Anderson strikes after Lancashire batting slumps

Had James Anderson’s stress fracture healed a trifle more quickly, he would have been playing against Pakistan in the Test match at Lord’s. Instead of that, however, he spent his Saturday at the home of cricket. That, at any rate, is probably how Chris Firth sees it.On most weekends in the summer Firth captains Southport and Birkdale’s first team but at around 5.30am on the first morning of this game, he began tipping up around a thousand seats to remove the overnight rain from them. This is county week at Trafalgar Road and that matters to folk round here.Southport is not alone, of course. By a lunacy of the fixture list likely to make even the most tranquil Buddhist scream in frustration, the coming week sees Lancashire play at Southport at the same time as Glamorgan are playing at Colwyn Bay and Kent at Tunbridge Wells. And yes, it is the Cheltenham Festival, too. It is as though someone had decided to hold a beauty contest for England’s cricketing Elysiums. At all of these great grounds members have taken unpaid holidays in order to welcome first-class cricket. Sightscreens have been painted, hospitality sold and patios brushed to within a cubit of their stony lives. Wickets have been rolled and weather forecasts studied with more than jocular cynicism. Outground cricket is not some indulgent Betjemanesque whimsy; it could be near the heart of the English four-day season if only some counties and a few ECB officials loved it a little more and saw the long-term value of spending a few bob taking the game to the people.Rarely, though, does the composition of the teams in an outground match contain such delightful contrasts as was on offer at Trafalgar Road. In the Lancashire team, for the first two innings anyway, was Anderson, who will almost certainly open England’s bowling against Pakistan on Friday, but also Tom Moores, who was making his first-class debut. Moores, indeed, was watched by his father, Peter, not so long ago an England coach himself, but today, was simply a dad watching his lad.In the Durham side was Ben Stokes, who may line up alongside Anderson on Friday, and Adam Hickey, who had never played in the County Championship before. Of the four players, Moores had just about the better day. His 54-minute 25 helped Lancashire recover a smidgeon from 105 for 5 when Karl Brown was out for nought.Moores added 41 with Steven Croft but was dropped twice, receiving the first generosity when he nicked his first ball to Stokes at third slip, who thus dropped his second catch of the day and hurled the ball into the ground in Vizigothic fury. Merseyside cricket fans are generally unimpressed by such histrionics. “Hey, Stokesy-la! Butterfingers!” one yelled.Moores eventually nicked a catch to Michael Richardson off the medium pace of Keaton Jennings and the same bowler removed Kyle Jarvis, caught and bowled for 2, but it was not these later batsmen’s fault that Lancashire were 188 for 7 at tea or bowled out for 204 shortly after the resumption.Chris Rushworth, bowling on a surface which offered him pace and bounce but which both he and Lancashire’s Alviro Petersen described as a “good cricket wicket”, dismissed the last three batsmen in 11 balls early in the evening session to end the Lancashire innings. Rushworth finished with 4 for 30 from 17 overs while the Lancashire skipper, Croft, was the last man dismissed, caught and bowled by Sunderland’s finest beard for a valiant 54.How Croft must have regretted the profligacy of his colleagues, who had managed to turn a very respectable 91 for 2 into a very dodgy 105 for 5 in just three careless post-prandial overs. This decline began when Luke Procter, having got his nut down in characteristic fashion to make 30 in 135 minutes, flashed at Paul Coughlin but only edged a catch to Richardson. Then Petersen, perhaps surfing the contentment that comes when you make a half-century against a decent attack, called Croft for a second run but was well beaten by Jack Burnham’s throw from deep midwicket. Two overs later, Brown’s horribly flat-footed slash only nicked a catch to Jennings off Graham Onions. In less than the time it took the corporate hospitality boys to move from the claret to the port, Lancashire had gone from gentle prosperity to genteel poverty. But even after they had been bowled out 60 runs short of acceptability, Lancashire cricketers could still console themselves that they had Anderson in their attack during Durham’s first innings. This consolation appeared especially significant when Anderson removed Jennings in the third over of the day but Mark Stoneman and Scott Borthwick then added 69 for the second wicket in a manner that ranged from the confident to the vulnerable. The former was shown by the boundaries the pair stroked off Jarvis; the latter, by the over in which Borthwick played and missed five times to Anderson.Still, though, the pair survived and it looked as though Durham’s cricketers were heading for a position of strength when Procter removed both Stoneman and Burnham in the last five overs of a day that had begun at noon. Catches were edged to Moores and Croft and the Lancashire pair made no mistake. Rushworth considered the game evenly poised and few in the happy crowd on Saturday seemed keen to dispute the contention. And in many respects that final session was the best of the day. A fed and watered crowd watched the cricket in bubbling contentment and the Southport and Birkdale chairman, Tony Elwood, even sported his Bertie Wooster blazer. For the club’s volunteers, all their work was utterly worthwhile as the evening warmed. The sun shone, too, although if the tireless Lindsey Bridge could have found a ladder long enough, she would have sent someone up with a duster to give it a polish.

