When Celtic lost Jeremie Frimpong last winter, it was a big blow to their aspirations.

The Dutchman wasn’t always the most focused of defenders at Parkhead but he was always a rampant threat from an offensive point of view.

His Paradise exit left the Hoops in the lurch. They all of a sudden needed to find a right-back and didn’t discover one until very late in the window.

The player they signed was Jonjoe Kenny as the defender arrived on loan from Everton.

It looked like a solid piece of business on paper. He was in excellent form for Schalke last term, being nominated for the Bundesliga Rookie of the Year award for his performances.

However, he never showed much in Glasgow, failing to set the world alight.

Kenny demonstrated promising signs in the final third but he was particularly abject defensively. He was incredibly poor in the Scottish Cup defeat to Rangers.

In the process of being described as a “horror show” by ACSOM presenter Paul John Dykes, he was at fault for two goals. The full-back didn’t get close enough to Steven Davis for the opening goal and then allowed Ryan Kent to get across him for the second before diverting the ball into his own net.

Kenny was poor in successive Old Firm derbies and it would be a surprise if we saw him back in Glasgow next term.

Celtic are still yet to replace Frimpong and it’s unlikely they’ll find his replacement in Anthony Ralston either. The full-back played just once this season and should now be usurped in the pecking order by Lee O’Connor.

The 20-year-old enjoyed an impressive season on loan at Tranmere in League 2 where his side reached a domestic cup final and also made it to the play-off semi-finals.

O’Connor starred at right-back but also made an impression in the middle of the park, applying a calm and composed head.

Speaking about the youngster earlier this term, Tranmere goalkeeper Joe Murphy commented: “Lee is an excellent, excellent player. He’s not a League Two player, Lee is like a Championship footballer. He’s clever, he’s really cool on the ball, very calm, and he’s like that as a lad too – very laid-back.”

Those qualities appear to be the polar opposite of both Kenny and Frimpong, two individuals who were rather panicked when defending one-on-one situations.

Murphy continued: “Lee is the sort of player who could play anywhere and he’d do a great job. He’s got a really big future and he’s a great lad. Whether it’s at Celtic or somewhere else, hopefully he can push on and get some more games under his belt.”

After providing first-team minutes to Adam Montgomery at the end of the season, Celtic showed they weren’t afraid to hand younger members of the team a go when needed.

Having earned just a second call-up to the Republic of Ireland squad this summer, he should be impressing enough to earn his senior debut for the Hoops next term.

Inesperadamente, um senhor por volta dos 50 anos, pulou o alambrado de Moça Bonita e correu para os braços do uruguaio que se surpreendeu com a atitude e o abraçou.

Loco Abreu estava jogando no futebol de El Salvador, antes de acertar com o Alvirrubro. O atacante é ídolo no Botafogo, por onde conquistou o Campeonato Carioca. O Bangu será o 23º clube na carreira do veterano.

O elenco do Alvirrubro se apresenta no dia 03 janeiro para uma pré-temporada em Vargem Pequena, Zona Oeste do Rio. A estreia do time está prevista para o dia 28 do mesmo mês no Campeonato Carioca, com adversário a ser definido pela fase preliminar.

Nuno Santo was happy the day before he announced he was leaving Wolves. That’s the word of club legend Steve Bull who spoke exclusively to Football FanCast this week.

However, a rift behind the scenes has put the club as we know it in doubt. Nuno has departed the Midlands under a cloud of smoke following an argument over club finances.

It’s thought that Jeff Shi came to him with a plan to strengthen the club this summer but that involved selling their best players and working on finding cheaper replacements.

The Portuguese boss didn’t like it and consequently, he handed in his notice and headed for the departure lounge.

Within days of his exit, Ruben Neves has been linked with a £35m exit while the future of Adama Traore remains in doubt.

If the Spaniard stays at Molineux, he will be a pivotal player for any new manager coming in. One head coach linked with the vacancy is Paulo Fonseca.

Another manager to hail from Portugal, Fonseca is rather unsurprisingly a client of Jorge Mendes.

Though, he’s more than qualified for the job. He took Roma to the Europa League semi-finals this season and won the domestic league with Shakhtar Donestk in Ukraine in three consecutive seasons.

Fonseca has developed an attacking style of play, one that in his own words requires himself and the team to be “brave.”

The 48-year-old prefers an energetic and intense brand of football, one that sees the ball moved forward in double-quick time.

For someone like Traore, this would game-changing. The Spain international is one of the quickest players in the division and managed to record more successful dribbles than anyone else in the top-flight this term.

He is a radiant ball of fun, an unstoppable force who can create panic among even the very best defences in the Premier League.

