India can handle Mendis – Dravid

Rahul Dravid is confident India can handle the threat posed by “mystery spinner” Ajantha Mendis on the tour of Sri Lanka next month. Mendis tormented India’s batsmen in 2008, taking 26 wickets in what was his debut series, as the home side emerged 2-1 winners over three Tests.Dravid said India had figured out Mendis over the last two years and should be able to play him well. “He is still a good bowler,” he told reporters. “He was completely new to us when we toured Sri Lanka last time. He got the measure our team last time, there is no doubt about it. He played a major role in the series. But hopefully, we have learnt our lesson.”I think we played him pretty well when he came to India. We learnt how to tackle him. Having said that international bowlers keep on improving, international bowlers come up with new tricks every time. But hopefully we will have the answers [to] whatever Mendis throws at us this time.”Mendis played just one Test on Sri Lanka’s tour of India last year, taking two wickets while conceding 162 runs. The last time Dravid played international cricket was in January, when he scored an unbeaten century against Bangladesh in the second of two Tests. Injury ruled him out the subsequent series against South Africa, but he was part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore team that finished third in the IPL. He said he needed a little time to get back into the rhythm of Test cricket.”Sometimes, it is little bit of challenge to return to Test cricket after a long break but there is preparation time in Sri Lanka. I am looking forward to some match practice before the series.”However, Dravid said the break from cricket was good for him and he has been training hard over the last six weeks to get ready for the tour. He predicted a close contest between two rivals who have seen a lot of each other in recent times.”Sri Lanka is a very formidable team and they play tough cricket at home. In the last two times we travelled there, we won a Test match but did not win the series. It is a positive sign to win a Test there but it is now important for us to keep that performance going right throughout the upcoming series.”It is going to be a challenge but we have got a good team. We have got bowlers who are capable of taking 20 wickets, which is important to win a Test. If we can put runs on the board, hopefully we will have a good series.”Galle will host the first Test, which kicks off on July 18, while the next two matches will be held in Colombo, at the SSC and the P Sara Oval. The second and third Tests are between July 26 and 30 and August 3 and 7 respectively.

No UDRS for Sri Lanka-India Tests

The Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) will not be used during the upcoming Test series between Sri Lanka and India

India didn’t use the UDRS well enough in their previous tour of Sri Lanka•AFP

The Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) will not be used during the upcoming Test series between Sri Lanka and India. “The decision at the ICC meeting was that both the teams should agree with having the DRS system. When we checked with India, they were not happy to have it,” Nishantha Ranatunga, secretary of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), told Cricinfo. In its annual conference, the ICC had decided: “One of the decisions is that the host member would determine whether to use DRS in home Test series (following consultation with the visiting country).” It was during this consultation that Sri Lanka couldn’t achieve an agreement with the visiting team, India. The UDRS, which has courted controversy since its implementation, was first used in the 2008 series between the same teams, and immediately became a key player in the contest. The controversial and impractical Virender Sehwag dismissal aside, Sri Lanka used the challenge system way better than India, securing marginal lbw dismissals for Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis that would have otherwise needed brave umpires to call. Sri Lanka made 11 successful reviews in that 2-1 series win, as opposed to India’s one.On their return tour to India, Kumar Sangakkara lamented the absence of the UDRS. He said it cost his side “over 500 runs and a lot of wickets” during the 2-0 defeat. To add to his frustrations then, the review system was used in two simultaneous series being played elsewhere. When asked if the absence of the review system would be a disadvantage for the home team, Ranatunga said: “Definitely it will be a disadvantage. Not only for Sri Lanka, it’s a disadvantage for India as well. It’s a disadvantage for all the players.”India haven’t really been fans of the system, and haven’t been involved in any series since then that has used the UDRS. Sachin Tendulkar had said he wasn’t won over by the system, largely due to the inadequate technology that has prevented its successful implementation. The Hot Spot, he said, was a better means to establish contact between bat and ball, and ball and pad.The host broadcasters don’t use the required technology, and that could be one of the reasons why India decided not to use the UDRS. However, Ranatunga said the Indians didn’t give any reasons for their choice.

A outra peça do lado esquerdo é Clayson.

Leeds make contact over Valentin Castellanos

Leeds United have made contact with the representatives of New York City forward Valentin Castellanos ahead of a possible move.