Rangers Eye Swoop for "Top Professional" This Summer

It’s no secret that Glasgow Rangers are keen on a move to sign goalkeeper Jack Butland this summer, with Michael Beale looking at bolstering his options between the posts ahead of next season.

However, according to The Scottish Sun, Manchester United are looking to double his salary in a bid to keep the Englishman with the club for 2023/24, which could scupper any potential move to Rangers.

Butland hasn’t played a minute for the Red Devils since joining from Crystal Palace on a six-month loan deal, yet Erik ten Hag looks like he wants to retain his services, meaning Beale may have to move onto other targets.

According to the Daily Mail, the 42-year-old has shown an interest in Fortuna Sittard goalkeeper Ivor Pandur, with the report claiming that the Light Blues have sent scouts to watch the Croatian gem in action against PSV Eindhoven last weekend.

He is on loan at the Eredivisie club from Hellas Verona, though he will make the switch permanent this summer after they tied him down until 2027.

Who is Ivor Pandur?

With Allan McGregor looking increasingly likely to hang up his gloves at the end of the season and Jon McLaughlin’s future uncertain, it could leave Robby McCrorie as the only senior ‘keeper in the squad come the summer, and Beale will be looking to provide plenty of competition for the Scot.

Pandur has displayed some impressive form in the Dutch top flight this term, earning a 7.01/10 Sofascore rating for his performances, making the team of the week twice.

The 23-year-old has saved 67% of the shots he has faced this term, which works out as 3.7 saves per game while also achieving a 100% runout success – proving to not only be an excellent shot-stopper, but also effective at coming off his line to prevent goalscoring opportunities.

He also ranks seventh out of all the ‘keepers in the Eredivisie for saves made this season, showing how often he is called into action, and if he makes the move to Rangers, it could be argued that the improved quality of defence compared to his current side will mean he shouldn’t have to make this number of saves.

His ability to save shots from close range has also been on show, with Pandur ranking fifth in the league with 72 saves inside the box – another impressive number. Therefore, if Beale manages to secure a deal, they could land a top ‘keeper.

Fortuna technical manager Sjoerd Ars has lavished praise on him, labelling the player as a “top professional”, and although playing for Rangers would be a major step up, there is surely no doubt that he could handle himself well in Scotland.

Chelsea plan summer swoop for £45m "superstar"

Chelsea face a mountainous task to recapture their status as one of Europe’s most elite clubs after a calamitous campaign has seen them dismally plummet into the bottom half of the table.

The incoming Mauricio Pochettino has to begin trimming his hideously bloated squad to restore some rhythm and harmony.

One problem area that must be immediately addressed is the goalkeeper position, with both Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy seemingly unfit to be long-term solutions.

Inter Milan’s Andre Onana has emerged as one of the West Londoner’s primary targets, and this would be an inspired piece of business for the Blues.

What’s the latest on Andre Onana to Chelsea?

