Arsenal Preparing To Make Offer For "World-class" £75m Star

Arsenal are preparing to make a renewed offer for Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo, according to a recent report from London World.

What's the latest Arsenal transfer news?

West Ham United captain Declan Rice reportedly has his heart set on a move to the Emirates Stadium, with manager David Moyes now believed to be interested in a swap deal, with Emile Smith Rowe going in the opposite direction.

It is unclear whether the Gunners are interested in a deal of that nature, with other reports indicating that a transfer fee has almost been agreed for the signing of Rice, however, he is not Mikel Arteta's only midfield target.

TalkSport reporter Alex Crook "wouldn't rule out" a move for Caicedo, alongside the England international, and there are now reports that Arsenal have started to work on a proposal for the Brighton star.

According to a report from London World, the north London club are preparing to make a renewed offer for the Ecuadorian, having missed out on his signature in the January transfer window.

The Gunners are planning to make a bid similar to the £75m package that was rejected in the previous window, at which point Brighton were adamant about keeping the 21-year-old. However, they are now open to negotiations.

There is an agreement that the Seagulls will allow the youngster to leave if a substantial offer comes in, with Arsenal now planning to test the waters.

Do Arsenal need Rice and Caicedo?

It is questionable whether Arsenal need to sign both players in the upcoming window, as they have very similar attributes, both particularly specialising defensively, with Caicedo ranking highly for interceptions completed per 90 over the past year.

Rice has averaged slightly more interceptions during that timeframe, however, the Brighton star recorded 21 more tackles in the Premier League last season with a total of 100, which ranked him second in the top flight.

Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo.

Given their similar skillsets, it may be wise for Arteta to settle on one of the two, and there are indications that Caicedo could be an excellent addition, having been hailed as "world-class" and "incredible to watch" by members of the media.

A fee of £75m is a lot for a player who has only regularly played in the Premier League for one season, but the Ecuador international was among Brighton's best-performing players last term, and should be more than capable of making the step up.

Andhra lost three early wickets, but steadied to reach 99 for 3 in their chase of 233 at stumps against Goa in Dhanbad.Goa had overturned their 34-run deficit early in the day, but found themselves 60 for 3 in the 16th over. An 88-run stand between Snehal Kauthankar (65) and Darshan Misal (32) steadied Goa’s innings, before Kauthankar’s wicket brought three more in a short span as Goa fell from 148 for 3 to 156 for 7. This was before allrounder Saurabh Bandekar and medium-pacer Rituraj Singh (33) counter-attacked with an eighth-wicket stand of 71 that came off just 9.4 overs. Bandekar then dominated a 49-run stand for the ninth wicket that took 9.1 overs, before eventually falling for 75 to the part-time offspin of Andhra captain Hanuma Vihari (3-17). Goa folded for 276.Andhra lost three wickets for 36, before they put on a counter-attack of their own through an unbroken 63-run stand for the fourth wicket between DB Ravi Teja (35 off 46) and Ricky Bhui (32 off 44).Tripura captain Manisankar Murasingh and part-time medium-pacer Sanjay Majumder took four wickets each as Kerala folded for 193 to concede the first-innings lead in Cuttack.Kerala lost Bhavin Thakkar and Rohan Prem in the first two overs of the day. Mohammed Azharuddeen (41) and Jalaj Saxena (18) put on 50 for the third wicket, and Salman Nizar (25) put on 54 for the fifth with Sachin Baby (29), but the rest of the partnerships barely contributed and Kerala were soon reduced to 131 for 6. Murasingh, who had batted with his last three batsmen to add 89 on the first day, took Kerala’s last three wickets to secure a 20-run lead for Tripura. Tripura then reached 17 for no loss at stumps.Haryana made an improvement to their overnight run rate of 2.66 as they added 165 in 43 overs on day two, to finish with 402 in their first innings in Valsad. They then took three Himachal Pradesh wickets before stumps.Overnight batsman Guntashveer Singh’s maiden-century knock was cut short early in the day, when he was dismissed by Rishi Dhawan (3-138) for 120. Contributions from Rohit Sharma (50) and opener Shubham Rohilla (64) – who had retired hurt the previous day – added to useful knocks from the lower order to take Haryana past 400. Medium-pacer Kanwar Abhinay finished with career-best figures of 6 for 84.Himachal Pradesh lost 3 for 54 after an opening stand of 41, as they went into stumps on 101 for 3. Robin Bist (12*) and Sumeet Varma (3*) were at the crease. The second day at the Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai started poorly for Chhattisgarh, who lost Abhimanyu Chauhan for a duck before they had added to their overnight score of 8 for 0. But half-centuries from Manoj Singh (67) and Amandeep Khare (51) took them to 281, and a 56-run first-innings lead over Services. But it wasn’t straightforward. Right-arm fast bowler Diwesh Pathania struck regularly, causing Chhattisgarh to slip to 199 for 8, still 26 adrift of Services’ total. A 66-run ninth-wicket partnership between Manoj and Kant Singh took Chhattisgarh well into the lead. Pathania finished with 6 for 78.After limiting Hyderabad to 328, Jammu & Kashmir slumped to 156 for 7 by stumps on day two in Vadodara.Resuming on 234 for 3, Hyderabad lost both overnight batsmen, including centurion Tanmay Agarwal, for the addition of just 30 runs to the score. Kolla Sumanth and Mehdi Hasan then departed for ducks to leave Hyderabad at 266 for 7. The tail added some handy runs, though, to take Hyderabad past 300. Jammu & Kashmir captain Parvez Rasool finished with 4 for 63.But Jammu & Kashmir quickly slipped to 31 for 4. They closed on 156 for 7, with Ravi Kiran taking 4 for 31 to deliver a telling blow to their chances of taking a first-innings lead.

