England want to make big impression in first two ODIs

England are targetting the first two One-Day Internationals of the National Bank Series with New Zealand as vital

Lynn McConnell11-Feb-2002England are targetting the first two One-Day Internationals of the National Bank Series with New Zealand as vital. The series opens on Wednesday at Jade Stadium in Christchurch, formerly Lancaster Park, and the second game is at the WestpacTrust Stadium in Wellington on Saturday.
Hussain- first two games important

Captain Nasser Hussain said he was aware that New Zealand had not finished well in Australia and while mindful of how New Zealand played earlier in the summer, he is expecting an even series between two sides of similar lineups, all the way down the order.”Both sides will be sparring up against each other and I think the first two games will be very important,” he said.At the same time he acknowledged that England were well down on experience in ODIs as borne out by the fact that New Zealand had players like Chris Harris who has played 198 matches, Stephen Fleming who has 165, Chris Cairns 146 and Nathan Astle 145.Hussain said he was pleased with the way England were gelling as a team. They were showing character but there was a lot more the side had to learn about one-day cricket. It would be a slow progression but some parts of their game still needed a lot of improvement. Consistency of selection and fighting and showing character was how a team was brought together, he said.Asked where he wanted to see improvements he said: “Our fielding, our intensity, our fighting in tight situations, our batting in the first 15, our bowling at the death, areas like that.”There would be times, possibly even in the New Zealand series, where the wheels would come off but the thing was not to over-react.”You learn more from losses and wheels coming off than wins,” he said.”We don’t play enough one-day cricket, it is only now we are getting experience,” he said.
Bond- out through injury

Hussain said he was “disappointed, but not too disappointed” that his side will not have to face up to New Zealand fast bowling sensation Shane Bond this summer.Bond was forced out of the remainder of the New Zealand summer today when diagnosed with a suspected stress fracture in his left ankle. His place in the CLEAR Black Caps for tomorrow’s first One-Day International has been taken by Northern Districts rookie fast bowler Ian Butler.Hussain was informed of Bond’s injury at the start of a press conference soon after the England team arrived in Christchurch this afternoon.”Obviously we have heard a lot about him and saw him in India where we got all that series and he looks a great prospect.”Young fast bowlers bring vibrancy to the game and the New Zealand crowds want to see him on home soil,” Hussain said. The two warm-up games against Northern Districts had been good preparation for the side and Hussain said he had been delighted with the way everything had been laid on in Hamilton. The opposition had been very good.”Coming from India will take us a little bit longer. The bounce on that wicket was more like Perth than Cuttack. We’ve come from England where the wickets do have a little more bounce so we’ve got no excuses there.”We’ve got another full on nets session tomorrow, quite a few of our boys have toured out here before so we are as ready as we need to be.”The WestpacTrust Park wicket had been good and was as fast as anything he had played on.”The last time was in Australia, even in England we don’t get wickets with that pace now, they’re all sort of dying a bit of a death. They’re trying to re-lay a few of them.”But that was a good cricket wicket and you can see that the cricketers New Zealand are producing, the better wickets you play on the better cricketers you get,” he said.Hussain said the laws which allow faster bowlers more opportunities to use a shorter ball each over, required different thinking on a ground-by-ground basis. On some grounds in India it had been vital to make good use of the first 15 overs because the balls went soft, the spinners came on later on and it was difficult to score.Compared to the Australian series where scores of 60/2 were the New Zealand par in the first 15 overs.”There might be times out here when it swings around and you have to keep wickets in hand. There might be times when it is very flat and New Zealand had good bowlers like Harris and we will have to get off to a flyer,” he said.