According to The Telegraph, the 2021 Champions League winners to attempting to manoeuvre themselves into pole position to sign the goalkeeper.

Onana’s possible move to England has been fuelled by reputable journalist Rudy Galetti, who has revealed an eye-opening update on the situation.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, he said:

“Onana could leave Inter in the summer if a suitable offer arrives. Chelsea are seriously interested in the Cameroonian goalkeeper. However, the current price at the request of the Italian club is €50m (£45m) and is considered too high by the Blues."

Would Andre Onana be a good signing for Chelsea?

The former Ajax man has been in sensational form since his transfer to Italy in January 2022.

In his Inter Milan career, the 27-year-old has played 38 games in all competitions, and only conceded 30 goals, whilst keeping 19 clean sheets, as per Transfermarkt.

He has also started every game for the Nerazzurri in the Champions League, as they booked themselves into the final of Europe’s most elite competition for the first time since 2010 after dispatching their city rivals.

Andre-Onana-Inter-Milan

Onana, whose career appeared on the brink of collapse after he received a nine-month ban from football after accidentally taking his wife’s medicine, has navigated an unbelievable turnaround thanks to a rich vein of form.

This is reflected by the fact that the shot-stopper ranks in the top 7% in Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers for save percentage (78.2%) per 90, as well as the highest 5% for his clean sheet percentage (47.1%) per 90, as per FBref.

However, his future is shrouded in uncertainty due to Inter Milan’s murky financial situation as the club had to reportedly borrow €275m (£240m).

Therefore, with a rich club like Chelsea sniffing around, it will be difficult for the Nerazzurri giants to rebuke any transfer attempts.

Once hailed as a “superstar” by UEFA journalist Ome Akatugba, Onana would be the perfect remedy for Pochettino's impeding issue that the Blues have thus far failed to deal with.

Rangers Transfer News: Beale Could Bin Dud With £4.5m Splash

Glasgow Rangers will end the 2022/23 campaign later this month without winning a single major trophy for their efforts domestically and in Europe.

The Light Blues have four matches left to play in the Scottish Premiership but their position of second in the table has already been finalised.

Michael Beale has promised fans that there will be a squad "rebuild" in the upcoming transfer window and this could result in a number of departures and arrivals at Ibrox in the weeks and months to come.

One player who is on the chopping block heading into the summer is Scottish winger Scott Wright. It has been reported that he is set to depart the club ahead of next season and the Gers could finally bin him by securing a deal for target Luis Palma.

Rangers are reportedly interested in signing the Aris Thessaloniki forward and his arrival could open up the space for the club to part ways with Wright.

Who is Luis Palma?

The 23-year-old winger is an exciting forward who has caught the eye with his performances in Greece this season and is said to be valued at £4.5m.

He predominantly plays down the left flank but is also capable of operating through the middle or on the right and has showcased his quality as a goalscorer and a creator this term.

Rangers winger Scott Wright competing against Celtic.

Palma has racked up 11 goals and four assists in 20 starts in the Greek Super League and averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.14 for Aris. The dynamo has only missed one 'big chance' in front of goal and created 1.4 chances per match for his teammates, which illustrates his clinical finishing and eye for a pass.

Wright, whose play was once described as "a bit loose" by ex-Gers man Mark Hateley during BBC coverage (via IbroxNews), has registered one assist and zero goals in 22 appearances for Rangers in the Premiership this season.

The forward has created 0.4 chances per game and averaged a dismal – in comparison to Palma's – Sofascore rating of 6.67.

These statistics show that the Scottish lightweight, who has lost 71% of his aerial duels in the top-flight, has struggled to make an impact for the Light Blues. He has not contributed with goals, assists, or key passes, on an even semi-regular basis and this summer could, therefore, be the right time to ditch him.

Palma's exceptional return in front of goal, along with his chance creation numbers, suggest that the Honduras international would come in as a major upgrade on Wright if the ace can adjust to playing in Scotland.

