Kent promotion push gathers pace

Kent kept up the pressure on second division leaders Essex after wrapping up a convincing victory by an innings and 127 runs over Sussex in the Specsavers County Championship. Their first Championship win at Hove since 1992 moved Kent on to 195 points, the same number as Essex – who are pushing for victory themselves against Worcestershire at Chelmsford – had at the start of the round.Kent will be hoping that Worcestershire’s batsmen show more application than Sussex’s managed on the third morning as they tamely surrendered eight wickets in 27.5 overs, several of them to questionable shots. Kent seamers Mitch Claydon, Hardus Viljoen and Matt Coles took three wickets each as Sussex suffered their first Championship defeat of the season to end their own slim chance of making a late charge for promotion.Their hopes of making Kent work for victory depended largely on the experienced Chris Nash and Luke Wells but both fell within 30 minutes of the resumption. Nash got a beauty from Viljoen which pitched and left him off the seam but Wells tried to cut a ball that he should have left alone and gave second slip Coles a head-high catch. He wasn’t the only Sussex batsman with poor judgement outside off stump.None suggested they were in the mood to get their head down thereafter. Coles found some extra bounce to have Fynn Hudson-Prentice caught off the glove and Craig Cachopa gave a catch to wicketkeeper Sam Billings, moving in front of first slip.Skipper Ben Brown could consider himself unfortunate when he played on to a ball from Darren Stevens that hardly bounced and by then it was only a case of whether Sussex might hold on until rain arrived at lunch time. But their tail offered little resistance. Ollie Robinson guided a ball at least a yard outside off stump from Coles to third man, Danny Briggs was pinned by Claydon’s nip-backer and with lunch delayed after the ninth wicket fell Claydon wrapped things up when last man Steve Magoffin was caught behind. Only Nash batted for longer than an hour.Kent head to Beckenham next week where victory over Northamptonshire could set up a potential winner-takes-all promotion decider against Essex at Canterbury on September 20.

Arsenal Ready Bid For £154k-p/w Xhaka Upgrade

Arsenal will be scrambling to replace a fan favourite this summer, but could already be honing in on their top target.

What's the latest on Hakan Calhanoglu to Arsenal?

That's according to reports in Italy, with InterLive.it noting Edu's interest in Inter Milan maestro Hakan Calhanoglu.

Given his impressive form in what has been a hugely successful campaign for the Nerazzurri, the Italian giants are unsurprisingly seeking to tie down the Turkey international until 2027. However, this report notes that they must watch out for the Gunners, who could well make an attempt to bring him to north London.

With a bid of around €40m (£35m) expected, and the report going on to suggest that they will soon launch their first attack to lure him, Simone Inzaghi would struggle to turn down such a hefty sum given the financial troubles of his club.

As Granit Xhaka nears the Emirates exit door too, bidding farewell to his home support yesterday, Calhanoglu could represent a fine replacement who might even surpass what has been an outstanding season for the Swiss general.

How good is Hakan Calhanoglu?

In a term where Inter will finish in the top four, have already won the Coppa Italia and still have a Champions League final to play, the 29-year-old has been ever-present, as a testament to his quality.

Featuring 47 times, the deep-lying playmaker has been the silent conductor of his side all year, popping up with four goals and eight assists too.

Serie A has played host to some mesmeric performances from the former AC Milan magician, and it is this consistency in the league that perhaps gives credence to the suggestion that he would easily surpass Xhaka.

Whilst the 30-year-old notched seven goals and seven assists in the Premier League, he did so at the tip of a box midfield in a role far more offensive than his potential successor.

granit-xhaka-arsenal-transfer

Just last season saw Calhanoglu surpass these figures, with his seven goals and 13 assists in the league from deep cementing his return to the top of Italian football.

Even back in 2020 saw the creative leader lauded, with his then-manager Stefano Piolo noting: "It’s difficult to always expect two goals but I expect this type of performance. He’s an exceptional guy, he has the qualities to become the protagonist."

Now, with a 7.31 average rating for this term, the £154k-per-week star has also maintained 2.2 key passes and 1.4 tackles per game, alongside an 88% pass accuracy, via Sofascore. All of these attributes, including the rating, surpass Xhaka's numbers in his greatest offensive year in an Arsenal shirt.

