Bangladesh slump to humiliating defeat

On Sunday Bangladesh had pointed to a brighter future with a respectable performance, but on Monday they reinforced their reputation as international minnows, as they were bowled out for a humiliating 76 at the Sinhalese Sports Club

Charlie Austin04-Aug-2002On Sunday Bangladesh had pointed to a brighter future with a respectable performance, but on Monday they reinforced their reputation as international minnows, as they were bowled out for a humiliating 76 at the Sinhalese Sports Club.Sri Lanka needed just three and a half hours to seal the three-match series, as sponsors counted their losses and the television broadcaster searched its archives for sufficient replays to fill the remainder of the day.It was Bangladesh’s lowest total in their 52-match history, surpassing the miserly 87 they had scored against Pakistan at Dhaka in 2000.Perhaps worse, they had to endure the ignominy of extras contributing more runs to their total than their highest scorer: skipper Khaled Mushud, who was last man out for 15.Sri Lanka lost two wickets chasing, including Sanath Jayasuriya, who was caught at short fine leg off a mistimed pull for the second consecutive day, before eventually overhauling their paltry target with 34.3 overs to spare.Mashud, one of the few Bangladeshi batsmen on the tour to place a consistently high price on his wicket, was not best pleased: "They bowled well, but we batted really badly – it was a really disappointing performance."He is optimistic about the future, but want clearer signs of progress: "We have some really young, talented players. Maybe we can’t win all the time but we have to do better than this, improving day by day.Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya was delighted. "We can now have a rest – these back-to-back matches are always tiring," he joked. "Our bowling and fielding was much better today. These are the two aspects of our game that we are working on hardest, so that’s pleasing."The tourists had started brightly enough after winning a potentially important toss on a re-used pitch, with both openers crashing a boundary apiece in the early overs. But the innings soon subsided, Chaminda Vaas inducing a wild pull from Mohammad Ashraful (5) and Dilhara Fernando picking up a brace of wickets with his slower ball, a cleverly disguised delivery that slips through his fingers at the last moment (27 for three).Dilhara Fernando won the Man of the Match for his opening burst and Jayasuriya was delighted to have him back after injury: "He hasn’t played a lot of cricket because of the stress fracture but he’s coming good now. His slower ball is one of the best deliveries in world cricket at the moment and he’s a fast improving cricketer."Hasantha Fernando, Sri Lanka’s third seamer in this game as they left out pace bowler Chamila Gamage, struck in his second over, fortuitously trapping Habibul Bashar (10) lbw when the right-hander looked to have been hit outside the line of off-stump (40 for four).Muttiah Muralitharan then joined the fray, grabbing two quick wickets to move past Shane Warne in the all-time ODI wicket-taking list.Tushar Imran (10), yesterday’s hero, bat-padded a catch straight into the hands of Russel Arnold at silly point and, with five close fielders crowded around the bat, former captain Naimur Rahman (0) was dismissed for a duck as he edged Muralitharan’s straighter delivery into the gloves of Sangakkara behind the stumps (51 for six).Hasantha Fernando grabbed his second wicket when one-day specialist Khaled Mahmud (0) drove a simple catch to Marvan Atapattu at cover before leg-spinner Upul Chandana wrapped up the innings with three wickets for just two runs. The final match of the series will be played at Premadasa International Stadium on Wednesday, when Sri Lanka will give opportunities to other members of the 15-man squad.

Irani released, Trescothick optimistic

Essex captain Ronnie Irani has been released from England’s squad for the final Test against India at The AMP Oval

Stephen Lamb04-Sep-2002Essex captain Ronnie Irani has been released from England’s squad for the final Test against India at The AMP Oval.Irani had reported at the ground yesterday saying he was fully fit for the Test following an operation on his right knee, but after a look at the pitch England have allowed him to return to Essex for their Frizzell County Championship match against Middlesex at Chelmsford.Meanwhile Marcus Trescothick believes he is a likely starter in the Test, despite playing in just two one-day games since breaking his thumb in a C&G match at Taunton six weeks ago. Trescothick had a net session yesterday against a bowling machine delivering at up to 85mph.”If I was pushed I would say I’m more likely to play than not,” he said. “There were a couple of balls from Matthew Hoggard in Saturday’s C&G Final which I felt, but it’s been like that in nearly every net session.”Once you get through the pain barrier it seems to be all right. It is a mental barrier for me to get over – it was a bad break and it’s all a question of me getting over it because it’s mainly a confidence thing.”We cranked up the bowling machine at just short of a length because playing off the back foot is when it causes me the most problems, but the more I practice, the happier I feel about batting.”

