Australia and India is to be used, the sluggishness of the surface should keep the spinners interested. In that case, a low-scoring contest cannot be ruled out.Stats and trivia England opener Danielle Wyatt needs 29 runs to surpass her Indian counterpart Smriti Mandhana as the leading run-scorer in the series. Australia’s last series victory in T20Is came in August 2015, when they consigned Ireland to a 3-0 clean sweep.Quotes”Been a while since we got a T20I series win. If we get over the line tomorrow, the girls will be really pleased about that.”
“Two defeats is not ideal but T20 is a very fickle game, it changes very quickly. Looking to turn it around and put in a good performance.”

Will Dhoni's criticism fire up CSK bowlers?

Less than 48 hours after MS Dhoni pulled his boys up for not executing plans properly in the field, they come up against the wily Sunrisers

The Preview by Alagappan Muthu12-May-20185:23

Manjrekar: Sunrisers have all their bases covered

Form guide (most recent match first)

Chennai Super Kings: lost to Rajasthan Royals by four wickets, beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by six wickets, lost to Kolkata Knight Riders by six wickets

Sunrisers Hyderabad: beat Delhi Daredevils by nine wickets, beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by five runs, beat Delhi Daredevils by seven wickets

Big PictureRemember all those times you flunked a test and were sent to extra coaching before the crack of dawn? Well, Chennai Super Kings might experience some of that as they prepare to meet the already-qualified Sunrisers Hyderabad.MS Dhoni actually looked like the dad who just didn’t know what to do with his kid – shrugging and shaking his head in exasperation – on Friday. After protecting his rag-tag bunch from cat-calls of “you’re too old” and “you field like a hologram”, the man has had enough. Execution matters, he said. Planning alone won’t work, he said. The bowlers need to commit to the plans, he said. Now, there would almost always be a pesky friend in this scenario, one who scores 90s and 100s all the time, sniggering away in the background. That’s Kane Williamson and his boys. They’re through to the knockouts of the IPL and they passed that test despite a ton of out-of-syllabus questions set by Professor Pant.CSK’s bowling is only threatening on slower pitches. With the ball not coming onto the bat, their spinners suffocate oppositions. But the problem is Sunrisers have two of the very best in that very art – Rashid Khan and Shakib Al Hasan. So perhaps they should hope for a batting pitch so they can outgun the table-toppers?In the newsThe shoulder injury that kept Wriddhiman Saha out of Sunrisers’ last match has not healed completely yet. Shreevats Goswami may get another game on Sunday.Super Kings have once again arranged a train to bring 1000 fans from Chennai to Pune to watch the match.Previous meetingCSK were going nowhere until Ambati Rayudu made the scoreboard move like errant children under the glare of the headmaster and set up a four-run win over Sunrisers.Likely XIsChennai Super Kings: 1 Shane Watson, 2 Faf du Plessis, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 Ambati Rayudu, 5 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 6 Ravindra Jadeja, 7 Dwayne Bravo, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Karn Sharma, 10 Shardul Thakur, 11 Lungi NgidiSunrisers Hyderabad: 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Alex Hales, 3 Kane Williamson (capt), 4 Shakib Al Hasan, 5 Manish Pandey, 6 Yusuf Pathan, 7 Rashid Khan, 8 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Siddharth Kaul, 11 Sandeep SharmaStrategy puntOffspin has worked against Dhoni (strike rate 92) and Suresh Raina (strike rate 112). To do that Sunrisers may want to bring in Mohammad Nabi, but use him after Ambati Rayudu (strike rate 148) and Shane Watson (strike rate 157) are out of the picture because they’ve been wallopping offspinnersMaybe Rashid Khan could target Rayudu (strike rate of 127 v legspin) and Shakib Al Hasan can work on Watson, who has faced 11 balls from a left-arm spinner and lost his wicket twice. All figures mentioned are for this IPL season only.On the flip side, CSK can try Karn Sharma against Shakib. The head-to-head in all T20s reads: seven balls, zero runs and two wickets.Stats that matter Sunrisers have won six matches in a row so far, making it their longest winning streak in the IPL Watson needs 11 runs to get to 3000 in the IPL. And he has been in such form this season that he’s not been troubled by fast bowling (strike rate 154, average 39) or spin bowling (strike rate 151, average 30) Kane Williamson will be vital for Sunrisers to negotiate Super Kings because he’s been magic against slow bowling this IPL: 202 runs in 164 balls, only one dismissal Dwayne Bravo has probably been the only fast bowler CSK can trust and he’s got a good record against Sunrisers: 13 wickets in 29 overs at an economy rate of 7.6Fantasy pickTake Dhoni. He averages 61 and strikes at 158 against Sunrisers. He is also fairly prolific in Pune with 456 runs in 16 innings.Sandeep Sharma (six wickets in 14 overs) and Shakib (four wickets in 11 overs) also have an excellent record at the MCA stadium.