Sixers seal derby win after Thunder's batting slump

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsSydney Thunder made a sobering start to their defence of the Big Bash League title won last summer, well beaten by a focused Sydney Sixers on the opening night of the tournament at a sold-out Sydney Showgrounds. After the Thunder lost a ruinous 5 for 15 midway through their innings, the Sixers’ captain Moises Henriques combined with Daniel Hughes to drive the Sixers home.Captain in commandHenriques led the Sixers with plenty of panache on the night, shuffling his bowlers expertly and not being spooked by the crushing way the Thunder ended their Powerplay, racing to 64 for 1. Instead he used spin to shift the game’s momentum on a somewhat tacky surface, ensuring the hosts finished some way short of their desired total. He followed up with an innings of common sense and plenty of strength, taking a particular shine to the offerings of his state team-mate, Pat Cummins. As plenty of batsmen the world over can relate, muscling Cummins is no easy task. Henriques’ reward was the top score of the match, and a winning start to the Sixers’ campaign.Bat in blackA technicolour crowd of 21,798 was in good voice throughout, but there were more than a few gasps when Andre Russell walked out brandishing a jet-black bat – a sight not seen since the little-remembered Stanford T20 tournaments in the Caribbean. While the Sixers’ gloveman Haddin noted on the broadcast that the ball bore a few black marks for Russell’s contact, a CA spokesperson confirmed it was all above board.”A player can use a coloured bat subject to CA approval. The bat may be the same colour as the Club’s primary colour, or black. CA retains the right to withdraw approval in its absolute discretion. The umpires can also request a player change the bat if they believe it affects the integrity of the match.”Spin shiftWhen the fifth and sixth overs of the Thunder innings – bowled by Joe Mennie and Doug Bollinger – went for a combined 39 runs, the Sixers seemed to have lost their early control over proceedings. However Henriques refused to panic, instead reverting to Steve O’Keefe’s spin and the slinging action of Sean Abbott. The next two overs cost only seven, and meant Eoin Morgan was spoiling for a boundary when the new Australian citizen Johan Botha entered the attack. First ball and a slow, spinning off break attracted the faintest of touches from Morgan through to Brad Haddin. That wicket led to another tight over, this time costing only three, and Henriques then swung Mennie back into action against batsmen now questioning themselves a fraction. Jason Roy flew through the air at backward point to snaffle a cut shot from the captain Ben Rohrer, a critical wicket given there is no longer a Michael Hussey or Jacques Kallis adding their knowhow to the Thunder line-up. Two balls later Jake Doran also fell, this time lbw, pushing momentum well and truly towards the Sixers. When Russell’s black-bat cameo was ended by a Bollinger short ball, Henriques pulled another clever rein by posting Daniel Hughes at slip for Chris Green, who obliged by edging directly to him. In all the sequence had cost the Thunder 5 for 15 in 23 balls, a period that was always going to leave them within range of the Sixers’ power-hitters.Hunter and huntedFor the first four years of the BBL, the Sixers were Sydney’s dominant team, the Thunder their underachieving western counterparts. Last season turned things on their head, as the Thunder soared to the title while the Sixers did not even reach the semis. An off-season to think about that scenario clearly left an impression on the Sixers, who have stolen an early march, not only their crosstown rivals, but also the competition as a whole.