Otago make meal of first innings effort

Otago made rather a sandwich of their first innings of only 241 when they won the toss and batted first on the opening day of their State Championship match against Auckland at Colin Maiden Park today

Don Cameron25-Feb-2002Otago made rather a sandwich of their first innings of only 241 when they won the toss and batted first on the opening day of their State Championship match against Auckland at Colin Maiden Park today. The sandwich had a substantial and hearty filling built round a marvellous 111 by the 26-year-old captain Craig Cumming, supported by a solid and patient 39 by the No 6 batsman Craig Pryor. These two put on 106 for the fifth wicket. Sadly, the outside parts of the Otago sandwich were soggy bread. The first four wickets were lost for 81 runs. The last six went for 54 runs. There were few demons in the pitch, as Auckland showed in the 19 overs before stumps when they scored 56 without loss from 19 overs. Mark Richardson was 43 not out (eight fours) and promised, or threatened, depending on the point of view, to do some substantial damage to his old Otago team-mates tomorrow.Otago also face the prospect that another southern favourite Matt Horne has been in wonderful form this summer, and only a bruised foot (a temporary injury) prevented him from joining Richardson in the entree this evening.Otago lost Robbie Lawson for one in the fifth over, but once Simon Beare had made a nervous start (his three previous innings were ducks) and Cumming quickly settled in Otago prospered. These two went steadily along to 62 before Beare, 98 minutes over his 22, misjudged the line of Gareth Shaw’s medium-fast line, and shouldered arms while his middle stump was being knocked out. Chris Gaffaney went quickly, also to Shaw and when Andrew Hore gave Chris Drum his second wicket without scoring Otago were 81 for four, and had wasted good batting conditions. With Pryor showing poise and good judgement, Cumming was able lead a counter-attack of quite splendid quality. The Otago skipper’s fifth first-class century was not an affair of sparkling stroke-play from some fancy batting manual. Rather Cumming batted with quite marvellous efficiency, and with the rare ability to make the most of any ball that did not threaten his castle.Pryor gradually joined in the counter-thrust, and while the first 50 of their partnership was a solid foundation, the second 50 produced a flow of firmly-struck boundaries by Cumming, and with Pryor occasionally lending an attacking hand.Cumming sailed past the 100 in 216 minutes, from 157 balls and there seemed the prospect that he and Pryor would completely dominate an Auckland attack without any sharp teeth left.Unfortunately for Otago Pryor lifted a solid drive at Tama Canning’s bowling and at a shortish cover Llorne Howell took a brilliant two-handed catch. All a sudden, the face of the game changed. Cumming seemed to be half-forward when given out lbw to Canning – Otago 194 for six.Martyn Croy played some solid blows, but he, too, fell to a fine catch by Howell, and the door was open for the Auckland bowlers.Suddenly Brooke Walker, the Auckland captain and leg-spinner, began to confuse the Otago tail-enders with the ball which went quickly and straight through. This brought him three lbw victims, from Barry Frost, the umpire, which took the last three Otago wickets at 232, 236 and 241.So Otago, which probably needed a first innings of 300-plus to justify batting first in favourable conditions, fell seriously short of their target, and they must have had the worry beads out tonight as they regarded the mastery that Richardson enjoyed before stumps.

Windass: Joe Willock won’t return to Newcastle United - Exclusive

Arsenal’s Joe Willock will not return to Newcastle United this summer, says former Premier League striker Dean Windass.

Willock spent the second half of the 2020/21 season on loan at St. James’ Park, where he excelled.

He scored eight goals in 14 league appearances and is now wanted back at the club by Steve Bruce.

According to Chronicle Live, Newcastle are looking to offer cash plus goalkeeper Freddie Woodman for Willock, knowing that Arsenal are keen on adding an English shot-stopper to their squad for homegrown quota purposes.

For Windass, though, the 21-year-old midfielder is likely to remain in north London.

“Willock’s obviously going to stay at Arsenal next year,” the ex-Hull City forward said to FFC in an exclusive interview.

“I can’t see Willock going back to Newcastle unless [Mikel] Arteta doesn’t want him, and Steve will jump right at it.”

With Arsenal being Willock’s boyhood club, it is easy to imagine him staying and fighting for his career there.

However, after that goalscoring run he went on, netting seven times in seven consecutive games, the English youngster has shown he has too much talent to be sitting on the bench.

If not guaranteed opportunities, perhaps he should at least consider another loan move should he not want to leave the Gunners for good.

Spurs eye huge £30m Lucas Moura upgrade

Tottenham Hotspur have been told exactly how much it’ll cost to land mooted summer transfer target Mikkel Damsgaard…

What’s the word?