Arsenal: Gunners star has seen his value soar by 2766% under Arteta

Arsenal may find themselves fifth in the Premier League, unbeaten after four games, but it has hardly been the most inspiring start from Mikel Arteta's men.

Struggling to find their rhythm and failing to blow away sides they really should have, it is a testament to their sluggish form that they would only beat Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest by slender one-goal margins and drew with Fulham, despite having won 2-0 against the Eagles away from home, 5-0 at home to the Tricky Trees and 2-1 against the Cottagers last year.

The hope will be that, following the much-needed international break, the Gunners can recapture that form of old which saw them lead the title race for so long last season and reannounce themselves as a favourite to do so again this year.

Bukayo Saka for Arsenal

However, whilst the tactics and motivation from the manager will be key, some of their top players must also step up in order to aid this process. Martin Odegaard, as captain and a key creator, will want to inspire the likes of Gabriel Martinelli, William Saliba, Declan Rice and more to find their feet for next week's clash with Everton.

Despite that, there is one man who seemingly never needs any incentive to shine, but does so on nearly every occasion.

Who is Arsenal's best player?

Hale End has grown into one of the most famous academies in England for a reason, with a rich history of producing some fine talent such as Paul Merson, Tony Adams and more.

However, their latest star graduate could usurp them all with the quality he boasts, as Bukayo Saka continues to go from strength to strength despite his youth.

Having been handed his debut by Unai Emery of all people, the 22-year-old has swiftly grown into a mainstay within the senior squad, having actually featured in every one of their league matches across the last two full campaigns.

Growing into an England international too, it seems impossible to predict just how high the tricky wideman can go.

Podcaster and radio host Boyd Hilton helped to preface his potential though, by suggesting he is already at the elite level: "Saka must be one of the best players in the world right now. Unplayable. I almost think his all-round adorable-ness makes him under-rated."

This has fed into his fine personal start to the term, with his 7.73 average match rating in the league making him Arsenal's best performer, and the 15th-highest-rated in the entire division. Such a figure is buoyed by his offensive excellence, with his two goals and one assist feeding into his 3.5 key passes and three tackles recorded per game, via Sofascore.

His talent is undeniable, but few comment on how tireless a work rate he maintains, with his mentality likely what has forged him into one of Europe's top players.

Already Saka is a leader of this Arsenal side despite his youth, leading the way for the rest of his teammates to follow. Arteta will be hoping that the 5 foot 10 whiz can maintain such form once domestic football restarts and that his squad can seek to match the unparalleled levels that the academy graduate continues to reach.

How much was Bukayo Saka worth four years ago?

Having made his Premier League debut as a 17-year-old, Emery clearly envisioned the bright future that the forward is currently enjoying. Back in 2019, Saka was a name merely whispered around the Emirates, with murmurs of his potential still yet to be proven.

As such, his market value at the time looks nothing like his current one.

Four years ago, just after he had broken into the first team, Transfermarkt still suggested that the unproven teenager was worth an admirable €7m (£6m) when Emery was at the helm. However, that was a figure that had only just begun to rise, with it having hit €22m (£19m) by March 2020.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery.

Since then it has been nothing but an upward trajectory for the 28-cap superstar, who will hope to soon be reaching the heights of Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe with regard to market value.

What is Bukayo Saka's market value now?

For now, Saka can be proud of the financial weight that his name already holds.

Understandably untouchable with regard to the transfer market, the recent notion outlined by Paul Merson that Liverpool could pry him from north London was one met with widespread ridicule. A boyhood Gooner, the Emirates has played witness to his growth not only as a footballer but as a human, from a wide-eyed winger with big dreams, to an often-unstoppable ace with the world now at his feet.

His current value helps to emphasise this, with CIES Football Observatory offering the greatest praise by placing a €200m (£172m) figure beside his name. That ensures the young winger's value has soared an astronomical 2766% in the last four years.

bukayo-saka

Whilst a mouth-watering fee, few could argue that Saka has not earned such a lofty valuation. After all, he is widely regarded now as one of the best in his position in the entire world, which England teammate Conor Gallagher supported: "He is right up there [among the best] and he is only getting better. He is a special player and to get a hat-trick was amazing for him.

“I have played with Bukayo since I think the Under-19s. Even then you could see that he would become a top player and to see how he has progressed until now has been amazing and I am sure he is going to get even better.”

Why is Bukayo Saka worth that much?

Whilst the Chelsea midfielder helped to emphasise why he is worth so much with his glowing testimony, his consistently outstanding and improving performances over the last few years stand as further proof.

Just last term saw Saka record 14 goals and 11 assists in the Premier League, with Mohamed Salah the only other player to hit double figures for both goals and assists.

This built on his tally of 18 goal contributions from the year prior in the league again, marking another steady improvement.

As his performances continue to grow in stature, so too will his value. With the Gunners also now poised to enter the Champions League too, marking the right winger's first foray into such a competition, performances at that level could help elevate that aforementioned figure to standalone heights at the top of world football.