Therefore, Beale could bin off one of his current Rangers duds by securing a £4.5m swoop to sign the exciting Aris attacker in the coming weeks.

Rangers Eye Move For "Exciting" £1.2m Gem

Michael Beale has recently signed his third player for Glasgow Rangers, with midfielder Kieran Dowell joining the Ibrox side on a pre-contract deal until 2026.

He joins Nicolas Raskin and Todd Cantwell as Beale signings, and the signs are certainly looking positive ahead of what promises to be a busy transfer window, with plenty of ins and outs ahead of 2023/24.

The 42-year-old will have to be smart with his transfer dealings as funds may be in short supply, though according to Football Insider, the Gers have been linked with a move for defender Thierry Small, with a fee of around £1.2m demanded by Southampton.

The 18-year-old could follow in the same footsteps as former Ibrox left-back Calvin Bassey, who was sold to Ajax last summer for a club-record fee of £23m having enjoyed a stellar campaign which included a Scottish Cup winners' medal and a Europa League final appearance.

Could Thierry Small join Rangers this summer?

With Beale looking to rejig the squad, anything is possible, and for the aforementioned £1.2m fee, it could well prove to be an excellent investment, similar to that of Bassey.

The current Ajax star cost the Light Blues just £230k as a compensation fee to Leicester City in the summer of 2020, and having made sporadic appearances in his debut season, a defensive injury crisis last term gave him the chance to impress at centre-back as he played 50 games across all competitions.

Like Bassey, Small is also a left-back, while he can play slightly further forward if required, and he has spent the second half of the season on loan at St Mirren, giving him good experience of the physical nature of Scottish football.

Small is still in the embryonic stages of his career, with his 6.44/10 Sofascore rating indicating that he is still on a steep learning curve, however, he has managed to make one key pass per game while grabbing an assist, indicating that he has shown glimpses of his attacking abilities.

Defensively, the youngster averages 1.3 tackles and one clearance per game, which despite ranking him 7th and 14th in the squad respectively is rather respectable considering he has only started seven Premiership games.

Former Rangers centre-back Calvin Bassey.

Football writer Simon Peach lauded the defender as “exciting” and “highly rated” after he moved to Southampton from Everton in 2021, so he perhaps has the potential to make the breakthrough at Ibrox over the next year or two.

With Borna Barisic entering the final year of his contract, it appears as though Beale is looking at young talent to fill the void when he finally departs, and in the process, he may just unearth another £23m gem.

Bangladesh fielding coach hopeful of England tour going ahead

Bangladesh’s fielding coach Richard Halsall has said that he feels safe working in Bangladesh and is hopeful of England’s arrival on September 30

