Leeds Could Unearth New Mason Mount In Teen ‘Dream’

Leeds United's mission to return to the Premier League was a drawn-out process, but one made all the sweeter when Marcelo Bielsa eventually did guide them back to the big time.

Having overseen 16 years of hurt, the Whites dusted themselves off from despair to dominate the Championship, and they will seek to do so again at the first time of asking next term.

In that tangled story of promotion, the campaign prior to winning the league they oversaw one of the most painful processes as they lost in the playoff semi-final to Derby County.

Having been embroiled in huge 'spygate' controversy earlier in the year, Frank Lampard led his youthful team from two goals down to set up the final with Aston Villa. The Yorkshire outfit would have to suffer one more year of second-division football.

One of the stars that night, and admittedly that season, was the on-loan midfielder Mason Mount.

Having used his connections with Chelsea to tempt some of their top youth talents on a temporary basis, Lampard's squad was stacked with players pushing for a place in the top flight.

mason-mount-derby-county

The 24-year-old was handed the platform for his future successes in the Championship, and given they have now returned, Leeds could look to do the same but with one of their own academy stars; Charlie Allen.

Who is Charlie Allen?

Having moved from Northern Ireland at a young age, the 19-year-old offers one of the most creative presences from within that engine room for the Premier League 2 side.

In fact, with two goals and six assists across all competitions this season, his exploits have spearheaded their promotion into Division 1 of the league, as a willing runner and versatile star, much like Mount.

Jim Magilton, the elite performance director for the Irish Football Association, even noted:

"Charlie is one of those boys that you throw him on to the park and go and ask him to play. [He’ll] play anywhere with the same attitude and enthusiasm. Technically very good and physically can handle it – he is quick enough and he has a real chance."

Patrick Van Dort, deputy sports editor for JPIMedia in Northern Ireland, supplemented these claims: "People say he's a dream to coach, a good listener and ticks the boxes you'd expect of someone so highly rated."

Such an ability to sacrifice himself for the side, selfless if it results in the betterment of the squad, is akin to Mount nowadays, who has since played 195 games for Chelsea and even assisted in their Champions League final win. He has played as part of a double pivot, at eight or on the wings, just like Allen this season.

However, his career was forged in the Championship, as he scored 11 goals and recorded six assists across all competitions that year when they narrowly missed out on promotion.

Perhaps Allen could seek to find his own springboard, should he be handed the opportunity, to kickstart a career similar to the England international at Elland Road.

Leeds Eye Up 46-Year-Old As "Serious" Managerial Candidate

Leeds United reportedly see Daniel Farke as a "serious" candidate to take charge at Elland Road this summer, according to a fresh claim.

Who is favourite to take Leeds job?

The search to be the next Whites boss is ongoing currently, with the club working diligently to ensure that the correct appointment is made this time around.

It could be argued that all three of Jesse Marsch, Javi Gracia and Sam Allardyce were the wrong choices to sit in the Elland Road hot seat, and it has ultimately led to Leeds being relegated from the Premier League.

Since Allardyce's recent departure, endless names have been linked with the vacant Whites job, with Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard arguably at the front of the queue, along with the likes of Brendan Rodgers, Carlos Corberan and Scott Parker, to name a few.

Farke is also a name that has recently been thrown into the hat, however, with journalist Phil Hay name-checking Leeds' interest in him on Saturday, and a new update further suggests that their interest is genuine.

Could Farke be the next Whites manager?

According to Sport1, Farke is a "serious" option to become the Whites' new boss, with "loose" talks being held over a move to Elland Road, having parted ways with Borussia Monchengladbach recently.

The takeover of Leeds by 49ers Enterprises has happened at the same time, suggesting they see Farke as more of a strong appointment that the previous owners, although the timing could simply be coincidence.

The former Norwich City manager could be a really shrewd choice as manager by the Whites, considering he has guided the Canaries to two title-winning seasons in the Championship in the past, showing that he is an expert at getting out of arguably one of the most competitive leagues in Europe.

It is imperative that Leeds make a fast return to the Premier League and don't allow years of good work to completely go to waste in no time at all, and Farke is a strong choice for that reason, compared to the likes of Gerrard and Corberan, who haven't achieved as much to date.