Whilst it would take a while to reach the level of cult hero status that the former FC Basel gem has reached in north London, to surpass his performances would go a long way towards immediately endearing Calhanoglu to the fans as well as aiding in Mikel Arteta's next push for the Premier League title.

Tottenham Hotspur Make First Move To Sign £40m "Monster"

Tottenham Hotspur have contacted Everton over a potential summer transfer for Jordan Pickford, according to a recent report from FootballTransfers.

Who will Jordan Pickford sign for?

Despite signing a long-term contract with Everton back in February, Pickford has continued to be linked with a move to a number of Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, who are set to make him a priority if their talks stall with David De Gea.

Chelsea have also been named as potential suitors for the Englishman, as detailed by CBS reporter Ben Jacobs, however he also claims that Tottenham have "pushed a bit harder", indicating they are more interested in the goalkeeper.

The Blues' interest in the 29-year-old appeared to hinge upon Everton being relegated from the Premier League, as reported by Football Insider, however with the Toffees staying up on the final day, Mauricio Pochettino could move on to other targets.

On the other hand, Spurs still maintain an interest in the England international, having contacted Everton over a potential summer transfer, according to a report from Football Transfers.

It is detailed that the Lilywhites have been following the Everton star for several months, and they have contacted the player's entourage to discuss a summer move, but there is one potential obstacle.

The Toffees are set to demand £40m to part ways with their goalkeeper, and the high asking price could dissuade Tottenham from making a move.

Could Pickford sign for Tottenham?

The report also claims that the former Sunderland man wants assurances about who the new manager will be, as well as whether Harry Kane will stay at the club, before he commits to a move to north London.

Ange Postecoglou is now in the driving seat for the job, with Fabrizio Romano reporting a verbal agreement has been reached, while there have been positive recent noises surrounding Kane's future at Tottenham.

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

As such, Spurs should be able to attract Pickford, and there is some evidence he would be a real upgrade on Lloris, recording a better save percentage than the Frenchman over the course of the past year.

Hailed as a "monster" by members of the media, the £100k-per-week goalkeeper also averaged a superior Sofascore rating in the Premier League last season, when compared to the Spurs goalkeeper, despite playing in a struggling Everton side.

Pickford could be an excellent signing for Everton, and given his vast experience at international level, Tottenham should not be put off by his £40m price tag.

Gabriel, Bishoo pin Pakistan down

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAlthough four Pakistani batsmen made fifties, West Indies finished on top•AFP

