Everton injury news on Richarlison

Many Everton fans have been left buzzing as some news emerged involving Richarlison.

The Goodison Park faithful tweeted a few images of the former Watford ace, confirming he is ‘back in full training’, in what has of course come as a mighty relief to a lot of Merseyside club supporters.

Given that Rafa Benitez has been dealt a double blow with the latest injury news on both Abdoulaye Doucoure and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, it is certainly positive to hear of Richarlison’s return.

The Brazil international has been such a not yet scored for his new club.

Dominant Deccan thrash Rajasthan

Smart team changes by the Deccan Chargers and a spineless batting display by the Rajasthan Royals contributed to a mismatch in Kimberley

Smart team changes by the Deccan Chargers and a spineless batting display by the Rajasthan Royals contributed to a mismatch in Kimberley. Deccan dropped two under-performing overseas players but their replacements – Dwayne Smith and Chaminda Vaas – contributed significantly in shaping a comprehensive 53-run win. Smith slammed 47 to help Deccan surge to a competitive total while Vaas took two early wickets before Rajasthan’s middle order imploded.Rajasthan were in the game for the first 15 overs. Then Smith walked in and, first, negated the effect of the spinners, who till had the batsmen on a tight leash. He smashed four sixes in his 32-ball 47 and pushed Deccan to a score that was sure to test an unpredictable opposition. The chase lacked fight and the loss cost Rajasthan their No.3 spot.Rajasthan’s slide began in the second over of their chase, when Graeme Smith was trapped lbw by Chaminda Vaas. Replays showed the ball hitting Smith high above the knee roll but it evened out for both teams as Adam Gilchrist was also given out in doubtful circumstances. While Smith had the right to blame fate for his dismissal, Lee Carseldine had only himself to blame for his departure. Distracted by an lbw appeal off Vaas, he accidentally strolled out of his crease and failed to notice that Gilchrist was in possession of the ball during the appeal to effect the stumping.Naman Ojha hit two fours before he misjudged a single towards point. Dropping the ball towards the fielder, he set off for the run but Ravi Teja’s arm was too quick for him as he threw down the stumps with a direct hit.Swapnil Asnodkar resisted at the other end and tried to break free by making a lot of room to loft inside out. Rajasthan needed somebody to support Asnodkar and play a role similar to Smith’s but their most valuable player in the middle order, Yusuf Pathan, let them down. He slapped Pragyan Ojha straight to long-off and at 74 for 4 in the 12th over, the wheels had effectively come off.Prime Numbers10 Number of wickets that part-time offspinner Rohit Sharma has in the tournament164.61 Dwayne Smith’s strike-rate, the best among batsmen scoring more than 200 runs53 Biggest margin of victory in terms of runs for Deccan8Number of batsmen with more than ten sixesRohit Sharma picked up three wickets with his offspin, by which time Rajasthan had run out of resources and ideas to script a twist in the tale.In a tournament dominated by spinners, Rajasthan’s spin duo of Yusuf and Ravindra Jadeja had their share of success early on. Yusuf took 3 for 34 while his partner Jadeja took 2 for 26 by cleverly varying his pace. Jadeja struck with two wickets on either side of the strategy break to peg Deccan back. He drew Rohit forward with a flighted delivery and had him stumped and in his following over, flattened Symonds’ legstump with a quicker delivery. Symonds had earlier threatened to push on to his second consecutive fifty when he took on his old IPL rival Warne, pulling the bowler over midwicket before mowing him high over long-on.They controlled the scoring before Smith cut loose. Smith got off to a quiet start by his standards, scoring 14 off 19 balls before opening out. He lofted Jadeja over long-on, clubbed Pathan over square leg and flicked Trivedi delightfully over deep midwicket without much of a follow through. Warne gambled by bringing himself on in the 19th over and he too suffered at the hands of Smith as he swung him over long-on.Smith departed in the final over for 47 and thanks to his big hits, Deccan managed 69 off the last six overs and negated the impact the spinners had made earlier. He came in as a replacement for the out-of-form Herschelle Gibbs and it proved to be a masterstroke.

We have "moved on" after Lahore – Sangakkara

Kumar Sangakkara believes his team is mentally prepared to return to international cricket after the Lahore bus attack

Sangakkara: “It is great to be back playing cricket and hope we can make a challenge in the World Twenty20″•AFP

