Can Royals breach Mumbai's fortress?

A preview of the IPL match between Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur

The Preview by Siddhartha Talya14-May-2013Match factsWednesday, May 15, 2013
Start time 2000 (1530 GMT)Dwayne Smith has had a consistent run of scores, but hasn’t dominated at the top•BCCI

Big pictureMumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals have been unbeaten at home this season, and their clash on Wednesday could be a prelude to what may follow in the play-offs. In their respective previous games, it seemed at one stage that their home advantage was about to be undermined, but Shane Watson and Kieron Pollard completely altered the course of the chases with destructive half-centuries that left their opponents scarred. Mumbai have been unshakeable at the Wankhede, Royals have had some trouble on the road. The No.1 spot in the table with a game in hand could be at stake in Wednesday’s clash, and it also likely that these two teams will not have seen the last of each other this IPL season.Sachin Tendulkar suffered cramps on his left hand and was struggling to grip the bat during the chase against Sunrisers Hyderabad. He retired hurt on 38, and it remains to be seen if he’s recovered well to take on Royals.Form guideMumbai Indians: WWWWL

In the spotlightDwayne Smith has been consistent with his starts, but has had matches this season where he’s struggled in the opening overs, slowing the innings down. It has helped that Dinesh Karthik and Rohit Sharma have scored quickly later in the order, but Smith has played and missed often, got bogged down and hasn’t really dominated the start of an innings. His last five innings read 38 off 40, 22 off 24, 47 off 53, 0 off 1, and 21 off 17.It’ll be interesting to see what changes Rahul Dravid makes to Royals’ batting order. Sending James Faulkner and Sanju Samson at No.3 and 4 respectively in a big chase against Chennai Super Kings did raise some eyebrows, before Watson and Stuart Binny helped their side cruise home. It could depend on what happens at the toss, but if there’s been a team this season that has tweaked around its line-up and XIs, it’s the Royals.Stats and Trivia Shane Watson has done pretty well against Lasith Malinga in T20 cricket, taking him for 71 runs off 46 balls while being dismissed by him once. Rahul Dravid, in comparison, has been quite subdued, scoring 24 off 32. Simon Taufel is the most experienced on-field T20 umpire, having stood in 104 matches. However, he is tied with Marais Erasmus for the most number of matches as both on-field and TV umpire – 126. Erasmus has stood as on-field umpire in 96 matches, and as TV umpire in 30 games. Taufel’s numbers are 104 and 22. Quotes”Stuart Binny is a really improved cricketer now. The way he has handled the pressure shows he has really matured and it is time that the national selectors also take note of his performance. In T20 format he is a superb finisher and contributes with the ball too. I am really happy for him.”

Dhaka Gladiators vie for second title

Dhaka Gladiators will play with a Chris Gayle-sized hole in their line-up for the final when they take on Chittagong Kings in Mirpur

The Preview by Mohammad Isam18-Feb-2013 Match FactsFebruary 19, 2013
Start time 1800 (1200 GMT)The lack of runs from Ravi Bopara is a problem that needs to be solved by Chittagong Kings on the big day•Chittagong Kings

Big PictureDhaka Gladiators will play with a Chris Gayle-sized hole in their line-up for the final. But credit to the make-up of their team. They take on Chittagong Kings, against whom they first lost a match before winning one. It is shaping up to be a close contest as the Kings have picked up momentum at the right time, but the Gladiators are a side heavy on Twenty20 specialists. The Gladiators have had a solid campaign so far, much of it due to their squad that was the best on paper before the tournament started and remains so, through the 13 matches. Mohammad Ashraful, Shakib Al Hasan, Anamul Haque and Darren Stevens have led with the bat while Alfonso Thomas’ Twenty20 experience has been vital with the ball, picking up 17 wickets. Shakib and fellow left-arm spinner Mosharraf Hossain have taken the bulk of the wickets together and their combined eight overs will again be important.Kings’ strength is in their bowling, especially left-arm spin. Enamul Haque jnr has taken 18 wickets and his four overs will most likely be played out quietly by the rampant Gladiators. The batting will be propped up by Ryan ten Doeschate who has played several vital knocks, but the lack of runs from Ravi Bopara is a problem that needs to be solved on the big day. Chittagong Kings WWLWL In the spotlight After Gayle’s departure, Shakib Al Hasan will again be the most important player in the Gladiators’ line-up. Shakib has had a quiet tournament so far, though there have been the odd contributions. He will bat at No. 3 and the four overs of left-arm spin will hold the key for the defending champions in the final.Enamul Haque jnr has been the vital performer for Chittagong Kings even on bad days. Apart from the wickets, he offers control in a bowling attack that is slowly shaping up at the right time of the tournament. Team newsSince Luke Wright is in New Zealand and Chris Gayle returned after one match, Ashraful is likely to open and Josh Cobb could make it to the playing eleven of the Gladiators.Dhaka Gladiators (probable): 1 Tillekaratne Dilshan, 2 Mohammad Ashraful, 3 Shakib Al Hasan, 4 Anamul Haque (wk), 5 Darren Stevens, 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Josh Cobb, 8 Mashrafe Bin Mortaza (capt), 9 Alfonso Thomas, 10 Mosharraf Hossain, 11 Saqlain SajibThe same line-up is likely for the Kings as they have won two games on the trot with this eleven.Chittagong Kings (probable): 1 Naeem Islam, 2 Jason Roy, 3 Ravi Bopara, 4 Nurul Hasan (wk), 5 Ryan ten Doeschate, 6 Mahmudullah, 7 Kevon Cooper, 8 Jacob Oram, 9 Ariful Haque, 10 Taskin Ahmed, 11 Enamul Haque jnr Stats and triviaThe war of the wicket-takers will be a sideshow in the final. Outgoing captain Jayawardene confident of series win

