'Safety cannot be guaranteed' warns Vaughan

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has said he would ‘find it very difficult to go back’ to India

Cricinfo staff29-Nov-2008If England do return to India to play the two Tests, it appears quite possible that some of the squad will chose to remain at home, leaving the selectors to make some hasty reshuffling. However, Michael Vaughan, who was in Bangalore with the England High Performance team at the time of the attacks in Mumbai, has warned that doing so might not be straightforward.”All the lads will be desperate to play cricket for their country, but they will want to have their safety guaranteed and the trouble with this sort of attack is that safety cannot be guaranteed, even if they are given presidential security,” Vaughan told the Sunday Telegraph.”We have a duty to go and play cricket if it is safe to do so, but if the players have fear, they can’t go out there and perform. There are a lot of young players in this England squad who are new to this sort of thing. Can they focus and concentrate on cricket so soon afterwards? Any slightly negative mentality and they will get found out.”If the Middlesex players had been involved … if they had checked into the Taj hotel 24 hours earlier … and if some of their guys had been held hostage, would this Test series be going ahead? Almost certainly not.”As for Vaughan himself, he said he would “find it very difficult to go back, having been there and watched the scenes on TV – scenes of gunmen shooting people and corpses being dragged out of a hotel where the England team were staying a fortnight ago and where they were due to be staying in just over a fortnight”.And he warned that even if the tour was to resume, it would “become like a military camp”.”Above all, there has to be a period of mourning, and I think that less than a fortnight is not long enough.”

Nuno facing another Tottenham injury scare

Taking to Twitter, Sky Sports injury analyst Ben Dinnery has shared an update on Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn after he was taken off for the Netherlands against Turkey on Tuesday night.

The Lowdown: Spurs in crisis mode?

Alongside the unavailability of Davinson Sanchez, Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso, who are undergoing a training camp in Croatia (Dan Kilpatrick), Spurs could be without several players due to injury.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Son Heung-min, Ryan Sessegnon and Oliver Skipp are all at the centre of concerns following knocks picked up on international duty, with another worry having now emerged over Bergwijn.

The 23-year-old Dutchman, who has started all of Nuno Espirito Santo’s first three Premier League games in charge of Spurs, was hauled off against Turkey after appearing to pick up a knock.

He was also pictured with icing on his left ankle.

The Latest: Dinnery shares update…

Taking to social media, Dinney – an injury expert and contributor to Sky Sports – has shared an update on the situation surrounding Bergwijn’s fitness.

He claims that the Dutchman ‘will be assessed’ after appearing to pick up the knock, with Nuno now facing a nervous wait to see if Spurs’ exciting starlet can indeed feature against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Nuno’s men go to Selhurst Park with a 100% winning start to their Premier League season and the Portuguese head coach will not want to lose momentum now.

The Verdict: Nervous wait…

Bergwijn has been one of the new Spurs manager’s favoured players so far and it is safe to say that he will not want to be without the attacker for long.

According to WhoScored, only superstars Son and Harry Kane can boast better attacking numbers than Bergwijn so far in the English top flight out of Tottenham’s squad this season. Indeed, only the South Korea international has averaged more shots on goal per game than Bergwijn, whilst Kane is the only Spurs player to register a higher amount of key passes in the final third (WhoScored).

It has been quite the bright start for him this season and an injury to deter it is the last thing needed.

Celtic: Who will benefit from Taylor injury blow?

When one player comes back, it feels as though another one gets injured at Celtic.

The Hoops are set to be boosted this week by the return of Anthony Ralston who missed their clash with Ross County at the weekend.

It will be a timely boost for the Bhoys as they gear up for the first Europa League group stage encounter of the campaign.

They take on Real Betis in Sevilla but they do now have a major problem.

On the chalkboard

Defensive issues are mounting for Celtic with Greg Taylor set to miss the match in Spain with a shoulder problem.

The left-back missed the Old Firm derby a few weeks ago with an injury and had to withdraw from the Scotland squad during the international break.

In that defeat to Rangers, Ange Postecoglou decided to hand a debut to Josip Juranovic but he began his Celtic career out of position at left-back.

This would be a risky decision in midweek and instead, they should consider unleashing someone who is more competent on the left-hand side of defence.

The manager left Boli Bolingoli out of Celtic’s Europa League squad so the only other players he could turn to is new signing Liam Scales or the rarely-seen Adam Montgomery.