Windass: West Ham would be fantastic fit for Danny Ings

Former Premier League striker Dean Windass believes that West Ham United would be a fantastic fit for Danny Ings, and that manager David Moyes would be delighted if he could get him.

The Athletic reported earlier this month that Ings had turned down a new contract with Southampton as he wants another chance with a club challenging towards the top of the table, with the same source saying the east London outfit have registered their interest.

Ings scored 13 goals in all competitions for the Saints last season, taking his total overall to 46 goals in 100 games for the south coast outfit.

The Saints valued Ings at £20million according to Eurosport, and Windass told Football FanCast: “Listen any manager in the Premier League would take Danny Ings for £20millon. The reason why he is leaving Southampton is because he is not winning any trophies, he’s not playing in European football.

“So, the only way that he’s going to go is the top six and West Ham would be a fantastic fit and obviously Moysey would be delighted if he got him, especially for 20 million quid.”

The race for the signature of Ings is hotting up, as Eurosport reported the other day that Tottenham Hotspur were preparing an opening bid for Danny Ings, but talkSPORT’s Alex Crook said earlier this month that Southampton have no intention of selling Ings this summer.

New WICB selection rule in place

The West Indies Cricket Board’s selection eligibility rule for the senior West Indies cricket team has been changed

Derrick Nicholas03-Sep-2002The West Indies Cricket Board’s selection eligibility rule for the senior West Indies cricket team has been changed. This decision was taken following a recent WICB directors’ meeting that reviewed the selection eligibility rule.”The new rule that becomes effectively immediately states that a player will be eligible for selection to the senior West Indies team when he makes himself available for selection to his national team in a competition immediately preceding the selection of a senior West Indies team,” remarked Gregory Shillingford, chief executive of the WICB.He added: “In the end, they have decided to adopt a policy that they hope will lead to the creation of better opportunities all around and ensure that our cricket once more returns to a position of strength.”Shillingford noted the WICB’s directors considered a number of factors that would impact upon the eligibility rule, and thought long and hard about how best they could satisfy all stakeholders.”First, the directors had to ensure that its valued sponsors obtained a fair return for their investment in the game,” said Shillingford.”But they also had to consider that a cricketer’s career and livelihood is generally enhanced by their ability to ply their trade in a professional environment, and we the directors accepted that we do not have such a professional setup in the West Indies at present nor are we able to support a retainer system.”They also felt that the best possible talent from the region should be available for selection to the West Indies selectors.”In prior years, selection to senior West Indies teams depended on players being available for all matches in the regional first-class and limited-overs competition, but the directors voted by a majority of 13-1 to change the rule.Rev. Wes Hall, president of the WICB, “This should demonstrate how agreeable many of the directors find the new ruling. We noted and appreciated the views of the director that voted against the rule.”But we feel this change represents a first step to addressing the new competitive requirements of the rigourous 10-year tour programme of the International Cricket Council that involves teams playing at least 15 Tests and 25 limited-overs internationals annually.”Shillingford concluded that the WICB now had to focus on acquiring the resources that will allow it to be in a position to offer the players retainer contracts and set up a professional league at the club and/or regional level.”This means we will also have to look at the way we schedule and structure our competitions so they provide our players with the kind of environment that will lead to outstanding performances,” he stated.

Saints fans rage at Lemina update

Southampton fans are far from happy with an update on Mario Lemina, who is said to have travelled to complete his transfer to Nice without permission from the Saints hierarchy.

£9m-valued Lemina (Transfermarkt) recently completed a move to Nice after ending his time at St. Mary’s Stadium (ogcnice.com). He made the move initially to the south coast from Juventus in 2017, but he managed just 52 appearances for the Saints before moving out on loan to Galatasaray and then Fulham (Transfermarkt).

Unfortunately, his attitude appeared to be an issue at Southampton, and his problems in that department have once again reared their ugly head. As per The Athletic, the 27-year-old Gabon international flew to France to complete his transfer to Nice without seeking permission from the Saints higher ups.

The news was shared on Twitter by @SaintsExtra, and it attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about the Lemina update

A pedido do Leão, audiência do caso Victor Ramos segue suspensa

O clube gaúcho tenta provar no Tribunal a suposta escalação irregular do zagueiro Victor Ramos, ex-Vitória, durante jogos do Campeonato Brasileiro da última temporada.
