Southampton handed James Ward-Prowse boost

With the return of the Premier League this weekend, Southampton make the trip to face Norwich City at Carrow Road on Saturday to see if they can continue their solid run of form from before the international break.

During the break, there were some concerns over the fitness of certain Saints players and whether or not they would be able to take part against the Canaries, who are currently sitting at the bottom of the league table with just five points on the board from 11 games.

Fortunately for Southampton, it seems as though one of their key players will be available for the clash.

What’s the news?

After being forced to drop out of the England squad at the start of the international break through illness, it has been revealed by Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl that club captain James Ward-Prowse will be available to play against Norwich after recovering from a bug rather than anything serious.

Given how Ward-Prowse has started nine out of Southampton’s 11 league games so far this season and scored two goals in the process, this shows how important he is to Hasenhuttl and the team.

As well as the number of appearances he’s made this season, the midfielder has also shown just how useful he is with his performances in an attacking and defensive sense.

In the Premier League, Ward-Prowse has racked up an average of 1.2 shots and 1.7 key passes per game, showing that he is a big part of Southampton’s attacking force. Indeed, only Nathan Redmond can better the captain’s average for the latter metric among Hasenhuttl’s squad.

The 27-year-old skipper, who is currently valued at £28.8m by Transfermarkt, has also shown that he isn’t one to ignore his defensive duties, with an average of 1.2 tackles and 1.1 clearances per game this season.

With this in mind, it’s safe to say that Southampton fans will be buzzing to hear that Ward-Prowse will be available to play against Norwich this weekend.

Taking into account that Norwich have only won one game all season, scoring fewer goals (five) and conceding more (26) than any other side in the Premier League, this could be a great opportunity for Southampton to pick up another victory after winning three of their four previous matches prior to the November international break.

Southampton must sign Lingard

With 12 Premier League games played so far this season, Southampton have only managed to score 11 goals in those games, leaving only Norwich City having scored fewer with seven, which suggests that Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side have not been in the best-attacking form.

One former Southampton player that proved himself to be a useful attacking outlet for the team was Adam Lallana, who managed to score a total of 60 goals and provide 48 assists in 265 games before leaving for Liverpool in the summer of 2014.

With recent reports linking Manchester United attacking-midfielder Jesse Lingard with a move to St. Mary’s during the upcoming January transfer window, this could provide Southampton with a fantastic opportunity to sign an almost like-for-like replacement for Lallana as an attack-minded midfield option that can create and score goals.

As a product of United’s youth system, Lingard has made a total of 219 appearances for the Red Devils across all competitions, scoring 35 goals and providing 21 assists in the process.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-southampton-news” title=”Check out the latest Southampton news!”]

During his loan spell with West Ham United last season, the 28-year-old, who is currently valued at £19.8m according to Transfermarkt, managed to score nine goals and provide five assists in just 16 games for the Hammers, helping them secure a place in the Europa League. That shows how much of an attacking impact he can have on a team given the chance to play regularly, which he hasn’t been this season.

With this in mind, it would be a great signing for Southampton if they were able to bring Lingard, who has a total of 29 goals and 17 assists in the Premier League under his belt, to St. Mary’s in January and he manages to have a similar impact there as he did at West Ham.

Given Southampton’s lack of goals this term, it appears as though they could do with adding a fresh attacking option, such as Lingard, who has been described as “immense” by England manager Gareth Southgate, to their side so they don’t end up getting dragged into a potential relegation battle if they aren’t able to win enough games. In the process, they might just find their next Lallana too.

Collingwood faces planning challenge

Paul Collingwood has admitted it is a challenge to try and mould a Twenty20 side ahead of the next global tournament in the Caribbean with so few matches played at international level

Paul Collingwood has admitted it is a challenge to try and mould a Twenty20 side ahead of the next global tournament in the Caribbean with so few matches played at international level. The World Twenty20 will take place in April and May 2010, but although that is eight months away England have precious few games to hone their skills and put together a unit. After the second of two matches against Australia at Old Trafford on Tuesday, their next Twenty20s aren’t until the beginning of their South Africa tour in November. No more are currently confirmed before heading to West Indies, although the schedule for the Bangladesh tour in February has yet to be confirmed. Some of England’s players may be able to warm up at the IPL, which has been brought forward to March and April, but that doesn’t help Collingwood build team plans in the shortest format.”We’ve only got four or five games before the Twenty20 World Cup so it’s a tough one to keep chopping and changing,” Collingwood said. “We don’t play enough cricket to actually get something cemented down and in place. Hopefully we will have the attitude that players will get a good go in certain positions. But I thought the side [against Australia] looked very balanced on paper, I’m not saying that will be the side that takes us into the World Cup but it does look very balanced.”There is also uncertainty over Collingwood’s position as captain. Currently he is being appointed on a series-by-series basis with Andrew Strauss having decided he isn’t suited to Twenty20. Collingwood insists he is happy in his position and is planning as though he will lead the side in West Indies.”I’m pretty clear on my role. I was captain for the World Twenty20 and I’ve been selected as captain for the two Twenty20s against Australia,” he said. “So until I’m told otherwise, I want to lead England into the next Twenty20 World Cup. I’m happy with that arrangement – and unless someone tells me otherwise, I look forward to my job captaining the side.”England have been guilty of making numerous changes to their Twenty20 team, including 13 opening partnerships in 21 matches with the latest being Joe Denly and Ravi Bopara at Old Trafford. For the World Twenty20 in England this summer Luke Wright opened and started well before fading later in the event but now finds himself at No. 7. Collingwood feels that Wright’s strong hitting ability will be better suited down the order, where England were severely lacking in the previous tournament and struggled to find the boundary in the closing overs.”We came out of the World Twenty20 and looked at areas we could strengthen and one was the middle order,” he said. “We are trying to have some bigger hitters at the back end of the innings so dropping Wrighty down we think we have that. Obviously with Denly’s and [Jonathan] Trott’s records in domestic Twenty20 it doesn’t get much better than what they are doing.”It was far from an ideal start for England’s latest pair, however, as they were both dismissed in the first seven balls of the innings before rain ended the contest. With Australia possessing the pace attack of Brett Lee, Mitchell Johnson and Dirk Nannes, Collingwood is aware that the top order will have to be at their best to repel them.”That’s something we’re going to have to overcome, the pace they have in their side,” he said. “They have three 90mph bowlers and that’s something we are going to have to deal with, but I think we have the batsman to overcome that.”David Warner, Australia’s opening batsman, has warned that it won’t get any easier for England in the second Twenty20 encounter and throughout the remainder of the season. “We’ll be targeting them from short of a length as we saw yesterday [on Sunday],” he said. “Binga [Lee] and Mitch are bowling quick and England can expect more of that.”

