Katich and Ponting take control with tons

Ricky Ponting continued his prolific Ashes record with his 38th Test century, passing 11,000 runs in the process, while Simon Katich continued his rebirth as an opener with his first ton against England

Australia’s bowling has lost its aura in recent times, but the batting order remains a powerful line-up led by one of the greatest to play the game. Ricky Ponting continued his prolific Ashes record with his 38th Test century, passing 11,000 runs in the process, while Simon Katich continued his rebirth as an opener with his first ton against England to lead Australia to an impressive 249 for 1 in reply to the home side’s 435 on the second day in Cardiff. If it was honours even at the end of the opening exchanges, it is now Australia who hold the advantage and will have designs on batting well past England’s total to remove the danger of batting last. It was quite a turnaround for the tourists, who were given the run-around during the first session with England adding 99 in 16.5 overs of sparkling batting from the lower order, in particular Graeme Swann. However, Australia’s progress from the moment Ponting and Katich joined forces was methodical, attritional and thoroughly professional as they added 189. It was a lesson to England’s batsmen who, despite collectively managing a very respectable total, individually wasted numerous starts. The pitch held few demons for batsmen who were set, which highlighted the value of Australia’s two top-order players building on their foundations.Katich could have departed for 10 when Andrew Flintoff, in the middle of a hostile spell that accounted for Phillip Hughes, couldn’t hold a low return chance but Ponting didn’t offer a chance in his 155-ball hundred that arrived off the penultimate ball of the day. Katich had brought up his own century moments earlier from 214 balls when he pulled Flintoff to fine leg. He is far removed from the batsman who was bemused by reverse swing in 2005 and it’s one of cricket’s great comeback stories.Ponting already has a record that stands up with the legends and became the fourth batsman to pass 11,000 Test runs when he moved to 41, joining Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara and Allan Border with enough time in his career to finish top of the pile. His hundred also gave him centuries in four Ashes series in England, alongside Don Bradman and Steve Waugh.Prime Numbers8 The number of centuries Ricky Ponting has scored against England. Only six batsmen have scored more hundreds in Ashes contests. 50.68 Ponting’s average against England, at the end of the second day’s play. The only country against whom he averages less than 50 is India (47.02).48.07 The average partnership between Ponting and Simon Katich. It’s their fifth century stand, and the highest, in 28 innings. 57.42 Katich’s Test average in the last 14 months. In 29 innings he has scored six centuries and seven fifties.31.49 Katich’s strike rate against Graeme Swann and Monty Panesar in his unbeaten 104. Against the fast bowlers his strike rate was 69.56. And he’ll have his mind set on doubling this innings before he’s finished on a surface that may yet make the fourth innings a testing proposition. There was turn for Swann and Monty Panesar, especially from the footmarks, but it was slow and the batsmen had time to adjust. Katich often waited on the back foot to clip Panesar with the spin through the leg side, while Ponting cashed in whenever Swann over pitched. Swann sent down six maidens in his first 11 overs, ripped a couple past Katich’s outside edge and could have had him leg before on 56, but when he started to force the issue there were more loose deliveries to be picked off.Andrew Strauss tried various combinations, but found it difficult to build pressure as the batsmen found release through well-run singles and deft placement. James Anderson wasn’t at his best while Stuart Broad was forced to leave the field for some treatment on his calf during the final session. As Ravi Bopara found yesterday success against a poor West Indies team needs to be put into context. It was no surprise that the most hostile pace force was Flintoff, playing his first Test since Antigua in February, and as with his brief innings his first spell rekindled memories of Ashes contests past. He’d been held back from the attack during the half hour Australia batted before lunch and Hughes raced into his innings with a series of crisp off-side boundaries. There was a plan to target Hughes with the short ball, but both Anderson and Broad offered too much width and allowed Hughes to free his arms. After the interval, though, the challenge went up a few levels as Flintoff was immediately thrown the ball. He began with three rapid bouncers to Hughes from around the wicket, probing the middle-and-leg line that Steve Harmison utilised for England Lions, throwing in a few verbals for good measure, then beat the left-hander with one that cut away off the seam.It was a marvellous duel between a seasoned campaigner and a young, cocky batsman with Flintoff coming out on top. Switching to over the wicket he cramped Hughes for room as he tried another cut and Matt Prior held a sharp, low chance to his right as Flintoff stood in the middle of the pitch, arms aloft in celebration but it proved England’s only moment of joy.Australia began the day hoping to restrict England to well below 400 and that looked on the cards when Mitchell Johnson removed Broad with the aid of some thigh pad. However, Swann was immediately at his busy, cheeky best and the fifty stand with Anderson came up off 38 balls. The introduction of Nathan Hauritz brought even greater acceleration as Swann immediately made a statement against his fellow offspinner. He lofted him over wide mid-on then slammed him straight down the ground for another boundary as Peter Siddle lost sight of the ball on the rope. The best of the lot, however, was his impish reverse sweep to complete an over that left the crowd in raptures. By the close, though, the English fans were more subdued and it was the Australians waving their flags.