Liverpool news: FSG send scouts to watch Man City, Man Utd, Arsenal target

Liverpool have deployed scouts to watch an overseas defender, but a report has revealed that they aren’t the only club looking to bring him to the Premier League.

Which players are Liverpool linked with?

Over the summer, FSG and Jurgen Klopp signed four new midfielders in the form of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch, but having also sanctioned the sales of 11 players, there is still plenty of room in the squad for more future recruits.

The Reds have already been assessing their options in the market ahead of January and have most recently been linked with moves for Sao Paulo centre-back Lucas Beraldo, Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Pedro Neto and Borussia Dortmund forward Donyell Malen.

Feyenoord’s Quinten Timber is another player to have emerged as a target, and despite the central midfielder having only joined Arne Slot’s side from FC Utrecht last summer, he’s clearly impressed during his 41 appearances so far.

The Netherlands youth international still has another three years remaining on his contract in Rotterdam, but if the following update is to be believed, this hasn’t stopped chiefs from wanting to bring the 22-year-old to Merseyside at the start of next year.

Are Liverpool signing Quinten Timber?

According to 90min's transfer update on Timber, Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United have all sent scouts to watch him in action this season, with the top-flight clubs filing "favourable reports" over their target.

Feyenoord's midfielder is also attracting significant interest from Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Monaco and Napoli overseas, with his performances having left a "lasting impression", particularly on the sides from the Premier League.

Feyenoord defender Quinten Timber.

Are Quinten Timber and Jurrien Timber related?

Yes, Quinten is indeed the twin brother of Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber, so if the former does make a big move in 2024 he will at least have a taste of what to expect from English football thanks to his sibling.

He is much stronger in the offensive aspect of his game having posted ten direct goal involvements (four goals, six assists) during his 41 appearances at Feyenoord, but even if the ball doesn’t always hit the back of the net, Timber's playstyle poses a constant “threat”, according to journalist Josh Bunting.

Timber's salary is currently £15k-per-week and he is sponsored by Adidas. He ranks in the 98th percentile for successful take-ons, which highlights his desire to dribble past his marker and take aim at the opposition’s goalkeeper, as he’s so far had 16 shots this season, which is the third-highest tally in his squad, as per Feyenoord's statistics.

Furthermore, Timber is a versatile operator having been deployed in eight different positions across the pitch since the start of his career, including four roles in the centre, two in defence and out wide on both flanks, so he could be a fantastic option for the boss to have in the building should any unexpected injuries occur.

Skipper Roderick ensures Gloucestershire flying start

ScorecardGareth Roderick posted a superb 87 not out as Gloucestershire beat Essex by four wickets in Bristol and register their second victory in three days in the Royal London Cup South Group.Ashar Zaidi top-scored with 82 as Essex raised a competitive 287 for 6 on a decent batting track after winning the toss. But Roderick produced a true captain’s innings, staging a match-winning sixth-wicket partnership of 79 in seven overs with the hard-hitting Ryan Higgins as Gloucestershire reached their target with 11 balls to spare.Playing only his fifth List-A game, Academy product George Hankins registered a second white-ball half century inside three days, producing some clean hitting to accrue seven boundaries in a crowd-pleasing innings of 77 from 98 balls.Although he dragged a wideish delivery from Ravi Bopara onto his stumps eight runs short of his highest score, he nevertheless provided Gloucestershire’s reply with solid foundations.Simon Harmer kept Essex in the hunt, accounting for danger-men Ian Cockbain and Jack Taylor with his off spin, but Gloucestershire held the upper hand while Roderick remained at large.Demonstrating a cool head, Gloucestershire’s captain combined deft placement with feverish running between the wickets to raise 50 from 55 balls before pressing the accelerator button. Higgins provided rich entertainment in a murderous innings of 47 from 29 balls, accruing three fours and three sixes to break Essex spirits.Openers Adam Wheater and Varun Chopra had earlier afforded the Eagles a flying start, taking advantage of some loose bowling to raise 74 in 12 overs. But Gloucestershire quickly redressed the balance, slow left armer Tom Smith pinning Wheater lbw with his first ball, and then taking a superb diving catch at mid-off to remove Tom Westley without scoring before inducing Dan Lawrence to loft a miscued drive to mid-on.When Chopra flashed hard at a wide delivery from Chris Liddle and was caught at point for 42 in the 17th over, Essex had lost four wickets in 33 balls and were teetering at 93 for 4.Charged with the task of rebuilding the innings, Bopara dominated stands of 47 and 57 with Ryan ten Doeschate and Zaidi for the fifth and sixth wickets respectively. Having grafted 50 from 70 balls, he chased a ball outside off stump and was caught behind to become Liddle’s third victim.Zaidi picked up the cudgels thereafter, striking seven fours and two sixes and adding 90 for the sixth wicket with Harmer to propel the visitors to a competitive total.