It feels like one of the most pivotal summers at Leeds in many years, in terms of picking the right manager and making key signings to take the team forward – in the 46-year-old Farke, the Whites have a reliable choice who could jump at the chance to return to English football.

Wolves In Race To Land Prolific £17m Marksman

An update has emerged on Wolverhampton Wanderers and their plans to improve their attacking options in the summer transfer window…

What's the latest on Viktor Gyokeres to Wolves?

According to the printed edition of the Portuguese outlet Record, via Sport Witness, Wolves are in the race to land Coventry City centre-forward Viktor Gyokeres, as Julen Lopetegui eyes a new number nine.

The report claims that Liga Portugal outfit Sporting are also interested in a deal for the attacker but will struggle to complete a swoop due to the Championship side valuing him at more than €20m (£17m).

Fellow Premier League side Burnley, who have been promoted to the top-flight heading into next season, are also providing competition for his signature and Record states that both Wolves and the Clarets have more financial power than Sporting.

Would Viktor Gyokeres be a good signing for Wolves?

The Sweden international could be an excellent addition to Lopetegui's squad as the striker enjoyed a terrific campaign with Coventry in the second tier and could strike up an exciting partnership with Pedro Neto.

Wolves winger Pedro Neto.

In the Championship, Gyokeres averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.97 across 46 appearances and contributed with 21 goals and ten assists from a number nine position.

The Swedish dynamo is exceptional in front of goal and rarely wastes opportunities to find the back of the net as his 21 goals in the division came from just 16.7 xG, which suggests that he would thrive off quality service for Wolves.

This is where Neto comes into the equation as the Portuguese winger has been let down by his teammates' lack of clinical finishing in recent seasons.

Since the start of 2020/21, the attacker has created 9.72 xA in the Premier League for his fellow forwards and has only been rewarded with seven assists, whereas Gyokeres is a player who has the quality to outscore the quality of chances that come his way and could make the most of the 23-year-old's creativity.

The Coventry star, who was once hailed as “unplayable” by former teammate Maxime Biamou, is also a creator himself and produced 10.87 xA in the Championship for Coventry in 22/23.

This suggests that the Swedish marksman could open up opposition defences to set up Neto, who has scored nine Premier League goals for Wolves, with chances to score.

Therefore, the pair could be an exciting duo in the final third for Lopetegui as they could provide each other with the opportunities they need to find the back of the net and punish teams in the top flight.

Spurs Have Eyes On Deal For £100k p/w Midfield "Machine"

Tottenham Hotspur are a side who have been mentioned in the expected pursuit to sign James Ward-Prowse this summer following Southampton's relegation.

How much is Ward-Prowse worth?

It was a season to forget for both Spurs and the Saints with both hugely underwhelming their fanbases, however, Southampton's will provide bigger consequences.

The Saints ended the campaign rock bottom of the Premier League table and, therefore, will play second-tier football next season and likely lose some of their star players.

Although Spurs will have to go into the new campaign without any European football to look forward to, it will provide Ange Postecoglou with an opportunity to instil his philosophy at the club.

And it will be intriguing to see what changes he brings over the coming months in the transfer window as he will likely be keen to stamp his influence on the starting XI.

One player who is expected to bring in big money for the south coast side is the Englishman, Ward-Prowse, with reports (via SportBible) suggesting the Saints will be looking for a bid in the region of £52m for his services.

Whether or not a team will be willing to part with that sum of money for him is another question, though.

However, it is apparent he will have a lot of potential suitors as insider Alex Crook explained when speaking about the 28-year-old on TalkSPORT:

"Newcastle have got him on their list, as I understand it. I don't believe he's at the top of that list. And again, Southampton I think are asking for quite a substantial fee.

"Tottenham have been mentioned as well and you could see him improving their midfield. Wolves would like to sign him, as I understand it, but they think he might go to a club higher up the food chain."

How much does Ward-Prowse earn?

The £100k-per-week England international has played a huge role in Southampton's side for a number of years now having started every single game in the Premier League this season (via Transfermarkt).

And during his time on the south coast, Ward-Prowse has established himself as one of the league's most fierce free-kick takers.

But it is not just free-kicks in which he scores with the 28-year-old chipping in a total of nine goals in the Premier League alone this season (via Transfermarkt).