Gardner-Hickman impressed against Hull

With Valerien Ismael’s West Bromwich Albion side heading into Wednesday evening’s Championship clash on the back of a rather resounding 3-0 defeat last time out, the Frenchman will have undoubtedly been hoping for a more positive result when Hull City visited The Hawthorns.

And, while the Baggies’ overall performance left a lot to be desired, Karlan Grant’s fourth goal in five games was enough to ensure that the 46-year-old’s side ran out 1-0 victors against the Tigers – a result which saw West Brom keep the pace with Fulham in the race for second.

However, while the spectacle may not have been overly enjoyable for the Albion fans in attendance, there was one positive to come out of the fixture – the performance of Taylor Gardner-Hickman on his league debut for the club.

Lost possession 18 times

With Darnell Furlong missing Wednesday evening’s fixture as a result of his red card against Fulham last weekend, Ismael placed his trust in the 19-year-old to fill in at right wing-back, and the youngster certainly did not disappoint.

Indeed, over his 90 minutes on the pitch, Gardner-Hickman enjoyed 66 touches of the ball – the joint third-most of any player to feature in the match – completed 24 passes, made one key pass and attempted six crosses and five long balls.

The right-back’s attempts to make things happen for his side was further highlighted by the fact he lost possession of the ball on 18 separate occasions – something that is usually viewed as a negative statistic.

However, when considering that Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold lost the ball 16 times against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night, a fixture in which the right-back created two big chances and ended the game with two assists to his name, it is clear to see that the lost possession statistic can also reflect how creative a player is attempting to be for his side.

Although, it was not only going forwards that Gardner-Hickman impressed, with the teenager also helping his side keep a clean sheet, in addition to making one clearance, two tackles and winning six duels against the Tigers.

These returns saw the man who Sam Allardyce suggested could become an “important” player for the Baggies earn a very respectable SofaScore match rating of 7.0 – not bad for the first league start of his career.

As such, while Furlong will likely return to his starting berth when Middlesbrough visit The Hawthorns on Saturday, Gardner-Hickman undoubtedly proved against Hull that he is more than capable of stepping up for his side when required – something that will delight Valerien Ismael.

Hinds puts players' views in contract dispute

Former West Indies international Wavell Hinds has added his voice to those critical of the way the West Indies board has handled dealings with its players

Flabbergasted: Wavell Hinds is at a loss to understand the WICB’s stance•Hamish Blair/Getty Images

Former West Indies international Wavell Hinds has added his voice to those critical of the way the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has handled dealings with its players.”I am very disappointed in the statements I have seen coming from the WICB which certainly do not represent the issues as I know them to be,” Hinds, who is currently playing for Derbyshire, said. “They’ve attempted to paint our players in a particular light while I know that there are a number of fundamental issues that the WICB have failed to address repeatedly that go to the core of any contractual relationship.”I cannot sit idly by and not comment when there seems to be a great deal of misinformation in the public domain. Fortunately the public knows how the WICB has conducted its affairs and should be in a position to judge if and when all the facts are available to them and the public knows who has been most transparent on this issue.””I am seeing the WICB’s position and I am flabbergasted since … I sat for almost 14 hours and arrived at an agreement on Retainer Contracts, Fees for First Class Cricketers and Injury Payments among other things on April 2 in St. Lucia. I am at a loss to understand the WICB’s current stance on its agreements with the West Indies Players’ Association.”While many people have supported the stand taken by the players, there are some who seem to believe that the players should accept this kind of treatment. However, I wish to make it abundantly clear that all persons should be treated with respect and that is what our players want.Hinds said that despite being in England, he had followed events closely and believed there was solidarity among the players. “How much do [the WICB] really care about the players who represent the West Indies team? Do they care about the public, the sponsors and key stakeholders or is there something else that we should know about?”When the first-class players did not take the field earlier this year, many were kicked out of their hotels but I note that the WICB has seen it fit to finance full page ads in many newspapers. Is this a statement on their priorities? They need to answer those questions and a number of others. The WICB needs to be accountable and transparent and to honour their agreements with the players. The players have had enough.Hinds explained his belief that the WICB’s claim the players were in breach of agreements “would do very little to improve the relationship between board and players”. He continued: “This approach by the WICB may be taken as very confrontational. I can say without fear of contradiction that WIPA stands ready and willing to negotiate with the WICB to resolving all of the outstanding issues but will not be bullied in anyway by the WICB.”