The latter made his breakthrough towards the back end of last season when John Kennedy was in temporary charge of the team but he’s made a real impact under the new boss.

Montgomery has featured on five occasions this term but is yet to start in 2021/22 for Celtic.

However, that simply has to change on Thursday evening with Taylor out injured. First and foremost, the 19-year-old hasn’t put a foot wrong this term.

Secondly, he possesses the attacking attributes that Celtic’s number one option in that position has in his locker.

The teenager has previously described himself as “tricky” and has already been compared to a certain Kieran Tierney.

If Montgomery can live up to the Scotland international’s high standards then he will be an instant success at Parkhead.

Importantly, the manager also trusts him significantly. The defender came on against AZ Alkmaar last month when Taylor was first injured and performed admirably. Postecoglou remarked: “I thought Monty was outstanding coming on, a young player, knowing that we’re going to have defend a fair bit of the game.

“I thought he did an outstanding job.”

Based on that review, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Australian unleashed again when they travel to Spain later in the week.

Waiting and placement

Plays of the day for day one of the second Test between India and England in Mohali

One day you’re the dog
After the frisky knock that set up animprobable Indian win in Chennai, it was Virender Sehwag’s turn to be thelamp post. A hint of away movement from Stuart Broad, a thin nick, andcelebrations all round for England. They didn’t know then that the daywouldn’t get any better.Different venue, different game
During the Chennai run-chase,India had streaked past 50 in less than six overs. Here, the first halfdozen overs yielded 10 runs. When Sehwag is not out there, it can be a verydifferent sport. The waiting is the hardest part
Rahul Dravid had not struck a ballto the rope since the third Test against Australia in Delhi nearly twomonths ago. So, when he finally played an emphatic pull off a short one from JamesAnderson, it was a sign that normalcy was being restored. Slowly.Timing and placement
Those aren’t two words anyone has associatedwith Dravid’s batting in quite a while, but when Monty Panesar landed ahalf-volley just outside off stump, Dravid leant into a superb drive thatneatly bisected the two men stationed in the cover region and past mid-off as well, leaving three fielders on the ground. When it’s not your day
Graeme Swann was a cut above any otherEnglish bowler, and he should have had Gautam Gambhir when he was on 70 – a thick edge to slip and a drop from the usually safe Paul Collingwood. It was a tough chance, and Swann’s mood didn’t improve a couple of overs later when Daryl Harper turned down an excellent leg-before shout. After the lull
India dawdled along in the hour before tea, and thecouple of thousand who had braved the chill and the security to sit in theconcrete stands opposite the pavilion were pretty silent until Gambhirsauntered down the pitch and lofted Swann over long-off. On a day whenattrition was very much the name of the game, it was one of the fewmoments for the crowd to do a little in the aisles.

Arteta gets big Arsenal boost vs Wimbledon

Arsenal have received a massive boost ahead of their Carabao Cup clash with AFC Wimbledon this evening…

What’s the latest?

According to The Sun, Gunners midfielder Thomas Partey made his return to first-team training at London Colney on Tuesday following a fresh injury scare.

The 28-year-old, who cost £45m a year ago, limped off during their 1-0 win over Burnley on Saturday afternoon.

Partey has already missed plenty of game time this campaign due to ankle and knee problems, so there were concerns after he was withdrawn 15 minutes from time, in what was his first league start of the season.

Big boost

Whilst it remains to be seen whether the 28-cap Ghana international will feature against the League One outfit, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has hinted that it would be a pretty strong line-up.

“I hope that I can put out the strongest team I can,” he revealed ahead of kick-off. “That means that the players have performed really well and then give a really strong performance and this is what we want to do. Let’s see who’s available, how they recover and what is the best way to approach the game.”

The Gunners alleviated their early-season woes by recording back-to-back 1-0 victories in the Premier League, defeating Norwich City and then Burnley, and Partey featured in some form across both matches.

Much of his time at the Emirates Stadium has been blighted by injuries but he still played an integral role last season as he led the squad for tackles (1.8) per game, whilst he wasn’t far behind for dribbles (1.2) and passing accuracy (87.2%) either, via WhoScored.

When fit, Partey has the potential to be a massive influence under Arteta, especially on the above evidence, which suggests he’s a sort of ball-winning midfielder that can drive the play forward into the final third, to some success, too.

Despite picking up two straight wins, the pressure will still be on the young Spanish head coach to deliver and he could well target success in a competition like this, so Wimbledon must not be taken lightly.

