Umar Gul sparked Pakistan’s fightback on the second morning at Dubai as he removed nightwatchman Paul Harris, AB de Villiers and Ashwell Prince in quick succession in the midst of his spell of 3 for 15 in eight overs. His dismissal of de Villiers, bowled through the gate by one that nipped back in off the pitch, was particularly eye-catching and brought Pakistan right back into the game after South Africa had started the day on a healthy 311 for 3. “I have worked very hard on the incutter,” revealed Gul. “I bowled a couple of outswingers to de Villiers before slipping in the incoming delivery.”Pakistan managed to maintain control in the field despite the loss of Wahab Riaz, who has been ruled out of the remainder of the series with a muscle strain. Harris clung to the crease in a 42-minute duck – setting a new record for South Africa in the process – while Kallis clipped an early boundary off his legs, but the scoring rate then stalled completely as just two more boundaries were struck in the opening session despite Pakistan’s depleted resources.”We had a team meeting during it was felt that we had conceded around 30-40 extra runs yesterday which we shouldn’t have,” explained Gul. “It was decided that we would try to contain them today. There was some pressure, obviously, due to the loss of Wahab Riaz. However, Younis Khan bowled really well and we built pressure by restricting the flow of runs. The thinking was that if we managed to do so, the batsmen would make mistakes [and get out].”Pakistan’s opening batsmen built upon the progress made by the bowlers with a 105-run stand before Mohammad Hafeez chipped Paul Harris to Graeme Smith at mid-on to be out for 60. Gul praised the batsmen’s efforts, and suggested that if Pakistan could secure a first-innings lead then South Africa could be put under real pressure.”Taufeeq and Hafeez gave us a good start, and Younis and Azhar Ali are going along nicely. We’ll try and bat for as long as possible, and if we can get a lead of 100-150 runs, it will be tough for South Africa on this wicket in the third innings.”The pitch is still good for batting, there are hardly any rough areas on it. Maybe there will be some uneven bounce from the third day.”

Atacadão do Andrés! Timão contrata jovens, e Carille aprova planejamento

Rain ruins New Zealand's warm-up match

New Zealand’s first warm-up match on their tour of Bangladesh has been cancelled because of unplayable ground conditions at the Bangladesh Krira Shikka Protisthan Stadium (BKSP) near Dhaka

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Oct-2010New Zealand’s first warm-up match on their tour of Bangladesh has been cancelled because of unplayable ground conditions at the Bangladesh Krira Shikka Protisthan Stadium (BKSP) near Dhaka.”The region has been hit with 15 days of heavy rain and the outfield is completely sodden,” New Zealand’s manager, Michael Sharpe, said. “Groundsmen had the super sopper out but could only go a few metres before it needed emptying. The officials had no choice but to call off the match with the match on Sunday, October 3, also in doubt.”The BKSP stadium is two hours from the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur, where the five one-day Internationals will be played. Martin hat-trick helps Leeward edge into final

Chesney Hughes struck a steady 81 to guide his side to 213, a total that his team, led by Anthony Martin’s hat-trick, defended by four runs in a thrilling semi-final clash against Windward Islands

Leeward Islands’ opener Chesney Hughes struck a steady 81 to guide his side to 213, a total that his team, led by legspinner Anthony Martin’s hat-trick, defended by four runs in a thrilling semi-final clash against Windward Islands at Sabina Park. Windward had their moments, with their captain Darren Sammy, who was recently handed leadership of the West Indies side, snaring four wickets to lead a clinical bowling performance. Lyndon James then struck 64 to anchor their stop-start chase, but it was not enough to take Windward into the final.Leeward began well after winning the toss, with Montcin Hodge raising 44 off 57 balls with Hughes for the first wicket before Sammy made his first breach. Hodge’s dismissal sparked a mini-collapse as Leeward lost their next three batsmen for a combined contribution of seven runs. Offspinner Liam Sebastien trapped Javier Liburd in front before Sammy had Gavin Williams lbw first ball. When Omari Banks nicked Sammy behind, also for a duck, Leeward were stuttering at 80 for 4.Hughes, who had batted through the crisis, settled down to repair the innings along with his captain Wilden Cornwall. The pair adopted a cautious approach in their 76-run stand that spanned 103 balls. Hughes struck seven fours in his innings that came off 105 balls before being dismissed by offspinner Shane Shillingford in the middle of a miserly spell. Cornwall departed soon after, having contributed 38 off 57 balls, but the tail ensured Leeward crossed 200. Justin Athanaze stood out with 22 off 21 balls as Windward wrapped the innings in 49 overs.Their batsmen had given Leeward a chance, and by the end of the first over of the chase, Lionel Baker had put them firmly on top. Opener Devon Smith and No. 3 Andre Fletcher fell for ducks to leave Windward reeling at 1 for 2. Keddy Lesporis and Johnson Charles arrested the slide, adding 59 for the third wicket in 17.1 overs. Athanaze removed Lesporis for 22, and one run later Charles was run-out, giving Leeward the upper hand once again. Sammy attempted to inject some urgency, but after hitting a four and a six, he succumbed to Jacques Taylor as Windward slumped to 85 for 5 in the 25th over.Martin had settled into a stifling spell by now, and controlled the middle overs as Lyndon James tried to revive the innings along with the lower order. Sebastien contributed 24 off 47 balls and helped James add 80 in 18.2 overs, but Sebastien’s fall in the 44th over evened the game once again. James was bowled by Martin with 40 required off 33 balls, and Leewards were on the threshold of the final when Shillingford and Mervin Matthew fell off the next two deliveries. Windward’s last pair was not going to go down without a fight though.Gary Mathurin struck 19 off 18 balls, while No. 11 Nelon Pascal hit 18 off 16 in a heart-stopping 35-run stand. The pair, however, ran out of overs as Leeward edged home. In the final, they will meet the winner of the second semi-final to be played today, between Barbados and Jamaica.