After losing another toss and having to bowl again, West Indies rocked Pakistan with Shannon Gabriel’s two wickets in the first over, and had a productive final session to leave Pakistan at 255 for 8 by the end of the first day in Sharjah. Sami Aslam, Younis Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq and Sarfraz Ahmed all made fifties, but Pakistan were pegged back by untimely setbacks, partly of their own making.Resuming at 148 for 3 after tea, Pakistan lost five wickets to concede the advantage to West Indies. Aslam, who had looked increasingly assured for his 74 off 172, was the first to depart. In the first over of the session, he gloved a reverse sweep over the wicketkeeper but Jason Holder ran around from first slip to take a simple catch. Misbah and Sarfraz then added 80 at more than four runs an over, before the Pakistan captain also perished to a reverse sweep that went wrong. Legspiner Devendra Bishoo was the bowler on both occasions and he finished with 4 for 74.That was the start of Pakistan’s silly season. Mohammad Nawaz charged at Bishoo, did not get anywhere near the pitch of the ball and was comprehensively beaten to set up a straightforward stumping. Sarfraz, having brought up an enterprising fifty, drove away from his body, off Gabriel, to drag the ball back onto his stumps. When Bishoo beat Wahab Riaz’s limp forward prod to trap him lbw, Pakistan had lost their last four wickets for 18 runs. They added seven more, before bad light brought proceedings to a premature end, leaving Pakistan to rue the way they had relinquished a good position. It could have been worse. Misbah began his 49th Test in charge – a Pakistan record – by winning his third toss of the series and opting to bat yet again. But that was where the sense of déjà vu ended.Gabriel dismissed Azhar for a first-ball duck off just the second delivery of the match. Banging the ball in short of a length, he got it to rise awkwardly and swing away a touch, to hit the shoulder of the bat and provide a comfortable catch to Kraigg Brathwaite at second slip. It was the third time Gabriel had dismissed Azhar in the series. Then, Gabriel nipped one back into Shafiq to beat his bat and hit his pad. It looked like the ball may have been going down leg, but West Indies reviewed Paul Reiffel’s not-out decision and Hawk-Eye showed it hitting enough of leg stump to send the batsman on his way. Pakistan were 1 for 2.A good start for West Indies could have been even better had Marlon Samuels, fielding at cover, hit the stumps at the keeper’s end after Younis set off for a risky single in the second over. Sami Aslam would have been run-out by a distance. But as both batsmen settled in, they played some lovely shots. Younis timed a half-volley through midwicket for a boundary and followed that up with a gorgeous cover drive a few overs later. Aslam played a beautiful drive through mid-off and unleashed a number of sweeps and slog sweeps. The two put on 106 runs for the third wicket.Younis had a couple of lucky escapes in the 22nd over. He flicked a full ball from offspinner Roston Chase towards midwicket, where Leon Johnson, still wearing a helmet from his stint at a close-in position, dropped a tough catch. Two balls later, Younis charged out but missed a leg-side delivery; wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich fumbled the ball in his haste to effect the stumping and the batsman dived back in to safety.Chase eventually had his man when Younis, on 51, top-edged an attempted sweep to square leg, where Johnson made amends for his earlier drop.Pakistan’s biggest reprieve of the day came halfway through the second session. In the 43rd over, with Misbah batting on 6, Gabriel went up for a big lbw appeal and reviewed the not-out decision. It was a full ball that pitched on off and seemed to miss Misbah’s bat before hitting the pad. Then it hit the back pad, creating two noises and therefore doubt in the on-field umpire’s mind. Without snicko or HotSpot to eliminate the possibility of an inside edge, third umpire Richard Illingworth felt there wasn’t enough evidence to overturn the on-field call. Though the ball would have gone on to hit middle, Misbah survived and added another 47 to his score. But Pakistan frittered away their advantage after tea, allowing West Indies to work through their middle and lower orders and have the better of the opening day.

Arsenal Could Bin Nketiah In £9m Transfer Swoop

Arsenal have been linked to a Serie A striker ahead of the transfer window, as Mikel Arteta aims to bolster his title challenging squad this summer.

The Gunners have reportedly been after the player ‘for a while’, and may opt to finally reach an agreement with the ace as the club enter the search for increased squad depth to bridge the gap between themselves and champions Manchester City.

What’s the latest on Antonio Sanabria to Arsenal?

As noted by La Stampa (via Sports Witness), Torino forward Antonio Sanabria is ‘on the Gunners’ agenda’ this summer.

The report states that the player's value of €10m (£9m) ‘cannot scare off’ clubs interested in the striker, with Arsenal ‘above all’ having interest in the goal-getter for a while.

The interest between club and player reportedly spans over a decade, with the Londoners attempting to sign the ace as a teenager.

What could Antonio Sanabria bring to Arsenal?

Being raised in the infamous youth setting of La Masia, the Paraguayan was destined to shine from a young age, which he’s shown through a strong goal-scoring pattern throughout his career.

Having scored 27 La Liga goals and 32 Serie A goals in his career so far – as per Transfermarkt – the 27-year-old could be a worthy introduction to Arteta’s plans, as the Spaniard bids to have a stronger level of depth going into next season.

Despite displaying a delightful cameo when filling the boots of Gabriel Jesus due to the Brazilian’s injury, Eddie Nketiah remains Arsenal’s third-choice forward behind the former City ace and the newly arriving Leandro Trossard.

With Sanabria potentially on the horizon, the Paraguayan could force the 24-year-old further down the pecking order as he would arrive as an already established goal scorer.

eddie-nketiah-arsenal-khayon-edwards-arteta-academy-hale-end

This season, the Torino sharp-shooter has contributed to 16 goals in Serie A, scoring 12 himself and setting up four for his teammates in an impressive feat for the mid-table side, via Sofascore.

Criticised for ‘not taking his chances’ by those at the Emirates Stadium, Nketiah falls short of the Arsenal target in terms of average number of non-penalty goals, with 0.34 to the San Lorenzo-born gem’s 0.41 per 90, as per FBref.

