Segundo o capitão Dudu, o time teve “um branco” no primeiro tempo.

Leeds: Graham Smyth drops transfer development

Leeds United are active in the January transfer window and are ‘progressing’ in their pursuit of new additions, according to reliable reporter Graham Smyth.

The Lowdown: Drameh on the move…

It has been a quiet start to the winter window when it comes to incomings, even though Victor Orta is thought to be after two midfield signings.

However, even though the Whites are yet to get any players through the door at Thorp Arch, it appears as if they are happy to allow Cody Drameh to leave on loan.

The young right-back is set to join Cardiff City on loan until the end of the season, and according to Smyth, Orta is working hard on potential incomings too.

The Latest: Smyth’s post

Smyth, chief football writer at The Yorkshire Evening Post, replied to a fan on Twitter on Monday morning who asked about updates on new signings.

This is what he had to say in reply, providing a positive outlook.

“They’re active. Things are ‘progressing’ we’re told.”

The Verdict: Good signs

Leeds have question marks over 11 players ahead of the trip to West Ham this weekend, so there’s no doubt that fresh faces would give the whole squad a much-needed boost.

You could argue that letting Drameh leave on loan puts more pressure on Luke Ayling and the versatile Stuart Dallas, so another player capable of adding depth in multiple positions like Dallas could prove priceless.

Leeds are short of midfield and attacking options and have a number of defenders injured, so it remains to be seen where the club may strengthen first. A versatile midfielder would be a good starting point, however, time is quickly running out, so Orta could do with making things happen before the weekend.

In other news: Radz and 49ers may now finance Leeds move for versatile ace with ‘great acceleration’.

Big screen referrals and desperate ducks

Ryan Harris has over-stepped the mark on a couple of occasions during the first Test•Getty Images

No ball, no wicket
Ryan Harris was convinced he had Brendon McCullum lbw for a third-ball duck early in the day as New Zealand struggled in their first innings. Ian Gould agreed and gave McCullum out, but an instant challenge came from the batsman. It turned out to be a good one as the replays showed Harris had over-stepped and the delivery became a no-ball. It looked like Martin Guptill, the non-striker, was keeping a close eye on Harris’ foot and he had every reason to. On the first day, Harris had picked up his first Test wicket when he had Tim McIntosh caught at gully, and replays suggested that delivery was also a no-ball. That one wasn’t picked up.Reviewing the review
Reviews are often controversial and part of the drama in the past has arisen because the players and umpires aren’t shown the replays and therefore don’t know what the third umpire has seen. That has changed at the Basin Reserve, where the entire review process is broadcast on the electronic scoreboard just as it is to TV viewers at home. It made for an interesting outcome when Tim Southee was given caught behind to end New Zealand’s first innings, challenged the decision, and waited several minutes for the result. The players and umpires watched intently at the big screen as every possible angle was analysed, the fans began a slow hand-clap and although it looked like there might have been daylight between bat and ball, the decision was eventually upheld.A Tuff match continues
Daryl Tuffey hasn’t taken a Test wicket against Australia in ten years and his game became even worse when he was run out without scoring in the first innings. Tuffey took off for a quick single and appeared to have made his ground when Nathan Hauritz managed a direct hit at the bowler’s end. Asad Rauf was convinced he was in and even fixed the stumps before belatedly deciding to check with Aleem Dar upstairs. The replay showed that Tuffey might have been over the line but lazily had not grounded his bat, in a piece of running that would have had under-13 coaches fuming. The New Zealand coach agreed. “That’s schoolboy stuff, really,” Mark Greatbatch said. “He’s disappointed and hopefully he’ll learn from it. You don’t tend to do those things more than once.”A golden debut
Brent Arnel enjoyed the perfect start to his Test career on the first day when he grabbed a wicket in his first over. The notable feats continued on the third day when he edged to slip from his first ball. It is a dubious honour to be added to the list of ducks on debut, especially golden ducks. Arnel was the first New Zealander to score a golden duck in the first innings of his first Test since James Franklin nine years ago. Franklin went one better – he was also out for 0 in the second innings.