Kumar Sangakkara, the Sri Lankan captain, believes his team is now mentally prepared to return to international cricket following the Lahore bus attack on March 3, but admitted that some apprehensions still remain, as shown by the recent decision to withdraw – along with Muttiah Muralitharan and manager Brendon Kuruppu – from a speaking engagement in Oxford due to security fears.”Returning to cricket is the sign of normalcy for us, getting back to our normal lives,” Sangakkara told Cricinfo. “The guys have moved on very well from Lahore. It is great to be back playing cricket and hope we can make a challenge in the World Twenty20. The side is really looking forward to doing well.”Sangakkara was one of the seven players injured in the attacks after terrorists fired and hurled grenades at the Sri Lankan team bus as it made its way to the Gadaffi Stadium on the third day of the second Test against Pakistan. The team had its first practice nets at Lord’s on Saturday afternoon and the players seemed happy to be back in action. “We remember the Lahore attack. There is a lot of emotion tied up with it, but we’ve got to move on,” Sangakkara said. “Life moves on, cricket goes on. The guys have realised that and they are prepared mentally now.”Even if Sangakkara was happy with the security arrangements put in place by the ICC for the event, the aftermath of Sri Lanka’s victory over the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) – which brought to an end to a 26-year-old civil war – has brought with it new concerns.Sangakkara said they had been alerted to the perceived security risks and players had been asked to keep the management informed of their movements. On Friday, he and Muralitharan were supposed to take part in a debate organised by the Oxford University Union but the visit was cancelled at the last minute as the organisers failed to put the required security arrangements in place.”Our movements are a bit restricted at the moment but the security people have allowed us to keep our focus on the game,” Sangakkara said.Asked what the mood was like before the team boarded the bus for the first time after Lahore, Sangakkara said it was full of optimism and the usual banter. “Getting back together, going on a bus you know sometimes you look around and you feel how vulnerable you are in the bus if anyone wants to do any harm. At the same time it is great to get back on it as a team and play your first major tournament after Lahore. That feeling of togetherness, being through tough situations, and playing the game we love brings us a lot closer together.”Cricketers love routines and are superstitious when it comes to matters such as sitting on a particular seat. The Sri Lankans are no different. “Everyone just fell into their places. Lots of players have seats they are really fond of: Sanath [Jayasuriya] always sits on the right three to four rows from the front and Mahela [Jayawardene] likes to sit at the back. So the guys are back in their usual positions. Life is back to normal.”Quite a few of the players, including Sangakkara, Muralitharan, Jayawardene, Jayasuriya, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Lasith Malinga and Farveez Maharoof played during the IPL in South Africa and are expected to carry the momentum into England. “We are trying to play on our unpredictability and our unorthodox make-up and hopefully be able to come up with the unexpected and surprising,” Sangakkara said.Unlike teams like India and Pakistan, who have landed relatively easy groups, Sri Lanka are paired with Australia and West Indies. Sangakkara is aware of the threat but is confident his team can make the second round as long as the batsmen can construct formidable scores for his in-form bowlers to defend.”We start off in a very tough group so we need to win at least one, if not both of our opening games,” he said. “We have got probably one of the best bowling attacks, but we’ve just got to make sure our batting complements that and gets totals we can defend. Guys like Jayasuriya, Dilshan and Mahela are in good form and can win games on their own, so it is going to be a good experience. It is also a good way to judge how far we need to go before becoming a force in Twenty20 cricket. We’ve got the depth in both bowling and batting.”Sangakkara has also put the onus on his young allrounders Maharoof and Angelo Mathews to perform and make an impact in the lower-middle order, which Sangakkara feels is the team’s Achilles heel. “Angelo Mathews and Farveez Maharoof will have to take that responsibility of making that difference,” he said. “We have lot more strengths than weaknesses.”

Spurs: Moura disasterclass vs West Ham

Lucas Moura offered very little as Tottenham Hotspur were narrowly beaten by West Ham United at the London Stadium in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

Spurs may have been defeated by the solitary goal against their London rivals but truth be told, they rarely ever threatened in the final third and the Brazilian winger being a complete non-factor certainly contributed to their downfall.

The £18m-rated dynamo leads the way for dribbles per game (2.9) and isn’t far behind for shots at goal (1.8) or key passes (one) per game either, so he’s clearly a big influence in Nuno Santo’s system in N17.

But against the Irons, he was completely ineffective and quite anonymous for large parts. When he did have the ball, he was wasteful, so it was certainly a nightmare of an afternoon for the 29-year-old attacker.

Moura lost possession a whopping 25 times, which was more than any other player on the pitch, and five more times than anyone else in a Lilywhites shirt.

When you consider the fact that he had 67 touches across 89 minutes, then it’s a worrying sign as he handed the ball back to the home side once every 2.7 touches – or once every 3.5 minutes, via SofaScore.

Elsewhere, he registered just one shot, which was off target, and only recorded three successful dribbles from six attempts, meaning the Hammers’ defence often had the better of him.

That was further reinforced by the former PSG star winning only eight of 16 duels (50%), both on the ground and aerially, the latter is another statistic he leads the squad in (3.6x per game), surprisingly. So again, he was performing well below his standard in east London.

The Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick claimed he ‘offered little in the final third and was well marshalled by West Ham,’ whilst football.london reporter Rob Guest handed him a 4/10 rating – amongst the lowest in the whole side.

On the above evidence, Moura was a disaster against the Irons and even though he was one of many, he was one reason why Spurs failed to register a single shot in the second half.

