Leeds: Pundit reacts to Phillips injury

Former Premier League Golden Boot winner Kevin Phillips has been reacting to the news that Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips could miss two months through injury, as per Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Phillips’ hamstring injury

The 26-year-old had to be withdrawn against Brentford last weekend through injury, with Marcelo Bielsa unsure at the time in regards to the extent of the problem. The Telegraph provided an update a few days later, suggesting that the England international could miss up to two months out with a hamstring issue.

Leeds officially shared an update on the 26-year-old’s problem on Thursday, claiming that the midfielder has undergone treatment on the issue.

The Latest: Phillips injury is a ‘huge blow’

Phillips, who regularly features as a pundit on Sky Sports, was talking to Football Insider regarding the news on the Leeds midfielder.

This is what he had to say in reply, labelling The Telegraph’s update as a ‘huge blow’ to the player and his club:

“It’s a huge, huge blow.

“It’s been a tough season for Leeds so far. To lose arguably their most talented player at this point in the season will be devastating. He’s the heartbeat of their midfield.

“It’s been a bit of an up and down season for Kalvin so far, there were obviously the rumours of a rift between him and Bielsa which turned out to be false.

“Being out for two months at such a crucial time with these tough games coming up, it’s a massive blow. It could go wrong for Leeds.”

The Verdict: How will Bielsa deal without Phillips?

Phillips has been influential under Bielsa during his time at Elland Road, perfecting the defensive midfield role in a unique system.

He has turned out 107 times as a defensive midfielder during his career, and early indications are that the manager is more than happy to get imaginative when it comes to coping without the England international.

Leeds went with a 4-3-1-2 system in an impressive display against Chelsea at the weekend, with winger Jack Harrison occupying one of the three central midfield roles alongside Adam Forshaw and Jamie Shackleton.

Stuart Dallas, Mateusz Klich and Pascal Struijk are also options for Bielsa in that position in what could be an entertaining festive period as the Whites look to take points off the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Justamente o Flamengo é o próximo adversário do Vasco no Campeonato Brasileiro. No próximo sábado, o Cruz-Maltino encara o arquirrival no Maracanã.

Estamos encarando, colocando a bola no chão e produzindo.

Aston Villa: Villans make Manuel Lanzini enquiry

Aston Villa and Leeds have both approached West Ham over a possible move for Manuel Lanzini, according to TEAMtalk.

The Lowdown: Gerrard’s huge January kitty

Steven Gerrard looks set to be a busy man in the New Year in what will be his first transfer window as Villa boss.

A new centre-back and a defensive midfielder are reportedly his main priorities, with Marvelous Nakamba suffering a serious knee injury in recent weeks.

He’s been promised a huge transfer kitty by NSWE, and it appears as if attacking midfielder Lanzini is a player of interest to Gerrard and sporting director Johan Lange.

The Latest: Villa’s enquiry

TEAMtalk shared a story on Wednesday evening suggesting both Villa and Leeds made it clear to the Hammers they are keen on the Argentine.

West Ham were open to an exit earlier in the season, but they have rebuffed approaches regarding a January transfer involving Lanzini.

The 28-year-old, labelled as a ‘top player’ by Darren Bent, has made 20 appearances in all competitions this season, with his three league starts coming in the last three fixtures.

The Verdict: Priorities

Gerrard and Lange’s main focus should be on a holding midfielder in January, so their failed approach for Lanzini shouldn’t be viewed as a disaster at this moment in time.

The club have just Douglas Luiz as the only available senior defensive midfield option following Nakamba’s injury. Should they get one in early next month, then perhaps a move for an attacking midfielder could be of use, with Jacob Ramsey the club’s only out and out attacking midfielder.

However, Gerrard has plenty of wide attacking talent on the books who could adapt to a central role, but losing Luiz alongside Nakamba and not bringing in a replacement could be extremely worrying.

Pakistan send out SOS for Younis Khan

Pakistan’s failings with the bat in Melbourne have prompted the teammanagement to send out an SOS for Younis Khan

A final decision on Younis Khan could well depend on how Pakistan perform in Melbourne•AFP