Newcastle transfer news on Dean Henderson

Newcastle United are reportedly now an option for Dean Henderson in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Fallen away

The 24-year-old has fallen away a little bit since his remarkable loan spell at Sheffield United, where he managed to keep 13 clean sheets and conceded just 33 goals in the 2019/20 Premier League as the Blades finished a respectable ninth for a newly-promoted team (Sky Sports).

St James’ Park legend Alan Shearer included him in his Premier League Team of the Season so far back in April 2020, even going as far as to claim that the ‘keeper is a ‘star in the making’ (Yorkshire Live).

However, Henderson has been used sporadically by Manchester United ever since his return, with just one game played so far this season (one year on from his senior debut under Gareth Southgate.

The Latest: Newcastle option

As per The Daily Mail, Newcastle are now understood to be ‘one of the options’ for Henderson in January, as he reportedly wants to leave the Red Devils at the end of the campaign if he cannot nudge David de Gea out of the number one spot between the posts.

The goalkeeper ‘would consider’ leaving in the winter window, but it is ‘unlikely’ that the Old Trafford club would allow him to depart midway through the season.

The Verdict: Do not prioritise

There is no doubt that Henderson could be a good option for the Magpies, as he will be hungry to rekindle his career and get back into the England squad, with former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho citing an ‘arrogance’ in him back in June.

Nonetheless, at 24 years of age, Henderson has the potential to be Newcastle’s main goalkeeper for years to come, providing that they can agree a reasonable transfer fee.

However, the Tyneside outfit already have Martin Dubravka, Karl Darlow and Freddie Woodman at their disposal, so signing another ‘keeper should not be a priority, unless one or more of their current options were to leave.

Especial 2007: LANCE! lembra montagem do 'Carrossel Alvinegro'

A primeira, sobre a montagem daquele time.

Na virada do ano, o agente do Jorge me liga.

O Leandro Guerreiro chegou do Criciúma.

O ELENCO:
Goleiros: Max, Lopes, Júlio César, Marcos Leandro e Roger
Laterais: Flávio, Joilson, Sepetiba, Alessandro, Iran, Xavier, Luciano Almeida, Moreno e Athirson
Zagueiros: Juninho, Alex, Asprilla, Rogério Corrêa, Vágner, Renato Silva e Rafael
Volantes: Túlio, Leandro Guerreiro, Diguinho, Juca, Edson Júnior, Coutinho e Alberoni
Meias: Lucio Flavio, Zé Roberto, Ricardinho, Thiago Marín, Magno, Jougle, Adirano Felício e Marquinho
Atacantes: Jorge Henrique, Dodô, Luís Mário, André Lima, Gláucio, Vitor Castro e Reinaldo

ICC panel meets on Wednesday over doping impasse

The meeting will set the parameters for the group to work on a solution and fix a date and time for it to meet

Cricinfo staff12-Aug-2009The ICC will hold a teleconference on Wednesday night of its working group on the contentious ‘whereabouts’ clause of the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) code, which Indian players have refused to sign. The meeting will set the parameters for the group to work on a solution and fix a date and time for it to meet. The group will be introduced to the issue at hand and there could possibly be a preliminary discussion on the way forward. The International Registered Testing Pool (IRTP) working group is chaired by Tim Kerr, chairman of ICC anti-doping panel, and also includes ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat, BCCI secretary N Srinivasan, ICC principal advisor IS Bindra and former India captain Anil Kumble, who sits on WADA’s Athletes Committee. The 11 Indian players in the ICC’s testing pool have raised concerns about the clause, which requires them to inform the ICC, at the beginning of every quarter (three-month period), of a location and time they will be available for an hour each day for testing. The BCCI and the players were worried about security risks involved in providing ‘whereabouts’ information in advance and have also said that the clause is a violation of privacy statutes. The BCCI and the Indian players have faced criticism for their decision to not abide by the WADA code, because cricketers from all other countries in the testing pool and India’s top athletes have accepted the anti-doping regulations. One of the BCCI’s suggestions for solving the problem was to introduce a new cricket-specific code.