“Did you see that Damsgaard goal? I’ll tell you [his] fair price, today at least 30 million but if he scores again he will reach 40,” claimed Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero to Italian newspaper Il Secolo XIX (via Calciomercato).

Spurs have been linked with the 20-year-old gem regularly over the past few months and, just last week, Club Doria 46 reported that their interest was ‘strong’, although the north Londoners face competition from their Premier League rivals West Ham and Leeds.

Moura upgrade?

If the Denmark international continues to excel at Euro 2020, that asking price could genuinely increase, just as his club’s president says.

Damsgaard has emerged as a potential Danish star of the future in the absence of former Tottenham playmaker Christian Eriksen. His wonderstrike kickstarted a 4-1 rout over Russia to seal their place in the knockout stages of the competition.

The Sampdoria attacker received the ball from current Spurs midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and, on the half-turn, he shifted the ball onto his stronger right foot before curling a phenomenal strike into the top corner.

As per SofaScore, Damsgaard is among the best-performing attackers in the competition right now. He has recorded six successful dribbles, four shots and two key passes, earning a 7.25 average rating on top of his wonder goal.

Considering it was on such a big stage, it was the first real glimpse of the young 5 foot 11 dynamo living up to his hype. It’s no surprise that his former manager Claudio Ranieri, who won the Premier League at Leicester, dubbed him a “child prodigy” with a “big future.”

These performances at Euro 2020 merely build on his impressive domestic form from the 2020/21 campaign, where he registered two goals and four assists, but those numbers do not do his performances justice as the £11.7m-rated Dane proved to be an exciting and versatile talent, displaying immense levels of work rate.

Damsgaard played in no fewer than seven different positions across 37 appearances in all competitions and averaged 1.2 tackles and 1.5 successful dribbles per game in the Italian top flight.

With the future of current Spurs winger Lucas Moura in doubt, the “magical” and “dynamic” gem could well be a perfect long-term upgrade for whoever takes the dugout in north London next season.

Last season, the long-serving Brazilian managed only 1.1 successful dribbles per game, whilst he isn’t as industrious as Damsgaard either, having averaged a lower 1.1 attempted tackles each league outing, as per WhoScored.

Between September and February, the first-choice winger only delivered one goal in the Premier League, which emphasises his inconsistencies in a Spurs shirt.

Fabio Paratici must look to sign Damsgaard now that his asking price has been revealed and, in the process, the north Londoners can move on from the faltering Moura.

AND in other news, Paratici can seal Spurs’ dream Kane replacement in “complete” £36m-rated goal machine…

As one who has worn many hats in Barbados’ and West Indies’ cricket, David Holford appreciates the importance of the junior coaching programmes at some of the island’s clubs