Bangladesh’s fielding coach Richard Halsall has said that he feels safe working in Bangladesh and is hopeful of England’s arrival on September 30 for a tour comprising three ODIs and two Tests. Halsall, the former England fielding coach, said that although the security situation in the country has improved, England will look into it themselves before taking a decision.Halsall returned to Dhaka on Friday evening, the first of the team’s foreign coaching staff to return after the terror attack in the Bangladesh capital on July 1. Mario Villavarayan, the strength and conditioning coach, came on Saturday, while head coach Chandika Hathurusingha is scheduled to arrive on Sunday evening. There have been questions about England’s visit to Bangladesh. Eoin Morgan, the captain, had admitted to big concerns over the side’s security. Morgan had suggested neutral venues may be “feasible if it came to that”, but Nizamuddin Chowdhury, BCB’s chief executive, rejected any talk of playing Bangladesh at a neutral venue.”I am hopeful that the tour will take place,” Halsall said. “England are, I think, committed to playing cricket all over the world. Their Under-19s were here for the World Cup, but, maybe, the security situation in Bangladesh is better now because awareness of the situation is heightened. I think people are bit more honest about the threat level and there’s no denial that there’s a threat. But that exists here and everywhere.”Being honest about there being a threat is the first step to dealing with it. You have got to get on with it. It is my job to coach, and for England to assess whether it is safe here for their players. I think it is safe to be here. But it is up to them to decide whether it is safe for the team to come. Obviously, it is a different situation for a team. But I really hope that they do come. We need to play some international cricket.”Halsall talked about his own experience, having been in London during the 2005 bombings and also with the England team days before the terror attacks in Mumbai in 2008. Halsall said that he would have returned to Dhaka to continue his work, but the BCB had made the situation easier for him.”What has happened is not an incident, it is an atrocity. But they happen all over the world, in Belgium, France, Germany,” Halsall said. “I happened to be in London when it was under attack. I was in India when the Taj [Mahal Hotel, Mumbai] was attacked. We had only just left the Taj a week earlier. The world we live in, nowadays, these things do happen. And it is tragic for people involved. So my thoughts are with those people who have been murdered.”Obviously, you have to take stock of the situation. It was always my intention to come back. I am a professional, and my job is to coach. The BCB has been very kind to me. The sensible thing to do after the attack was to let everything calm down. We didn’t have any international cricket at the time. Let the BCB take stock of exactly what they should be doing.”I think things probably calmed down, but it doesn’t mean things aren’t going to happen, but that’s the same in England, America, Australia, France, Germany. We just have to be sensible, work with the right people. Be honest about the threat level and work towards a more peaceful environment,” he said. When asked if Bangladesh would have trouble returning to cricket after a long break from international cricket, in case the series is held as scheduled, Halsall said that the team would have an advantage over England on account of being fresher.”We have two months to prepare for the series, so you can do everything you want to do,” he said. “You can set exact workloads for your bowlers, you can practice all the bowlers you’re going to face, you can be fresh and hungry. Or, if you want to pitch it in a negative way, we won’t be battle-hardened.”But the English are going to be shattered because they just played seven Tests in three months. Their ODIs are going to be over in September. So are they going to be able to bring their best players? They have five Tests against India after they play us. You can pitch it any way you want to, but our players are going to be ready for the first ODI. We have to see it as an advantage.”England are scheduled to play three ODIs, two Tests and three practice matches on their tour of Bangladesh. The ODIs are scheduled to start from October 7, while the two-Test series is slated to begin from October 20.

Newcastle United Team News: "Superb" Player Ruled Out Vs BHAFC

Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff “won’t be involved” in the Premier League game vs Brighton and Hove Albion tonight, according to Eddie Howe.

What's the latest injury news on Sean Longstaff?

The Magpies academy graduate was involved in a heavy challenge during the 4-1 win against Everton last month which saw him sustain a foot injury and he therefore hasn’t featured since, missing the three matches against Southampton, Arsenal and Leeds United.

Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie confirmed that the 25-year-old was set to go for a follow-up scan to further assess the extent of his problem, and whilst ChronicleLive soon after revealed that he had suffered no broken bones, not to mention that the manager admitted last week that fans "could see him as early as next week if he improves quickly", he still isn’t ready to stage his comeback to the first-team.

Speaking during Wednesday’s pre-match press conference, Howe confirmed that Longstaff is ruled out of this evening’s fixture vs Brighton, whilst also providing an update on the fitness of Jacob Murphy. As quoted by Newcastle’s official website, he said:

“I think we’re quite clear on the injury but it’s just how long it takes to heal. He made good progress yesterday so let’s see how he feels today but he won’t be involved for this game. Jacob is probably the one doubt we’ll have for the game."

Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff.

Will Longstaff's absence be a blow for Newcastle?

After Brighton, Newcastle only have two games of the 2022/23 season remaining against Leicester City and Chelsea, so Howe will be hoping to have Longstaff back at his disposal before the conclusion of the current campaign, but in the short-term, it’s definitely a blow for the central midfielder to be ruled out once again.

The St. James’ Park star, who pockets £50k-per-week, has posted seven goal contributions (four assists and three goals) across all competitions this season and has been a regular feature of the first-team having made 27 starts in the top-flight, so he’s clearly viewed as an important member of the squad.