Nketiah could be Villa’s next Abraham

Even though Aston Villa currently have a strike duo of Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings, who have scored a combined total of nine Premier League goals so far this season prior to today’s clash at Everton, it hasn’t stopped the Midlands club from keeping an eye on other potential attacking transfer targets.

In a recent report for The Athletic by Gregg Evans, Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah has been “considered” for a potential move to Villa Park during the January transfer window.

With this in mind, Villa manager Steven Gerrard has the chance to turn the 22-year-old, who is currently picking up £17k-per-week according to Salary Sport, into the club’s next version of former loan star Tammy Abraham.

Villa signed the latter on loan from Chelsea in 2018 when they were still in the Championship.

During his spell at Villa Park, the striker racked up 26 goals and three assists in 40 appearances under Dean Smith, helping them to secure promotion back to the Premier League before he returned to Chelsea.

As a young English attacker from one of the top Premier League clubs in London, Nketiah could follow in the footsteps of Abraham by making a move to Villa and testing his talents there given that regular game-time in Mikel Arteta’s side has been hard to come by this season.  The 22-year-old has just eight appearances under his belt across all competitions despite scoring 69 goals in his career at senior and youth levels.

While he might not be a regular starter every week for Villa if he were to make the move this month or even in the summer, when his current deal at Arsenal expires, he would have a better chance of getting more minutes competing against the likes of Watkins and Ings than he is enjoying at Arsenal.

Labelled a “goalscoring machine” in the past by Arsenal youth development figure David Court, Nketiah has the ability and time ahead of him to fight for a regular starting place in Villa’s side in the near future, making a potential transfer swoop for him worth a shot, especially if they can get him as a free agent in the summer.

Vijay blasts Chennai to vital victory

The fear of an early elimination from the tournament drove Chennai Super Kings to deliver their best all-round performance, that too against the table leaders

The Bulletin by Kanishkaa Balachandran31-Mar-2010
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
How they were outKevin Pietersen scored 23 and conceded 26 in his first IPL game of the season•Indian Premier League

The fear of an early elimination from the tournament drove Chennai Super Kings to deliver their best all-round performance, that too against one of the top teams in the tournament so far. Their propensity to choke despite being in a winning position, like against Kings XI Punjab, threatened to hurt them again in front of their home fans, but some late hitting from Suresh Raina complemented the solid foundation laid by his spinners and an attacking half-century by M Vijay. Chennai won with an over to spare and Royal Challengers Bangalore’s 161 wasn’t enough. It was a game that Chennai were always likely to win, after restricting Bangalore to a par score. Teams with in-form local players have been more successful than those without and Vijay was the difference today. An aggressive batsman who rarely plays ungainly strokes, Vijay finally delivered after failing to convert his starts in the earlier games. He showed glimpses of his abilities during a cameo against Rajasthan Royals before a run out cut short his innings, but today he was determined to go one step further, sometimes two or three, stepping down the pitch and carting the bowlers without sacrificing his style.Hayden, for once, had to ride on the passenger seat. At the end of three overs, he had faced just one ball for no runs. Vijay faced the other 17 and had already zipped to 37, 24 of those coming off a single over from Praveen Kumar. Vijay began with textbook boundaries, punching Praveen past cover and flicking Dale Steyn past square leg. Bangalore weren’t prepared for the explosion in the third over when Vijay opened fire. A short delivery was hooked for six, a slower one was dismissed over wide long-on, a leg-side delivery was worked past short fine leg and a length ball was clipped over deep square leg. Vijay’s footwork was complemented by his placement and a right dose of power.A worried Anil Kumble brought himself on in the fourth over and immediately checked the scoring, cutting back on pace and cramping the batsmen for room. A subdued Hayden sashayed down the pitch and was foxed by a googly. Kumble had conceded just nine off his first two overs, but support wasn’t forthcoming from the other end as the second spinner, Pietersen, got pasted.Vijay, who had reached his fifty off 29 balls in the eighth over, thumped three sixes off Pietersen over the on side, using his feet on each occasion. However, an ambitious attempt at a fourth led to his dismissal, scooping to wide long-on, and it was a moment of relief for Bangalore. Kumble continued to strangle the scoring after Vijay’s departure but a couple of quick wickets would have made it closer affair. Raina and MS Dhoni improvised, nudged balls in to the gaps and kept the asking-rate within manageable levels. But ambitious pulls from Dhoni and S Badrinath led to top edges and nearly altered the script. Raina, though, kept his cool and an inside-out scoop to a front foot no-ball from Vinay Kumar led to wild celebrations and relief in the Chennai camp.It was Chennai’s better bowling effort that set up the victory by preventing Bangalore from setting an impregnable target. Shadab Jakati said in an interview that the pitch was slow and had gripped. He and Muttiah Muralitharan conceded just 37 in eight overs.A half-century partnership between Jacques Kallis and Virat Kohli set Bangalore up for something bigger after Robin Uthappa threatened during a cameo, aided by yet another dropped catch. The drop cost Chennai 21 runs, and it brought Kallis and Kohli together for a stand of 63 for the third wicket. They focused on keeping wickets in hand and kept dropping the ball to pick up singles against the spinners. Murali bowled round the wicket to keep Kallis in check and Jakati fired the quicker ones at the stumps. The problem of full-tosses persisted for Chennai but ironically, it was that ball which helped break the partnership. Kohli chipped down the track to a full toss and scooped it straight to Vijay at long-on. It was the start of the best over the day, as Kallis tried to pinch a cheeky single to extra cover and was run out by a sharp pick up and throw by Raina. It turned out to be a double-wicket maiden for Chennai.Chennai, however, undid the good work by letting Cameron White and Pietersen share a brisk stand of 44 in 4.3 overs. White wrecked Thilan Thushara’s figures by making room and swatting him over the onside, before Pietersen walloped him over long off for a big six. The target of 162, as Kumble later said, was about 15 short of an ideal score. Bangalore remained at No.2 but Chennai moved up two spots to No.5.

