Steve Howey warns Newcastle to steer clear of Salomon Rondon

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, former Newcastle United defender Steve Howey believes the Magpies need to steer well clear of Salomon Rondon this summer.

The Dalian Professional striker, who spent a season on loan at Newcastle back in 2018-19, has been linked with a return to England.

According to The Sun, Rondon is attracting a lot of Premier League interest, including from ex-manager Rafael Benitez and Everton.

Howey, however, has warned his old side not to get involved, suggesting that Rondon has probably regressed after spending time playing outside one of the big leagues.

“I would steer clear of him if I’m being honest,” the ex-Newcastle centre-half told TT. “I mean, I thought he did really well at Newcastle. But without being disrespectful, the Chinese league is not the best standard in the world.

“It’s certainly not the Premier League. Players don’t go there to better themselves; the only thing they better is their bank balance.”

One injury to Callum Wilson, who managed to score 12 goals in the Premier League last season, and Newcastle suddenly do look very weak up front.

They certainly could do with another striker when you look at the goal records of Joelinton and Dwight Gayle in English football’s top flight. From Howey’s point of view, though, Rondon is probably not the answer.

Redmond fifty sets up interesting finish

New Zealand made a resolute start in their chase of 317 to win the first Test against Bangladesh in Chittagong by reaching 84 for the loss of opener Jamie How

A see-saw Test match continued to swing from one side to the other on a riveting fourth day at Chittagong. A partnership of 90 between Aaron Redmond and Jesse Ryder raised New Zealand’s hopes of a win but Ryder’s wicket just before stumps brought Bangladesh right back into the match.New Zealand are, however, the better placed going into the final day at 145 for 2, needing another 172 for victory as Redmond along with captain Daniel Vettori, who came in as night watchman, look to maintain their unbeaten record against the hosts.Returning after the tea break at 84 for 1 and chasing 317 for what earlier seemed to be an improbable win, Ryder and Redmond looked set to take the visitors through to stumps but, with three overs to go, Ryder was run out to a direct hit by Mashrafe Mortaza from third man.The debutant made an impressive 38, which included four boundaries, looking comfortable in the middle and determined to lead his team to victory on the final day. The second-wicket partnership with Redmond, who remained unbeaten on 62, was a record against Bangladesh. The wicket was just the boost Bangladesh needed as the lack of confidence and enthusiasm had clearly begun to show. In sight of a historic win themselves, the bowlers seemed to have lost the fire evident in the first innings as the New Zealand batsmen looked in total control throughout the final session with the pitch having lost most of its spin and bounce. The only wicket taker was Abdur Razzak, who dismissed Jamie How for 36.The day though, belonged to Redmond. Not only did he post his first Test fifty, he also picked up his maiden Test wicket earlier in the day. The part-time leg spinner had Mortaza stumped for 44.Mortaza, who looked like taking the game away from New Zealand, put on 40 along with Abdur Razzak for the ninth wicket earlier in the day after Bangladesh resumed on their overnight score of 184 for 8. And even after Razzak was caught by Ross Taylor off Iain O’Brien, Mortaza added another crucial 22 runs, helping Bangladesh reach 242.Vettori may have missed his second five-wicket haul in the match, ending with figures of 4 for 74, but would have been pleased at having kept the target within reach. After surviving the three overs before lunch, Redmond and Jamie How resumed after the break taking the score to 55 before How was dismissed. Giving himself room outside the leg stump to a ball from Razzak, he was clean bowled after having done all the hard work initially. In what seemed to be a complete turnaround in performance this series from the openers, How took the attack to the Bangladesh bowling. Unlike most of the batsmen in the first innings, he used his feet well and was not afraid to come down the pitch to meet the spinners.Redmond, however, was far more circumspect. He was unbeaten on 27 going into lunch, and continued the defensive approach he adopted in the first innings. Two boundaries in the last over before tea helped improve the strike rate as he remained unbeaten on 62 off 192 balls. While the opening stand was the highest by a New Zealand pair in Bangladesh, they failed to rotate the strike often. Of the 210 deliveries bowled in the innings till tea, there were only 28 singles and 169 dot balls. However, Redmond stepped up the pace in the final session with Ryder. He played some beautiful late cuts down to the boundary and began picking up more singles as the field spread. It has been an important innings for the opener, who failed on the recent tour of England, scoring his previous best score of 28 in Test cricket at Old Trafford.