Aston Villa “Pushing” To Sign £63k p/w Defender

Aston Villa are believed to be pushing to bring Pau Torres to Villa Park this summer and reunite him with his former manager, Unai Emery.

How old is Pau Torres?

Villa enjoyed a seriously impressive 2022/23 campaign which saw them end the season in style by pipping European-regulars Tottenham Hotspur to seventh spot.

In doing so, Emery's men have secured the opportunity to play European football next season after securing their spot in the Europa Conference League qualifiers.

However, it does not look as if Villa are willing to sit back and settle on what they done in the 22/23 campaign.

Indeed, reports would suggest the Villa owners are looking to take advantage of their European status by potentially bringing in some significant additions.

And one name which is seemingly on their radar is the 26-year-old Torres who has previously played under Villa's Spanish boss.

Torres has made 105 appearances under Emery from their time together at Villarreal and he has even been able to provide an impressive return of 10 goals and three assists (via Transfermarkt).

Speaking on his Here We Go podcast, Fabrizio Romano has claimed the Premier League side are now pushing to bring the Spaniard to Villa Park this summer:

"They [Tottenham] always appreciated Pau Torres, but at the moment it is Aston Villa, the club pushing for Pau."

How much does Pau Torres earn?

Villa are not the only Premier League side who are being linked with a potential move this summer for the Spaniard.

Indeed, it is believed Spurs are looking at the 26-year-old as a potential option for this summer as they look to address their own defensive issues.

However, it will be intriguing to see whether the north London side could hold a candle to Villa's proposal – at least on personal terms.

Villa have European football on the menu for next season, a manager who Torres his strived under and potentially even a more promising project.

Even financially, Villa are no small fry when it comes to the transfer window with Villa showing last summer they were willing to spend significantly on centre-back Diego Carlos.

But it does not appear the £63k-per-week is only garnering interest from England with reports from Spain (via SportWitness) suggesting Juventus are also keen on the 26-year-old.

Whether Villa could beat the likes of the Italian giants to the potential signing of Torres may be another question.

However, they certainly seem to be in a good place to launch an attractive bid for the 26-year-old.

Root 'ready to captain' but Cook won't make hasty decision

Joe Root is “ready to captain England” according to Alastair Cook but the current skipper will take time to assess his future after the India series is finished