Pakistan’s failings with the bat in Melbourne have prompted the teammanagement to send out an SOS for Younis Khan. The former captain, who haskept a low profile since he abruptly relinquished the leadership inNovember, is believed to be keen to respond and may even arrive in timefor the second Test in Sydney, due to begin on January 3.Pakistan were dismissed for 258 on an unusually docile MCG track, and onlyUmar Akmal and Misbah-ul-Haq batted with any authority against adisciplined and bustling Australian pace attack. That continued a run ofpoor performances in Younis’s absence on the New Zealand tour, wherePakistan relied heavily on Umar as they drew a three-Test series 1-1.But the team management has been keen on getting Younis over since before theMelbourne Test began. After the opening day at the MCG, they called upIqbal Qasim, Pakistan’s chief selector, and said they needed Younis. Sincethen it is believed there may have even been direct contact betweenMohammad Yousuf, the Pakistan captain, and Younis.”They have been very keen on getting Younis over and they called up IqbalQasim after the first day to make the request,” a board official toldCricinfo. “A request needs to be made in writing and the selectioncommittee will discuss and weigh up the pros and cons before the decisionis made.”Younis gave up the post after losing an ODI series to New Zealand in AbuDhabi, claiming that he had “lost command over his players.” It came aftermonths of reported unhappiness within the team over his leadership. Hewent underground immediately after, only to resurface suddenly whileattending a PCB coaching course in Lahore and then turning out, unimpressively, in the Quaid-e-Azam trophy final for Habib Bank.Subsequently there emerged a possibility that he may arrive in time for theODI series, but the frailty of Pakistan’s batting has apparently sped upthe process.Younis’ poor form – also a factor in his decision – remains a concern, however, and the selectors are keen for him to play at least one game ofthe local Pentangular tournament, which is due to begin on January 1,before he comes to Australia. Since making a triple-hundred on a lifelesstrack in Karachi in February, he has scored 131 runs in four Tests. His ODI form has also been wobbly. But his experience and track record at No.3 – a particularlytroublesome spot for Pakistan in recent Tests where they have tried fourdifferent batsmen in four Tests – is thought to be crucial in Australia. Not only was he Pakistan’s leading scorer in the last Test series here, heenjoyed a successful stint with South Australia last season.”Younis has been contacted and there is a chance that Yousuf has alsocontacted him directly,” said the official. “He has said that he is fitand ready to go, but will stand by whatever process the selectors put inplace for his return.”That process would appear to depend on how Pakistan ultimately fare inMelbourne. A loss could mean that there is a “70-80%” chance of Younismaking it in time for Sydney. If they somehow escape with a draw he couldarrive in time for the final Test in Hobart, having played at least onePentangular match in the interim. The call-up would also entail a currentmember of the squad returning to Pakistan, and it could possibly be one of thefast bowlers.A final decision could also be taken as early as tomorrow, depending onthe situation of the Test.

Phil Hay reveals Leeds’ transfer "priority"

Leeds United could target a new central midfielder this January transfer window, according to the ever-reliable Phil Hay of The Athletic…

What’s the word?

In a recent transfer Q&A with supporters, the trusty reporter claimed that we could see the Yorkshire giants finally sign the midfielder they have been desperate for in recent times.

“We could all see that recruitment in central midfield was necessary in the last window and Leeds would have taken someone there had Conor Gallagher agreed to come from [Chelsea] or Lewis O’Brien not been priced as he was,” he said.

“To my mind, failing to add a midfielder was a mistake and it looks like the priority the club need to focus on in the coming window. You can go back to the interest in Michael Cuisance to see how long they’ve actually been after a player in that area.”

Bucking the trend

This should come as huge excitement for many supporters around Elland Road – and not just because they could bring in some fresh faces to bolster their chances of staying in the Premier League.

Indeed, the Whites find themselves just five points above the relegation zone, having played several more games than those sides below them.

United boss Marcelo Bielsa has been dealing with an injury crisis for the bulk of the season but in recent times that has got excruciatingly worse, with as many as 11 players, including nine first-team stars, absent from their recent 4-1 defeat to Arsenal.

It suggests that reinforcements will certainly be needed in the window.

But typically, Leeds never spend in January, so they would need to buck the trend if they are to resolve this ongoing nightmare.

Hay also believes that is something they could do.

“Victor Orta and Bielsa don’t like to be overly active in January but you’ll have noticed Bielsa saying a couple of weeks ago that signings would be good if Leeds can find a way to make them happen — provided they are fit enough to step straight in,” he said in response to another question.

If that’s the case, then those around west Yorkshire should be hugely encouraged heading into January. Their fortunes could well be boosted heading into the remainder of the season.

O desabafo de Neto rapidamente viralizou na internet e virou até paródia com as músicas “Twist And Shout”, dos Beatles, e “Killing in the name”, do Rage Against The Machine (veja no fim desta matéria).

Aposto lanche e vestir a camisa. Nada exagerado.

Estava me desgastando à toa. Vou ser feliz com a minha família.
