Ricky Ponting, the Australia captain, has had surgery on his injured right wrist and is no certainty to take part in the team’s next matches, a series of three ODIs against Bangladesh in Darwin starting in late August. Ponting suffered the injury while batting in the third ODI against West Indies in Grenada last Sunday.He was released from the tour and sent back to Australia, where he immediately had an assessment with Cricket Australia medical staff and had the operation in Melbourne on Monday. The process was completed as quickly as possible to give Ponting the best chance of taking part in the Darwin ODIs and the Champions Trophy that follows.”We’re not sure [on his availability against Bangladesh] at this stage,” a Cricket Australia spokesman told . “We’ll have to assess him as we go along. But that’s why they got him in for assessment so quickly, so they could decide on a course of action rather than him going home [to Sydney] and leaving it a week. This way it gives him more time to recover.”Trefor James, Cricket Australia’s chief medical officer, said Ponting had a tendon injury that “requires repair of tissues that hold the tendon in place”. In Ponting’s absence in the Caribbean, Michael Clarke led the side for the first time in one-day internationals and completed the 5-0 whitewash that had started under Ponting.

Paul Stewart has played down Liverpool’s chances of signing PSG star Kylian Mbappe this summer – with his wages a potential stumbling block.

The French World Cup winner, who’s entered the final 12 months of his deal in the French capital, has been strongly linked with a move to Anfield, with the Reds enquiring about the 22-year-old’s availability, according to Marca.

Following the general disappoint of last season, plus seeing their Premier League title rivals make some massive signings, Jurgen Klopp could do with a statement of his own.

However, with just under four weeks remaining until the window closes, Liverpool have added only defender Ibrahima Konate from Leipzig for £35m.

But with the likes of Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez now fit and available, the Merseyside giants are in good shape heading into the new season.

However, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane have arguably lost their spark since Liverpool won the title in 2020, and therefore a marquee attacking signing is badly needed for Klopp.

Stewart exclusively told Football FanCast that doesn’t expect it to be Mbappe, who’s valued at £160m by Transfermarkt:

“Liverpool wouldn’t pay what he’d want in terms of wages, even though they would pay an awful lot. PSG would double his wages rather than see him go.”

Alex Tudor has agreed with Essex to be released owing to increasingly limited opportunities at the club. The fast bowler, who has been playing 2nd XI cricket for much of this season, is now searching for a loan deal with another county for the rest of the year.Tudor has spent four years with the club, the first of those two on a performance-related basis owing to concerns over his fitness, but although he has been injury-free in 2008, first-team appearances were increasingly thin on the ground.Maurice Chambers has recently taken his fast-bowling spot in the Championship. Tudor was picked in Essex’s Friends Provident Trophy quarter-final side against Leicestershire at Grace Road, but missing out on the semi-final against Yorkshire at the County Ground was possibly the trigger. The club’s chief executive David East has said that it would be in Tudor’s best interests to explore new pastures.”There is no doubt he has a great deal still to offer in the professional game”, said East. “On that basis we have agreed that we are prepared to loan Alex to another county over the course of the rest of the season should an opportunity arise and we wish him well in his future career wherever he ends up.”Tudor, the former England fast bowler, said it was “a shame” he had to go but realised it was “the best way for everyone”.”I have thoroughly enjoyed my four years at Essex and am delighted to have been able to prove my fitness during my time at the club. Newcastle United hoped to insert a ‘punitive’ buyout clause into Joe Willock’s contract and it’s unclear if they were successful, The Athletic’s Chris Waugh writes. 

The lowdown

Willock sealed his permanent move to St James’ Park on Friday, signing a six-year contract. Newcastle have shelled out more than £20m to secure the services of the Arsenal man off the back of an impressive loan which saw him score in seven straight matches at the end of last season (via BBC Sport).

Steve Bruce says that the club had to ‘patient and persistent’ in their pursuit of their ‘number one target’. Even when an agreement was reached with Arsenal, personal terms ‘took time’ to be finalised.

The latest

Writing for The Athletic, Waugh explored the possible reasons for the ‘prolonged deliberations’. ‘Some sources’ claimed it was down to money, with Willock hopeful of becoming the club’s top earner, but others have dismissed that version of events.