George Dobell12-Dec-20160:38

‘Root is a clued-on guy’ – Cook

Joe Root is “ready to captain England” according to Alastair Cook. While Cook maintained that his views on continuing as captain “have not changed” – he has long said that he will continue on a series by series basis and make a firm decision only after consulting the managing director of the England team, Andrew Strauss – he did hint he was asking himself “some questions” over his future.”I think Joe Root is ready to captain England,” Cook said following England’s innings-and-36-run defeat in Mumbai which handed India the series. “He is ready because he is a clued-up guy and he has the respect of everyone in the changing room.”You never know until you actually experience it and everything that comes with the England captaincy. You are thrown in at the deep end and you kind of sink or swim. Nothing can prepare you for it. He has not got much captaincy experience but that does not mean everything.”While it is true that Root, the current vice-captain, has little captaincy experience – he has been captain for just four first-class games – that could equally be used as a reason to elevate him sooner rather than later.England play two Test series in the English summer of 2017 – one against South Africa and one against West Indies – and, if there is any doubt over whether Cook will continue as captain until the Ashes at the end of the year, there is bound to be a temptation to provide Root with the maximum amount of experience possible and make the change before the South Africa series. There is already much required of him, though. He is, arguably, England’s key batsman in all three formats and, in the next few weeks, he will become a father for the first time. With the demands of England schedule, it may be that Cook and Strauss are reluctant to overload him.Either way, Cook has some time to reflect on his position. As he is no longer a member of the England limited-overs teams, he has no international commitments until July after the Chennai Test finishes next week and while he has sounded increasingly jaded with some aspects of life on the road in recent weeks, he retains great pride in the leadership role.”The comments I made at start of series have not changed,” Cook said. “It sticks true to end of this series. I will sit down with Straussy at the end of the year like we have made the pact to do to talk honestly and openly about stuff. My position has not changed and wouldn’t have done had we won this game or lost this game.”Of course you have questions. Naturally you look at stuff. Clearly it is a hard place to tour, certainly with the balance of our squad in terms of where our strengths lie, the sub-continent is going to be a harder place to tour than somewhere like South Africa.”But being captain of England is a huge honour, a huge privilege. You are at the forefront of the team and it comes onto your shoulders when you win or lose. In the heat of the battle you make those decisions. You go to bed at night and you have to live with making good or bad decisions. As a bloke to be asked to lead your country is a huge honour personally.”

West Ham Eye ‘Dangerous’ £30m Star; He’s Clear Of Scamacca

Gianluca Scamacca’s move to West Ham has unravelled into disaster.

The Italian was signed from Sassuolo to become the Irons’ main man, but he has been spectacularly disappointing, unable to take the goal-scoring burden off Michail Antonio.

Danny Ings was also bought in January in an attempt to cover up the Scamacca mistake, however, the Englishman has also struggled to find form in East London.

This situation has left David Moyes in the hunt for a new striker and the club has been linked with Armando Broja.

What’s the latest on Armando Broja to Chelsea?

According to Romagiallorossa.it, Roma are closing on a loan with an obligation to buy deal for Scamacca, a move that would provide space for West Ham to enquire about the Chelsea man.

Indeed, it's alleged that the Hammers are supposedly “closing” in on the 21-year-old, who last year had an asking price of around £30m.

Can Armando Broja replace Gianluca Scamacca?

Broja is a player brimming with talent, effervescence, and potential, but has suffered hideous luck with injury.

The £40k-per-week striker has been restricted to just three starts for the Blues this season after he tore his cruciate ligament in a friendly against Aston Villa in December 2022.

Although, admittedly prior to this unfortunate event, Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter were both reluctant to regularly utilise the forward. Nevertheless, he has shown in a previous loan spell his extraordinary talent.

During the 2020/21 season, the youngster was at Southampton, where has displayed the most promise in his short career, as in 38 appearances in all competitions, the Chelsea starlet scored nine times.

Frank Lampard, who gave Broja his full debut back in 2020, once said: “He is a very talented young boy.

“He came into us at the start of the Covid times, trained with us, and showed the attributes that I think you’re seeing now in the Premier League at Southampton.

“He’s fast, strong, has a real eye for goal and he’s a very, very good young player so I’m very aware of his strengths.”

Gianluca Scamacca

Meanwhile, Scamacca has failed to hit the heights he had previously shown in his homeland. After netting 16 Serie goals in the 2020/21 season, he has only registered three Premier League strikes, failing to score since January 4th.

Moyes provided a rather damning indictment on Scamacca and said: "We know that his physical data has got to be much better than it is. Gianluca has got to get himself back.