The Lowdown: Castellanos profiled

Castellanos is 23 years of age and is primarily a centre-forward who can also play on either wing.

An Argentina Under-23 international, Castellanos has scored 49 goals during his career so far and has been with New York City for three years.

His Transfermarkt value has soared during his time in America to a career-high £6.3m – making him New York City’s most valuable player at this moment in time.

Leeds attacker Jack Harrison also spent time with the MLS side early in his career, and it seems as if the Whites are keen on Castellanos’ services.

The Latest: Leeds contact

According to La Página Millonaria, relayed by Sports Witness, River Plate have made an improved offer for Castellanos in the last few hours.

However, along with River Plate, Castellanos’ agents have also received a phone call from Leeds, who are keen on a summer move and Andrea Radrizzani is willing to pay €12.3m (£10.3m).

The Verdict: Unlikely…

Perhaps the chance to play under his compatriot Marcelo Bielsa could prove tempting, but with the transfer window in Argentina still open for seven more days and Castellanos apparently keen on returning to his native country, it seems as if a move to Elland Road in the summer is extremely unlikely.

The Whites had their chance to move for the forward last month, but, as we know, the club failed to bolster their senior ranks. That decision could prove to be a costly one over the coming months, especially with Bielsa’s side finding themselves in a relegation battle.

Bielsa’s thin squad on top of a number of injuries have played their part this season, so adding someone like Castellanos and a midfielder in January could have been a wise move.

West Ham: Moyes can axe Diop with Baptiste

It would be something of an understatement to say that the heart of the West Ham United defence has been a problem area for David Moyes so far this season – with Angelo Ogbonna being ruled out for the remainder of the campaign with an ACL injury, Issa Diop’s form having fallen off a cliff and Kurt Zouma clearly being impacted by a very much self-inflicted off-field issue.

And, while the Hammers have somehow scraped five points from their last three fixtures against Watford, Leicester City and Newcastle United respectively, it is an unavoidable fact that over the Irons’ last eight league games – only one of which has come against a so-called big-six side – they have conceded 13 goals.

As such, it is clear to see why a new centre-back was one of the 58-year-old manager’s priority positions in the January transfer window. However, after failing to bring a fresh face to the club this winter, perhaps it would now be a smart move for the Scotsman to take a closer look at one of the Hammers’ most exciting up and coming defensive talents – in the shape of Jamal Baptiste.

“He’s got everything”

Despite being just 18 years of age, there is already a considerable amount of hype surrounding the future of the young defender – and it is not difficult to see why.

Indeed, the teenager is already a regular in West Ham’s U23 side, having featured in 16 Premier League 2 fixtures so far this season, scoring three goals along the way, as well as appearing in all three of the youth side’s Papa John’s Trophy matches, over which Baptiste provided his teammates with one assist.

Furthermore, the £180k-rated centre-back is clearly a player whom Moyes is aware of, with the 58-year-old having handed the youngster his first-team debut in the 4-0 FA Cup win over Doncaster Rovers last season, as well as starting the defender in the 1-0 Europa League loss against Dinamo Zagreb back in December.

However, it would still appear there is a great deal more to come from Baptiste, with the former West Ham academy manager previously stating of the 18-year-old: “One of the finest young prospects at the club, without any doubt, is Jamal Baptiste who, believe me, is going to be a monster player in the Issa Diop mould. I see him as exactly that – the new Issa Diop.

“He’s got everything – height, power, pace and is already, at such a young age, making a serious impact on the U23s. They’re going to be a lot of clubs after him but when he sees players coming through into the first team that counts for a lot.”

As such, with the £67k-per-week Diop’s place in the West Ham first team looking increasingly uncertain, with the former France U21 international having been heavily linked with a move away from East London in January, it would appear highly advisable for Moyes to finally unleash “the new Issa Diop” more regularly over the remainder of the season – as it is clear that Baptiste is a player who has an exceptionally bright future in the game.