Upon his arrival at Celtic, Postecoglou made some major changes in the Bhoys' midfield with the additions of Reo Hatate and Matt O'Riley.

So it will be interesting to see if he also looks to do similar at Spurs when he has the chance to assess his options of Rodrigo Bentancur, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Yves Bissouma and Oliver Skipp.

However, if the Saints are holding out for in excess of £50m this summer, then perhaps this is a deal which Spurs may have to forget about considering they are reportedly in talks to sign the £60m-rated James Maddison.

But this is a player who has been hailed as a "machine" by some in the media despite the struggles Southampton endured over the course of the 2022/23 campaign.

Malan, Nafees heroics help Barisal chase down 164

Dawid Malan and Shahriar Nafees gave Barisal Bulls a big win after Chittagong Vikings failed to capitalise on a good start from Tamim Iqbal

Fifties from Dawid Malan and Shahriar Nafees helped Barisal Bulls chase down 164 with five balls to spare against Chittagong Vikings. The pair added 150 runs for the second wicket to ease a chase that looked tense at one stage.Malan was unbeaten on 78 off 48 balls with three fours and seven sixes, most of them hit high into the stands beyond the midwicket boundary. Nafees made a 59-ball 65 that had seven fours and a six, but his dismissal, followed by Thisara Perera’s wicket in the penultimate over gave Chittagong a hint of a chance before Mushfiqur Rahim finished the win with two boundaries in the last over.Malan and Nafees came together in the second over when Josh Cobb was undone by Subashis Roy’s slower delivery for six. But the pace bowler dropped Malan on 8 off his own bowling in the sixth over. The pair batted well together, feeding each other the strike when one of the batsmen found boundaries frequently. They got into the groove after the Powerplay but after the 13th over, the asking rate kept rising and Barisal went into the last three overs needing 34. Malan took pressure off the side and turned the match for them with three successive sixes off Dwayne Smith in the 18th over. Mushfiqur meanwhile, reached a milestone during his last-over heroics, becoming the first batsman to score more than 1,000 runs in the BPL.Earlier when Chittagong batted first, Tamim Iqbal began with a lofted drive over cover in the third over before his trademark cuts, pulls, flicks and charge at bowlers brought him nine more fours and two sixes. He brought up his highest score in the BPL with his 75, moving past the 69 he scored in 2015. He fell to a slower ball from Kamrul Islam Rabbi in the 14th over after sharing 116 runs for the opening partnership. Jahurul, who fell in the following over, made 36 with four boundaries.Tamim and Jahurul’s partnership came at 8.92 per over, which was also the first 100-plus opening partnership in this season. Chittagong, however, could not cash in on the base – they only added 47 runs in the remaining 6.5 overs, when Anamul Haque and Dwayne Smith conjured two fours and two sixes.

Khulna Titans survive late Prasanna blitz

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsDwayne Bravo picked up two wickets but fell at a crucial juncture of Dhaka Dynamites’ chase for 4•BCB