ICC to look into BCCI's complaint over Lloyd's comments

The ICC will look into a complaint from the BCCI against Clive Lloyd, the ICC cricket committee chairman, for suggesting the unrecognised ICL and the IPL, run by the BCCI, should learn to co-exist

Cricinfo staff21-Nov-2008The ICC will look into a complaint from the BCCI against Clive Lloyd, the ICC cricket committee chairman, for suggesting the unrecognised ICL and the IPL, run by the BCCI, should learn to co-exist. However, Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief executive, said it would first check with Lloyd to understand the context and veracity of the remarks that were reported in an Indian newspaper.Confirming the ICC had received an email from N Srinivasan, the BCCI secretary, on the issue, Lorgat told Cricinfo the ICC would approach the issue in a “fair and appropriate” manner. There was no time-frame involved in the process, he said.Asked about the ICL during a private visit to Mumbai last week, Lloyd, the former West Indies captain had told that “there’s nothing like having a discussion to break the ice”, and suggested the West Indies needed leagues like the ICL and the IPL to revive the game in the country. The BCCI on Thursday wrote to the ICC seeking action against Lloyd and compared the situation to the stepping down of Sunil Gavaskar as ICC cricket committee chairman earlier this year. Gavaskar was asked by the ICC to choose between his ICC role and that of a media commentator.Lorgat said he didn’t believe the comparison was valid. “We need to first establish if the merits of the case are the same,” Lorgat told Cricinfo. “Personally, I don’t believe so. We need to just ensure he does not make comments that are not appropriate. And if it is different case we need to establish exactly what the facts are without which it is very difficult to make comments.”The BCCI has adopted a hard-line position against ICL, and banned players associated with it from all forms of official cricket. It has also refused to entertain requests from the ICL for recognition, and pushed for a worldwide ban on players and officials associated with the Twenty20 league.Interestingly, the BCCI’s Asian allies have emerged with conflicting policies on ICL. Sri Lanka Cricket, headed by Arjuna Ranatunga, has allowed six ICL players to participate in a domestic competition, while Javed Miandad, the new director-general of the Pakistan board, has questioned the intent of the bans enforced by past PCB administrations on players contracted with the ICL.

Valeu

Masi reveals reason for transfer decision

West Bromwich Albion did not make a move for a right-back this summer due to Valerien Ismael’s faith in Albion’s youth prospects.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a Joseph Masi report for The Express & Star, with the journalist claiming that, despite a distinct lack of depth at right wing-back, the Frenchman decided not to sanction a move for a player in the position over the course of the summer transfer window due to his faith in both Taylor Gardner-Hickman and Ethan Ingram.

Masi continued by stating that many West Brom fans, himself included, would have liked to see the 45-year-old strengthen the position this summer.

However, the journalist went on to add that very few fans of the club would want to see the pathway of a promising youngster to the first-team blocked.

Fans should be excited

While it is indeed true that, should Darnell Furlong pick up an injury over what is sure to be a long and arduous Championship campaign for West Brom, Ismael will have a very limited number of senior options to replace the 25-year-old, the fact that the 45-year-old is so keen to place his trust in the likes of Gardner-Hickman and Ingram should excite Albion fans.

Indeed, while the 18-year-old Ingram and the 19-year-old Gardner-Hickman have made just one senior appearance each for the Baggies, should the youngsters possess the ability to feature in the Championship on occasions this season – which Ismael clearly feels they do – the experience of playing in the second tier of English football will only help their development in the professional game.

And, if one of the young right-backs can go on to secure the spot of Furlong’s deputy in the position, or potentially even begin the push the £4.5m-rated man for his starting place in Ismael’s side come the end of the season, the Frenchman will certainly be vindicated in his decision not to bring in a fresh face at right-back this summer – not only because the emergence of an academy prospect will have saved the club money, but his faith in the youngsters could potentially help create a very valuable asset for the Baggies.

Fans love to see one of their own come through the system and make their mark on the first-team, and it’s exactly why Ismael’s reported faith in West Brom’s youngsters is an exciting approach.

Spurs: Nuno dealt gutting Traore blow

Tottenham Hotspur’s chances of signing Adama Traore in the future have been dealt a gutting blow…

What’s the word?

In the final week of the summer transfer window, the north London outfit were heavily mooted with a move for the Wolves winger.

According to the Telegraph’s Matt Law, Spurs were set to “accelerate talks” to sign the Spanish international on loan with a view to a permanent £40m move. The Athletic’s Jack Pitt-Brooke even suggested that a deal had actually been agreed.

Evidently, that did not come to fruition and now the Lilywhites’ may not be able to secure a move for the Nuno Santo favourite in the near future.

The Sun claim that Wolves now want to make Traore their highest-paid player by offering him a bumper £120k-per-week four-year contract extension.

It’s thought that this would more than double his current deal (£55k-per-week) and it is an attempt to keep teams like Spurs at bay heading into January and beyond. Talks will be stepped up after the international break.

Gutting setback

This will come as a massive blow to Nuno, who would have surely loved to see his former star reunited with him in north London.

A front three of Harry Kane, Heung-min Son and Traore would be one hugely frightening prospect as the explosive Wolves star has regularly troubled many a Premier League defence since his breakthrough at Molineux (largely under the Portuguese head coach, too).

For example, last season, the 25-year-old beast topped the charts for successful dribbles per game (4.1) and was the third-most fouled player (2.3x per match) in the division, per WhoScored.

Whilst in Spurs’ clash with Wolves this term, Traore bullied Nuno’s backline. He recorded nine dribbles, won 17 duels and created four key chances, via SofaScore.