His numbers, however, haven’t been impressive this term. Traore scored just two goals and thus, improvement is needed.

Fonseca could help the winger to finally discover some consistent end product. The work he did with the group of attackers at Shakhtar was eye-catching.

The coach had the pleasure of managing Brazilian trio Taison, Marlos and Junior Moraes in Donetsk. They all flourished under the guidance of Fonseca as he witnessed them score a combined 88 goals in three years.

Besides Raul Jimenez, this Wolves attack hasn’t registered the most vibrant of numbers in recent years.

The Mexican scored 27 last term but only managed 11 appearances this season due to a fractured skull.

Fabio Silva scored just four goals in all competitions while Pedro Neto top-scored with five strikes. As a consequence, the trio could improve considerably under Fonseca’s watch.

Neto has proven himself to be an impressive performer this season but there is still a lot of potential to be extracted from Traore.

It never really felt like Nuno was able to get the best from him; perhaps Fonseca can change his fortunes.

Além da situação incerta do Maracanã, o Flu optará pelo Giulite Coutinho por uma questão econômica. Adotado como casa tricolor no segundo semestre de 2016, Edson Passos recebeu nove partidas do Tricolor, e os resultados esportivos e financeiros foram positivos.

Apesar de não ter grandes rendas – o estádio suporta pouco mais de 12 mil torcedores -, a chance de prejuízo como mandante é mínima, diferente do Maracanã, que tem um custo elevado de operação. Assim, como os jogos do Estadual não têm atraído grandes públicos nas últimas edições, a cúpula tricolor entende que o Giulite Coutinho é capaz de atender a demanda do Campeonato Carioca. A média tricolor no estádio foi de 6.908 pagantes e renda de R$ 22.858.

A presidência do América já está com a proposta do Fluminense em mãos e avalia as condições para a prorrogação do acordo. O clube não deve impor dificuldades e a parceria com o Tricolor das Laranjeiras deve seguir em 2017. O novo contrato será válido até 31 de maio. Former Leeds United star David Norris expects the club to make a real effort to sign Rodrigo De Paul from Udinese this summer and believes the deal may happen.

De Paul has been linked with the Elland Road club since last summer, when Marcelo Bielsa’s team are said to have made a bid worth €35m (£30m).

Udinese held firm and rejected that offer and the playmaker went on to enjoy a superb season in Serie A.

The Argentina international made 36 appearances in the league, scoring nine goals and laying on 10 assists.

The link has not gone away, though, with many reports claiming Leeds could make another bid for De Paul this summer, with the player surely aware of the interest.

And Norris believes that the interest from Bielsa’s men may finally pay off following a year-long flirtation between the two parties, though he is wary of the club being beaten to the punch.

Indeed, Atletico Madrid and Liverpool have also been linked with an interest, so Leeds may have to move quickly if they are to secure De Paul’s signature.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, Norris said: “Yeah I think so. That one’s not gone away for a year now. I fully expect that he knows Leeds are interested now.

“Leeds have shown an interest for a long time, so normally with that perseverance, I’d absolutely expect Leeds to try to get that one over the line. He fits their style of play, Leeds will have done due diligence on him and from what we’ve seen of him, and the way Leeds play, he would suit their style of play.

“He seems to want the move, Leeds want it, so I expect Leeds to really go after that one and just hope, potentially, they don’t get gazumped.”

Uma possível contratação do centroavante Christian Colmán, do Nacional (PAR), não fará o São Paulo desistir da volta do argentino Jonathan Calleri, do West Ham (ING). – Temos que ver porque não sabemos se temos condições de manter dois jogadores de patamar alto para a mesma posição. Se bem que o Colmán viria com um salario até bem abaixo do nosso teto. Mas vamos ver, até porque a negociação com o Calleri não é fácil. Os investidores querem ele na Europa – afirmou José Jacobson, diretor de futebol do Tricolor.

Nos dois casos, o São Paulo aguarda, mas a situação de Colmán é considerada mais adiantada. A diretoria ofereceu 1,1 milhão de dólares (cerca de R$ 3,54 milhões) por 50% dos direitos econômicos do atleta e agora topa pagar 700 mil dólares (cerca de R$ 2,25 milhões) à vista, contra 500 mil dólares da proposta anterior. O restante seria pago em duas parcelas semestrais de 200 mil dólares (cerca de R$ 644 mil). Os paraguaios procuraram o clube no último sábado abertos a uma nova oferta e agora precisam dar uma resposta.

Com relação a Calleri, o principal obstáculo são os investidores que pagaram cerca de R$ 40 milhões para tirá-lo do Boca Juniors (ARG) no fim do ano passado.