Mahela Jayawardene has lauded the efforts of his seam bowlers in the ongoing ODI series, and is confident Sri Lanka can achieve a successive bilateral series win in Australia, having also won there in 2010

Andrew Fernando22-Jan-2013Mahela Jayawardene has lauded the efforts of his seam bowlers in the ongoing ODI series, and is confident Sri Lanka can achieve a successive bilateral series win in Australia, having also won there in 2010. Sri Lanka have earned an unassailable position in the series, leading 2-1, with the final match to be played in Hobart on Wednesday. The visitors looked likely to wrap up the series in game four in Sydney, but an hour’s drizzle rendered playing conditions unfair, by the officials’ reckoning, and that was deemed just cause for abandonment. Sri Lanka have gained the ascendancy in each of the last three ODIs through their bowlers, who have restricted Australia to 170, 74 and 222 for 9, primarily through skilful swing bowling.Jayawardene praised his fast bowlers’ exploitation of the two new balls in ODIs, as he cut a relaxed and assured figure ahead of his final match as captain of Sri Lanka. “Given the way we have played and how we’ve controlled things, the boys will be pretty happy and I’m pretty confident that we’ll be able to close this series in Hobart,” Jayawardene said. “The quality of the bowling has been pretty good. A lot of the batsmen in world cricket will struggle with the way our guys have delivered. With the two new balls, that’s always going to happen going forward. That’s something we’ve spoken about as well – how we’re going to navigate the new rules. All over the world, you’re trying to get wickets up front and it’s vital that you bat well in the top four.”Nuwan Kulasekara has been the best of Sri Lanka’s bowlers, having reaped 10 wickets at an average of 12.90 and an economy-rate of 3.30. His astonishing spell of inswing bowling consigned Australia to their third-worst ODI total ever in Brisbane, and he was again the best of Sri Lanka’s bowlers in Sydney, taking 3 wickets for 30 from his 10 overs. But although he has been the series’ most penetrative bowler, Kulasekara had gone wicketless in the Hobart Test match at the beginning of the tour. Jayawardene said Kulasekara’s return to his favoured format likely sparked a resurgence in form.”He had the control in the Test match, but not the success,” Jayawardene said. “He had a two-week layoff with injury, but he’s come back into the one-dayers very strongly with the white ball. He’s got a lot of confidence with what he’s doing with it. Both he and Lasith [Malinga] have a very good partnership for us, and I’m looking forward to how he’s going to go about it in Hobart as well.”Sri Lanka view this series as a chance to build familiarity with Australian conditions in preparation for the 2015 World Cup, and Jayawardene was pleased with the results his side had been able to put together in their last three limited-overs series in the country. Sri Lanka followed up their 2010 series win with a finals appearance in the 2012 tri-series, and have beaten Australia 8-5 at home in that time.Encouragingly for the visitors, it has largely been the younger players, who will likely feature in the 2015 World Cup, who have been the primary architects of their success. Dinesh Chandimal scored heavily in last year’s tri-series, and also notched a 73 in his only innings in the ongoing one, while Lahiru Thirimanne made a maiden hundred at No. 3, to close out the second match in Adelaide. Angelo Mathews has also played some memorable innings in Australia, in addition to impressing with the ball, and even Kushal Perera has been assured with the bat and behind the stumps in his appearances so far.”The last three or four tours that we’ve come here with the one-day squad, we’ve been pretty consistent,” Jayawardene said. “We’ve played a lot of good cricket. That’s something very positive for the team. The youngsters like Chandi, Thiri and Angelo have learnt a lot playing here. That’s a great investment for the future.”Jayaywardene was also pleased at his side’s mettle to come back from a poor Test series and a heavy defeat in the first ODI, to now be in a position where they cannot lose the series.”I think the turnaround has been fantastic. The Test series was disappointing and we never played to our potential. In the one-dayers, we had new guys coming to a settled set-up, but the Melbourne game was disappointing. But the guys have shown determination and character over the last few one-dayers. Hopefully we can finish it on a very positive note.”

ARRASCAETA NO FLAMENGO?