Man United suffer blow in ten Hag chase

Manchester United are attempting to hire their next manager to take control at Old Trafford this summer with Erik ten Hag the clear favourite for the challenging role, however a new update has emerged in another set-back for the club.

What’s the word?

According to Mail on Sunday’s Chief Writer, Rob Draper, Manchester United have now got some competition to secure the appointment of the Ajax boss.

In a report for the Daily Mail, Draper wrote that a leading Bundesliga club are also interested in hiring ten Hag this summer, and there are many issues that need to be resolved before he considers a move to Manchester at the end of the season.

Supporters will be fuming

Ten Hag has been the clear front runner and favourite to take over from Ralf Rangnick for weeks now, and losing the manager to another club this late in the process would be a devastating blow that would surely leave Man United supporters fuming and disappointed.

The Ajax boss was originally linked with the job leading up to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer being sacked, but the manager committed himself to see out the season with his Dutch side, so after a long wait for the appointment it will be a widely unpopular outcome if the United board and the Glazers don’t seal the deal.

The Red Devils have had an abysmal season by their standards considering they finished second in the Premier League last season. They have crashed out of all competitions and will enter their longest trophy drought in 40 years, so the addition of a manager like ten Hag with a winning mentality is essential for bringing back trophies to the club.

He has won two Eredivisie titles and impressively took Ajax to a Champions League semi-final in 2019 to name just a few of ten Hag’s achievements at his current club, and the supporters of Man United will surely be desperate for him to emulate his success with their side too.

The powers at Old Trafford must do everything they can to keep the deal on the table with the 52-year-old manager as it would be a disaster to lose him to another club and go back to square one in their manager search.

Mohammad Amir to be struck from ICC Awards list

Mohammad Amir will be removed from the list of nominees for the International Cricket Council’s emerging player of the year award

Mohammad Amir, the 18-year-old fast bowler who is one of three Pakistan players currently under investigation for spot-fixing, will be removed from the list of nominees for the ICC’s emerging player of the year award, ESPNcricinfo has learnt. Mohammad Asif has also been cut from the Test cricketer of the year category. The ICC statement issued late Thursday evening, which provisionally suspended the three players, also stated that “in accordance with the provisions of the code, this means they are immediately barred from participating in all cricket and related activities until the case has been concluded”. An ICC official said Amir’s removal from the list could be confirmed by “reading between the lines”. Amir was one of 16 players nominated, and a favourite to win the emerging player category. The decision, however, was criticised by Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdon, Wajid Shamsul Hasan, who asked what had happened to the general principle of law – innocent until proven guilty? “After the shocking, arbitrary and high-handed suspension of the three Pakistani cricketers through the ICC’s uncalled for action, nothing is coming to me as a surprise,” Hasan said. “Rather, my apprehensions that there is a rat in the whole affair are being strengthened. It is emerging as a fishy situation where pieces have now started falling in place to convince me that there is more than meet the eye.”The nominations for the 2010 awards recognise cricketing achievement for the period between August 24, 2009 and August 10, 2010. During that span, Amir took 33 wickets at an average of 31.45 in nine Tests and 16 wickets in 10 ODIs. He became the youngest player to reach 50 Test wickets during the Lord’s Test, which is at the heart of the Scotland Yard and ICC’s ongoing investigations. The Test took place just after the nomination period ended.