“You want to put out the players who you think are going to win for you, so you are always looking to put your best team out. We just want the output to be bigger and more.”

Therefore, this has opened the pathway for Broja, who has already shown he can consistently perform at the top level.

Described as “dangerous” by Ralph Hasenhuttl, the 17-cap international is a more than adequate replacement for the out-of-favour Scamacca.

Yasir suffers low-grade hamstring strain

A low-grade hamstring strain limited Yasir Shah’s bowling on the second day of the SCG Test

Osman Samiuddin in Sydney04-Jan-20174:51

Samiuddin: The management don’t seem to be convinced of Yasir’s injury

Yasir Shah’s difficult tour of Australia continued on the second day of the final Test in Sydney when he picked up a low-grade hamstring strain in his left leg.Yasir struggled through the warm-ups in the morning. He did come out to field, though his movements were limited and he seemed restricted in his ability to throw the ball back in from the outfield. But within the first hour, he came on to bowl a ten-over spell that took him through to lunch, after which he did not appear. Pakistan appeared to be confused about the problem, thinking him well enough to go on the field and bowl in that session before allowing him to stay back post-lunch. Only later in the day was it confirmed that he is suffering from a hamstring strain.”He is telling us he has got some pain in his hamstring which he did when he chased the ball towards the boundary yesterday,” Mickey Arthur, the Pakistan coach, said. “Our physios have worked probably a whole day with him.”We tried to get through the morning session with him and he did it, and he did admirably and he carried on and he got through the session. Had a lot of treatment again during lunchtime and then just could not get through. So instead of having him on the field at 50% we left him off and Azhar [Ali] again stood up and did a great job.”Arthur said Yasir would be able to bowl again if required at some stage of the match. Yasir has bowled 134.1 overs in the series so far, a heavy workload on a bowler who is among the most overworked bowlers in the world since his debut two years ago.Pakistan’s other bowlers have also looked tired in this Test – not least Mohammad Amir – a result of what has been an unusually busy Test year for them.”The guys are pretty tired, they really are,” Arthur said. “Amir… he keeps going you know. Over the last six months or so we have played massive amount of cricket and he just keeps going and keeps going, even though he has taken a lot of niggles, and he hasn’t shirked his responsibilities and he keeps running for us. They are not in good shape but they have kept going.”

Ngidi revels in 'unreal' debut

When Lungi Ngidi was 18 years old and in his first season as a professional cricketer, he was part of a Titans’ T20 team that played in the final of the franchise competition. He only bowled one over in the match but removed the opposition’s most high-profile batsman: Kevin Pietersen, who top-edged a pull.At 19, with a bit more experience under his belt, Ngidi was in the franchise final again. He was considered good enough to bowl a full complement of four overs and, conceding just 27 runs, he got rid of the two best batsmen from the opposition: Colin Ingram and Colin Ackermann. It was with these experiences that Ngidi, now 20, took the new ball for South Africa in Friday’s T20 against Sri Lanka. “I’ve played in a few finals so I have been under pressure quite a few times already and that’s one of the things that gave me an advantage,” he explained afterwards.”Having been under pressure situations before, I knew opening the bowling for your country is not really a joke. It’s quite a serious matter. I tried to focus on the methods that’s worked for me and that’s just to stay in the moment. There’s nothing you can really do other than deliver the balls one at a time and from there see what happens. The first over, I wanted to get my line and length right and I wasn’t as nervous as I thought I would have been.” Still, his first over cost nine runs and was taken out of the attack.Sri Lanka needed 40 off 18 balls with seven wickets in hand in a 10-over shootout when Ngidi was brought back, and having seen his team-mates making crucial incisions, he wanted to step up too.”After the first over I saw that there was a bit of bounce and it was skidding through. I tried to beat the batsmen for pace,” Ngidi said. “Coming back in the eighth over, I knew if I hit the deck hard at back of a length, I could try and nick the batsman off or get him caught.”Lungi Ngidi took two wickets in four balls in his first match of international cricket•Associated Press