ICC looking at four 25-over innings in ODIs

ICC cricket manager Dave Richardson believes the move could breathe life into the limited-overs format

Cricinfo staff11-Sep-2009

Dave Richardson: “I quite like that idea…it provides something different and reduces the effects on the team who loses the toss and has to bat first on a damp wicket, for example.”•AFP

The ICC is considering a trial splitting of one-day matches into two innings of 25 overs for each team, Dave Richardson, the ICC’s cricket manager, has said. The idea was mooted by Sachin Tendulkar last week.”I quite like that idea, I believe South Africa may trial something along those lines,” Richardson told . “This might work in day-night cricket where one team has to bat in day and the other at night. It provides something different and reduces the effects on the team who loses the toss and has to bat first on a damp wicket, for example.”Richardson believed the concept, discussed during the ICC’s cricket committee annual meeting at Lord’s in May, could breathe life into the 50-over format, which has been increasingly threatened by the rise in popularity of Twenty20 cricket.Though two innings of 25 overs could lead to new strategies and even reduce the influence of winning the toss in favourable conditions, Richardson was eager to prevent results becoming predictable. His concern was that splitting the innings could take away scoring opportunities for the batsmen.”I don’t necessarily like the idea of playing two matches of 25 overs each with the openers batting again,” he said. “The charm of one-day cricket is seeing someone batting at four and scoring a good hundred. If you bat in the middle order of a Twenty20 or a new 25-over innings, you’re not to get much of an opportunity to hit three figures, one downside of the Twenty20 game.”The clamour for a fresh approach to the one-day game has grown considerably with players including Tendulkar 50-over games be played over two innings to provide similar overhead conditions for both teams. Tendulkar said the contests were becoming too predictable because results of “close to 75% of matches” could be predicted after the toss. The England and Wales Cricket Board recently agreed to scrap the domestic Friends Provident Trophy, the only 50-over domestic cricket tournament, in favour of an expanded Twenty20 competition along with a 40-over format. Cricket South Africa are also likely to join the bandwagon as it considers changes to its 45-over competition. However, Richardson said the experiment would have to be successful at the domestic level before changes could be made to the international game. “The bottomline is if we can come up with a product that is better than the existing one, then everyone would like to look at it,” he said. “If it has been trialled successfully at domestic level, it may give the trial to give it the go-ahead at international level.”The ICC has been proactive with ideas and innovations, like the powerplays. The idea of the ‘super-sub’ (scrapped in March 2006) wasn’t as successful and got rid of quite quickly. One of the criticisms was that we trialled things at international as opposed to domestic level. Our tactics going forward are member countries trial changes first domestically and if they are successful, then we can take them on board at the international level.”The ICC’s cricket committee is set to meet again in 2010 when the results of the experiment will be discussed.

Isco: Leeds eye new Pablo Hernandez

Leeds United could find themselves a new Pablo Hernandez amid emerging transfer reports…

What’s the word?

According to The Sunday People [November 21st, page 57], the Yorkshire giants are one of two Premier League clubs to have sounded out a move for Real Madrid outcast Isco ahead of the January transfer window.

The 29-year-old is out of contract in the summer and the La Liga outfit are resigned to losing him, but they would rather garner some sort of fee for him this winter, instead of him leaving for nothing at the end of the season.

West Ham are the other club to be contracted, as per the report, and as little as £4m could be enough to sign him permanently, though he is thought to be on wages of around £123k-per-week, which currently eclipses any player at Elland Road.

Pablo Hernandez 2.0

With this move, Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa and director of football Victor Orta could be looking to replicate the signing of Pablo Hernandez, who swapped life in Spain and Qatar for west Yorkshire in the twilight years of his career.

Indeed, he initially joined on loan in 2015/16 at the age of 30 and stayed for five seasons, where he amassed 175 appearances and provided 36 goals and 41 assists, via Transfermarkt.

His guile and experience in the final third is arguably something that Bielsa is missing right now, having averaged just one goal per game in the Premier League this term. Granted, Patrick Bamford’s injury hasn’t helped matters, but it can’t help to further support him upon his return.

Isco may be regarded as a flop at the Bernabeu in some quarters but he could still offer plenty to a team like Leeds, who are sitting perilously above the relegation zone.

In more than 340 appearances for Los Galacticos, the £13.5m-rated Spaniard has contributed 52 goals and 56 assists, on his way to four Champions League triumphs and two LaLiga titles, as per Transfermarkt.

The 38-cap Spain international was was dubbed an “incredible talent” by a former arch-rival in Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta, whilst an average of 1.9 key passes last term and two key passes per 90 this term, via WhoScored, suggests that he can still be a hugely creative influence.

Orta and co could well sign Bielsa’s next Hernandez with a bold swoop for Isco in January.