Haydn Gill07-Apr-2002As one who has worn many hats in Barbados’ and West Indies’ cricket, David Holford appreciates the importance of the junior coaching programmes at some of the island’s clubs. At the senior level we have to compete with people who are all coached, said the former Barbados captain, West Indies all-rounder, team manager and chief selector and current Spartan Club president and chairman of the Barbados Cricket Association’s Cricket Development Committee. In Australia, England, South Africa, the kids are coached from an early age and they become more technically proficient than our guys, who tend to be natural players. They, through the well-structured coaching programmes, are able to develop players who don’t have the natural talent that we do, but they end up with the discipline that comes from the coaching programme. It is important for us, if we are going to compete at the highest level, to make sure that we equip our players technically to deal with all the different situations that they may encounter. That’s why clubs like Spartan are providing the opportunities for young children between ages five and 14 to have the benefit of quality coaching from some of the island’s eminent coaches.Alvin Greenidge, Ezra Moseley, Roddy Estwick, Dexter Toppin, all highly rated by many observers, are among those involved in Spartan’s programme. Second vice-president Ron Greenidge, Teddy Foster and Sylvan Stoute also lend a hand and from time to time, there is assistance from Philo Wallace and Livy Puckerin, two of the club’s current players. But it was George Linton and Jeffrey Mascoll who were instrumental in getting things going in 1999.Neither is available today because of other commitments, but they laid the groundwork for the success of the programme which was reorganised in 2000 to include the addition of the professional coaches.Holford also mentioned two characteristics which were also spoken of when we featured Wanderers and Richard Straker’s Northern Cricketers high interest in participation and lack of adequate facilities. After about a year, we started getting a lot of kids, the Spartan president said. From a start-up number of 50, the register rose to about 200 at one point. About 150 are now active, but the average session would have about 80 to 90 boys.Like other programmes, Spartan have had to turn back people and inevitably, there are challenges in managing it.It is fairly difficult. One of the things lacking in Barbados is cricket facilities. We do the best we can with what’s available here in Queen’s Park, Holford said. The club, however, is trying to develop some practice pitches in the north-eastern corner of the ground. We need some more facilities. There really is not enough room, not enough wickets to cater to that number of boys. They keep coming all the time and it’s difficult to refuse them.As Holford spoke, there were four sets in sessions taking place on the field. The one on the main pitch was supervised by Wallace.A lot has been said about players not putting back anything into cricket, said the experienced Spartan and Barbados opening batsman. I am one of those players who is prepared once I have the time to come out and put in a big effort in terms of developing the cricket. There is no better age than to do it at this junior age.Wallace also spoke of the enthusiasm he saw among the kids. It’s nice to see that you are asking players to do something and you can see them trying to do it. That is very pleasing, he said. People are saying that our cricket is dying and the talent is not there, but there is loads of talent at this junior level. All we need to do is harness it some more and try to develop that talent. In the north-eastern corner, there was another group, under the guidance of Estwick. Among them were Jason Simmons and Shane Dowrich, two ten-year-olds from West Terrace Primary.I love cricket, Simmons said when he was asked why he joined the programme. When I came here two years ago I was throwing, but now I can bowl. The confident Dowrich, who claims to be a batsman, bowler and wicket-keeper, has big goals.I want to be like Martin Nurse. I want to play cricket for Barbados at the age of 16, he said.Holford has a suggestion that will help those like Simmons and Dowrich improve even more: a competition among those clubs with these programmes. In the past, Spartan played matches against Wanderers and Windward on an informal basis. What is lacking now is a competition for the youngsters. That is what we need to fit into the whole structure, Holford added. It’s one thing to show guys how to play and it’s another to need a platform where they can go and exhibit what they have learnt and learn more from the game situation.

Rangers could be set for Tavernier blow

Rangers captain James Tavernier has been linked with a move to the Premier League, and it would be a massive blow for Steven Gerrard if the defender were to leave Ibrox this summer.

According to 90min, Manchester United, Arsenal, Brighton and Norwich City are all keen on signing the 29-year-old after his sensational performances for Gerrard’s side last season.

Despite the former Wigan Athletic man signing a new contract back in April, it may be difficult for Rangers to turn down an offer from the likes of Manchester United or Arsenal this summer, whilst the wages on offer in the Premier League may well be enough to turn Tavernier’s head.

The right-back has been in superb form since joining the club in 2015, making 289 appearances in all competitions, in which he has contributed a very impressive 65 goals and 90 assists.

Last season saw the Englishman manage 19 goals and 16 assists from right-back, so it is no surprise that he is attracting serious interest from the Premier League this summer, as it seems clear that the Scottish Premiership is below his level.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-rangers-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Rangers transfer rumours and news!”]

The offer of Champions League football at Ibrox next season might previously have been enough to convince him to stay, but if Manchester United make an approach for him, then Rangers may well be forced to cash in on the £7.2m-rated defender.

It would be a devastating setback to lose such an influential player ahead of the Gers’ title defence and Champions League return next season, as he was their top goalscorer and assists provider last season. His performances before the season split earned him an incredible 7.75 rating from WhoScored, which was comfortably the best of any player in Gerrard’s squad.

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776″]

Therefore, Rangers should do all they can to keep Tavernier – who was described by Gerrard as a “powerhouse” last season – at Ibrox this summer, as it would be a huge blow to their squad if they were to lose him to a Premier League club this summer.

In other news… Rangers dealt huge blow with “phenomenal” star who could’ve replaced Morelos