The plan worked perfectly. Seekkuge Prasanna swung at a back of a length ball, got a top edge that wicketkeeper Mangaliso Mosehle gobbled up and Kusal Mendis pulled a short one to deep square leg, where Heino Kuhn took the catch and then, wary of how close he was to the rope, popped the ball over to Imran Tahir.”I thought Heino had taken the catch and was going to do a victory lap but then I saw him punt the ball up so my heart jumped because I didn’t know which way it was going,” Ngidi said. “But I was very happy. The skill levels are up there.”Ngidi finished with figures of 2-0-12-2. He was the only South African bowler with an economy rate under 11, for which he earned the Man-of-the-Match award on his home ground and more fans than he has ever had before. “I have never heard people scream my name. It really was amazing for me. I have been working hard to get where I am and for the fans to acknowledge and support me like that, it was unreal for me.”I actually got a bit emotional so I just had to take a moment to myself there and focus on the game again. It’s a bit overwhelming because I have never had that many people ask for my autograph or to take pictures. Usually it’s the odd one or two but now there’s even more”Titans’ coach Mark Boucher has identified Ngidi as Kagiso Rabada-like because of his pace – around 140 kph – his clever use of the bouncer and his cool head. South Africa’s selectors seem to have the same idea and for Ngidi, the dream is coming true.

Tottenham Eyeing Their Own "World-Class" £50m Bruno Fernandes

Tottenham Hotspur are a side crying out for some final-third firepower given how reliant they became on Harry Kane last season.

His 30-goal haul was nothing short of spectacular, as despite all the turmoil surrounding the club, he continued to find the net with regularity.

It was a shame the same could not be said for his counterparts as Heung-min Son, Dejan Kulusevksi and Richarlison all posted less-than-favourable numbers beside him.

The usually-reliable South Korean would score just ten league goals, whilst the Sweden international saw his goal contributions drop from 13 in the half-season prior to just nine. Then, the latter – the £60m club-record summer signing – mustered just one league goal all season, much to the amusement of his rivals.

Admittedly, there was little creativity to in turn supplement them.

Therefore, to bolster both their goalscoring and the supply to these forwards, the acquisition of James Maddison remains a must.

Having submitted an embarrassing £50m bid for both him and Harvey Barnes just yesterday, whilst new boss Ange Postecoglou will seek to secure a bargain, this is a move that reeks of Daniel Levy's frugality.

For once he must abandon the notion that a bargain must always be attained, and instead reach deep into his pocket to at the very least secure the attacking midfielder before Newcastle United translate their interest into a more sizable bid, closer to Leicester City's £50m valuation for just him.

After all, the 26-year-old maestro could be the missing offensive piece that this toothless side has been craving.

Is James Maddison similar to Bruno Fernandes?

During a troublesome period at Manchester United, similar to the situation Spurs find themselves in, Ole Gunnar Solksjaer took to the continent to find his solution. What came up was a £47m move for a Portuguese talent who had been tearing it up in his home country.

Few could have predicted Bruno Fernandes would have such an instrumental and immediate impact as he did.

In a weak side that struggled for goals, the 28-year-old would score eight times and assist a further seven in his debut half-season in the league, before notching 45 goal contributions during his first full term in Manchester.

This ability to take a weak team on his back is what draws similarities with Maddison, as well as FBref noting the Portugal international in his similar players model.

For the struggling Foxes this season, who would eventually succumb to relegation, the England international posted ten goals and nine assists, as a consistent shining star in an otherwise dreary outfit.

bruno-fernandes-manchester-united

Such early-season form even led pundit and former manager Dean Saunders to suggest he was part of his nation's "world-class" pool of talent in the run-up to the World Cup.`

With quick feet and the immeasurable confidence to try his luck from anywhere, this silky maestro has all the attributes to emulate the success of Fernandes, but within a new regime that hopes to not remain solely reliant on one man like they currently are with Kane, or United once were when the £240k-per-week star first signed.
