As a centre-back, O’Connor was always going to find it difficult to break into Steven Gerrard’s first team. The 41-year-old already has Nikola Katic, Connor Goldson, Filip Helander, Leon Balogun and George Edmundson at his disposal in that position, so there had ben plenty of options above O’Connor in the pecking order.

However, O’Connor now has the chance to prove Gerrard and everyone else at Rangers wrong by showing that he has the ability to reach the very top by thriving elsewhere. If he were to go to Stoke and impress in the English Championship, he would go some way to proving a point to the Ibrox club.

One area they appear to be targeting players is up front. That might be surprising considering Dominic Calvert-Lewin found the net on 21 occasions last season.

However, that hasn’t stopped rumours of Haris Seferovic and Allan Saint-Maximin arriving at Goodison Park.

The latest piece of gossip from Merseyside is that they are interested in signing Tammy Abraham.

The English striker is out of favour at Chelsea and with the Blues linked with a mega-money swoop for Erling Haaland, he could be given the boot.

Cast your minds back to the summer of 2014 and you may remember Everton smashing their transfer record.

The player in question was a certain Romelu Lukaku who left Chelsea behind in a deal worth £28m.

Like Abraham, the Belgian was out of favour and decided to move elsewhere in search of regular first-team football.

The deal surpassed everyone’s expectations as Lukaku quickly proved why he is among the most devastating forwards in world football.

During his time in Merseyside, the powerful attacker beat the goalkeeper on 87 occasions in 166 matches. What followed was a monumental move to Manchester United before he joined Inter and then lit up Euro 2020, ending the competition in the Team of the Tournament.

Abraham isn’t at the same elite level just yet but there would be plenty of similarities between the move.

Not in the manager’s plans but still scoring goals, the 23-year-old has racked up 30 strikes for Chelsea despite a lack of regular football. He’s also been described as “phenomenal” by Alex McLeish even when not playing.

Lukaku has always been a player capable of blowing a defender away. He can hold the ball up, roll his marker and then dart away from the backline with heavy but quick strides.

Abraham might not possess the same speed or finesse but his power and ability to hold the ball up has similarities.

For instance, last season the current Chelsea striker won 1.8 aerial duels per match in the Premier League. That happened to be the same number Lukaku managed in the Champions League for Inter.

Both tall and offering an immense presence in attack, this deal has the potential to replicate the one they concluded seven years ago.

Leicester City are set to step up their efforts to tie star midfielder Youri Tielemans down to a new contract over the coming days.

What’s the story?

The 24-year-old is expected to return from his holiday later this month, and convincing him to put pen to paper on fresh terms is a top priority for the Foxes’ hierarchy, according to Daily Mail journalist Tom Collomosse.

Tielemans’ current £33k-per-week contract expires in the summer of 2023, and a new deal would see him join Jamie Vardy and Kasper Schmeichel as the club’s top earners.

Rodgers will be delighted

Since arriving on English shores back in January 2019, Tielemans has established himself as one of Leicester’s key players, bagging 17 goals and providing a further 19 assists in 108 appearances for the Midlands outfit.

His best moment in a Leicester shirt – and arguably his career – came at the end of last season when struck a thunderbolt into the top corner of Kepa Arrizabalaga’s net at Wembley Stadium, securing the club’s maiden FA Cup crown.

After a string of impressive performances in recent years, Tielemans is believed to have caught the eye of some of the continent’s biggest clubs, with Liverpool heavily linked a move for the midfield maestro in recent weeks.

Several reports suggested he was set to seek pastures new this summer in order to play Champions League football, but Leicester are under no pressure to sell, and with no club’s making a formal offer, he could commit his future to Brendan Rodgers’ charges.

News that the club’s hierarchy are set to offer Tielemans a new contract imminently will leave Brendan Rodgers feeling delighted.

The Northern Irish tactician has guided the Foxes to consecutive fifth-place finishes in the Premier League standings during his two full seasons in charge, and he’ll be determined to go one better next term.

Securing the services of new signings Patson Daka, Boubakary Soumare and Ryan Bertrand represent some fantastic transfers business by Leicester, but their most important deal could be convincing Tielemans to commit his future to the club.