Yardy and Goodwin lead Sussex to semis

Murray Goodwin lived up his reputation as one of the best limited-overs batsman in the country and Michael Yardy played a captain’s innings to steer Sussex into the Friends Provident semi-finals

Andrew McGlashan23-May-2009
ScorecardMurray Goodwin lived up to his reputation as one of the best limited-overs batsmen in the country and Michael Yardy played a captain’s innings to steer Sussex into the Friends Provident semi-finals. Somerset recovered well from a troubled start with Craig Kieswetter hitting a superb century, but a target of 286 is not so daunting at Taunton and Sussex paced their chase to perfection.Whenever the required rate climbed to touch eight an over Sussex found the acceleration needed, while Somerset struggled with a lack of wicket-taking bowlers. The key partnership was between Goodwin and Yardy, who added 89 the fourth wicket with some textbook one-day batting. Neither batsman panicked and they picked off crucial boundaries to ease the pressure. The Somerset bowlers slipped at vital moments and victory came with five balls to spare. The chase got off to a poor start when Joe Gatting edged behind for a duck in the opening over, but early nerves were settled by Ed Joyce and Chris Nash who added 74 to set a platform. Nash gave away his innings with a slog across the line against Alfonso Thomas, but Joyce continued to accumulate steadily with Goodwin for company.Somerset managed to create some pressure during the middle overs as Omari Banks proved difficult to score off and Charl Willoughby produced a tight spell. Joyce got a leading edge back to Banks, but Yardy was so eager for the challenge that he was in the middle before Joyce had made it off the pitch. The Sussex captain middled everything from the start and was quickly scoring at more than run-a-ball to take the pressure off Goodwin. The pick of Yardy’s shots were when he went inside out over extra cover. Goodwin appeared to be guiding the chase home with a century in sight but played across the line at Peter Trego to give Somerset a sniff. But those hopes evaporated when Rory Hamilton-Brown was dropped by Zander de Bruyn, running in from deep cover, and Yardy went to his deserved half-century off 40 balls with a thumping drive. Hamilton-Brown crunched a boundary off the last ball of the 49th over to leave Sussex needing just two from the final over, which Yardy sealed with a single blow.Sussex began the day in fine style when Marcus Trescothick drove a catch to mid-off first ball and the home side limped to 39 for 3 as James Hildreth was trapped lbw by Robin Martin-Jenkins and Ben Phillips was yorked by Yasir Arafat. However, a excellent recovery was staged by Kieswetter and de Bruyn who added 167 for the fourth wicket.Kieswetter, who qualifies for England next February, was dropped on 0 by James Kirtley at first slip and continued his strong season with another display from powerful striking once he had weathered the early problems. He was particularly strong through the off side whenever given a hint of width and his hundred came up off 107 balls. However, when he top edged a pull shortly afterwards Somerset lost their momentum. de Bruyn fell four runs short of his century when he chipped a catch back to Arafat and Sussex’s four spinners did a fine job on a ground that is very difficult to defend – something Somerset later found to their cost.

Theo Corbeanu must start vs Cheltenham

With Sheffield Wednesday having racked up three draws in their previous three League One matches, Darren Moore’s side are back in action this afternoon with a clash against Cheltenham Town to try and secure a win rather than yet another draw or a defeat.

On the chalkboard

Looking ahead to the fixture, one player who we think should be in the starting XI for the Owls is on-loan winger Theo Corbeanu, who Moore has praised in the past for being able to get into “wonderful” positions on the pitch.

Predominantly due to Wednesday’s three previous league results, we feel that Moore could do with shaking up his team in some way. Whether that’s with the personnel he’s using on the pitch or the formation he’s asking them to utilise, they just need something fresh to turn their form around.

Therefore, given how Corbeanu has yet to start a League One game for the Owls since joining the club back in August from Wolves’ under-23 side and has only played eight minutes from one appearance in their past seven league games, we feel that now is a great time for Moore to unleash the winger from the start against Cheltenham to see what sort of impact he has on the team and this game in particular.

Despite having yet to register a goal or assist for Wednesday, we think that starting Corbeanu against Cheltenham could be a gamble worth taking at this point in the season to see if he can change the Owls’ fortunes in terms of results, as well as his own record in his first loan spell away from Wolves.

In the two Papa John’s Trophy matches where he has played 90 minutes for Wednesday, the 19-year-old – who is currently valued at £900k according to Transfermarkt – has had eight shots (five on target) and two key passes, along with an average passing accuracy percentage of 80%. That shows how much of an attacking threat he can be, albeit against lower opposition like Newcastle United’s under-21 side and League Two outfit Mansfield Town.

Looking ahead to the match against Cheltenham, in terms of who Corbeanu could come into the team and replace, we feel that Moore should take Saido Berahino out of the line-up considering that he hasn’t managed to score a goal in his last six league appearances for the Owls.

In other news: Moore must ruthlessly axe Owls disaster with the “wrong mentality” for Cheltenham clash