Arteta could opt to introduce a seasoned player in the final third to add a more clinical aspect to Arsenal, who have been criticised by former player Paul Merson for not scoring ‘scrappy goals’ when it matters most, via GIVEMESPORT.

Lauded as “brilliant” by Roma legend Francesco Totti, Sanabria could be the missing piece to the Spaniard’s puzzle in closing the gap on Pep Guardiola’s side, who have an absurd amount of quality in their ranks, allowing them to conquer on most occasions.

With the transfer window approaching, and an attractive goalscorer potentially available for a low price, Arteta must fire fast to capture his target and bin Nketiah in the process.

Saqlain to help England spinners on India tour

Saqlain Mushtaq is set to join the England squad again as a consultant, as he will join the squad for the India tour on November 2

George Dobell29-Oct-20161:01

Quick Facts: Saqlain Mushtaq from player to coach

Former Pakistan spinner Saqlain Mushtaq will join up with the England squad on November 2 as they prepare for the Test series in India.Saqlain made a good impression in a brief stint as England’s spin bowling consultant during the home Test series against Pakistan. The ECB made no secret of their desire to utilise his experience ahead of the series in India but had expressed some concern over whether they could secure a visa for him. With that issue now resolved – it is understood he has a 15-day visa – he will join the England squad in Mumbai ahead of the first Test in Rajkot on November 9.England hope that Saqlain can help England’s relatively inexperienced spin attack prepare for a series in which they will be required to play a substantial part. Gareth Batty, Adil Rashid and Zafar Ansari have played just 14 Tests between them – in Batty’s case, seven out of eight came more than a decade ago – while Moeen Ali admitted on Friday that he was “nowhere near where I want to be as a spinner.”It may also be that Saqlain proves of benefit to England’s batsmen. During Mushtaq Ahmed’s spell as spin-bowling consultant, he helped the batsmen work out methods of attack against spin bowling.Saqlain, who claimed 208 wickets in a 49-Test career, has previously had spells as a spin consultant with New Zealand and West Indies. The England Test squad has not had a dedicated spin-bowling coach since Mushtaq left the role in early 2014.

Tottenham "Step Up Interest" in 4-3-3 Coach

There could well be light at the end of the tunnel in Tottenham Hotspur's protracted manager search, following an update regarding the club's pursuit of Celtic boss, Ange Postecoglou.

What's the latest on Postecoglou to Spurs?

According to journalist Dan Kilpatrick, the Lilywhites are seemingly set to intensify their interest in the 57-year-old following the Hoops' Scottish Cup final showdown with Inverness on Saturday.

Writing on Twitter, the respected insider stated: "Tottenham set to step up interest in Ange Postecoglou after Saturday’s Scottish Cup final. Australian said to have impressed Levy and has an admirer in Scott Munn."

In his attached piece for the Evening Standard, Kilpatrick revealed that while the experienced coach may not be the up-and-coming asset that chairman Daniel Levy was initially seeking, the Greek-Aussie's impressive work at Parkhead has seemingly caught the attention of the Tottenham hierarchy.

Would Postecoglou be a good appointment for Tottenham?

In truth, the north Londoners appear to be a club in need of a real lift following a rather dismal 2022/23 campaign, having finished in a lowly eighth place in the Premier League to miss out on European qualification altogether.

Having finished the previous season in the top-four following an instant impact from manager, Antonio Conte, there had been suggestions that the club would be able to subsequently challenge for the title, with pundit Brad Friedel having stated back in August:

"Tottenham definitely have an outside chance of winning the Premier League, for sure."

That prediction now looks rather foolish following the woes that Tottenham went on to endure, with the club crying out for a figure such as Postecoglou who can revive their fortunes, both next season and beyond.

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou

As pundit Mark Schwarzer only recently stated, the appointment of the former Yokohama F Marinos boss could well make the Lilywhites "geniune contenders" again, having worked his magic in Glasgow of late.

The attack-minded, 4-3-3 coach had arrived at Celtic Park in 2021 with the Old Firm outfit having finished 25 points behind rivals Rangers in the previous season, although has since gone on to inspire a dramatic turnaround over the last two years, romping to two Scottish Premiership titles and two League Cups thus far.