Michael Clarke, David Warner and Matthew Wade, the three key players rested for the first two ODIs against Sri Lanka, will return for the next two games in Brisbane and Sydney. The allrounder Moises Henriques, who last played for Australia in India in 2009, has also been included, while the selectors dropped Aaron Finch, Usman Khawaja, Steven Smith, Ben Cutting and Kane Richardson. Brad Haddin, who picked up a hamstring injury during the second ODI, was also left out.The widespread changes were not surprising after the selectors named a squad devoid of stars for the opening two games, preferring to have Clarke, Warner and Wade rest following their Test duties, and with one eye on the upcoming Test tour of India. However, their return means Khawaja’s one-day opportunity was limited to one innings ended by a run-out at the MCG, while a number of other players have had to make way having had limited time in the middle.John Inverarity, the national selector, said it was always the intention of his panel to play Khawaja in the first game in Melbourne and Smith in the second match in Adelaide, and that both men had benefited from further time around the national squad. He said he had spoken to both Smith and Khawaja on Sunday night about their omissions and said the players had been pleased to have been given an opportunity in the first place.”They saw that with those players coming back there was a good chance they were going to be squeezed out,” Inverarity said. “They would prefer one game to no games. They received a very clear message. It’s not only playing the game, but being in the Australian squad for four or five days and the intensity of training and being there with Mickey Arthur and the other support staff, it’s a very good experience for them.”The one surprise in the squad for the third match in Brisbane on Friday and the fourth game in Sydney on Sunday was the inclusion of Henriques, who started the domestic summer in outstanding form. However, the decision does fit in with Inverarity’s preference for players with all-round skills, and with the view that a seam-bowling allrounder would be required, especially at the Gabba.”We certainly need allrounders,” Inverarity said. “We’re really trying to groom Glenn Maxwell as a spin-bowling allrounder and obvious interest there for India. Mitchell Marsh was in the frame some time ago but he’s injured. Moises Henriques has been on the horizon for some years now, and this is his opportunity. We really hope that he will come on as a seam-bowling allrounder.”I saw him bat at the WACA when he made 78 in the Ryobi Cup and then 78 in the Shield match and he batted superbly. Then he went to Sydney and made 150 and 50 not out in the next game. Also when I saw him bowl in Perth he bowled very well, too. So he’s got a lot of talent. We hope that he performs and we want consistent performance from him.”Maxwell retained his place in the squad despite having done little with the bat or ball during the first two games, although his fielding had been excellent. Inverarity said the selectors rated Maxwell extremely highly and that he was viewed as a batsman who could provide some useful overs, not a frontline spinner, although his bowling had improved since he played for Australia A against the South Africans in early November.”When he gets an opportunity he’s showing signs of improving,” Inverarity said. “He’s not a frontline spinner, he’s a batsman who bowls. As I’ve said many times we are looking for batsmen who can bowl decently. With Dilshan in the Sri Lankan side he’s an opening batsman and bowls very decent offspinners. You need your four bowlers and you need some of your batsmen who can give you some decent overs. That’s where we’re trying to develop Glenn Maxwell.”The inclusion of allrounders is all the more important with the continued absence of Shane Watson. When he returns from his calf injury, Watson will be playing as a specialist batsman only and Inverarity said the selectors were hoping he would have a chance to play Sheffield Shield cricket towards the end of this month, but his availability for any of the limited-overs games this summer remained uncertain.”We’ll just wait and see when Shane is fit to play and then he will come under consideration,” Inverarity said. “But we’re certainly hoping he’ll be fit by the end of this month. In the last three or four days I haven’t heard how he’s progressing. We’ll have to see that. We’re really hoping that he’ll be ready for the Sheffield Shield match which I think starts on the 24th of January, and then we’ll go from there. It will be terrific if he’s available, but I don’t know yet if he’ll be likely or not.”There is also uncertainty over how long Haddin will have to sit out after suffering a hamstring injury during the loss to Sri Lanka in Adelaide on Sunday. Haddin top scored for Australia with 50 but during Sri Lanka’s chase, handed the wicketkeeping gloves to Phillip Hughes and left the field. Australia might take two wicketkeepers on the Test tour of India next month and the selectors are hopeful Haddin will be back in action soon.”We don’t know exactly. I saw Brad last night and again at the airport this morning. We’re hoping it’s not too serious,” Inverarity said. “We’re hoping it’s a couple of weeks and nothing more than that. There is a real chance we’ll take two wicketkeepers to India and/or to England. As I’ve said before the two we consider the best wicketkeeper-batsmen in the country are he and Matthew Wade.”Cricket Australia also announced that the fielding coach Steve Rixon would stand in as head coach over the next few days and during the ODI in Brisbane on Friday to allow Mickey Arthur a break during the team’s busy summer. Arthur will spend a few days with his family in Perth before returning to coaching duties for the fourth ODI in Sydney on Sunday.Australia squad David Warner, Phillip Hughes, Michael Clarke (capt), George Bailey, David Hussey, Matthew Wade (wk), Glenn Maxwell, Moises Henriques, Mitchell Johnson, Mitchell Starc, Clint McKay, Xavier Doherty.