The Magpies’ “superb” dominator, as once lauded by journalist Josh Bunting, also offers wonderful versatility with his ability to operate in five various positions over the pitch, including four in the midfield and even as a second striker, so the sooner he returns to action in the northeast to help try and nail down a place in the Champions League, the better as far as the manager is concerned.

£120k-p/w Newcastle Man Praised After Premier League Draw

Journalist Lee Ryder has praised Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier after he "dominated" in the club's most recent draw.

What's the latest on Newcastle vs Leicester?

The Magpies managed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in 20 years last night after playing Leicester City.

The Foxes are fighting for their lives at the other end of the Premier League table and managed to come away with a point on the day.

Indeed, the match ended 0-0 with Newcastle unable to get on the scoresheet, despite hitting the post three times. That point was still enough to see Eddie Howe's side secure a spot in the top four.

And it seems as though the manager can thank his captain for that as the right-back put in a fine display – as noted by Ryder.

In the ChronicleLive player ratings, the journalist handed Trippier and 8/10 for his efforts and wrote: "Dominated down the right with a ridiculous 162 touches."

What award has Trippier won?

It seems Ryder wasn't the only one to appreciate the defender's efforts with Dominic Scurr signing Trippier's praises in the Shields Gazette player ratings too.

He gave him a 7/10 and said: "Kept Newcastle on the front foot all evening with smart passing down the right. Put some good deliveries into the box which Newcastle ought to have done better with."

And when you look at the stats on SofaScore, you can see why the journalists were impressed. After all, Trippier helped out defensively as he made one clearance, one tackle and of course was part of the backline that kept a clean sheet.

More eye-catching, though, was his attacking involvement as he was immense on the right flank with a whopping 162 touches (39 more than any other player). He delivered 20 crosses (17 more than any other player), completed 113 passes and 15/18 long balls as well as three key passes, with one big chance created.

Newcastle United captain Kieran Trippier.

Having been the first signing under the new ownership group – which has been able to invest in the transfers that have propelled NUFC up the table – it's safe to say Trippier has been a hit.

After all, the £120k-p/w England international was honoured after the game as he was handed the club's 22/23 Player of the Season award.

All in all, not a bad night for the defender with Champions League football secured and personal accolades picked up.

Thakur casts doubt over mini IPL

BCCI president Anurag Thakur has said the board has put any plans for a mini IPL in the USA on hold, with T20 internationals being the preferred foray in the American market. The key obstacle, according to Thakur, was the time zone difference. Matches would need to start at 10am local time on the east coast in the USA, making mid-week fixtures difficult to draw big crowds and also limiting their options for alternate venues around the country.”I think we must understand the time difference,” Thakur told ESPNcricinfo. “IPL is seen in India from 7 o’clock to 11 or 11.30 at night. So you have to play somewhere in the east coast here (USA) so [that] the timing matches. If we have to play in the day here, the matches should be seen in India at night because broadcasting is a big thing. So you can’t make your home fan lose [by] playing outside India. So which are the provinces you can play in United States? That’s a big task.”IPL, we are not even thinking of hosting it outside India. It has to be hosted in India, but there are many other options what you can do which we’ll let you know over a period of time when we come out with a long-term plan for this market.”The BCCI had announced the idea of a “mini IPL” or “IPL overseas” in June when Thakur had said the board would host the tournament in September. A final approval was awaited after talks with franchises and broadcasters but no announcement has been made yet. During informal conversations with the BCCI, though, top officials have pointed out bizarrely that Thakur had never announced any plans for a tournament called “mini IPL.”The USA and UAE were options being discussed at the IPL governing council and working committee meetings earlier this year. “We have to look into various details: which country we can play in, how many teams, how many players should participate, who will be the broadcaster – all these issues need to deliberated, but we are keen to play in that [September] window,” Thakur had said in June. The BCCI had been trying to fill an empty window as India are not scheduled to play any cricket till the home Tests against New Zealand start on September 22.1:07