Evidently a man who "seems to get the best out of players" – according to former Australia colleague, Simon Moore – Postecoglou could well be just the solution to Tottenham's current woes, despite his relative inexperience in the European game.

While it would seemingly be a real step up if the highly-rated tactician was to make the leap to the Premier League this summer, as the aforementioned Moore stated, he has "got a real drive to do extremely well".

Although it may have taken time for Levy to settle on Postecoglou, the Celtic gem could – as Schwarzer remarked – "make Tottenham very competitive at the top end of the table" once again…

CBS Reporter Drops Exciting Striker Hint At Man United

Manchester United will need to pay in excess of £60 million this summer if they are to land a new striker at Old Trafford, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

What's the latest transfer news on Manchester United's striker search?

Manchester United have been linked with several strikers this summer as they look to add an elite forward to their attack, with Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane being among the leading names, though the Red Devils will need to part with around £100 million to land the England international, as per The Daily Mail.

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen is also a target for Erik Ten Hag heading into the forthcoming transfer window alongside Atalanta's Rasmus Hojlund and Eintracht Frankfurt's Randal Kolo Muani, according to The Manchester Evening News.

As per The Mirror, Benfica frontman Goncalo Ramos is also highly thought of at Manchester United and is seen as a 'brilliant prospect' for the future by Old Trafford chiefs.

Calciomercato claimed in March that Juventus hitman Dusan Vlahovic is also being considered by the Red Devils, providing an intriguing mix of strikers that Manchester United could choose to pursue once the window opens for business.

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Jacobs thinks that Manchester United may have to shell out a significant sum of cash to be in with a chance of landing any of these reported targets.

Jacobs told FFC: "I think the last point I would make is that Manchester United are going to have to balance lots of priorities here. If they, for example, want a traditional number nine striker, which is a key and urgent priority position, should that opportunity present itself early in the window. Whether that is for a Kane, which we know is going to be difficult, or Victor Osimhen, which we know is going to be expensive, Gonzalo Ramos, which again will come with a big price tag or a Dusan Vlahovic, which there's a real possibility he'll leave, but again, it's going to be well in excess of £60 million at a minimum."

Who is the most likely target to end up at Manchester United?

All strikers who have been linked with Manchester United will prove to be difficult to attain; however, this may well become an easier task to manage financially once the ownership situation at Old Trafford has been rectified.

One thing we do know is that Red Devils boss Ten Hag is said to be 'obsessed' with Tottenham icon Kane and will act early as they try to secure a deal to entice the 29-year-old away from N17, as per The Guardian.

Tottenham Hotspur'sHarryKane

It is easy to see why Kane is so highly rated by the Manchester United boss, given that he managed to notch 32 goals and five assists from 49 appearances in 2022/23 for a struggling Spurs side, as per Transfermarkt.

Kane may prove to be one of the more tricky deals to complete, though the fact that he is desperate to become the all-time leading goalscorer in the Premier League may just give Manchester United enough leg room to seriously tempt him into considering his future this summer.

West Indies women drew level in their five-match one-day series against England, thanks to a dramatic fightback in another low-scoring contest at Trelawny Stadium in Jamaica. After batting first, West Indies made 148 all out from 50 overs – one run fewer than England’s winning score at the opening fixture on the series on Saturday.England’s slow left-armer, Alex Hartley, took 4 for 31 in 10 overs to give England the upper hand, with Stafanie Taylor top-scoring with 56. In reply, England’s captain Heather Knight made 26 and Natalie Sciver 27, as England reached 107 for 4 in the 37th over. However, they then imploded in spectacular fashion, losing six wickets for three runs to collapse to 110 all out with sevenovers left unused. Deandra Dottin claimed the last four wickets for figures of 4 for 19.”Dottin came on and had a magnificent spell,” England’s Laura Marsh told the BBC. “It’s unfortunate really. We played really well for the first half but credit goes to Dottin because she’s won the game for them. We put ourselves in a brilliant position, the bowlers did a great job. We fancied chasing that score so we’re pretty disappointed. The teams now relocate to Kingston for the final three matches of the series, starting on Friday at Sabina Park.