Pakistan fight hard in huge chase

Teams facing the prospect of a world-record run-chase generally find themselves praying for rain at some stage of the proceedings, but Pakistan have never been the most conventional of outfits

The Bulletin by Andrew Miller at Lord's15-Jul-2010 Pakistan 148 and 114 for 1 (Butt 58*, Azhar 28*) need 326 more runs to beat Australia 253 and 334 (Katich 83, Hilfenhaus 56*, Gul 4-61)

Teams facing the prospect of a world-record run-chase generally find themselves praying for rain at some stage of the proceedings, but Pakistan have never been the most conventional of outfits. When play resumes for Friday’s fourth day, every batsman in the “home” dressing room will be praying for skies as cloudless as those that they might expect in Karachi at this time of year, as they set their sights on a marathon target of 440 to win the first Test against Australia. It is an outlandish notion, especially given that the same 11 cricketers crumbled to 148 all out in Pakistan’s first innings, but such is the effect that the weather has on Lord’s. When the atmosphere is heavy, the ball does handstands, but when the sun breaks through, the pitch becomes as flat as Faisalabad – as Salman Butt and the debutant Azhar Ali demonstrated in taking Pakistan’s score to a confident 114 for 1 in 37 overs at the close of the third day.The only breakthrough came when Imran Farhat suffered a rush of blood against Steven Smith, and wiped a horrid cross-batted mow to Shane Watson at midwicket to give the young legspinner his maiden Test wicket. Butt on the other hand chose his shots far more responsibly, to push confidently along to an unbeaten 58 – his second half-century of the match. Alongside him, the 25-year-old Azhar displayed a calm assurance in a tense scenario, even though Ben Hilfenhaus might well have capped a personally memorable day by pinning him lbw for 28 from the very last ball of the day.And so the match boiled down to a simple equation. Pakistan need a further 326 runs for victory, Australia need nine more wickets in six sessions. It was a scenario reminiscent, in fact, of Australia’s last visit to Lord’s in 2009, when England assumed the match was in the bag as the Aussies chased a massive 522 in the fourth innings, only for Michael Clarke and Brad Haddin to run them uncomfortably close as they finished on 406. It took a never-say-die intervention from Andrew Flintoff to overcome the conditions (and the opponents) that day. Australia won’t want history to have to repeat itself. This time around, the third morning dawned as both of the first two had done, with dank skies overhead and all sorts of opportunities for Pakistan’s seamers to capitalise on their late burst of four wickets in 10.1 overs on the previous evening. The fact that they were thwarted was almost entirely thanks to the determination of Australia’s opener, Simon Katich, who batted 174 balls for an invaluable 83 – a performance that, in addition to his first-innings 80, looked sure to have him nailed down for the Man of the Match award. But then, midway through the afternoon session, with Australia’s innings ebbing away on 208 for 8, the heavens cleared and the context of the contest was transformed. Each of Australia’s three remaining batsmen – the debutant wicketkeeper Tim Paine, and Nos. 10 and 11, Hilfenhaus and Doug Bollinger – recorded their Test-best scores as Pakistan’s seamers found that the ball was now refusing to budge an inch from the straight and narrow.Hilfenhaus’s previous best had been an insubstantial 20, but he bettered that in boundaries alone, as he took the long handle to a conveyor belt of dispirited bowlers, not least Mohammad Asif, who had been so deadly under the cloud cover, but now suffered the indignity of being cracked over the covers for a nose-rubbing six.For Paine, the contrast between first innings and second could scarcely have been more stark. On Tuesday he had laboured to 7 from 46 balls as Asif and Mohammad Aamer kept him under the cosh. Now he found himself cruising to 47 from 85, in a ninth-wicket stand of 74. His one moment of discomfort came on 4, when Umar Gul bent his back to nip a lifter into his nether regions, but it was quite some surprise when he played around a full-length delivery from Afridi to be bowled on the brink of his maiden half-century.After picking up the solitary wicket of the nightwatchman, Mitchell Johnson, in the morning session, Pakistan had resumed after lunch with one of their typically intermittent bursts of inspiration, when Gul and Asif struck within three balls of one another to remove both not-out batsmen, Katich and Marcus North (20) without addition to the score. When Smith fell lbw to the second ball of Danish Kaneria’s new spell, three key wickets had fallen for 20, and Australia’s advantage – 313, with two wickets standing – didn’t look quite so insuperable. But then the sun peeked through the clouds for the first time in eight sessions, and Australia’s tail wagged to such violent effect that the end-of-innings scorecard looked like an administrative error, with nine men reaching double figures, but none other than Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey making ducks. It was a fact that highlighted how much the game had changed. A contest that had started with a clatter of wickets looked set to be decided amid a deluge of runs. Australia remain overwhelming favourites, but if the clouds stay away, Pakistan could yet make them toil.