After the game, Nuno claimed (via football.london): “I think Wolves have a very good team and created us enormous problems – big, big problems. One of those was Adama. Everyone knows Adama is unique, and he’s very hard to stop.”

Meanwhile, some of his past performances have earned high praise from many of the Premier League’s best – namely Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, who once described the 5 foot 10 powerhouse as “unplayable”, and former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, who dubbed him a “machine” on BT Sport duties.

Neither of Nuno’s current right-sided options have performed to a similar output as Traore this season, with Lucas Moura (2.3) and Steven Bergwijn (1.3) recording fewer dribbles thus far.

If Nuno and Fabio Paratici have any plans to reignite their interest in the £27m-rated summer target, then they may well be hugely disappointed given this latest development.

The chances of Traore becoming a Spurs player anytime soon appear to be diminishing.

AND in other news, Spurs receive big transfer boost over “complete” £34m-rated beast, Nuno surely buzzing…

'The older guys worry me'- Jennings

Ray Jennings, the former South Africa coach, has cracked the whip within days of joining the Bangalore Royal Challengers and said that “if the top guys don’t perform, it’s time to move on”. Jennings is also worried about the fitness and motivation levels

Ray Jennings, the former South Africa coach, has warned of sweeping changes in his new side, the Bangalore Royal Challengers, and voiced concern over the fitness and motivation levels of the “older guys” in the team. “If the top guys don’t perform, it’s time to move on,” he said.Jennings said he was surprised at the “balance of ages” and composition of the Bangalore team, and said the strategy that went into picking the team early this year was not well-planned. “When you picked, you would have known that Dravid, Kumble and Kallis might retire soon; the whole Challenger side might be retired in three years’ time.”A turnaround, by getting the “right players in the right positions”, Jennings said, would take some time to complete.Bangalore, led by Rahul Dravid, appointed Jennings as coach after finishing seventh out of eight teams in the inaugural IPL this year. Their chief executive was sacked midway through the tournament and Martin Crowe was replaced by Ray Jennings as coach last month. In between, Vijay Mallya, the Indian industrialist who owns the Bangalore franchise, openly criticised the composition of the team, tagged as a Test side, comprising players such as Dravid, Wasim Jaffer, Jacques Kallis, and Anil Kumble, who quit international cricket on Sunday.”The older guys worry me,” Jennings told Cricinfo. “IPL is quick and intense for six weeks. They worry me from the point of injury and motivation levels. I am not surprised at the quality of the Test players (selected last year) but the balance of the ages. In three years, many could be retired. To me, that doesn’t make sense.”Jennings said he would not be awed by the star players in the side and would focus on getting the best performances from them. “If I am not going to replace, then I am going to be replaced,” he said. “I don’t look at the names but the performances on the field. Name is one thing but I need a guy who needs to make the owner proud on the field. If the top guys can’t do it, then it’s time to move on.”Asked why the side failed last time, Jennings blamed it on the senior players. “The team lacked energy, commitment and skills. If you don’t enjoy each other’s company it must be a long six weeks. I will point the fingers at the senior players. They are the one who must have run that type of the culture in the side.”Meeting DravidRay Jennings is planning to meet Rahul Dravid to discuss the future of his captaincy and role in the side.”If Dravid is not the best captain, between us we will have to work itout,” Jennings said. “If he is the best guy to open the batting, that’s where he must bat. I met him for a day in May. We will sit together again and see the best role he can play. I want the best for the team.”I am going to ask the players one question: are they a Test team or are they cricketers?” he said. “If they are cricketers, let’s go out and whip a few backsides. The old guys have to understand the challenges. All the guys have taken a hiding and the owner is upset.”Jennings expressed concern over the availability of players from South Africa and Australia for the entire duration of the 2009 edition of IPL, and said he was not yet sure about his team’s budget for the one-month players’ transfer window that starts on December 15. “You can’t keep spending the money. You have a three-year contract in place. I see myself working with the majority of the existing set-up for some time,” he said.Jennings also spoke about the intensity of South African players, following comments from Dale Steyn, the fast bowler, that the IPL was a paid vacation for some cricketers. “The players have to understand that they can’t relax else they shouldn’t take their salary. Kallis and Boucher have worked with me before and they know I won’t take nonsense in that area.”I am not coming here to see the Indian guys and the foreigners going separate ways. They have to work together. I am going to make sure that I am in charge of a single unit. It’s not just about hitting balls, it about mixing with people; it’s about how they conduct themselves off the field.”Jennings was firm about his intolerance for any indiscipline in the team. “The same rules apply as they play in Test cricket. In some ways, more so. The salary per ball is higher here than in any other cricket. I can’t have a cricketer getting drunk before a game or any thing of that sort. I am going to challenge players if I feel a lack of intensity.”Despite the poor performances last year, Jennings was confident of turning things around. “Throughout my whole life I have taken sides from nothing to something. I wouldn’t want to be in for a six-week period. I want to be part of the Challengers for some period of time. It’s going to be the biggest challenge in my life.”