Romano: Arsenal "will" sign a striker

Fabrizio Romano has delivered a major update on Arsenal’s transfer plans…

What’s the word?

According to the Italian journalist, the Gunners will definitely sign a new striker in 2022, whether they are able to this month or will have to wait until the summer still remains to be seen.

“Arsenal are trying to sign [Dusan] Vlahović since October – but Dusan is still planning to leave in summer, not now. Nothing has changed yet. Really complicated negotiation on player/agents side. Many clubs will be in the race in June,” he revealed on Twitter before adding:

“Arsenal have many names in the list for the new striker now or summer. It’s not only Vlahovic. And they will sign an important striker in 2022, for sure.”

Vlahovic seems increasingly unlikely for the north London outfit this month but it’s not all doom and gloom as Romano claims that the club will land a first-team ready forward before the end of the year.

Several intriguing names have been mooted with a move to the Emirates Stadium in recent weeks, ranging from Lille talisman Jonathan David to Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Much-needed addition

This will surely come as music to the ears of manager Mikel Arteta, who will be hugely concerned about his striker department heading into the summer.

That’s because he could quickly be without a senior centre-forward.

Alexandre Lacazette looks destined to leave Arsenal for nothing at the end of the season as his contract comes to an end. There has been little talk on him extending his deal to remain.

Meanwhile, the future of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is perhaps the biggest question mark. He was stripped of the captaincy after a disciplinary breach last month and has not started since the defeat to Manchester United at the start of December.

And now the 31-year-old has been sent home from the Gabon camp at the Africa Cup of Nations due to health complications, only further throwing doubt over his chances of playing for the Gunners ever again.

It also seems unlikely that Eddie Nketiah will want to stick around should he continue to find opportunities hard to come by. He has regularly been linked with top-flight rivals Crystal Palace. Just like Lacazatte, the young striker’s contract is up in the summer.

On the above evidence, it is easy to see why Arteta so badly needs a new forward at some point this year. It would be more beneficial to bring one in this month but that will prove a hard task.

Either way, the Spanish head coach must be buzzing over the thought of signing a new talisman to lead this promising Arsenal squad into the future.

AND in other news, Arsenal could secure Arteta’s perfect Vlahovic alternative in £45m-rated “phenomenon”…