Khulna Titans survived Seekkuge Prasanna’s six-hitting spree to beat Dhaka Dynamites by nine runs in Chittagong. Khulna moved to eight points and joined Rangpur Riders and Dhaka at the top of the table.Dhaka would have rued the five dropped catches in the field that made the difference although Prasanna nearly took the side to an improbable victory from a score of 83 for 7 in the 14th over. At that stage, the side had lost in-form batsman Mosaddek Hossain. With Dhaka needing another 75 runs, Prasanna started by smacking Mosharraf Hossain high over long-on in the 14th over, before hitting three more off Kevon Cooper in the 16th over. He struck Shafiul for another six over long-off before Mosharraf was hammered for two successive sixes at the start of the 18th over.Though Sunzamul Islam fell in the same over, Dhaka were still in the game with 15 needed off the last two overs. Prasanna, who had reached 50 off 18 balls, was dropped by Andre Fletcher in the penultimate over before Suhrawardi Shuvo was the ninth batsman dismissed. With ten needed off the final over, Prasanna struck the first ball down Ariful Haque’s throat at long-off, ending the drama that he had helped created. He was dismissed for 53 off 22 balls, including seven sixes.Dhaka’s start to the chase had been poor after both in-form openers, Mehedi Maruf and Kumar Sangakkara, fell within 2.1 overs. Nasir Hossain was caught at short third-man through a late cut off Cooper, while Matt Coles failed to do justice to his promotion to No 3, falling for 11 in the sixth over.Shakib Al Hasan made just 8 while Dwayne Bravo holed out at deep extra cover attempting an inside-out hit off left-arm spinner Taibur Rahman, having made 4. Mosaddek, who made 35 off 28 balls, tried to keep Dhaka abreast with the required run rate, striking two sixes off Shuvagata Hom in the eighth over and two fours off Ariful Haque in the ninth over. In his quest for quick runs, however, Mosaddek was caught at long-on in the 14th over. When Khulna batted first after winning the toss, they took advantage of Dhaka’s poor catching to post a competitive 157 for 5. Fletcher was dropped twice during his 16-ball 20, both times at long-on by Mosaddek Hossain and Nasir Hossain on 2 and 9 respectively, although Nasir’s was a tougher chance. Then, Mosaddek, at point, and Sunzamul Islam, at deep midwicket, dropped simple chances offered by Mahmudullah on 34 and 36 respectively. Matt Coles also dropped a straight-forward chance at long-off in the final over, off Kevon Cooper’s drive. Mahmudullah went on to top score with 62 off 46 balls with the help of four sixes.

Leeds Could Bin Ayling For ‘Duracell Bunny’

Leeds United are a huge club, that many would agree should be in the Premier League. However, nothing in this sport is a given, and status must be earned no matter how prestigious an establishment may be.

However, it is this size that retains their immense pull, as players will still want to move to Elland Road knowing that being their promotion hero would see them become an instant fan favourite.

Therefore, this could suggest that the Whites are in for a big summer of vast revolution, and yet some of the key components of a Championship-winning team already remain in Yorkshire too.

Whilst plenty of the squad will likely seek an exit, their academy is instead laden with all the talent needed to maintain their levels on a much smaller budget.

In fact, returning from one hugely successful loan spell is youngster Cody Drameh, fresh from his playoff-winning exploits at Luton Town.

Despite being just 21 years old, his promotion expertise could prove invaluable in ensuring the Whites can achieve a similar feat.

How good is Cody Drameh?

In unleashing this youngster into the first team now, it would surely finally mark the exit of Luke Ayling from the first team.

The 31-year-old has been consistently poor for years now, having looked hopelessly out of his depth in the top flight. A 6.61 average Sofascore rating for the 2021/22 term was somehow worsened in the most recent campaign, with his 69% pass accuracy showcasing a defender stuck in the dark ages.

Meanwhile, in the league below, Drameh had been shining for the Hatters, recording a 7.09 average rating. His key attributes all suggest him to be the future of this club, as the perfect modern-day full-back who boasted 1.6 key passes, 3.1 tackles and 2.1 clearances per game, via Sofascore.

This technical proficiency combined with the relentless energy his youth provides further pronounces him as the outstanding option, with his former boss Steve Morison suggesting: "He is like a Duracell Bunny, isn't he? He just keeps going and going."

luke-ayling-leeds

To compare that with the lazy exploits of Ayling, who allowed Harry Kane to ghost in unmarked for his first on their final-day thrashing to Tottenham Hotspur and went viral for his lack of effort in preventing a goal against Bournemouth. Indeed, they are worlds apart.

Whilst reports have been linking their bright young superstar with a move away, Andrea Radrizzani would do well to keep ahold of Drameh, knowing that his new boss would surely want to put him in the side.

With quality, energy, youth and fresh experience at demolishing the Championship all on his side, at last, Ayling can be ditched now a viable alternative has arrived.