It may have been down to Newcastle’s preference for a buyout clause, perceived as a safety mechanism after they lost Ayoze Perez to Leicester City for £30m in 2019.

Such an arrangement is ‘unlikely to have appealed’ to Willock, but it’s ‘not clear’ whether the clause was ultimately included in his six-year contract.

Indeed, the player compromised on the length of his deal – he wanted it to be ‘slightly shorter’ – and as a result Newcastle made ‘concessions’ in other areas.

The verdict

It may well have been the case that Newcastle were forced to scrap the buyout clause idea, but we can only speculate at this stage.

The good news for the club is that, even if Willock’s representatives successfully resisted that provision, the length of his contract should still ensure that his value is prohibitively high for the foreseeable future.

Privately, the youngster may well harbour long-term ambitions of another shot at one of the biggest clubs.

In other news, this player was particularly desperate to see Willock join Newcastle. 

There’s been plenty of talk regarding Liverpool’s search for a new midfielder and forward player over the summer, with Jurgen Klopp desperate to put a hugely disappointing 2020/21 campaign behind him.

Several star names have been linked with plugging a Gini Wijnaldum-shaped hole in the engine room or coming in to add competition for a misfiring Sadio Mane, but the answer to the club’s conundrums could already be within Anfield.

On the chalkboard

Harvey Elliott rose to prominence after becoming the Premier League’s youngest-ever player at 16 years and 30 days, coming on as an 88th-minute substitute for Fulham against Wolves back in 2019.

Since then, the now 18-year-old has gone from strength to strength. After completing his transfer to Liverpool, the youngster made eight senior appearances for Klopp’s charges throughout 2019/20, adding to his top-flight experience.

A season-long loan move to Championship side Blackburn Rovers followed, and it was at Ewood Park where Elliott truly turned from a teenage prodigy to a potential wonderkid.

In 43 outings for the Lancashire outfit, the England Under-17 international bagged seven goals, providing a further 12 assists for his teammates.

His standout performances led to former teammate Elliott Bennett labeling Elliott a “special player” on Twitter and has seen Klopp reintegrate him into his first-team plans during pre-season.

“We have a new midfielder in our squad in Harvey Elliott,” the German tactician announced (as relayed by James Pearce). “We have players who can make a big step. We are not blind. We see what others are doing. We just have to be able to beat them. We will try to do that.”

“Harvey can play different positions. In pre-season, we wanted to see him in a deeper role. He’s made a big step in the pre-season. If he stays fit then the football world can be really excited about that. I really liked his performance and attitude in pre-season.”

With the financial impact of the ongoing pandemic severely restricting Liverpool’s spending power this summer, FSG, the club’s owners, may not have the spending power to buy both a midfielder and an attacker.

And that’s where Elliott comes in. With Jordan Henderson and Thiago only recently returning to training and Curtis Jones ruled out through injury, the diminutive gem is in contention to start the Reds’ curtain-raiser against Norwich at the weekend.

After becoming renowned for his technical ability, eye for a pass and ability to cooly slot the ball into the corner of the net, Elliott has showcased his truly world-class potential, the prospect of him linking up with Mohamed Salah is a mouth-watering concept.

His development could save the club millions, but more importantly than that, he has the ability to spark a new wave of Liverpool success, taking over the baton from Salah, the last player to fire the 19-time English champions to domestic and European glory.

A calm stand of 55 between captain Tom Westley and Liam Dawson guided them to an adjusted target of 176 with seven balls to spare.As is the case with the senior side, New Zealand failed to give up despite having problems throughout the day. Their top order wobbled to 99 for 4 before some useful lower-order efforts lifted them to a competitive 231 for 8. Harry Boam was the top-scorer with 41. England didn’t help their own cause by providing 32 extras, including 13 wides and six no-balls.Alex Wakely got England ahead of the rate at the start of the chase with 44 off 36 balls – twice clearing the boundary – but from 77 without loss three wickets fell for 16, Boam again playing his part with his medium pace.However, when a captain’s innings was needed Westley provided one and moved along at a run-a-ball, while Dawson kept England above the rate with a 21-ball 27. New Zealand will have a chance for revenge straight away with the second match taking place on Sunday, again at Canterbury.