Having the £36m-rated star available will certainly help ease the prospect of a potential upset. This will come as a huge boost to Arteta, he’s surely relieved.

AND in other news, Edu could secure Arsenal’s next Alexis Sanchez in swoop for £19.8m-rated “phenomenon”…

Colombo Colts inch towards top spot with fifth win

A round-up of the eleventh-round matches of the Premier League Tournament in Sri Lanka

Colombo Colts CC are close to becoming Premier Tier A champions after they secured their fifth win of the season and their second successive victory inside two days when they trounced Nondescripts CC by six wickets in Colombo. The win left Colts with less than four points to score in their final game against Badureliya CC and displace defending champs Sinhalese SC from the top of the standings. SSC could only manage a draw against Tamil Union in their final match of the season after obtaining a first innings lead which left them precariously close to surrendering the title to Colts.Colts’ two-day win was made possible by Chaminda Vaas (56 and four wickets in the match), former Sri Lanka fast bowler Ruchira Perera (five-wicket match haul), left-arm spinner Sajeewa Weerakoon (match bag of eight wickets) and top order batsman Danuka Pathirana. His fluent knock of 109 off 118 balls put Colts’ run-chase on track after they had started horribly, losing three wickets for 10 runs.Sri Lanka Test batsman Thilan Samaraweera’s second hundred in successive weekends helped SSC score a formidable 454 in Colombo, but Tamil Union replied boldly ending day two at 268 for 3. SSC, however, fought back through spinner Sachithra Senanayake, whose 6 for 134 undermined Sajith Fernando’s splendid knock of 139. Tamil Union fell short by 68 runs in the first innings.Ragama CC moved to third spot in the standings when they comprehensively beat Army SC – who are at the bottom of the table and look certain to be demoted to Tier B. They, along with Nondescripts CC, are the only club in Tier A without a single win for the season. A rare century from Ian Daniel and a solid knock of 75 from Hemantha Wickremaratne helped Ragama reach a first innings total of 350. Army failed with the bat, making 168 in the first innings, and capitulated to 208 in the second – in pursuit of 404 – to lose by 196 runs. Spinner Dinesh Darshanpriya routed their batting in the second innings taking five wickets.Former Sri Lanka one-day allrounder Dilhara Lokuhettige starred for Moors SC, enabling them gain a first innings lead in their drawn match against Colombo CC at the Moors Sports Club Ground. Lokuhettige slammed 142 off 134 balls, striking five sixes and 17 fours, and followed it up with a fine performance with the ball capturing five wickets for 40 runs as CCC fell short by 72 runs in the first innings.Offspinner Suraj Mohamed (match haul of 9 for 163) and Shanuka Dissanayake (106) played pivotal roles in Bloomfield’s domination of Chilaw Marians at the Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club. The Premier Tier B title was in abeyance with the tournament committee giving hosts Sebastianites time till February 7 to choose a suitable venue to play a crucial matchagainst Panadura SC. The outcome of the will decide the winners of Tier B and determine who will be demoted to he 2-day Sara trophy tournament next season. Pandura trail table leaders Saracens by nearly 16 points, while Sebastianites – who are at the bottom of the table – need a win to avoid relegation.Player of the Week – Dilhara Lokuhettige
For pure entertainment there is no exciting prospect as Dilhara Lokuhettige, the Moors SC and former Sri Lanka one-day all-rounder. Lokuhettige was given an opportunity to resurrect his career when he was included in the national team for the Canada Cup Twenty20 in October last year after a three-year break. He didn’t get as many chances to display his talents but he still remains in the bidding for the ICC World T20 in England later this year. He has the ability to change a course of a game with his swashbuckling batting and bustling seam bowling, and has the ability to rattle the best of batsmen on a helpful pitch. He is one of the first Sri Lankan cricketers to be labeled a Twenty20 specialist. In 2007, playing for Moors SC against NCC in a Premier League match, he raced to a double century off 172 balls which included 22 fours and 11 sixes. It remained a Sri Lankan first-class record until a fortnight ago when Jeevantha Kulatunga of Colts overhauled it.Lokuhettige said his stint with Checkley CC in the Staffordshire League has helped his cricket immensely. “I have worked hard at my batting as I was told I lacked the ability to finish off matches. In the past two years I used to go to practice early and get someone to throw the ball at me on a cement pitch.”