Darren Bravo's poor performances did not merit higher contract – Cameron

WICB president Dave Cameron has said Darren Bravo was offered a Grade-C contract because his “poor” recent performances did not merit a higher pay grade

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Nov-2016WICB president Dave Cameron has said Darren Bravo was offered a Grade-C contract because his “poor” recent performances did not merit a higher pay grade. Cameron also revealed that of the 15 players who were recently offered WICB contracts till September 2017, only Kraigg Brathwaite and Marlon Samuels had received contracts higher than the C category. Along with Bravo, Carlos Brathwaite and Samuels, who was given a Grade-B contract, had declined the board’s offer. This is the first time that the WICB offered an explanation of the contract Bravo was offered. “It is explicit that if your averages are not above a certain level it tells you what contracts you get. It is very, very explicit,” Cameron told , a Caribbean television network. “His averages in the last two years have been declining, so what do you do? Reward poor performance or do you encourage him to get better?”Bravo is one of the most experienced players in the West Indies Test squad and when Cameron asked if it was demotivating for the batsman to be offered a low contract, he said: “If you continue to keep giving him an A contract then what is the motivation to get better? He has been on an A contract and he hasn’t done well.”Bravo responded with a tweet saying he had never been offered a Grade-A contract. “You hav been failing 4 d last 4yrs. Y don’t u resign and FYI I’ve neva been given an A contract. Big idiot @davec51,” he said on Twitter.Bravo, 27, was West Indies’ second-highest run getter in the recently concluded Test series against Pakistan in the UAE. Before that, he had a poor Test series against India at home, scoring only 139 runs in seven innings. Since November 2014, Bravo scored 1089 runs in 17 Tests for West Indies, a tally that is second to Kraigg Brathwaite’s 1258 runs in 20 matches. Bravo scored two centuries and seven fifties in this period, and was also the second-highest run getter for the side in away Tests in this period, with 391 runs at an average of 43.44. Bravo’s overall batting average in overseas Tests is 51.18.The WICB retainers comprise five categories – A+, A, B+, B and C – and the eventual grades are based on a points system used for players. These points are calculated by an appraisal formula that compares the player’s performance over the last 12 months to his overall career figures. In 2015, Bravo scored 644 runs in nine Tests at an average of 35.77, with his best performances coming overseas. In Sri Lanka, he scored two half-centuries from four innings before racking up 247 runs in five innings at 49.4 in Australia. In, Bravo aggregated 300 runs in five matches at an average of 37.50.Cameron did not provide the specifics of how many points Bravo had scored. “Every single player got C contract except Kraigg Brathwaite and Marlon Samuels,” he said.

Sunderland: Mowbray Can Replace Roberts With 20 y/o Gem at Stadium of Light

Sunderland enjoyed an impressive return to life in the Championship in the 2022/23 campaign as they battled early disruption to reach the play-offs.

Alex Neil quit the Stadium of Light to join Stoke City in the first month of the season and Tony Mowbray came in to lead the Black Cats to sixth before losing to Luton Town, who went on earn promotion to the Premier League.

The head coach and Kristjaan Speakman now have the summer transfer window to bolster the squad again with the aim of going all the way and moving up to the top-flight at the end of 2023/24.

One player the club have been linked with a swoop for ahead of next term is Universidad Católica prospect Alexander Aravena, who could be the dream heir to a current Sunderland ace.

How would Alexander Aravena fit in at Sunderland?

The 20-year-old right winger could come in and eventually replace Patrick Roberts on that side of Mowbray's attacking line-up next season or in the years to come.

Sunderland winger Patrick Roberts.

In the Primera Division in 2023, the exciting youngster has averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.08 and chipped in with seven goals and two assists from out wide in 13 outings. The number 18 has created one chance per game for his teammates and showcased his ability to open up the opposition for his fellow attackers.

His form this year comes after an impressive 2022 in the top-flight of football in Chile.

Aravena averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.98 in the league last term and contributed at the top end of the pitch with 11 goals and three assists in 30 matches as a winger.

These statistics show that the young ace, whose intelligence was once praised as "magnificent" by press officer and scout Salvatore Gandhi, has the quality to be a big goal threat, whilst also being able to provide creativity, as a right winger.

Roberts, meanwhile, averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.83 and racked up five goals and seven assists in 42 appearances in the Championship in the season just gone.

This suggests that the Chile international could provide more than him in front of goal if the 20-year-old is able to adjust to English football, based on his return of 18 goals and five assists in his last 43 league games is more impressive than the Englishman's statistics in the second tier.

Aravena's age, however, means that Mowbray would not have to rush him into the starting XI or expect him to hit the ground running on Wearside. Sunderland could take their time with the prolific magician and bed him in slowly as the long-term heir to Roberts' position on the right flank.
